ASL Fly Med

Nieuw binnen de ASL Group zijn de medische repatriëringsvluchten waarvoor we in 2021 investeerden in twee Bombardier Learjets 45. Hiermee bieden we binnen en buiten Europa medische urgentievluchten aan zowel privépersonen als verzekeringsmaatschappijen aan. Zo hebben we reeds enkele repatriëringen uitgevoerd van oorlogsslachtoffers uit Oekraïne en dit in samenwerking met het Duitse Medcare Professional, die hiervoor een crowdfunding opgezet heeft.

Fly Executive vs. 45 private jets

The biweekly flights to the Austrian ski resorts last winter were a real hit! The same goes for the flights to the most renowned real estate fair in the world: MIPIM in Cannes. In June, we will be continuing this momentum with trips to Art Basel and Ibiza (from 29 June). For the latter destination, you can also opt for a package including hotel. We are collaborating with the famous Amàre Beach Hotel (from € 1,695 including flight). You can also find our winter programme on www.flyexecutive.be. In addition to the Fly Executive programme, you can of course also contact us for a customised private flight. Later in this magazine you can discover the 45 private jets from which you can choose. ASL Fly Med

A new addition within the ASL Group are the medical repatriation flights for which we invested in two Bombardier Learjets 45 in 2021. With these jets, we offer emergency medical flights within and outside Europe to both private persons and insurance companies. For instance, we have already carried out several repatriations of war victims from Ukraine in cooperation with the German company Medcare Professional, which has launched a crowdfunding campaign for this purpose.

Nieuwbouw in Luik

Ondertussen is ook ons nieuwe gebouw in Luik volledig ‘up and running’, de klanten zijn unaniem lovend over de vlotte bereikbaarheid, de professionele afhandeling bij vertrek en aankomst en het stijlvolle ontwerp van het gebouw. Bovendien kunnen er ook events plaatsvinden op de 2e etage met een prachtig uitzicht op de luchthaven. Ook ASL Academy – onze vliegschool voor piloten – nam ondertussen zijn intrek in de nieuwe vestiging in Luik. Om onze duurzaamheidsambities te onderstrepen zullen de elektrische vliegtuigen, waar de aspirant-piloten gebruik van maken, opgeladen worden met groene stroom van de 400 zonnepanelen, die binnen enige tijd op het dak van de hangar geïnstalleerd zullen worden.

Mooiste privéjet van de Benelux

Verder kan ik u nu reeds verklappen dat we in december de mooiste en grootste privéjet in de Benelux mogen verwelkomen in onze vloot: de Bombardier Global 6500 Heavy Jet, die beschikt over een super-de-luxe cabine voor 13 passagiers en geschikt is voor intercontinentale lange-afstandsvluchten. Naast al deze uitdagingen kijk ik momenteel vooral uit naar een mooie zomer zonder corona en hopelijk een snelle beëindiging van het conflict in Oekraïne. Ik wens jullie allemaal een fantastisch vervolg van 2022 en veel leesplezier!

New building in Liège

Furthermore, I can already reveal that in December we will be welcoming the most beautiful and largest private jet in the Benelux to our fleet: the Bombardier Global 6500 Heavy Jet, which features a super deluxe cabin for 14 passengers and is suitable for intercontinental long-haul flights. Besides all these challenges, I am currently looking forward to a beautiful summer without corona pandemic and hopefully a quick ending of the conflict in Ukraine. Eind 2021 werd de ASL vloot uitgebreid met twee Pipistrel Velis Electro elektrische vliegtuigen (OO-GRN en OO-ELC). ASL Group is momenteel de enige Belgische luchtvaartgroep die elektrische toestellen inzet. “We gebruiken ze in onze ASL Academy voor de opleiding van piloten. De vliegtuigen hebben een prijskaartje van ongeveer 200.000 euro en beschikken over één uur autonomie met een opgeladen batterij. Dat is voldoende voor een circuittraining om een aantal basisvliegmanoeuvres onder de knie te krijgen,” vertelt piloot Jan Pauwels, die de ASL Academy leidt. Hij vertelt waarom de toestellen zo belangrijk zijn voor de ASL Group en hoe hij kijkt naar de toekomst van de luchtvaartindustrie.

At the end of 2021, the ASL fleet was expanded with two Pipistrel Velis Electro electric aircraft (OO-GRN and OO-ELC). ASL Group is currently the only Belgian aviation group that deploys electric aircraft. "We use them in our ASL Academy for pilot training. The aircraft cost around 200,000 euros and have an autonomy of one hour with a charged battery, which is sufficient for a circuit training to master a number of basic flight manoeuvres," says pilot Jan Pauwels, who runs the ASL Academy. He explains why the aircraft are so important for the ASL Group and how he sees the future of the aviation industry.

Kan je ons iets meer vertellen over de twee elektrische vliegtuigen die ASL Group in gebruik nam enkele maanden geleden?

