Google Home and Amazon Echo offer very similar use experience when it comes to home control. But Google’s edge lies in its more advanced language capability and AI in the cloud. The Google Home ecosystem is taking shape, and this may lead to greater smart home adoption in the next couple of years.

Google Home Gains Popularity and on Its Way to Dominate Smart Home Space

oogle, Amazon and Apple are the biggest names in the still-developing smart home industry. The former two have launched speakers that can interpret human voice to turn on or off lights, thermostats, cameras, and various smart devices at home. Amazon appears to lead the way with its Alexa smart platform, which currently dominates the market by dictating compatibility from the greatest number of home appliances in the market. The e-commerce giant has also introduced the most number of voicerecognition devices, namely the Echo series, to enable even more home control possibilities. It does not necessarily mean Amazon will rule the market ever after. Google offers almost exactly the same services. The Google Assistant platform is also a popular integration choice for smart home product makers. The Google Home speakers have very similar functions as Amazon Echo. They are both great choices to control home devices with voice command. Google Home and Amazon Echo offer very similar use experience when it 10 mySMAhome.com 2017

comes to home control. Device makers essentially go through the same process when making Google Assistant or Alexa compatible products. The needed software and hardware components are very much alike. Google, however, has an edge over Amazon. That is, the great number of Android system users. There are two billion active users of Android phones. Consumers might be more likely to purchase Google Assistant devices because they are already used to it compared with Alexa, according to Robert Thompson, Chief Enablement Architect for i.MX Applications Processors at NXP Semiconductors. For example, when consumers see a voiceenabled coffeemaker, they’ll choose the one that works with Google. “When it comes to voice assistant, people want things that they are familiar with, that are compatible with their smartphones,” Thompson said.

Advanced Language Capability Google is also many steps ahead in its language ability. While Alexa currently supports only English and German,

Google has a much larger language knowledge because Android is available in 80 languages. “As of today, Google Home is deployed in more languages than Amazon and it is possible to use the Google Assistant from a smart phone,” said Jérôme Leroy, VP Sales & Marketing at smart lighting manufacturer WiZ. Some companies have also pointed out that Google provides a more intuitive, more natural language exchange experience. “Google Home allows user to naturally ask for switching on or off the light. To dim at the right level of intensity,” Leroy added.

AI in the Cloud In addition to its natural language ability, Google may also excel at cloud intelligence. Providing services and collecting data in many countries across the world, Google has accumulated vast amounts of data that can help it carry out analytics. The AI could be proven very useful in smart home applications. When a user talks to Google Home, the command will be sent to Google’s cloud, where the voice command is processed before the signal is passed to a home device.

“Really all the intelligence, such as asking a question or weather, goes on in the cloud, not the end devices,” NXP’s Thompson pointed out when asked to compare Alexa and Google Assistant from a home control perspective. Smart lighting solution company Leviton Manufacturing concurred. “While Amazon may own a lot of the space today, Google has major potential with its wealth of data and processing power,” said Tom Leonard, Vice President

of Marketing and Product Management for Leviton’s Energy Management Controls & Automation Division. Google’s AI has drawn some attention in the industry. Startup company Lynky is making a Google Assistant-powered touchscreen speaker that looks similar to Amazon’s Echo Show. “We believe Google will lend its AI experience to help solve some vexing smart home challenges such as setup, automation creation, etc.,” said Lynky’s product

manager Jerry Hou. Google is rolling out voice assistant on every Android phone, and has the potential to catch up very quickly to Alexa. The market could be dominated by both players in 2019, Thompson predicted.

Using Different Protocols In order to tap into the power of Google Home, connecting to Google’s cloud is required. A Wi-Fi device will usually connects via a router, while devices using Zigbee, Z-Wave or other protocols will need to be connected to a gateway. There are pros and cons to each method, said Chen Shaofeng, a software engineer at China-based Leedarson Lighting. A router can connects to only so many (fewer than 20) Wi-Fi devices, but a future smart home environment may need up to more 100 devices. Wi-Fi’s advantage is direct connection and no additional equipment is required. A gateway, on the other hand, can accommodate hundreds of Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. A gateway also enables better signal coverage. With Wi-Fi, a long distance to a router may compromise the

connectivity. Each of the two methods are suitable for different use cases, and the same lighting device may be made to enable Wi-Fi or gateway connectivity, to meet customers’ different demands, Chen said.

Two Ways to Enable Voice Control Manufacturers also often employ one of two ways to make their device compatible with Google Home. A manufacturer may embed an IoT module either right into a device or into a switch, said CD Liu, PM Director of electronics manufacturing company Good Way Technology.

Jerry Hou, Product n Manager at Lynky

“ We believe Google will lend its AI experience to help solve some vexing smart home challenges such as setup, automation creation, etc.”

Philips Hue, for example, have Zigbee modules inside light bulbs. It’s convenient, but the drawback is that a module is thrown away when a bulb reaches the end of life. This adds up to costs. The other way is to place the module inside an in-wall light switch to enable voice control. This way the module can still be used when a light needs to be replaced.

