AMAZON LEADS SMART HOME PLAYERS BY NARROWING GAP Alexa, without a doubt, is the smart home market’s current bellwether. The question is how long it can keep its leader position. Rivals like Microsoft, Apple and Google are all strong players and own resources needed to drive innovation. While Amazon entered the market a couple of years ahead of its competitors, other tech giants are caching up fast.

o some, smart home is considered the next frontier of technological innovation. Today the nascent industry is dominated by Apple, Google, Amazon, etc., and each company has its own proposition on how smart devices should be controlled. For Apple, it is using the Home app via iOS devices, while for Amazon, it is using Alexa voice command via its smart speakers. For early adopters of smart home, some believe voice command is the fastest and most intuitive way to control smart devices. A user may switch the light on simply by clapping hands or saying the word “on.” Amazon is the first company to introduce smart speakers. Before Alexa hit the market, there had been little consensus on how home automation should work, or what wireless protocols (Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, etc.) should be adopted. Amazon has also made its API available to third-party developers. The open-arm policy has led to the creation of more than 10,000 skills, which are apps in the world of Amazon Alexa. This is why Alexa is currently enabled in far more applications than other voice assistants are. “Alexa is popular because it’s very user friendly, it can be applied in everyday life, and

people have not used Siri in such ways,” said Shawn Lin, senior product manager at EQL Technology Inc. EQL makes hubs that relay signals from Amazon’s smart speaker Echo to a variety of home appliances. As such, users can turn on air conditioner, TV and lighting, etc. through voice commands. The company’s solution integrates exclusively with Alexa, and Lin said EQL chose the Alexa platform because “it has existed the longest, is the most mature, and has the broadest applications.” Another strength of Alexa lies in its voice recognition ability. According to Lin, Amazon’s development team has fed Alexa with voices spoken by people with different accent to improve its ability to distinguish spoken words, and improvements are constantly being made.

RICHER EXPERIENCE BROUGHT BY THE ECHO SHOW Consumers in general gave positive feedback on using Amazon Echo and the smaller speaker Echo Dot. A larger number of the products

has been shipped, and the number is still climbing. Amazon has launched more devices, namely the Echo Look and the Echo Show, in April and May, respectively. While the original Echo speaker is like a robot with ears, the Echo look has both ears and eyes, thanks to the added camera. The visual allows the Echo Look to provide senior care, intrusion detection and distance education, among other services. “The launch of Echo Show signals the important role that Amazon now views of visual presentation. In many cases, the product aims to provide information that otherwise cannot be easily conveyed through sound,” said Brian Sun, Technical Marketing Manger in China of Ayla Networks, an IoT cloud platform provider that offers solutions compatible with Alexa, HomeKit and Google Home. With the Echo Show, numbers can be presented clearly via pie charts or other graphic representation. For instance, changes in temperature and humidity in the house can be shown visually in a graph on the Echo Show. It is true that the same can be done on the screen of a smartphone, tablet or smart watch. But using the Echo Show will be so much easier, compared with taking out a mobile phone to open the app, and to tap the right button to view the information. With the Echo Show, users can simply voice the command to have the graphs shown on the screen.

The introduction of the Echo Show enriches user experience, and Ayla Networks views the new product as a positive development for the Alexa ecosystem, Sun concluded.

SHORTCOMINGS OF ALEXA That is not to say Alexa has no demerits. Voice assistants have different ways of interacting with users. For Alexa, it is a straight “one question and one answer” interaction mode, said B.K. Liu, Manager of Product Management & Strategic Partners Division at Jazz Hipster Corp., which manufacturers smart speakers that work with Amazon Voice Service. At this stage, Alexa will only respond when being asked a question, and the question that users utter has to be framed in certain ways. In a shopping experience, for example, users have to start the process by saying their intent to buy something, before saying the exact product, and then, they need to tell Alexa the amount. Google Assistant, on the other hand, can engage with users through a more natural conversation. Different from Alexa, this allows users to place orders through a one-sentence command. “Google Home speaker gives users the sense of a having conversation with a real person,” Liu said, adding that Google appears to own more advanced artificial intelligence, thanks to the knowledge it has accumulated from its powerful search engine. The other drawback of Alexa is the range of supported languages. Although Alexa entered the market earlier, it is lagging behind in terms of the languages it can speak. The absence of a language means the absence of a localized service. Alexa is now available in English and Germany, with Japanese expected to get onboard later this year. Google, however, announced it will soon support up to six languages. Professional smart home installers may have different views of the Alexa system.