“De Pipistrel Velis Electro is een Sloveens elektrisch éénmotorig hoogdekker lesvliegtuig. Het trainingstoestel, dat volledig gemaakt is van composietmateriaal, bevat twee zitplaatsen en is EASA CS-LSA electric type certified. We zijn de eerste Belgische groep die elektrische toestellen inzet bij onze opleidingen. We vinden het ontzettend belangrijk dat nieuwe piloten leren vliegen met dit type toestel.”

Could you tell us something more about the two electric aircraft that ASL Group started using a few months ago?

"The Pipistrel Velis Electro is a Slovenian electric singleengine high-wing training aircraft. The training aircraft, which is entirely made of composite material, features two seats and is EASA CS-LSA electric type certified. We are the first Belgian group to deploy electric aircraft in our training courses. We believe it is extremely important that new pilots learn how to fly with this type of aircraft."

Waarom vinden jullie dit zo belangrijk?

“Zoals veel andere luchtvaartmaatschappijen wil ASL Group meewerken aan een duurzame toekomst. We zijn ons ervan bewust dat vliegen niet klimaatneutraal is en het nooit zal zijn. CO2-compensatie is een belangrijk onderdeel van de klimaatverandering, maar het is niet dé oplossing. Daarom ondernemen we meer acties om de ecologische voetafdruk van onze luchtvaartgroep te verkleinen. Hieruit ontstond enkele jaren geleden het 'RISE'-project. Dit staat voor ‘Responsible Initiatives for a Sustainable Environment’ en het omvat een aantal concrete maatregelen. Zo wordt er minder plastic gebruikt aan boord van onze toestellen en worden de afvalstromen beter gescheiden. We investeren in duurzame producten aan boord, bijvoorbeeld eten en drinken en verzorgingsproducten. We hebben ook een aantal brandstofbesparende maatregelen tijdens de vluchten geïntroduceerd, bijvoorbeeld taxiën met één motor of efficiëntere vliegroutes. Vliegen met elektrische toestellen is een andere, cruciale stap in de verduurzaming van de luchtvaart.

Hoe zie je de toekomst van de luchtvaart? Vliegen alle luchtvaartmaatschappijen op lange termijn volledig elektrisch?

“Ik zie elektrisch vliegen met een batterij als een tussenfase. Gaandeweg zullen we evolueren van jets die aangedreven worden door fossiele brandstoffen naar duurzaam opgewekte e-fuels. Momenteel wordt er veel onderzoek gedaan naar het gebruik van waterstof in plaats van traditionele kerosine om passagiersvliegtuigen aan te drijven. Een van de conclusies luidt dat in 2050 bijna veertig procent van alle vluchten tot een afstand van 3.400 kilometer op waterstof uitgevoerd zullen kunnen worden. Er zijn echter uitdagingen, zoals de kostprijs en verdere opschaling. Deze overschakeling zal dan ook geleidelijk gebeuren. Of het nu op batterijen vliegen is, of op lange termijn, hopelijk met behulp van waterstof: er wordt sowieso intensief gewerkt aan een opvolger voor de kerosinemotor. En dat is hoe dan ook een zeer positieve, hoopgevende ontwikkeling.”

Why do you believe this is so important?

"Like many other airlines, ASL Group wants to contribute to a sustainable future. We realise that flying is not climate neutral and never will be. CO2 compensation is an important part of climate change, but it is not the solution. That is why we are increasing our efforts to reduce the ecological footprint of our airline group. This resulted in the 'RISE' project a few years ago. RISE stands for 'Responsible Initiatives for a Sustainable Environment' and involves a number of concrete measures. For example, less plastic is used on board and waste flows are better sorted. We are investing in sustainable products on board, such as food and beverages and personal care products. We have also introduced a number of fuelsaving measures during flights, such as single-engine taxiing or more efficient flight paths. Flying with electric aircraft is another crucial step in making aviation more sustainable.

How do you see the future of aviation? Will all airlines fly fully electric in the long term?

“I consider electric flying with a battery to be an intermediate phase. Gradually we will evolve from jets powered by fossil fuels to sustainably generated e-fuels. A lot of research is currently being conducted on the use of hydrogen instead of traditional kerosene to power passenger aircraft. One of the conclusions is that by 2050, almost 40% of all flights up to distances of 3,400 kilometres will be powered by hydrogen. However, this will entail challenges, such as cost price and further up-scaling. Therefore, the transition will be gradual. Whether it concerns flying on batteries, or in the long term, hopefully with the help of hydrogen: in any case, intensive efforts are being made to find a successor to the kerosene engine. And in any case, that is a very positive, encouraging development."

Adembenemende tuinen

Al sinds de oprichting van de stad in de 11e eeuw, ontstond in Marrakesh een traditie van prestigieuze tuinarchitectuur. Met meer dan 10 hectare groenaanleg, kan je spreken van een echte ‘tuinstad’. Langsheen het hart van de Medina worden de stadsmuren gekleurd door geurende fruitbomen. Ook in de stad zelf, zijn er verschillende botanische en historische tuinen die tot de oudste van het land behoren. De tuin van Menara bevat een spectaculair bassin, dat de omliggende tuin volledig voorziet van water. Het ingenieuze systeem van ondergrondse drainage, genaamd ‘khettara’, was een techniek van de oude Berbers, en is ook te zien in de Jardin Secret, in de oude binnenstad. Op deze plek is te zien hoe water een teken was van rijkdom en prestige. Komend van het Atlasgebergte, wordt het naar de stad geleid, en voorziet water aan de keuken, de hammam en de fonteinen van de tuin. Als verblijfplaats van verschillende historische politici, is deze tuin een indrukwekkend monument waar de tuinkunst gecombineerd is met architectuur.