Google Home Helps to Grow Smart Home Adoption Google’s push to enable voice control has its impact in the industry. As it requests Google Home integration from third-party manufacturers, it is actually beefing up its smart home ecosystem. “Now without the integration you can’t seem to sell your products in Best Buy or Walmart. It wasn’t like this 3-4 years ago. And this helps the ecosystem to take shape,” said GK Lee, Vice President of mIoT Strategic Business Unit at D-Link, a Taiwan-based networking product manufacturer. With the increased convenience, the next step is consumer education. It might be that in 2018 and 2019 a home without smart devices will be perceived as out of fashion. It’s just a matter of time, Lee added.

Smart Button Still an Essential Smart Home Control Means When it comes to smart home control, smart buttons have merits unfound in voice control or app control. It’s quick and convenient. And because of this, smart buttons are unlikely to be phased out in the near future.

T

here are a few ways to control smart devices at home. The current mainstream control means are voice command and mobile app. Voice command is also a trending topic, as many predict it will grow more popular in the smart home space. App control is also convenient. Smartphones' ubiquity, portability and ease of use make it an ideal connection point to other home devices. That’s not to say these control means are without drawbacks. Even though people speak different languages and may have different accents, English is the most often used voice command. Devices receiving voice also need to be in range, so that users don’t have to shout across the house. Last but not least, the presence of background noise may prevent proper sound receiving. Mobile app is not perfect, either. The act of taking out the phone, opening up the app, selecting and tapping command is complex enough. Turning on home appliances with a switch or remote sounds easier. This is how smart buttons come into existence. Small in size and acting like a remote, smart buttons let homeowners control smart devices with just a click or two. Fibaro is one of the better-known smart button

makers. Its product the Button, for example, can be used to activate scenes, turn devices on/off, raise or lower light brightness or music volume. “The Button is extremely flexible and can be integrated into the home or offices, offering control with different click sequences,” said Rich Bira, Managing Director of Fibaro USA. Most smart buttons function by connecting to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. Acting as a bridge, the phone will then relay the command to various home appliances. The phone either sends the signal directly to the device or communicates via Wi-Fi to a platform like IFTTT which will then trigger actions on the devices. Flic, one of the earliest smart buttons introduced to the market, is an example that does all these.

New Development in the Industry Shortcut Labs, the company behind Flic, is rolling out a new product called Flic Hub. The hub will receive Bluetooth signals from smart buttons, so that the buttons can work independently of a smartphone. The hub can communicate to devices at home using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (+ Ethernet), Infrared and a 3.5mm jack for audio, essentially allowing it to control a myriad of home appliances. “The beauty of the Hub is that you no longer have to rely on your phone

commands. “Using the button to turn and control can be so much easier. There is no ambiguity and unlikely to have errors,” Huang added. Philio Technology’s round smart button lets users make incremental adjustments on lights, air conditioner and curtains to a certain degree, as opposed to completely turning on or off.

“One-touch control will continue to increase in demand due to its convenience, accessible price points and simplicity.”

“The demand for smart buttons, automating things, has increased.”

“Not until smart devices are more broadly adopted by the public can demand for smart buttons continue to grow.”

as the gateway, giving you a much more reliable and stable connection,” the company says. Flic Hub can link to up to 64 smart buttons. Production is already underway and shipping will start around early next year, according to Shortcut Labs cofounder Amir Sharifat. Another development of smart buttons is Apple HomeKit compatibility. HomeKit enables homeowners to invite another person via their Apple ID so they can control lights and heating in your house as well. This way, your partner and kids can use their mobile devices to set scenes in the rooms they’re in. “However, you’ll not want to give each and every visitor full access to your setup, and that’s where buttons come in,” said Lars Felber, PR Director of Elgato, a home automation enabler based in Germany. Besides Elgato, France-based smart home solution company Nodon also plans to add HomeKit compatibility to its smart button NIU. Released about a year ago, NIU connects to users’ smartphone via Bluetooth, and can trigger actions such as light control, music control and is also compatible with IFTTT to control even more appliances.

Uncertain Market Demand Despites smart button’s usefulness, not every business is upbeat about the market demand. Only a select group is adopting smart homes. As such, the demand for smart buttons is not growing, according to QBlinks, another early entrant in the smart button space. “Not until smart devices are more broadly adopted by the public can demand for smart buttons continue to grow. In other words, the next wave of demand will arrive only after smart appliances become universal,” said Farry Hsu, Marketing and Public Relations Manager at QBlinks. Philio Technology, an IoT solution company that also makes smart buttons, concurred. “The demand has not really picked up. The reason is that smart home is not universal. The price has to come down before there is more adoption,” said James Huang, CEO of Philio Technology. Smart buttons, thanks to their unique capability, will probably stay in homes in the foreseeable future, however. Voice command is the future trend, but it will take time, Huang said. Out of the 10 commands given, often only 3-4 is recognized, forcing users to repeat