Sun Woo Yoon, marketing manager of South Korea-based smart home solution provider Commax, said, “Amazon has a device that can win, if I make products that work with these devices, I can get good profit.” In regards to the new Echo Show, Yoon said it is a good product, but nothing more than a tablet PC. To Yoon, the Echo Show is like a secretary equipped with artificial intelligence, which he thinks is not very different from an iPad with added capabilities.

In last month’s Google developer conference, the company announced an array of companies – including name brands like LG and GE – that will soon make products compatible with Google Assistant. Alexa may see its frontrunner position threatened as more device makers add Google Assistant compatibility. “The differences between Alexa and Google 10 mySMAhome.com 2017

Assistant are bound to narrow,” EQL Technology’s Lin forecast. While Amazon has the first-mover advantage, the world of technologies are constantly changing, and nothing stays the same for long in the consumer electronics sector. There have been tech firms that succeeded in dominating the market, only to lose it later. In the end, it’s about user experience, said Desmond Chan, Field Marketing Manager – APAC at Silicon Labs’ department of IoT Products. The semiconductor company makes systemon-chips to enable data transmission via zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth, etc. “The Alexa ecosystem has integrated many more devices, such as Phillips Hue, connecting them to the cloud,” Chan said, adding that Alexa is a comparatively more open system. Its cloud will do the computation, and it’s somehow different from Apple’s HomeKit system, Chan noted. They can even set rooms to light up at different times. They can also let the lights turn off gradually in the night, so they don’t have to worry whether any lights were left on. With a starter kit, users can screw the bulbs into existing light fittings and turn on wall light switches. TAIWANESE MANUFACTURERS WELL POSITIONED TO REALIZE SMART HOME AND IoT OPPORTUNITIES

The IoT is an opportunity for Taiwan because it is about integrating different ecosystems and different industries. The question is how to integrate solutions offered by gateway, platform, sensor, Bluetooth, ZigBee and app providers. Taiwan can be the source of technical expertise, while broader smart home applications can be realized overseas.

ince the notion of smart home first surfaced years ago, many businesses have dived into related development in the field, investing much resource and believing that smart home and the Internet of Things (IoT) will be the next big thing. However, the industry seemed to get off to a slow start, as market response has not been as warm as expected. Nevertheless, the IoT’s importance was never played down by the government, as countries around the globe, including Taiwan, have written smart home or IoT development into national development policies. After years of tepid growth, the industry might finally begin to take off, based on surveys conducted with Taiwanese exhibitors at SMAhome Expo 2017, the only trade show in Asia dedicated to the smart home industry. Howard Yeh, President of G-Light Technologies Co., said he has been in the industry for 10 years, and it is not until the last 2-3 years that the smart home industry started to garner momentum, because many “big shots” in the IoT industry, in raw material and system industries, for example, have stepped up. “I think it is undergoing rapid development,” Yeh said. G-Light has been an original design manufacturer working with large IoT companies based in the U.S. After seeing many mergers between service and IT companies in the U.S., Yeh believes the smart home market is gaining traction. There is also unmet demand. G-Light works with construction firms in Taiwan, and Yeh said many light-current systems in old apartments are in need of replacement. The company provides smart switches that can turn

on (and off) multiple lights for a “scene.” G-Light’s strength lies in combining electrical engineering expertise with lighting effect design. Home automation needs to create comfort while conserving energy, and this is what G-Light’s smart switches aim to accomplish. Its customers comprise of local distributors and foreign buyers.