Stunning gardens

Ever since the city was founded in the 11th century, Marrakesh has developed a tradition of prestigious garden architecture. Also in the city itself, there is a variety of botanical and historical gardens, some of which are among the oldest in the country. The Menara garden features a spectacular basin, which completely supplies the surrounding garden with water. The ingenious system of underground drainage called 'khettara' was a technique of the ancient Berbers and can also be admired in the Jardin Secret, in the old town. Here you can discover how water was a sign of wealth and prestige. Flowing from the Atlas mountains, it reaches the city and supplies water to the kitchen, the hammam and the fountains of the garden. Home to several historical politicians, this garden represents an impressive monument where the art of gardening is combined with architecture.

Onvergetelijke musea

Naast de tuinen en historische monumenten, kan je in Marrakesh ook uren rondwandelen in de musea, die elk hun eigen gevarieerde collecties tonen. Besides the gardens and historical monuments, in Marrakech you can also wander around for hours in the museums, each of which displays its own varied collections. Nevera… of bijna 2000 pk

De laatste creatie van Rimac is de Nevera, een naam die verwijst naar een stormwind die vaak over het Kroatische deel van de Middellandse Zee raast en dat is niet zonder reden. Nevara... or almost 2000hp

Rimac's latest creation is the Nevera, a name that refers to a storm wind that often rages over the Croatian part of the Mediterranean, and with good reason. The two-seater hypercar is capable of delivering 1914 hp, or four times the performance of a Porsche 911. The other figures, too, are almost unimaginable with a torque of 2360 Nm or an acceleration from zero to one hundred kilometres per hour in just under two seconds. The Nevera's top speed is 412 km/h. The car features a carbon fibre monocoque chassis with crash structures at the front and rear. The body panels are also made of the same material, which results in a low weight.

Very recently, the supercar worth two million euros also passed the obligatory European crash tests and that means that the production of the good 150 models can actually start.

Zeer recent onderging de superwagen van twee miljoen euro ook de verplichte Europese crashtests en dat betekent dat de productie van de goed 150 exemplaren ook werkelijk van start kan gaan.

De Nevera puurt al zijn vermogen overigens niet uit één, maar uit maar liefst vier elektromotoren, één per wiel eigenlijk, en die elektromotoren krijgen hun vermogen van een batterijgeheel dat goed is voor 120 kWh. De wagen zou een rijbereik van niet minder dan 550 kilometer hebben, al zal dat zeker niet in zijn meest sportieve modus zijn. Wie het erg zuinig doet, zou zelfs 647 kilometer ver raken. Net zoals bij andere exclusieve elektrische modellen kan de batterij tot 80% van zijn capaciteit laden in minder dan een half uur. Overigens is deze Nevera gebouwd op dezelfde basis als de Pininfarina Battista, een Italiaanse elektrische supercar die ook bijna 2000 pk uit zijn elektromotoren puurt.

De Nevera is overigens niet de eerste wagen van Rimac, want eerder liet het Kroatische merk de wereld met de ‘Concept One’ kennismaken, uiteraard ook een elektrische sportwagen, goed voor 1300 pk. Echter meer dan acht exemplaren van deze auto werden er niet gebouwd. De Concept S was een update van deze bolide, met goed 1400 pk en wat volgde was de Nevera.

Sinds kort is D'Ieteren invoerder van Rimac in België & Luxemburg.

The Nevera obtains all its power not from one but from no fewer than four electric motors, one per wheel in fact, and these electric motors are powered by a battery pack supplying 120 kWh. The car is said to have a driving range of no less than 550 kilometres, but that will most certainly not be in its most sporty mode. For those who are very economical, the range would even be 647 kilometres. As with other exclusive electric models, the battery can be charged to 80% of its capacity in less than half an hour. Moreover, this Nevera is built on the same basis as the Pininfarina Battista, an Italian electric supercar that also generates almost 2,000 hp from its electric motors.

Moreaover, the Nevera is not Rimac's first car. The Croatian brand had previously introduced its Concept One to the world, which was of course also an electric sports car producing 1300 hp. However, only eight examples of this car were built. The Concept S was an update of this car, capable of delivering 1400 hp, and what followed was the Nevera.

One of the most challenging landing strips in the world

What makes Courchevel airport so extraordinary?

"The airport is located at an altitude of 2,000 metres. It has a remarkably short runway of only 525 metres. For comparison: an average runway is about 2 kilometres long, so that gives an idea of the level of difficulty... In addition, the runway has a slope of 18.5%, which means that no go-arounds are possible. Because of the surrounding mountains, cliffs and hills landing is not easy. You can only start from one side and land from the other side. That is why Courchevel is considered to be one of the most challenging airports in the world. Only pilots who have undergone special training and have a qualification for the Courchevel site are allowed to land and take off here."