Voice Command vs. Smart Buttons Some believe smart button and voice command are complimentary to each other. Voice command is ideal for spontaneous command. For example, when seeing a McDonald TV commercial, a user may want to place an order immediately, so they can just say, “OK Google, where is the closest McDonald.” For certain on-demand requests, voice command is easier. “Voice command has advanced features, and allows you to do whatever you want,” said Nodon CEO Thomas Gauthier. Smart buttons, on the other hand, are better for repetitive actions. For example, turning on the light and TV when arriving home, and shutting down everything when leaving the house. People could get tired of saying the same commands over and over every day, and using buttons to complete the tasks is easier, said Shortcut Labs’ Sharifat. Smart buttons also have a greater range than voice control. While voice control requires users to be near the voice assistant, smart buttons allow them to control their home automation and scenes from outside of the home. With Fibaro’s Key Fob, for example, a user could pull into their driveway in their vehicle and press a button that activates the “welcome home” scene, where the garage opens, and lights and heating turn on. “While voice control is certainly very popular, at Fibaro we believe in giving consumers several options for controlling their connected devices. One-touch control will continue to increase in demand due to its convenience, accessible price points and simplicity,” Bira said.

Smart Sensors and Buttons Serve the Elderly at Home Today Many believe there is going to be much unmet demand in the elderly care market in the years to come. Smart devices may be used to answer some of the most pressing questions in the field. Sensors and buttons, which can transmit data instantaneously to the air, are currently the mostly widely adopted IoT devices in the home care space.

T

he aging population is growing. It’s a common scenario around the world, especially in developed countries. In Japan, for example, senior citizens make up a whopping 27% of the total population. A lot of seniors will prefer to stay at home, and how to apply Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to bring about greater convenience or enable assisted living is a subject worth exploring. Senior care is an underserved market. Companies ■ Courtesy of MivaTek

have sensed the market potential and offered products/services that utilize IoT technologies. Motion sensor is a good tool to enable automation to assist the elderly. One application is placing it on the bedside to trigger light switching. This way, when an elderly person gets up from the bed to use the toilet in the middle of the night, the light will be switched on automatically, and he won’t have to bother with feeling for the switch in the dark. This solution is offered by Full Enterprise, an IoT enabler based in Taiwan. Falls most often occur in the bathroom and when the elderly get off the bed in the middle of the night, due to osteoporosis and the darkness, said James Yih, General Manager of Full Enterprise. “We have

programmed everything so that the lights will turn on and off automatically. IoT is completely applicable in such situations.” Sensors can also be deployed to track movement at home. Fibaro’s motion sensors, for example, can be installed in a home to detect if the resident is active and entering different areas of the home. If motion hasn’t been sensed, a caretaker will be signaled to check in on the resident. Door and window sensors can also send notifications if a resident has left or entered the home. Fibaro solutions are also extremely helpful for the elderly who want to remain in their homes but need the comfort of a watchful eye, said Rich Bira, Managing Director of Fibaro USA. "Sensors, controllers and other devices from Fibaro’s suite help families monitor their loved ones through real-time app

notifications, allowing them to safely age in place.”

AI to Detect Behavioral Changes The sensor technology can be pushed further to integrate artificial intelligence, which can identify which rooms are used at what times of the day, and determine if there are changes in the resident's habits that might indicate a health issue. Israel-based Essence Group has developed an algorithm-based system that monitors daily activities of elderly people who live at home by themselves. The company’s cloud will perform analytics with data collected from all the detection devices (sensors) around the house. Alerts to caretakers will be sent when anomalies or changes in the behaviors are detected. “It’s not an

Sensors may also be modified to check on the elderly’s medicine intake. IoT solution provider MivaTek have made

sensors tailor-made for this purpose. The sensors can be attached on a medicine container or even a water bottle, to track on the frequency of drug or water consumption. The company’s medication dispenser device can even lock the lid to prevent excessive consumption, or send a reminder and notification to caretakers if a senior has not taken the medicine on time. Another use of sensor in elderly care application is placing it in the bed. The sensor can measure pulse, heart rate, blood pressure or sleep quality. Although the measurement in the bedding may not be 100% accurate, it does provide a preliminary gauge of the user’s overall physical condition, and will detect major anomalies and send them to caretakers or doctors for diagnosis.

Push Button to Seek Help Another smart device that can be very helpful to assist seniors is button. With the push of a button, seniors may turn on the light or other home appliances for enhanced convenience. But the more common application is using it as a panic button for distress calls. Buttons can be placed in different areas of the house, like living room and bathroom, so that an elderly person can reach them whenever there is an emergency. By pressing the button, a notification will be sent to a family member or caretaker who will call back to check on the senior. The button can also be a portable

device to let seniors send notifications for help more easily. NIU, a smart button provided by France-based home automation company NodOn, serves this purpose. NIU is available as an OEM solution. It connects to a smartphone App via Bluetooth. Thomas Gauthier, CEO of NodOn said, “One of our client, in the homecare sector, wanted a button to trigger an emergency call. We provided them NIU SDK to add the button to their App. This way, the user just uses the App of our client, and will be directly called back by a nurse or a doctor when he presses NIU.”