STILL MUCH UNFULFILLED DEMAND Jack Lien, President & CEO of WFE Technology Corp., said he is “very optimistic” about smart home development in the future. WFE Technology Corp. is one of the main electronic lock providers in Taiwan, and about five years ago, the company started to install smart locks in new home projects. Its products are sold under the brand name of Waferlock, mostly in Taiwan.

The company works mostly on new home projects and is more confident about the potential in Asia. DIY products are more popular in western market due to local regulations.

TAIWAN MAY LEVERAGE ITS INFORMATION AND COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY

About three years ago smart home application turned more popular with the arrival low-power Bluetooth 4.0 and 4G, Lien said. Faster transmission is necessary to render user friendly experience, Lien said. “We decided to jump in (smart home) because 4G can provide more inclusive services.” There were hurdles of smart home implementation, including software and hardware issues and the high cost that are simply not acceptable to average consumers. However, the market became more mature in recent years, as the value, benefits and functionalities of IoT are now more relatable to everyone. “Consumers feel that smart home can bring real convenience, and perceive it not just a gimmick,” Lien noted. “Smart home implementation, especially in Taiwan, grew rapidly over the past two years. It is similar to 10-20 years ago when we pushed for electronic locks,” said Lien, who expects smart home adoption to grow as fast as electronic lock adoption in the early years. Lien says he personally believes smart home will be a norm in the future, largely because the new technologies’ feasibility and usefulness have outperformed the old ones.

Many local companies also believe Taiwan is well positioned to take advantage of the emerging IoT industry. Charles Yuan, Senior Manager of Connection Technology Systems Inc.’s (CTS) IoT Business Development Dept., said “Taiwanese companies are actually suited for the IoT industry, which ultimately is about providing services.” It requires collaboration between IT firms and professional service providers who possess the domain knowledge, in healthcare or security industries, for example. The know-how accumulated overtime is not something that traditional IT firms can copy, and their role is to help companies provide services better, faster and more effectively, Yuan said. IoT is an opportunity for Taiwan because it is about integrating different ecosystems, or different industries. The question is how to integrate services provided by gateway, platform, sensor, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and app companies. Taiwan can be the source of technical expertise, while broader applications may be realized overseas. CTS is a gateway provider that help platform clients – like cable operators and telecom companies – provide various smart home services, in security, healthcare and energy management applications, among others. For the past couple of years, the company has targeted Sweden and Norway markets where local governments have actively pushed IoT development. This year CTS is eying

Given its information and computer technology expertise, Taiwan is an important base for smart home development, Su stressed, adding that there are many innovative ideas here. Amroad provides a comprehensive video-based system that includes intercom and access control designed for residential communities. The company works mostly with home builders and 80-90 percent of its clients come from abroad, mostly from India, Vietnam and Thailand. With 12 years of experience in the industry, the company is looking to expand its international customer base. The company will focus on Southeast Asian countries first, given these countries’ similarity in lifestyle to Taiwan’s. Deals can actually be made in an exhibition like SMAhome Expo, Su said. This year’s show is better because there were more visitors from overseas. However, there was much preparation beforehand. Over the years the company has made much investment on products’ aesthetic and technical improvement.

There are more people who see value in smart home devices – including smart door locks, video door bells and networked cameras – than the number of people who are familiar with the products, indicating a robust opportunity for broader adoption and usage, says the research institute.

“More than one-fourth of households own at least one smart product, but only 12% own a smart home system,” said Tom Kerber, Director of IoT Strategy at Parks Associates. Smart Home: Quest for Compelling Use Cases from Parks Associates shows that nearly 70% of smart product owners own a device that is not connected to a smart home system and only 35% of smart product owners have the product integrated into a smart home system.

n the innovative field of Internet of Things (IoT), healthcare related applications will be most sought after in the consumer market, according to Taiwan-based IoT solution company Full Enterprise Corp., which forecast the demand will surge between the third and fourth quarter of 2017. Speaking about the IoT, most countries in the world have not fully grasped the smart concept. Awareness grew from like 1 percent last year to 3 percent this year, according to James Yih, General Manager of Full Enterprise Corp. For this reason, companies are advised to enter the IoT market or the smart home industry from a different vantage point. “I don’t talk about smart home, but smart life, which encompasses every aspects of life – food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, entertainment and health care,” Yih said in an interview at SMAhome Expo 2017. Smart home is not a necessity, but smart life is, especially senior home care, he said. Founded 33 years ago, Full Enterprise initially focused on shipping hardware accessories used in telecom, LAN, media and computer industries. But has lately shifted focus to IoT and smart solutions. The devices, which can check the wearer’s state of health and location, are embedded in the clothes or shoes. A SOS button is included in the device which senior citizens can use to get help in an emergency. As mobile phones might not be accessible all the time, the device provides one additional layer of protection, Yih said.