Kan je iets meer vertellen over die speciale training?

“Tijdens deze training worden wij, piloten, opgeleid om de omliggende bergen en valleien goed te leren kennen in een bepaald skigebied. We leren ook omgaan met het weer in de bergen, dat zeer onvoorspelbaar kan zijn. De piste moet bijvoorbeeld volledig sneeuwvrij zijn om te kunnen landen. Als het ’s nachts zwaar gesneeuwd heeft en we willen ’s morgens vroeg landen, lukt dit helaas niet altijd. In dat geval kunnen we steeds landen op een luchthaven in de buurt zoals Chambéry, Annecy of Albertville. Dit gebeurt altijd in nauw overleg met de klant, want hierdoor verliezen ze reistijd. Onze voornaamste zorg is dat ze veilig en in alle comfort aankomen op hun bestemming en zo snel mogelijk van hun welverdiende vakantie kunnen genieten.”

Could you tell us a little more about this special training?

“During this training, we, the pilots, are trained to thoroughly familiarise ourselves with the surrounding mountains and valleys in a particular ski area. We also learn to deal with the weather in the mountains, which can be very unpredictable. For example, the slope must be completely free of snow in order to be able to land. If it has snowed heavily at night and we want to land early in the morning, this is unfortunately not always possible. In that case we can still land at a nearby airport such as Chambéry, Annecy or Albertville. This always happens in close consultation with the client, as they will lose travel time. Our main concern is that they arrive at their destination safe and sound and can enjoy their welldeserved holiday as quickly as possible."

SHINING AMONG THE MASTERS IN UFFIZI

Firenze – Van een mijlpaal gesproken. Het wereldberoemde Uffizi-museum in Firenze opende dit jaar het exposeizoen met de tentoonstelling ‘Seduzione' van Koen Vanmechelen. Verspreid tussen de klassieke meesterwerken waren dertig werken te zien van de Belgische kunstenaar. Een unieke dialoog tussen hem en de allergrootsten. Vanmechelen vertelt ons hoe deze unieke expo tot stand kwam.

Kruisbestuiving

Nooit eerder werd een Belgische kunstenaar uitgenodigd in Uffizi om er zijn werk op deze manier tentoon te stellen. Voor Koen Vanmechelen was het dan ook een unieke kans om als hedendaagse kunstenaar in dialoog te gaan met historische grootmeesters zoals Caravaggio, Da Vinci en Michelangelo. Hoe dat tot stand kwam, was door een toevallige ontmoeting met Uffizi-directeur Eike Schmidt in Murano, in Venetië. Koen Vanmechelen vertelt: "Tijdens de coronaperiode vielen onze verre reizen weg, en kreeg ik de kans om meer tijd door te brengen in het glasatelier in Murano, waar ik al meer dan 30 jaar mee samenwerk. Op een namiddag kwam Eike Schmidt langs in het atelier, die meteen de link zag tussen mijn werk en de historische werken van het Uffizi museum. Schmidt zag een link tussen het proces van het kruisen dat al jaren mijn oeuvre kenmerkt, en de hybriden die ontstonden uit de wisselwerking tussen de historische denkwijze en mijn hedendaagse visie."

Florence - Talk about a milestone. The world-famous Uffizi Museum in Florence opened the exhibition season this year with the 'Seduzione' exhibition by Koen Vanmechelen. Thirty works by the Belgian artist were displayed among the traditional masterpieces. A unique dialogue between him and the very greatest. Vanmechelen explains how this unique exhibition was born.

Cross-pollination

Never before has a Belgian artist been invited to the Uffizi gallery to exhibit his work in this way. For Koen Vanmechelen it was therefore a unique opportunity as a contemporary artist to enter into dialogue with historical masters such as Caravaggio, Da Vinci and Michelangelo. This came about through a chance encounter with Eike Schmidt, the director of the Uffizi gallery in Murano, in Venice. Koen Vanmechelen explains: "During Corona, our long distance travels were cancelled and I had the opportunity to spend more time in the glass workshop in Murano, with which I have been working for more than 30 years. One afternoon Eike Schmidt visited the workshop and immediately noticed the link between my work and the historical works of the Uffizi museum. Schmidt saw a link between the process of crossing that has characterised my oeuvre for years, and the hybrids that arose from the interaction between the historical way of thinking and my contemporary vision."

De verleidende ontdekkingstocht

Verspreid tussen de meesterwerken, word je als bezoeker verleid door een legioen van 30 fantastische wezens. Al wandelend voorbij de installaties, voel je de nieuwsgierigheid om de achterliggende boodschap te weten te komen. "De werken zijn gericht op onderwerpen die al altijd de menselijke verbeelding hebben gevoed: leven-dood, mens-goddelijk, aards-spiritueel, natuurlijkkunstmatig. In dialoog met de werken in het museum, vormen ze een suggestieve en desoriënterende strijd rond het idee van 'verleiding'. Ze zijn een lofzang over de kracht van het leven die vaak monsterlijk oogt," aldus Vanmechelen. Hij vertrekt vanuit de wetenschap dat alle levende wezens onderling verbonden zijn. Een idee dat doet denken aan de Italiaanse Renaissance. Kunst, gemaakt voor de toekomst, is een manier om nieuwe verhalen te maken voor, en te projecteren op de wereld. Volgens Vanmechelen is kunst altijd het bindweefsel van het menselijk bestaan geweest. "Het verheldert onze perspectieven en werkt verbindend."