Upgraded Button with Fall Detection and Geolocation Besides sending distress calls, a button can be added with fall detection capability. The EPA button provided by Essence is a case in point. It also has geolocation capability, so when the user falls, an alert will be sent to family members or a monitoring center, and they’ll know where the user is and send help. The button works both indoors and outdoors. The button connects over RF to a home gateway, but will automatically switch to a user’s smartphone via Bluetooth when he leaves the house.

“ Elderly care systems are installed in some rental homes in Japan to attract consumer attention.”

n Li Li, Vice President of Technology Development at ElderSens

“ Fall detection worn on the neck or wrist may generate many false alarms. The waist is the better place.” Many of the portable buttons hang over the user’s neck, but Silicon Valleybased startup ElderSens recently introduced a fall detector that is attached to the user’s waist. Fall detection essentially utilizes the sensor technology. “The waist is the most stable part of the body. Fall detection worn on the neck or wrist may generate many false alarms,” said Li Li, ElderSens’ Vice President of Technology Development. ElderSens’ fall detection system also features a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Hybrid indoor mesh network. It is a critical but not a mature technology, Li said. ElderSens sets up multiple routers in the house to create comprehensive coverage. This is needed in order to pinpoint the exact fall location indoors.

Expanding Smart Home Solutions for Better

Business Services & Surroundings Ongoing development of smart solutions are bringing more technologies and devices from home to smart businesses, helpfully removing the obstacles for an upgraded living experience and management. In the following five examples, we can find smart energy solutions in hotel, wireless air monitoring in museums, and home deliveries in America and northern Europe.

W

hen it comes to saving energy, people has air conditioner and lights first in mind. How do we apply and enjoy the functions of these products without paying expensive bills? The US-based fan and lighting expert Big Ass Fan Company has a solution. Olas Verdes Resort in Costa Rica wanted a LEED Platinum certification. The LEED Platinum certification is designed for hospitality industry and buildings

to lessen their carbon footprint and make a positive impact on environment. Hotels can be certified only with their eco-friendly practices, which often refer to energy and water efficiency. And Olas Verdes Resort worked with Haiku Fans by Big Ass Fan Company to achieve this certification. With the need to take advantage of the frequent winds and to minimize the heat generated by sun, Olas Verdes Resort installed 70 Haiku Fans to create the most energy efficient space. Every suite features two Haiku Fans, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. According to Olas Verdes Resort, the fans made it possible to eliminate air conditioning in the living room entirely. Fans are also installed in the resort’s offices, entertainment venue and restaurant. Also, the Haiku Fans comes with built-in LED lights, meaning a total of less lights needed in each suite. According to Olas Verdes Resort, the tourists have positive reviews on Haiku Fans, as it can create comfortable airflow in the room, keep mosquitoes away, and stay silent while operation.

Strict Art Protection Meets FilesThruTheAir Environmental Wi-Fi Sensors Plenty of smart homes include an environmental sensor in the appliance series, either for precisely monitoring the indoor air status or connecting with smart thermostats to complete personal environment adjustments. platform for comprehensive analysis. Museums and Heritage Association of Antwerp enjoys FilesThruTheAir Environmental Wi-Fi Sensors with a constant monitoring of temperature and humidity from multiple sites. This enables the staffs to deal with artifact preserve in a more-efficient way. Another key is that FilesThruTheAir remote monitoring system provides automated alerts whenever it detects the temperature is going out of range. These alerts can be sent to multiple people so that they can be responded to within seconds.

August Home Partners with Walmart and Deliv to Deliver Packages Straight into Homes

▲ August Home, Walmart and Deliv have been cooperating to test new grocery shopping concepts in the Silicon Valley area.

S

mart home brand August Home, retailer Walmart and delivery firm Deliv have been cooperating to test new grocery shopping concepts with selected August Home customers in the Silicon Valley area. Customers place an order on Walmart for items or groceries first, and when the order is ready to go, the Deliv specialist retrieves packages and brings them to customers’ homes. If no one answers the door, the specialist will have a one-time passcode to enter the home access using the August Smart Lock.

Homeowners, at the same time, are still in control of the experience the entire time. The moment the delivery arrives, they receive a notification on smartphone that the delivery is occurring. When connected to a home camera, they can even choose to watch the delivery take place in real-time video through the August app or view a recording of it any time through the August app. After the package is correctly placed, homeowners can watch the Deliv specialist exit and the door automatically locks behind them – securely with August’s DoorSense technology. Later, a final alert confirms the door is locked and delivery completed. “This may not be for everyone – and certainly not right away – but we want to offer customers the opportunity to help us shape what commerce will look like in the future,” said Sloan Eddleston, vice president of eCommerce Strategy & Business Operations at Walmart, in a statement.

ately, customers can also enjoy convenient home deliveries with Amazon service. To get started, users need to equip with the Amazon Key In-Home Kit, starting at $249.99. The kit includes: the Amazon Cloud Cam Key Edition indoor security camera and a compatible smart lock from Kwikset or Yale. Users’ selection “FREE in-home delivery” is also a key step. On delivery day, users will first receive a notification for when the delivery driver will arrive, and get another real-time alert right before the driver arrives to optionally watch the delivery happening. The driver will knock first and then request to unlock the door with Amazon handheld scanner, and Amazon will verify that the package belongs to the coordinate address, triggers Amazon Cloud Cam, and unlocks the door. No special codes or keys are given to the driver. One last notifications will be sent to users after the door is relocked. The service will be launched in just 37 metro areas in the US, starting early November 2017.