The government of Taiwan has been advocating IoT development, while in China, the government’s push is even more obvious, especially in the field of senior care. “The government must have clear rules, so as to encourage R&D investment, innovation and transformation by the private sector.” When the government provides direction and sets the right policies, many companies will join in this endeavor, Yih added. The IoT discussion has been around for 3-5 years. Humans have been seeking better life since the dawn of time, and ‘smart life’ is bound to be the new trend, Yih said. Many research institutes predicted the market will pick up in 2019-2020. For Full Enterprise, the demand could surge earlier, between the third and fourth quarter of 2017, Yih predicted.

any exhibitors at SMAHome Expo 2017 have expressed confidence in the prospect of the smart home industry. One of them is U.S.-based Dome, whose co-founder Felix Chan believes smart devices will be as universal as smartphones within 2-3 years. Dome sells sirens, door sensors, motion detectors, leak sensors, etc. A more popular product, named the Water Main Shut-Off, is a valve that connects to leak sensor as well as smartphone. It allows users to close the valve from their phone when leak is detected. Users can do this when they are in the office, instead of coming home to a scene of water pool. This product also features easy installation. It mounts on an existing water pipe and no complicated dissembling is required. Dome entered the smart home industry 3-4 years ago. “We work with Z-Wave, and utilizing this platform to enter the market,” Chan said, adding that the company’s product marketing is still at an early stage. Besides common devices like sensors and siren, Dome also offers a unique product called Mouser, a smart mousetrap that is the first of its kind in the market. Mice that enter the cage will be instantly electrocuted. The trap connects to a smartphone so that users will be notified whenever a mouse is trapped and users can go on-site to remove it. Mouse cages are usually placed in hard-to-reach locations, and Mouser saves users the hassle to constantly go check if any mice have been caught on-site. All the Dome products showcased at SMAHome Expo are made in China; however, the company is not ruling out working with partners from other countries in the future, “given reasonable prices and amiable cooperation relationship” Chan said. “We will not constrain production to one country,” he said, adding that manufacturing in Taiwan or Eastern Europe is also possible. As Dome is based in the U.S., the company’s target market has been North America mostly. But after nearly four years in the industry, Dome wants to explore opportunities in other markets. The reason it was exhibiting at SMAHome Expo is to test the waters in Asia, Chan said.

Compared with North America and Europe where people are more open to try new products, Asia has different lifestyles and more conservative attitude, which may be the reason for the region’s slower adoption of smart devices, Chan noted. He is still confident, however. “I believe smart home products will become more popular in 2-3 years, just like smartphones,” he said.

razil-based total smart home solution provider Flex Automation showcased its smart gateway and control panels at SMAhome Expo 2017 in Taipei, aiming to establish larger presence in the Asian market. SP Group, a provider of chipsets for voice activation and connectivity solution based on ULE for IoT , believes that in the future, smart home standards will be dominated not only by tech giants, but also telecom operators. While big names like Apple, Google and Amazon have all rolled out smart home platforms, such as HomeKit and Alexa, telecom operators also want a piece of the pie. Operators do have an edge in the field. They have a large number of subscribers that are used to purchase services from them, and therefore, expansion into the smart home business is a natural step. In addition, many subscribers already own a potential IoT hub, as more than 50 million home gateways are already installed worldwide with the DECT chipset embedded inside. Operators can simply upgrade the software running on the DECT chipset to turn gateways into home control centers. Regarding DSP Group’s target market, while Western countries have a larger smart home adopter population, the company is not ruling out the Asian market including Taiwan. In fact, DSP Group is trying to connect with local operators to explore opportunities to implement home automation. DSP Group has a huge presence in the DECT phone & gateway markets and the VoIP market. It also has a growing presence in the IoT and voice activation sectors. The company has been working closely with Taiwanese companies across all product segments. Tali Chen, DSP Group’s CVP of Corporate Development, said Taiwanese original design manufacturers have strong innovation and technical capabilities, allowing DSP Group to leverage its technology and facilitate broader implementation. Fast response and turnaround from the manufacturers, according to Chen, is another advantage of working with Taiwanese partners. “Together we can move really fast.” DSP Group wants to find more partners and it is a main reason for coming to SMAHome Expo 2017, Chen said.

