STUDENTS AND STAFF UPGRADE FOR LIVE STREAMING

With Passaic Valley High School moving to a virtual model, students and staff are becoming more creative with their workspaces. Both teachers and students have invested time and resources to convert and build their home offices.

English teacher Jamie Picarelli adjusted her classroom to accommodate the virtual teaching while Passaic Valley was in the hybrid model. She connected two computer monitors with her projector so she can see her virtual students as well as her students in class at the same time. Her goal is to make sure all her students will get her time equally and efficiently. “I worry [virtual learning] is becoming very cut and paste,” Picarelli explained, who mitigated her worries by slightly changing her teaching style. “I think one thing that virtual teaching has taught me is to be very flexible with my teaching.”

In addition to upgrading his setup in school to accommodate the demands of the hybrid model, science teacher Randall Sanders converted his living room. “I made an office in the middle of my living room that I have to set up every morning,” said Mr. Sanders. “I also use the TV in my living room as a second monitor for my computer. This allows me to teach on one screen and see my students on the other.”

Sanders wishes students would ask for help more often as he realizes online learning might be a difficult change for some students. As part of the Tech Team, Sanders is very grateful he was able to help other teachers and learn more himself about the virtual learning modality.

One component both teachers miss about traditional teaching is their ability to connect with their students. They miss the discussions they would have with their classes and the pure human connection. For teachers, it’s hard to develop relationships with students through a camera.

As teachers convert their offices for virtual teaching, students likewise prepare their workspaces for virtual learning.

Senior Abigail Shaw has set up a space where she is able to learn distraction free. “I really make sure my working space is free of distractions so I can really focus on my work,” said Shaw.

“I find it really hard not getting distracted when learning from home.”

She finds virtual learning challenging as it is completely new to her. “It is a big transition from what I’m used to,” said Shaw.

Although this is something she has never done, she is making the best of it and staying optimistic.

Senior Mia Basile also created her own home office. She bought a new desk that she sits at for virtual learning, which she said works best for her. “I find that being home I tend to waste valuable time not doing my work because I get distracted,” said Basile. “Sitting at my desk and being in a controlled space really helps me with that.”

By Kristen Blumberg, Director of the Little Falls Public Library Libraries are at the heart of any community, acting as a place for everyone to come together and enjoy programs or read the latest book by your favorite author. But what can a library do to engage with the community when a pandemic hits or a state goes into lockdown? Easy, they go digital, as we have.

Libraries have long been more than just repositories of books to borrow. For years now, we have offered DVDs as well as WiFi hotspots. However, most if not all of our programming has required patrons to come into the library, and with a pandemic raging people understandably have some trepidation of coming into the building. Whether it’s our story time program with our youth librarian, or our book clubs with members of the community, we’ve had to adapt them to the current situation.

Patrons don’t even have to worry about having to come into the library to check out books anymore because of platforms like Hoopla, Overdrive, and RB Digital. They can sit in the safety of their own homes and borrow a book for as long as they could with a physical copy then renew it just like they normally could.

When this pandemic ends, our libraries will continue to offer options like these, because we know that our community is counting on us to be there for them. And even when things go back to normal and we can hold programs indoors, we will also make sure to make great use of these 21st century technologies to keep connected with our community.

We’ve done this with the help of platforms such as Zoom, Facebook, and YouTube. For example, we’ve done virtual escape rooms several times since the pandemic started via Zoom by giving the participants clues in a document in the place of physical objects. We’ve even had one of our librarians

VETERANS DAY CEREMONY

The Woodland Park American Legion Post 238 and its Women’s Auxiliary hosted the annual Veterans Day service on Nov. 11 at the war memorial on McBride Avenue. The community is grateful for the service and that Post 238 and its Auxiliary keeps this tradition alive in Woodland Park.

BANNERS HONOR MILITARY SERVICE Military tribute banners have begun to be installed in Woodland Park, along McBride Avenue near Brophy Lane. Any family who has had a service member from town—active military, veteran, or KIA/MIA/POW—may sponsor a banner honoring that individual.

As a way of saying thanks to the men and women who have served in our military, it is the town’s hope that by next Memorial Day, all of McBride Avenue is lined with these tributes. The color banners are 30 inches by 83 inches and are will be given to the families after the display period, which ends on Veterans Day 2021.

POPPIES FOR VETERANS

At Charles Olbon Elementary School in Woodland Park, kindergarten students created a “poppy flower” to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day. The youngsters were part of classes taught by Jeanine Chiaravalloti, Anna Maria Tundo and JoAnn Woessner.

The students wrote cards to thank the veterans for protecting and serving our country. The cards were sent to a New Jersey veterans’ home.

A FOOTBALL SEASON LIKE NO OTHER

With postponements, cancellations and a slew of last-minute schedule adjustments, the 2020 high school football season was like no other. But while games were limited and normal state playoffs did not take place, all local squads managed to get on the field and enjoy moments of success.

setback which resulted in them sharing the division title with the Highlanders. One last COVID shuffle forced the Patriots to set up a week 8 game with Watchung Hills, and this time Wayne Hills came out on the short end of an upset loss to finish the season at 5-2.

