EDITOR’S NOTE Explore the Niche Applications of Security Technology When security technologies, like video analytics, facial recognition and access control, start to greatly utilize artificial intelligence (AI), big data, cloud and the Internet of Things (IoT), the combined benefits and applications could be innumerable and even surpass our imagination. Recently, some global news press stated that railways in Europe might become the next possible target for terrorist attacks. The planned attack on trains may cause derailments and the damage could be huge. The derailment death toll in India this year reached a record high in the last decade. ecent news of shooting incidents have raised concerns about gun safety and the need for increased safety and security. Giving law enforcement agencies the tools to quickly detect and respond to gunfire incidents is an important part of reducing casualties for these types of events. Many developers have created technologies that not only detect gunshots but give accurate information such as the location of the sound and the type of guns being used.

mart locks are gaining popularity due to the convenience they provide. But given the rampancy of cyberattacks these days, the security of devices, including smart locks, is also important. According to Hans Overgaard, CEO of Poly-Control, owner of the Danalock brand of smart locks, the benefits of these locks are manifold. “The Danalock has many features, but one of the most important ones is that you can control and monitor your door lock with your phone. You can grant temporary or permanent virtual keys to others, and you can revoke their access again with a press of a button,” he said. “If you compare the Danalock to a traditional, manual door lock, the differences are many. With Danalock you don’t have to carry around keys anymore. You don’t have to risk that someone loses the key, and as a consequence you have to change the door lock. You can give temporary entrances for your contractor, TV guy, delivery guy, or who you would like — the entry allowance can always be revoked instantly. You can always monitor who walks in and out of your house, and when they do it.” With an increasing number of smart lock products in the market, Overgaard said the Danalock stands out in many ways, one of which is the security it provides. “Compared to our competitors’ products, the Danalock is much safer, smaller and faster. Danalock uses AES 256 encryption, which makes it much safer.”
According to Overgaard, his company places a strong focus on openness and integration. “Openness and integration have always been very important to us. Thus, we have had a great focus on the most widespread radio technologies like Z-Wave, Zigbee and Bluetooth. Today, we offer the Danalock with these technologies and HomeKit is just around the corner,” he said. “But not only on the hardware side have we thought about integration. Our APIs and SDKs let our partners easily integrate the benefits of the Danalock.” He said that amid the paradigm shift from traditional to smart locks, demands for the latter will only increase. “The biggest driver in this market will be the derived values that can be delivered when having a smart lock on the door. Homecare and house cleaning is more of the great possibilities that is being enabled for new players in the market when a smart lock is installed. According to IHS Markit, the amount of data produced in just one day by all the new video surveillance cameras installed worldwide in 2015 was 566 petabytes; this translates into 11.3 million standard double-layer Blu-ray movie discs, all Netflix’s users at the time streaming 1.2 hours of ultra-high definition content simultaneously, or about twice the amount of all user data stored by Facebook at the time. Contributing to this data is a growth in cameras. While IHS forecasted that some 98 million network surveillance cameras would be shipped in 2017, it mentions that globally, the video surveillance market is still not saturated and expects to see a CAGR of 20 percent in new camera unit shipments from 2014 to 2019.

Adding to that is the fact cameras are increasingly moving towards ultra-high definition (UHD). While IHS analyzed that volumes of 4K cameras remained low in 2016 — less than 1 percent of the 66 million network cameras shipped — it predicted that starting in 2018, the industry may see over a million 4K network cameras units shipped in a calendar year. Longer video retention, meanwhile, also plays a large role in the amount of data generated. Dynamic Network Factory, in one of its blog posts, said that generally, 30 days to 90 days period of surveillance recording is followed. “This includes European continent, where a standard of 30 days minimum/ maximum is followed. But this can be altered as per the requirements of the surveillance needs of an organization/enterprise,”