The Smart Home that Actively Thinks: ABB

O

ne morning in December the alarm clock rings at 6:30 a.m., it’s time to get up. Not a very pleasant thought if it’s still dark outside and bitterly cold. Yet, if you know that a preheated bathroom is waiting for you, it’s much easier to get out of bed. This is made possible with intelligent radiator thermostats. Thanks to digital heating technology the heating switches itself on at the desired time to the preset temperature. In addition, the intelligent heating control is also connected with the window sensor. As soon as the resident opens the window after he has had his morning shower, the thermostat receives the radio signal that the window is tilted. The heating responds immediately and moves into reduction mode, and so prevents the unnecessary use of energy.

Efficiency for One’s Own Four Walls “Those who automate and network the heating, lighting and the control of blinds, as well as all routine tasks in the home with smart applications, save energy”, explains Mike Mustapha, Managing Director of Business Unit Building Products at ABB, the world’s leading company in the building automation sector. The smart solutions from ABB adapt the consumption of energy to the personal daily routine of the residents. “Technical devices and functions are activated only when they are really needed,” Mustapha adds. “Digital networking therefore not only increases

A home that actively thinks, takes over the tasks of daily life and saves energy whenever possible – this is ensured with Smart Home solutions from ABB; the world’s leading company in the building automation sector. Once they are integrated into the daily routine, they adapt themselves to the habits of the resident and contribute to energy-efficient everyday life.

comfort in the home, but also has a high potential to save energy and therefore reduce expenditure, helping offset the cost of installation.” A large part of the energy can be saved in the regulation of heating and air-conditioning: the high heating costs are often due to the fact that home owners either heat too much or at the wrong time. According to a study conducted by the Institute for Building Systems Engineering Dresden, with heating according to requirement, the consumption of energy can be reduced by up to 15 percent. Even greater energy efficiency within the four walls of the home is provided by the Geofencing function, which can be integrated into the intelligent home control. With GPS and the Geofencing app, residents can define a virtual boundary around their house. If this virtual boundary is exceeded by the user with his registered mobile terminal device, the automated actions are triggered, such as the reduction of the heating or the deactivation of all the lights in the house. “With this we offer a practical solution for everyone who, for example, leaves the house in a rush in the morning”, emphasizes Mustapha. “They no longer need to worry about whether all the lights in the house have been switched off.” It is also possible to switch everything off simultaneously with the everything-off function with the smartphone while travelling.

Using the Weather Intelligently A lot of energy can also be saved throughout the day in an intelligent household. Automatically controlled blinds and heaters optimally use the state of the weather in connection with the weather station. Roller blinds serve in the summer as automated sun protection and keep

50 mySMAhome.com 2017

the temperature pleasantly cool in living rooms. Meanwhile, when it is cold outside, the incoming sunlight can be used to save heating costs, heating rooms with the natural heat of the sun. In the evening, the lowered blinds retain the warmth in the house and provide additional insulation. In a Smart Home the energy from the sun can also be efficiently used in other ways. A photovoltaic system creates solar power during the day with which an intelligent solar storage system is charged. “The generated power is used at a later point in time, such as when it is really needed: in the evening, for example, when the residents come home after a long day at work, is how Mike Mustapha explains the advantages of the integration of solar energy into the smart home. The anticipation of a warm and cozy living room with dimmed lights is especially important at the end of the working day. Thanks to Geofencing, these conveniences can be activated before anyone gets home. As soon as a resident gets within the detection radius of the house with his smartphone, the devices and functions that were switched off or regulated down during the day, switch on again. At his return he is welcomed, for example, by an illuminated entrance to the house, inviting light in the corridor or dimmed light in the living room. And when

the self-produced and previously stored solar power is used, a perfect energy-saving day draws to a close.

How Smart Home Automation Tools are Simplifying the Lives of Property Managers and Attracting Renters: Rently

S

mart home technology is the wave of the future for many reasons; most of which centers around convenience, not just for the renter, but for the property manager as well. While smart home technology is changing the way renters interact with their homes, it is also changing the way property managers monitor and manage their portfolio. Not only do smart home tools meet the preferences of techsavvy millennial renters, but they provide property managers with a wide range of financial and operational benefits, often through an easy-to-use cloud-based platform accessible via WiFi or cellular.

TOP FIVE WAYS PROPERTY MANAGERS CAN BENEFIT FROM SMART HOME AUTOMATION TOOLS Property managers can reduce operational waste by eliminating keys and re-keying. Installing smart home automation tools for property managers can begin as easily as integrating electronic deadbolts, eliminating the need for physical keys in favor of push button or touchscreen keypads. There is no wiring required and the locks can be installed in minutes using only a screwdriver.

52 mySMAhome.com 2017

In just the last few years, providing digital living technology in an apartment or home rental has become a must have amenity – especially if a property manager wants to attract the millennialaged tenants that are willing to pay higher rent for these features.