PASSAIC VALLEY

The local team that played the most “normal” season was Passaic Valley. Under new head coach Max Wassel, the Hornets only experienced one schedule change, and completed its entire =eight-game slate on time. And it was a promising start to Wassel’s tenure as coach, as Passaic Valley played competitive games all season and emerged with a 5-3 record.

Wayne Valley knew it would be tough to duplicate its amazing championship season of 2019, especially with an extremely difficult chedule. The Indians proved to be tough competitors in the first five games, scoring impressive wins over Old Tappan, Northern Highlands and Hackensack, while fighting hard in two defeats.

Passaic Valley opened the season with three straight wins over Vernon, Lakeland and West Milford, all by a single touchdown. High-flying Sparta handed the Hornets their first loss, and a tough, defensive defeat to Jefferson followed.

The Hornets were slated to face rival Wayne Valley next, but the Indians had to cancel, leaving PV to scramble to find a new opponent. A strong West Essex squad filled the void and proved too much to handle.

At 3-2 heading into week 6, the Indians’ season was disrupted by the local COVID outbreak. After uncertainty about when it would be able to play again, Wayne Valley dropped a hastily scheduled week 7 game against West Morris. Unfortunately, the virus reared its ugly head again just before the Indians’ week 8 game, forcing cancellation of the final two games of the season and meaning the team would finish with a 3-3 record.

Coming into the modified postseason on a threegame skid, Passaic Valley rallied from behind to score a 21-14 win over Mendham. That gave them another home game on November 21 to conclude the season against Demarest. In a wide-open offensive battle, the Hornets prevailed 41-33 to finish with a winning record. And with its JV team recording an unbeaten season, the future looks bright for Passaic Valley.

WAYNE HILLS All four Wayne-based schools experienced a hiatus during the season after COVID-19 cases among the student body. Wayne Hills had the wildest ride, with two games cancelled and four others changed.

The season began with three close wins for the Patriots, including an exciting 20-15 triumph over crosstown rival Wayne Valley. In week 4, Northern Highlands could not play due to COVID, so the Patriots quickly lined up a game with undefeated Old Bridge and recorded an impressive victory.

The next week, Hackensack was unable to play, so the Patriots went further afield for their next opponent, matching up with South Jersey’s Kingsway and winning to get to 5-0.

A COVID outbreak in Wayne shut down the local schools in week 6, cancelling one game, but Wayne Hills was able to come back to play the next week. In a rescheduled game against Northern Highlands, the Patriots suffered a tough

DEPAUL AND PASSAIC TECH DePaul almost played two separate seasons due to COVID-related shutdowns. The Spartans split their first four games, playing their usual brutal schedule. The school went all-virtual in late October after an outbreak and had to cancel its next two games. The Spartans’ week 7 opponent had to pull out, so the Spartans could not play, and then their week 8 opponent also had a virus outbreak.

Facing a potential fourth straight week with no game, DePaul instead accepted a late invitation to travel two-and-a-half hours to take on Ocean City.

In the shadow of Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, the Spartans rolled to a 49-22 victory. The Spartans then had one last schedule change and took on St. Joe’s the day before Thanksgiving. In John McKenna’s last game as coach of DePaul before shifting to his new responsibilities as athletic director, the Spartans lost a tough one to end up 3-3.

For Passaic Tech, the COVID crisis hit before the regular season could even begin, with the first two games wiped out. The Bulldogs played six games in total, and uncharacteristically finished below .500 with a 2-4 record.

It may not have been a perfect season, in terms of record or otherwise, for any of the local teams.

But for all the players, especially the seniors, just getting a chance to play was a victory in itself.

WOODLAND PARK LIBRARY PARTNERS WITH SENATOR CORRADO TO SUPPLY FOOD PANTRY

The Alfred Baumann Public Library partnered with Senator Kristin Corrado to collect non-perishable food during the month of October. Items generously donated by residents

and library patrons were given to the St. Agnes Food Pantry in Little Falls. Local volunteer Bob Dombrowski and his team picked up the food collection in early November, just in time to prepare for Thanksgiving needs.

The St. Agnes Food Pantry opened in July of 2012 in response to people not being able to feed themselves and their pets. The Food Pantry is open twice a month to distribute food to people and their pets who need supplement food.

Food items can be dropped off 24/7 to donation bins located under the portico near the church office doors at 65 Union Avenue in Little Falls. Monetary donations are also accepted.

The Food Pantry is a community effort to help feed the hungry. Volunteers are welcome. More information is available on their website at http://stagneslf.org/food-pantry.

DRUGS TAKEN BACK FOR SAFE DISPOSAL A total of 140 pounds of medications were picked up from the Woodland Park Police Department at the recent National Prescription Drug Take Back Day by federal agents for destruction. The medications had been disposed of in the drug drop box in the lobby of the Police Department at 5 Brophy Lane over the past year.

Residents may use the drop box 24/7/365 to dispose of any unwanted medications. Medicines should be disposed of in their original container.

Liquids should remain sealed in the original container. If the original container is submitted, remove the prescription label if it contains any personal identifying information.