The show is very focused and relevant. “It’s not very big, but it’s good in our perspective, because then we are not talking to irrelevant visitors,” Chen said, adding that “We truly believe we’ll find long-term partners here.” In regards to the prospect of smart home, Chen remains upbeat. “From my perspective, I see a lot of opportunities in the smart home market. All the ones exhibiting here, including me, talk about very big numbers, and I think there is a lot of potential.” Chen pointed out, however, that there are still uncertainties, like who will be the right partner to work with and there are also many standards. It not very clear if there will be one standard, multiple standards, or interoperability between different standards, she said However, all these questions will be answered in the near term, Chen said. The reason is that consumers are starting to see the benefit of smart home and adoption is growing at a rapid pace. For example, there has been a huge increase in the adoption of Amazon Echo. “People really want to adopt such solutions,” Chen noted.

here are many opportunities for Taiwan in the emerging field of home automation since the country already possesses computer and networking expertise, which are critical in smart home implementation, said Ralf Kilguss, Dialog Semiconductor’s Sales Country Manager based in Taiwan. Kilguss made the comment in an interview at SMAhome Expo 2017, a smart home exhibition organized by Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media. Smart home is not just about simple things like automate light switching, Kilguss said. There are also medical and senior care applications, and many Taiwanese companies have begun the endeavor, making devices that track blood pressure and blood sugar levels, for example, Kilguss said. The notion of Internet of Things (IoT) and home automation were not commonly known in Taiwan, due to the lack of wellknown companies investing heavily in the industry. This is starting to change, however, in the last 2-3 years, Kilguss pointed out, noting that there are even “companies that we never heard of” starting to study home automation. Even big players like Quanta Computer and Foxconn have established R&D centers that focus on home automation study. Asked what has fueled the change, Kilguss said industry standards play a big part. “There was home automation since I was little, but without a common standard, every company just establishes their own.” But with standards like Apple HomeKit, Thread and those of other alliances, home automation can be enabled relatively faster, he said. Given Taiwan’s strength in computer knowhow and its close tie to smart home applications, Kilguss believes home automation presents a great opportunity for Taiwanese businesses. SHANGHAI SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY 2017 OBTAINS POSITIVE INDUSTRY RESPONSE FROM INDUSTRY

oining forces with the China Smart Home Industry Alliance (CSHIA), one of China’s leading smart home industry organisations, Shanghai Smart Home Technology (SSHT) 2017 will return to the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, September 5-7. With only two months to go, already 80% of the exhibition space for the upcoming show has been booked, representing a 50% increase over the same time last year, according to the event organizer. This year’s edition will once again run concurrently with Shanghai Intelligent Building Technology (SIBT) to present the latest smart home technologies. The shows are expected to attract more than 250 companies and 28,000 visitors for trade in a record-breaking exhibition space of 18,000 sqm, which is a 12.5% increase over the previous edition. “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the industry for their support to SSHT,” Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Deputy General Manager Ms Lucia Wong commented on the industry’s positive response. The show is positioned as a comprehensive technology platform that stresses three core values, with the first being ‘technology integration.’ SSHT showcases the integration of internet application, communication and automation control technologies through an array of product exhibitions and event programmes. The second is ‘cross-sector collaboration.’ SSHT aims to facilitate industry convergence and help traditional businesses to discover fruitful opportunities in the smart home sector.