Property managers can streamline access control. Leveraging the keyless lock system, property managers are able to streamline access controls with duration codes for maintenance and contractors or potential renters viewing the property. Property managers no longer have to waste time coordinating these types of entries or traveling back and forth to allow access. Property managers can deliver enhanced security. With a keyless lock system, property managers or renters can lock, unlock and monitor a home right from a smartphone and access a complete audit log to keep track of when guests enter a property. Property managers can manage energy through consumption and predictive maintenance. Property managers can set thermostat schedules and limits for unoccupied properties and can hand off control to long term renters in apartments and homes via an app or online portal. This allows property managers or long-term renters to save on utility bills by remotely adjusting temperatures and setting seasonal schedules. Property managers are able to increase rent for smart facilities. A survey by Wakefield Research found that 86 percent of millennials living in multi-family dwellings were willing to pay more for a "smart" apartment and on average would pay nearly a fifth more rent for smart home features. Today’s tech-savvy renters expect more from properties and property managers are looking for new ways to attract renters. Smart home functionality makes sense for both sides, meeting the luxury requirements of millennial renters and bringing in financial and operational benefits for the property manager.

eQ-3’s Homematic IP Ensures Data Security in a Smart Home Environment

G

ermany-based eQ-3 is known for its pioneering solution to secure smart home wireless networks. Based on the whole-home solutions and electronic radiator thermostats installed, eQ-3 is aware of the security gaps that damage consumer trust. Next to using generally accepted security techniques such as AES-128 and CCM, obtaining security certification from an independent institute is key for any companies providing smart home systems. Smart home system Homematic IP, which hit the market two years ago, is based on the next-generation Internet protocol IPv6 and uses the 868 MHz radio channel to offer permanent bidirectional communication. Just recently, Homematic IP was tested in an extensive inspection by the VDE institute, which is known globally as an independent and reliable testing agency for electrical engineering, electronics and information technology applications. In addition, the VDE has a good reputation for testing IT and data security in a smart home environment. The VDE testing certification mark is accepted worldwide.

▲ Bernd Grohmann, Executive Vice President, Deputy Chairman and CTO at eQ-3, accepts VDE certification for Homematic IP.

54 mySMAhome.com 2017

In this connected world where smart home is the latest trend, data and information security is a major issue. Customers want to be sure that their smart home system is protected against unauthorized access. Assuring a high level of data security is the responsibility of any manufacturer.

The testing results testify Homematic IP’s ability to assure data security. The certification includes Homematic IP’s IT security, smartphone app, cloud software and access point gateway. For the first time, the system also received security certification for its wireless protocol. As such, Homematic IP is evidently a smart home solution with the highest security standards. The security certificate was presented formally by the VDE during the IFA 2017 in Berlin where eQ-3 showcased more than 50 different components for Homematic IP alone. Bernd Grohmann, Executive Vice President, Deputy Chairman and CTO at eQ-3, said this is proof as well as justification for the huge effort the company has invested to optimize security measures. “We are aware of our distinct responsibility as manufacturer because security gaps can damage the trust of customers in specific products or the entire smart home sector”, he said. Grohmann also added that IT and data security is a crucial aspect for the whole industry. In addition, eQ-3 intentionally refrains from collecting personal data for the installation and use of Homematic IP, and its cloud service operates completely anonymously. Therefore, the system can offer a secure solution for customers, especially with regard to privacy assurance.

IoT Technologies Can Help Elderly Care Immensely: Full Enterprise

T

aiwan-based Full Enterprise has designed a number of homecare solutions that utilize Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, which the company believes is critical to tackle the growing aging population problem. Fall detection, geo-location and SOS calls are the technologies most needed by today’s elderly, according to Full Enterprise General Manager James Yih. The company makes panic buttons that can be pressed by an elderly to trigger a warning for caretakers. The button is also equipped with the geo-location tracking capability to detect the senior’s whereabouts. The device is linked to the caretaker’s back-end system or the mobile app of a family member, so that they can monitor the elderly’s state of wellbeing in real time. The device can also be attached to a walking crane or other walking support equipment, so that a senior can use it at any time. The crane has a camera to record a footage in the event of a fall, and the video clip can be sent to family members to show what happened. The device also allows for a short dialogue between the elderly and family members in an emergency. With the geo-location function, caretakers will know where the senior is located. Full Enterprise has developed more than 100 smart devices. Its solutions utilize Zigbee communication standard, which

James Yih, General Manager at Full Enterprise

the company claims allows for expandability, easy setup and low power consumption. Full Enterprise’s devices applied for home use include gas and water leak detectors. When anomalies are detected in the environment, warning will be triggered via changing light colors or blasting sound, besides sending mobile app alerts. To make it easier for the elderly, home appliances may be controlled by voice, mobile app, buttons or plain automation, which means appliances will turn on and off automatically at the right time. Full Enterprise is trying to make a system that allows an elderly to control various appliances from the bed. For instance, an IP camera at the door may be linked to a tablet or mobile phone, to let an elderly control the entry from his bed. “We want to return seniors the ability to live, so that they may live independently on their own, to re-gain their confidence and find self-worth in life again,” said Yih. “It’s impossible to completely depend on others and summon their assistance all the time. It’s true even for your own kids and wife.” The idea is to apply IoT in home care and everyday lives. Full Enterprise knows the technology, but it needs to have domain knowledge in order to provide solutions tailored to enduser needs. “To stay competitive in this industry, we need to be very professional, we need to understand the lives of end-users, so that our engineers can write the right program to collect the needed data for elderly care,” Yih said.