The seductive exploration

Spread among the masterpieces, the visitor is seduced by a legion of 30 fantastic creatures. As you walk past the installations, you feel the curiosity to know the underlying message. The works focus on subjects that have always fuelled the human imagination: life-death, humangodly, earthly-spiritual, natural-artificial. In dialogue with the works in the museum, they form a suggestive and disorienting struggle around the concept of 'seduction'. They are an ode to the power of life, which often looks monstrous,' says Vanmechelen. He is inspired by the knowledge that all living beings are interconnected. An idea that reminds of the Italian Renaissance. Art, made for the future, is a way to make new stories for, and project them onto, the world. According to Vanmechelen, art has always been the connective tissue of human existence. It clarifies our perspectives and has a binding effect.’

Een greep uit de expo

In het midden van de beroemde Niobiden-kamer, staat de installatie ‘Domestic Violence’: het werk met de levensgrote tijger op een tapijt van kippenveren. De tijger in rode marmer is omringd door scherpe zwaarden, waarvan er één haar rug doorboort. Het katachtige dier, dat symbool staat voor de natuur, lijkt zich (nog) niet bewust te zijn van de gevaarlijke zwaarden. Maar hoe lang zal dit kunnen blijven duren? De installatie is een metafoor van hoe de mens de natuur misbruikt, en al het mooie van de planeet wil omvormen naar een product.

Links en rechts van de Medusa van Caravaggio, springen de twee hybride Medusa’s van Vanmechelen in het oog. Hun hoofden, gemaakt van marmer en glas, krioelen van slangen en monsterlijke kippen met scherpe, wijdgesperde kaken. Ze versterken de gruwel van het slangenhaar en het vervormde gezicht dat te zien is in Caravaggio’s meesterwerk. Het gif van Medusa en haar slangen dat zowel symbool staat voor bedreiging als voor ‘leven geven’, kan je vergelijken met de eieren van kippen. Enerzijds geven ze leven door hun gebruik als basis voor medicijnen en vaccinaties in de moderne geneeskunde. Anderzijds heeft de overdaad van het broeden van gevogelte al verschillende ziektes bij de mens gebracht. Zo is de installatie van de Medusa een metafoor voor het vermogen om zowel te doden als nieuw leven te geven.

A selection from the exhibition

In the middle of the famous Niobiden room, stands the ‘Domestic Violence’ installation; the work with the lifesized tiger on a carpet made of chicken feathers. The red marble tiger is surrounded by sharp swords, one of which pierces her back. The cat-like animal, which symbolises nature, seems to be unaware of the dangerous swords (yet). But how long will this last? The installation is a metaphor of how humankind abuses nature and wants to transform all the beauty of the planet into a product.

On the left and right of Caravaggio's Medusa, Vanmechelen's two hybrid Medusas catch the eye. Their heads, made of marble and glass, are swarming with snakes and monstrous chickens with sharp, widemouthed jaws. They reinforce the horror of the snake's hair and distorted face seen in Caravaggio's masterpiece. The poison of Medusa and her snakes, which symbolises both threat and 'giving life', can be compared to chicken eggs. On the one hand, they give life through their use as the basis for medicines and vaccinations in modern medicine. On the other hand, the excesses of poultry breeding have already caused several diseases in humans. In this way, the installation of the Medusa is a metaphor for the ability to both kill and give new life.

In de gangen van de tweede verdieping plaatst Vanmechelen sculpturen van zijn Temptation-serie tussen de klassieke beeldhouwwerken: witte Statuario-marmeren bustes van keizers, filosofen, krijgers, helden en goden. Hun hoofden zijn bedekt met glazen eierschalen van waaruit hybride wezens ontspringen. "Ik wil hiermee de bezoeker uitnodigen om te ontsnappen aan de grenzen van het rationeel denken."

Verderop ontdekt de bezoeker een intrigerende opstelling van ‘Bambino con Gallo’ met de ‘Cosmopolitan Fossil’ van Vanmechelen. Bambino con Gallo is een beeld van de 19e-eeuwse Florentijnse kunstenaar Adriano Cecioni. Normaal is dit werk te zien in de Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Palazzo Pitti, maar voor deze gelegenheid werd het tijdelijk overgebracht naar Uffizi. Vanmechelen tovert de ongevaarlijke vogel in het originele beeld van Cecioni om tot een enorme leguaan in marmer en glas. Het kind dat hem vasthoudt, kan hem nauwelijks onder controle houden. Cosmopolitan Fossil verwijst naar de vergeefse poging van de mensheid om de kracht van de natuur te beheersen en moedigt aan om liefdevoller om te gaan met ons ecosysteem.