This means keeping the specified number of days for storage — no more and no less. With the advent of 4K resolution cameras and the demand for higher image quality, 24/7

recording and longer retention times, even a medium-sized system can end up requiring a lot of disk capacity. Unless a purpose-designed system is used, the TCO can be much greater than originally envisaged and the system lifetime shorter than promised.” Given cost-effectiveness is a major requirement for SMBs, solutions providers roll out products that suit this particular need. “We have one city center system end user who required a complete mirror of their storage on a separate site, but could not afford to have a fully duplicated WAN and VMS for redundant recording,” McLeod said. “We developed a direct-to-
Questions to Ask Before Purchasing a Storage Solution Purchasing the right video storage solutions isn’t always easy. With more video data being produced and retention periods getting longer, keeping those data safe and secure requires considerations on various factors, including ease of use and integration with other systems. That was the point raised by Axis Communications in its recent blog post, “9 questions to consider before purchasing a recording solution.” “You often need to consider a number of factors before you feel comfortable enough tying your business to any kind of surveillance hardware. The result could ensure you’re using a recording solution that will meet (or even exceed) your security objectives,” the post said. To select the right storage, Axis has several suggestions which can be summarized as follows. Ease of Installation and Use According to Axis, storage is supposed to be easy to set up and use. “Fortunately, some network video recorders come out of the box ready as a plug-and-play solution. These NVRs are preloaded with video management software (VMS), licenses and all the features you would need,” the company said. “While installing an NVR may be simple, if it’s difficult to operate, users may have a hard time navigating the system or reacting quickly to an incident. Video management systems with intuitive interfaces allow users to painlessly monitor business environments with features such as easy-to-
identify icons, menus that are simple to navigate, and the option to operate a pan, tilt, zoom camera with just a few clicks.” Integration Open platforms are important as NVRs built on open platforms are likely to integrate with different brands of IP cameras. “When systems allow for thirdparty integration, users could have the ability to operate and manage various devices on the network all from one place. This means you could open a door with a click within the VMS interface, or make a live or recorded announcement through a network speaker,” Axis said. Accessibility and Scalability According to Axis, in today’s businesses most professionals don’t have time to travel daily to each of their business locations to review alerts or analyze footage. This can be resolved with modern NVRs, which allow people to view live or recorded footage remotely over the network, it said. The scalability of the storage solution is also key. “Over time, your business needs will change and so too may your surveillance requirements. Planning for the future is a crucial aspect of running any business,” Axis said. “Ask yourself how many devices do I need now, and how many may I need in the future? How long will I need to keep my video recordings? What happens if I need to scale quicker than originally expected?”

Vendor Support According to Axis, the end user should prepare for the scenario where the NVR goes out of commission. “Here are some other things you’ll want to keep in mind. Does the NVR include a warranty? If so, how many years is the warranty for, and what does it cover? How quickly can a technical support specialist help you fix the problem, and how can you easily contact this person?,” Axis said, adding redundancy and selecting quality manufacturers are also important in safeguarding storage. Cost Finally, there’s the cost factor. “Keep in mind that you get what you pay for. While one solution may cost less, it may be less reliable and secure than a more expensive option,” Axis said.

The data generated by cameras again calls for effective storage solutions. “Retailers are now using real-time customer insights to look past loss prevention and combine the intelligence gathered from analytics to monitor shopper behavior, integrate intelligence with their POS systems, and even push targeted digital signage content to certain customer demographics,” the white paper said. “This analytic integration into other key retail use cases is leading to an accumulation of data, and having intelligent storage will help integrate data from multiple sources into one comprehensive infrastructure.”

Against this backdrop, systems integrators (SI) who have the necessary knowledge in storage play a crucial role in meeting the users’ needs. “Every storage vendor touts expertise in video storage capability, but when in scale and performance centric environments all storage is not equal — the challenge for customers is to find a professional SI who understands how to map the correct storage solution to each customers’ individual needs,” said Darren Taylor, Managing Director at PMT Security Systems. In large-scale projects, for example, there are several factors that can impact the effectiveness of storage. The network infrastructure must be set up properly, supported with carefully designed access, convergence and core layers as well as high-grade cabling, to ensure the reliability of transmission from edge devices to storage. The next issue to be looked at is the storage architecture — is a centrally managed storage system required, or is a distributed system called for? “Both architectures have pros and cons. Generally speaking, a distributed system is spread out across multiple sites within an end user organization, each with a set of equipment. As a result the user is inclined to purchase less expensive equipment to install at each site. But then again, the cost of labor may become more expensive as the user has to staff operators at each site. A centrally managed system, on the other hand, is centrally managed from a control room with more advanced, expensive equipment, but the cost of labor will be less down the road as you don’t need to staff operators at different sites,” said Jeffery Lee, GM of 3S, a solutions provider that also does large projects such as semiconductor foundries, subways and prisons.