One Sharp Choice Leads to Unlimited Possibilities and Connections: Overkiz

F

rench OEM infrastructure developer Overkiz is specialized in connectivity solutions from different manufacturers and technologies for home and building automation. It manages to achieve interoperability between protocols and standards, creating a high compatibility for utility brands and service providers.

A Marketplace that Links Partners Together To concretize the main concept, Matthieu de Broca, International Business Development Director of Overkiz, told SMAhome, “To use a figure of speech, people could view Overkiz’s IoT dedicated cloud as a powerful translator that simultaneously steams multi-complex languages altogether. But in the case of HVAC appliances, those languages are protocols such as ZigBee, EnOcean, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RTS and Z-Wave, among few. Surfing on open radio frequencies, the Overkiz smart solution manages the back-end communication behind the end-user’s interface via adapted antennas, which allows a smooth device control at home and in the building, significantly simplifying maintenance matters.” Overkiz develops comprehensive back-end smart solutions on a white-label basis, which allow global tier-1 MNCs to embed this turnkey platform behind their brand name. Supporting 20 wireless and wired protocols, Overkiz turns into a trustworthy partner, starting with its main shareholder, Somfy group. With multiple solution experience, Overkiz provides customized services based on the need of partners. For product manufacturers like ventilation, heating, and lighting companies, can work with Overkiz to develop compatible software or build maintenance service for their specific hardware products. Also, Overkiz can deliver end-to-end connectivity between products and sensors. On the other hand, for distributors and wholesalers who only sell devices of other brands, Overkiz produces integrated user interface to enable compatibility for all products in one service portal. In this way, the solution becomes the bridge for a list of products to communicate with each other. Leveraging on the cooperation with Bouygues Immobilier, Groupe Atlantic, Hitachi, and Somfy, Overkiz is deploying its operations all over Europe and expanding to JAPAC region.

When an exclusive platform offers all services and product connections that hit right on your requirement, no extra choice is needed and no more dilemma between provider options.

Matthieu de Broca, International Business Development Director of Overkiz

With an expectation to work with more international real estate developers in smart homes, commercial buildings, and collective housing, Broca said Overkiz’s platform includes many services and suppliers together to create a fluid business model for decision makers. “If a decision maker has only one choice, Overkiz’s technology can be the one as users are not limited by protocols, providers, or brands. This is our main superiority,” added Broca. “We’ve gained positive reviews as most of our business clients are doing more than a billion euro turnover in their business.”

Interoperability is Key to Cope with Fastgrowing Smart Home Markets Broca sees the next five years a booming smart home market as the technology is getting simpler and more affordable for users. “Smart home market is rising from early stage into mass-adapter stage, which is a good sign for product manufacturers and solution vendors like us. Big players like Amazon, Google, or Alibaba who have AI speakers will drive the user adoption from the product price, making it more competitive in the hardware market.” From his point of view, the key to be a successful smart home solution relies on interoperability. “It’s reasonable to affirm that users don’t want 20 different smartphone apps to control their homes. Consequently, Overkiz’s all-in-one interface becomes a must-have for appliance manufacturers,” said Broca, “Going forward, Overkiz facilitates the way into market without users doing every step by themselves. We have made all choices possible in our ecosystem with benefit to all users.”

Optimized Efficiency Solutions to Directly Reduce Home Energy Bills: NorthQ

F

ounded in 2007, Copenhagen-based enterprise NorthQ is specializing in Internet of Things with a main focus on manufacturing and developing home automation and energy optimization solutions. At its early stage, the first power readers of NorthQ were developed cooperatively with Dong Energy, the largest power utility in Denmark. The power readers were able to transfer electricity and gas consumption for users’ review. Based on this background experience, NorthQ also developed its cloud-based smart home platform along with its gateways, devices for energy monitoring and control, and security devices. The home solutions help property owners in increasing energy efficiency and reducing the costs for households. Apart from its own hardware products, NorthQ has been cooperating with various manufacturers such as Danfoss, Fibaro, Philio, and Qubino to provide customized IoT platform services. “Our new energy reader is designed for measuring the energy consumption of business customers. They can also build their own user interface and app on top of our IoT platform,” explained Christian Ulrik Von Scholten, CEO & Co-Founder of NorthQ. “We want to integrate the NorthQ solutions with more service providers. Using NorthQ’s technology, they will be able to develop better services for their end-users or to improve the user interface of their software.” Von Scholten explained that the widespread awareness of the environmental changes and the rising cost of energy push consumers to reconsider their way of energy usage. “People never thought about this matter in the past because they were unable to Business enterprises and end users can enjoy an efficient management of their energy usage.