In the hallways of the second floor, Vanmechelen places sculptures from his Temptation series among the classical sculptures; white Statuario marble busts of emperors, philosophers, warriors, heroes and gods. Their heads are covered with glass eggshells from which hybrid creatures emerge. I want to invite the visitor to escape from the limits of rational thinking.

Further on, the visitor discovers an intriguing display of 'Bambino con Gallo' with the 'Cosmopolitan Fossil' by Vanmechelen. Bambino con Gallo is a sculpture by the 19th-century Florentine artist Adriano Cecioni. Normally, this work is on display in the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Palazzo Pitti, but for this occasion it was temporarily relocated to Uffizi. Vanmechelen transforms the harmless bird in Cecioni's original sculpture into an enormous iguana made of marble and glass. The child who is holding it can barely keep it under control. Cosmopolitan Fossil refers to mankind's futile attempt to control the power of nature and encourages us to be more loving towards our ecosystem.

Ook het beeld van de kunstenaar zelf duikt op in de tentoonstelling: het zelfportret ‘Ubuntu’, tentoongesteld in de zelfportrettenkamer. In de gedaante van een sjamaan observeert hij de bezoeker door een glazen masker. Het transparante van het masker symboliseert hoe Vanmechelen zijn ziel blootlegt. Vanmechelen legt uit: "Ubuntu betekent in het Zuid-Afrikaanse Bantoe ‘Ik ben, omdat wij zijn.’ Het is een uitnodiging om het principe van deze Zuid-Afrikaanse filosofie te omarmen en een herinnering aan het feit dat wij allemaal deel uitmaken van een gemeenschap van mens, dier en natuur. Zowel op biologisch als op sociaal vlak, kunnen wij niet bestaan zonder de anderen." Na de tentoonstelling kreeg het werk een permanente plaats in de Uffizi-collectie.

Een realistatie op wereldniveau

Een spraakmakende tentoonstelling als deze realiseer je niet alleen. Steun is nodig, als je weet dat elk van de 30 tentoongestelde werken voor een aanzienlijk bedrag moest verzekerd worden. Partners van over de hele wereld werkten mee om dit te ondersteunen; afkomstig uit het buitenland, maar ook uit het Belgische Limburg, de streek waar Vanmechelen woont, en door velen wordt

Both biologically and socially, we cannot exist without the others. After the exhibition, the work got a permanent place in the Uffizi collection.

A realisation at world level

A sensational exhibition like this is not something you achieve on your own. Support is needed, when you realise that each of the 30 exhibited works had to be insured for a considerable sum. Partners from all over the world collaborated to support this; from abroad, but also from Belgian Limburg, the region where Vanmechelen lives and is appreciated by many. I think it is important to feel connected to the people locally and to be appreciated. The museum welcomes more than five million visitors

The youngest astronaut in history

Na jaren van voorbereiding was het eindelijk zover op 20 juli 2021: Blue Origin, het ruimtevaartbedrijf van Amazon-oprichter en rijkste mens ter wereld Jeff Bezos, bracht vier mensen in de ruimte. Behalve Bezos zelf namen ook zijn broer Mark en de 82-jarige Mary ‘Wally’ Funk, de oudste astronaut ooit, plaats aan boord van het ruimtevaarttuig New Shepard voor de eerste bemande vlucht. Voor wie het vierde stoeltje bestemd was, bleef lang een geheim. Uiteindelijk bleek het naar een Nederlander te gaan: de 18-jarige Oliver Daemen. Hij ging daarmee de geschiedenisboeken in als de jongste astronaut ooit. “Ze waren allemaal heel cool en downto-earth,” vertelt hij over zijn toch wel bijzondere reisgezelschap. “Net voor ik aan boord ging, vertelde ik aan Jeff dat ik nog nooit iets bij Amazon had gekocht. Hij reageerde verrast.”

Hoe ben je in dit avontuur beland, Oliver?

“Het vierde stoeltje aan boord van New Shepard werd per opbod verkocht, ten voordele van verschillende goede doelen. Mijn vader (vastgoedontwikkelaar Joes Daemen, nvdr) waagde zich in de biedingsstrijd, samen met zo’n 7.600 andere gegadigden uit 159 landen. Maar de bedragen swingden al snel de pan uit, waardoor hij noodgedwongen moest afhaken. Uiteindelijk bedroeg het winnende bod maar liefst 23 miljoen euro. De winnende bieder, Justin Long, kon echter geen tijd vrijmaken voor de vlucht en zal de volgende keer meevliegen. Daarop besloot Blue Origin om mij het stoeltje te gunnen zodat niet alleen de oudste astronaut ooit – Wally Funk –maar ook de jongste mee de ruimte in zou gaan.”

After years of preparation, the time had finally arrived on 20 July 2021: Blue Origin, the space company of Amazon founder and richest man in the world, Jeff Bezos, took four people into space. Besides Bezos himself, his brother Mark and 82-year-old Mary 'Wally' Funk, the oldest astronaut ever, also boarded the spacecraft New Shepard for the first manned flight. For whom the fourth seat was destined, remained a secret for a long time. In the end, it turned out to be a Dutchman: 18-yearold Oliver Daemen. He went down in history as the youngest astronaut in history. "They were all very cool and down-to-earth," he says of his very special travelling companions. "Just before boarding, I told Jeff that I had never bought anything on Amazon before. He reacted surprised."