This program is anonymous. No questions will be asked nor requests for identification made. Syringes and sharps will not be accepted.​ Eliminating unwanted medications is critical because it keeps them out of the wrong hands and prevents abuse. Experts also discourage flushing medicines down the toilet because they can contaminate water supplies. Many medications collected from Drug Take Back Day are taken to Waste-to-Energy facilities, where they are completely and safely destroyed at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Turkey Trot, originally intended to include a regular run/walk on November 22 as well as a virtual option, had to be changed to all-virtual when New Jersey imposed stricter limits on gatherings earlier in November.

Monteyne said there were over fifty community sponsors that supported the success of this healthy event. The virtual experience created a “new movement” for added participation for locals as well as other towns as part of the Totowa Turkey Trot experience.

NEWS FROM THE

TOTOWA SCHOOLS THIRD GRADERS DISGUISE A TURKEY On November 24 and 25, third graders at Totowa’s Washington Park School used their artistic talents to “disguise a turkey”. Students turned their turkeys into a variety of creative ideas which included ice cream cones, nurses, superheroes, a girl scout, and many more. Their goal was to disguise the turkey from being eaten for Thanksgiving.

All third graders participated in the activity which included a writing lesson. In addition to the art activity, students wrote a paragraph explaining why their turkey picked their disguise.

The activity was led by the Washington Park School Eighth Grade Mentors.

Mentors were selected at the beginning of the school year based on academic achievements, student leadership, and character. Throughout the program, eighth graders help third graders acclimate to their new school. The mentors lead activities which teach lessons about character building, social and emotional wellness, citizenship, and leadership skills. The lessons are taught through a variety of activities involving all subjects.

Culture Some Holidays and Traditions are: Trinidad And Tobago Carnival is the biggest street carnival, Carnival Thursday is known as the biggest street carnival, Diwali is a carnival with lights, and Boxing day is the 2nd day before Christmas.

As the impact of COVID-19 limits our capacity to gather, it does not limit our ability to adapt and be creative.

Grade 4 at Washington Park School traditionally celebrates diversity every by gathering to share food music and customs of our diverse population. This year was no different. Students learned about the United Nations and combined the commemorations with an activity reflecting the official creation of the United Nations on 24 October 1945.

In class, students participated in a Cultures Around the World project titled “1 Nation.” Students chose a country that they wanted to learn more about, then used computers to find information and completed and designed a country fact sheet.

Next, the students created a presentation using Sway or Power Point highlighting what they learned about the country they researched. To complete the project, the children presented their research or personal experiences to the class.

TOTOWA’S VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS NEED OUR HELP By “Uncle Floyd” Vivino

When they are called to duty, they come no matter where they may be, regardless of the time of day or night, twenty-four hours a days, seven days a week, including all holidays and important family functions, and even during the worst of nature’s often unfavorable weather conditions.

When they respond to an emergency, they do not ask if you have made a recent donation to their fire house. They ask not if you have made any contribution in the past now how much money you would be willing to donate in the future.

They simply answer their call and serve our town, our people, in a most serious time of need.

The eighty members of this most honorable calling are all volunteers. Now, due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, their abilities to raise money through fundraisers, dinners and social gatherings have saddled them with serious financial burdens.

I spoke with Fire Marshal Chief Schoppert about the difficulties in raising needed monies to sustain the fire houses. He seemed very concerned with the facts that many people are not working, that they are having a tough time… and then he stressed that our Volunteer Fire Department has always been grateful for the generosity of Totowa’s residents for their continued support.

Well, all I can say is: “Our volunteer fire department has always been here to help us. Now it is our turn, our duty, our call—to help them.”

WORK BEGINS ON TOTOWA TURF FIELD MISSION

A new artificial turf athletic field is coming to Totowa. Mayor John Coiro, the town council and the Department of Recreation collaborated to pursue this football and baseball field, which is expected to open in time for the 2021 season.

Atlantic Fields of America, one of the more prominent field builders in the tri-state area, was the winning bid.

“This is the same organization who did Little Falls, Buckley Park and many other fields locally. The Atlantic Fields group won through a town open bid process administered by Borough Clerk Joe Wassel,” said Mark Monteyne, Totowa’s Recreation Director.

The changes include converting from natural grass to synthetic turf and adding more fencing and netting.

Under-field drainage is being added and improved.

“The actual transformation process is occurring at this time. The contractor put in drainage and leveled the baseball and football fields to prepare for turf placement,” Monteyne said.

According to the recreation director, the current field has been used for as long as he can remember. The multipurpose turf field can provide use after inclement weather and will be available more days of year.

“This will add healthy value to our Totowa Borough community. Our families will love it for years to come and life memories for all will be had.”

“The field has special meaning to me since my father coached me when I was five years old and my youngest son, Logan, who is 13 years old will be loving his final year at our PAL Football program,” Monteyne said. “Talk about the circle of life!”

Wassel, Councilwoman Debbie Andriani, Councilman Billy Bucher, DPW Superintendent Jim Niland and Monteyne put all the necessary information together for the bid. The community had the opportunity to provide input at the Council and Board of Rec meetings.