measure their energy consumption, but now, when they use our products they realize how much energy they’ve been wasting. People become more conscious and are willing to reduce the consumption as it is directly related to their bills.” Von Scholten sees the key differences between European and Asian smart energy. “European market is complicated as the energy price, preferred brands, user habits and culture can vary greatly in different countries. In Asia, on the other hand, the energy prices are lower, so the motivation for endusers to reduce consumption is not high enough,” he analyzed. “However, when we take business clients such as malls and high-rise buildings into consideration, the energy consumption is comparatively high. The incentives for such client to reduce energy consumption are much higher and by implementing energy metering and management systems they can accomplish significant savings.” “For the current stage, software technology is the key for development. If companies don’t provide solutions for consumers, there is no market,” said von Scholten. “Our goal is to build the biggest metering platform in the world, and we will keep working on NorthQ’s complete solution for remote monitoring and energy optimization and create more convenience in the smart home.”

Demand for Smart Home Products Surges across the UK

D

emand for smart home products is booming in the UK, with smart hub being the most sought-after product in the next few months, according to a research from Maplin, the UK’s specialist technology retailer. Almost a quarter (24 percent) of people in the UK now own a smart home product. This uplift in demand has been reflected in Maplin’s sales of smart home technology which has jumped 135 percent year-on-year. Consumers who bought smart home products spent an average GBP 174 on the technology over the past year. With 71 percent of consumers

considering buying their first or additional smart home products, the smart home market in the UK has the potential to be worth more than GBP 6 billion a year, according to Maplin’s in-house data. The survey also found that consumers view leaving the lights on (46 percent) and forgetting to switch off plugs (37 percent) to be the top bugbears in the home which can be solved with smart technology. Because they offer a solution to these problems, smart plugs have become Maplin’s best-selling smart product, with smart lighting the fourth best-seller.

Indian Smart Home Market Sees Significant Growth over the Past Three Years

T

he smart home market in India has grown significantly in the last three years, according to the “India Smart Home Market Overview, 2017-2022” report released by Research and Markets. The smart home market which consists of mainly three segments has seen a higher adoption ratio of automation in the hospitality sector. The reason is obvious that premium hotels need to provide

sophisticated luxuries to their customers. Though the share of commercial segment is very small, it has registered the highest growth rate in the last few years. The residential market, on other hand, is moving in the upward direction at an even pace. The smart home market in India has witnessed tremendous growth in terms of value as well as volume. Home automation

has been considered as a product/service for rich people few years back, since the cost of automation is not at all suitable to the pockets of large population in the country. Nonetheless, even though there are people who can easily afford automation solutions, the overall adoption ratio is still negligible.

Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry Fosters New Innovations and Smart Home Development When it comes to energy saving in smart home, due to the high installation cost and maintenance hassles, existing home energy management system (HEMS) often cannot provide a detailed, full-scale electricity use monitoring on every power line and appliance. To address this issue, with the support of the Industry Development Task Force on Smart Home Devices and Applications at the Institute for Information Industry (III) in Taiwan, startup 3Egreen has developed the innovative BLE Clamp Meter. The III presented full-scale electricity management solutions at the 2017 SMAhome International Conference & Exhibition held in Bangkok between Nov. 16 and 18. Once 3Egreen’s meter is clamped on any power line, it can measure electric use of all appliances in real time and will upload the data to the cloud via Bluetooth. All the electric use data from home or any place with a power line will be captured and analyzed to detect and redress anomalies. Also, the environmentally friendly BLE Clamp Meter uses rechargeable battery and reuses the consumed electromagnetic energy, so the battery does not have to be changed. Its super low cost and easy installation allow for mass deployment and data visualization of electricity consumption in everyday life. This solution has been introduced to homes and communities in Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore and Thailand.

New Advances in Wireless Network The III Industry Development Task Force facilitated the collaboration between 3Egreen and module developers to develop a NB-IoT/BLE heterogeneous network gateway. Undergoing field tests at the moment, it has been tested and connected to the NB-IoT base station developed by the III, and the interoperability test with the NB-IoT base stations of various telecommunications carriers and equipment manufacturers has been completed. In addition, the III task force also helped Taiwanese startup Ubiik develop Weightless-P, a LPWAN technology which boasts bidirectional communication, long-range transmission of over 2 km and over-the-air firmware upgrade. The very first Weightless-P module and base station used in soil temperature and moisture monitoring in agriculture has been launched and shipped to many countries. Ubiik has also finished the first-stage lab test. Weightless-P will be used in the smart grid connecting smart homes and smart cities. To incubate system integration of smart home, smart community and smart city, the III task force has joined forces with Allion Labs, a testing and certification firm in Taiwan, to establish IoT Innovation Center, which targets companies in the greater Taichung region for testing first. This Center helps companies with the development and certification of IoT products and services. IoT common platform suite allows data gathered from various connected devices to be uploaded to the cloud. Machine learning, automatic analysis and prediction are used to monetize big data, collect business intelligence and optimize services.