How did you end up in this adventure, Oliver?

"The fourth seat aboard the New Shepard was sold by auction for the benefit of various charities. My father (real estate developer Joes Daemen, n.v.) ventured into the bidding war, along with some 7,600 other bidders from 159 countries. But the amounts soon skyrocketed, forcing him to withdraw. In the end, the winning bid was €23 million. The winning bidder, Justin Long, could not make time for the flight and will fly next time. So Blue Origin decided to offer me the seat so that not only the oldest astronaut ever - Wally Funk - but also the youngest would go into space with him."

De vlucht naar en in de ruimte duurde maar tien minuten, maar het waren de bijzonderste tien minuten van mijn leven.

Fantastisch! Een droom die werkelijkheid werd?

“Toch wel, ja. Als kind was ik al ontzettend gefascineerd door luchtvaart en ruimtevaart. Nadat ik mijn VWO-diploma behaalde, nam ik in 2020 een sabbatjaar om mijn vliegbrevet te halen. Momenteel studeer ik Natuurwetenschappen en Innovatiemanagement aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Maar ik droom ervan om ooit nog iets te doen in de lucht- of ruimtevaart. Ik wil heel graag een voorbeeld zijn voor andere jongeren en hun interesse wekken voor de ruimte en de wetenschap.”

Fantastic! So, a dream come true?

"Definitely. As a child I was already fascinated by aviation and space travel. After obtaining my VWO diploma, I took a sabbatical year in 2020 in order to get my pilot's licence. Currently, I am studying Natural Sciences and Innovation Management at the University of Utrecht. But I dream of doing something in the aerospace industry one day. I would really like to be a role model for other young people and awaken their interest in space and science."

The flight to and in space lasted only ten minutes, but they were the most memorable ten minutes of my life.

Werd je intensief voorbereid op je ruimtevlucht?

“Op twee dagen tijd kreeg ik veertien uur training. Dat is echt niet veel, maar ik was er zeer gerust in. Blue Origin heeft jaren aan de New Shepard gewerkt en hem uiteraard uitvoerig getest. Er vonden al vijftien onbemande vluchten plaats, waarbij de veiligheidssystemen uitgebreid werden getoetst. Bij de lancering, op dinsdag 20 juli 2021 om 8 uur plaatselijke tijd, werd de capsule samen met de raket recht omhoog gelanceerd. Op 76 kilometer hoogte werden de capsule en de raket van elkaar gescheiden. Daarna vloog de capsule nog door tot 106 kilometer hoogte, voorbij de Kármánlijn. Dit is een denkbeeldige grens op 100 kilometer hoogte die gebruikt wordt om een onderscheid te maken tussen lucht- en ruimtevaart. De vlucht zelf duurde slechts elf minuten. Kort na de lancering waren we gedurende drie minuten gewichtloos. Het uitzicht was geweldig: aan de ene kant de kromming van het aardoppervlak en aan de andere kant de donkere ruimte. Daarna begon de capsule opnieuw richting de aarde te vallen, met hoge snelheid door de atmosfeer heen. Met behulp van drie parachutes maakten we uiteindelijk een zachte landing in de woestijn van Van Horn in Texas. Home sweet home!” (lacht)

Were you intensively prepared for your space flight?

"In two days, I had fourteen hours of training. That's really not that much, but I felt very comfortable with it. Blue Origin worked on the New Shepard for years and of course tested it extensively. Fifteen unmanned flights have already been carried out, during which the safety systems were extensively tested. At the launch, on Tuesday 20 July 2021 at 8 am local time, the capsule was launched upwards together with the rocket. At an altitude of 76 kilometres, the capsule and the rocket were separated. After that, the capsule continued its flight up to an altitude of 106 kilometres, beyond the Kármán line. This is an imaginary boundary at an altitude of 100 kilometres used to differentiate between air and space travel. The flight itself lasted only 11 minutes. Shortly after the launch, we were weightless for three minutes. The view was incredible: the curve of the earth's surface on one side and the dark space on the other. Then the capsule started to fall in the direction of the Earth again, at high speed through the atmosphere. With the help of three parachutes we finally made a soft landing in the desert of Van Horn, Texas. Home sweet home!" (laughs)

Nude photography, the most vulnerable representation of human beings

Pascal Baetens is een klinkende naam in de wereld van de naaktfotografie. Op een bijzonder fragiele manier brengt hij de mens in zijn meest pure vorm in beeld. “Mijn sessies zijn ontmoetingen, en je kunt niet dichter bij iemand komen dan bij iemand die naakt is”, aldus Pascal Baetens.

U studeerde rechten in Leuven, en vanuit de juridische wereld die aanvankelijk voor u bestemd leek, sloeg u toch de artistieke weg in. Hoe is dat precies verlopen?

"Ik kwam uit een traditioneel gezin waar de boodschap duidelijk was: “je mag doen wat je wil, maar we zouden het appreciëren als je rechten studeert”. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan, ook al was mijn motivatie soms ver zoek. Ik mocht gelukkig van mijn ouders – eens ik mijn diploma op zak had – zeker nog een andere richting uitgaan. Ik koos politieke en sociale wetenschappen, met een uitgesproken voorkeur voor internationaal beleid. Ik maakte toen ook de keuze om in te stappen in het Erasmus-traject en enkele maanden in Athene te studeren. Vlakbij mijn verblijfplaats was een fotografieschool. Ik ging er avondles volgen en dat was bijna een ware openbaring voor mij. Het was een plek waar je je creatief kon uiten. We werden er aangespoord om in contact te staan met onze inspiratie, onze emoties, onze verbeelding. Het was volledig nieuw voor mij dat je daar überhaupt mócht mee bezig zijn.

Pascal Baetens is a resounding name in the world of nude photography. In a particularly vulnerable way, he portrays human beings in their purest form. "My sessions are meetings, and you cannot get any closer to someone than to someone who is naked", says Pascal Baetens.

You studied law in Leuven, and from the legal world that initially seemed to be your destiny, you turned to art. How did that work out exactly?

"I came from a traditional family where the message was clear: "you can do whatever you want, but we would appreciate it if you studied law". So that's what I did, even though my motivation was sometimes quite low. Fortunately, my parents allowed me - once I had graduated - to pursue another direction. I opted for political and social sciences, with a strong preference for international politics. Then I decided to follow the Erasmus programme and to study for a few months in Athens. Close to where I resided, I discovered a photography school. I went there for evening classes, which turned out to be a real revelation for me. It was a place where you could express yourself in a creative way. We were encouraged to be in touch with our inspiration, our emotions, our imagination. The fact that you were allowed to do that at all was completely new to me.

Ik zie mijn fotografie als een vorm van ontmoeting. En je kunt niet dichter bij iemand komen, dan bij een persoon die naakt is.

BAETENS

Terug in België, legde ik me verder toe op fotografie. Ik volgde cursussen en ook in mijn vrije tijd hield ik me er veel mee bezig. Een jaar later ging ik terug naar Athene en toonde ik mijn foto’s aan de prof bij wie ik les had gevolgd. Hij gaf me de raad om mijn werk, met zijn groeten, aan twee tijdschriften – een Engels en een Grieks – te bezorgen. De foto’s werden onmiddellijk gepubliceerd. Dat was de start van mijn carrière in fotografie."

De focus van uw werk ligt op naakt en dans, twee specifieke onderwerpen, van waar die keuze?

"Toen ik op de middelbare school zat, had ik vier uur per dag verplichte studie. Je mocht bij wijze van spreken niet links of rechts van je kijken, je blik mocht enkel gericht zijn op je studieboeken. Maar af en toe bracht een medeleerling wel eens ‘in het geniep’ een Snoecks mee, die onder de banken van de ene student naar de andere doorgegeven werd. In het bekende jaarboek stonden vaak sensuele foto’s, waaronder die van David Hamilton. Zijn romantische, wazige foto’s vertaalden de fantasiewereld van dromen en verlangens van de (toenmalige) adolescent in een jongensinternaat die ik was, in tweedimensionale platen, bijna schilderijen. Met de wetenschap dat die bevroren momenten ook echt bestaan hebben. Naakt- en dansfotografie zijn mijn lievelingstalen geworden om verhalen en emoties, zowel de mijne als die van de mensen waarmee ik werk, tot uiting te brengen."

Naaktheid is heel puur en fragiel, hoe gaat u om met de modellen?

"Iemand kan zich pas naakt aan de camera en aan de fotograaf geven als die persoon zich op zijn gemak voelt. Als dat er niet is, zie je dat toch op een of andere manier in de blik. Je voelt in de foto’s een vorm van weerstand.

When I was back in Belgium, I focused more on photography. I followed courses and also in my spare time I was very busy with it. A year later, I returned to Athens and showed my photos to the professor from whom I had been taking classes. He advised me to send my work, with his regards, to two magazines, one English version and one Greek version. The photos were published immediately. That marked the start of my career in photography."

Your work focuses on nudity and dance, two specific subjects, why this choice?

"In secondary school, I had to spend four hours a day in the study hall. During these hours you were not even allowed to look to the left or right of you, you were only allowed to look at your study books. But occasionally a fellow student would 'secretly' bring a Snoecks, which was passed from one student to another under the desks. The famous yearbook often contained sensual pictures, including those of David Hamilton. His romantic, blurred photographs translated the fantasy world of dreams and desires of the (former) adolescent in a boys' boarding school that I was, into two-dimensional plates, which were almost paintings. With the knowledge that those frozen moments actually existed. Nude and dance photography have become my favourite ways of revealing stories and emotions, both my own and those of the people I work with."

Nudity is something very pure and delicate, how do you deal with the models?

Y"ou can only expose yourself naked to the camera and the photographer if you feel comfortable. If that is not the case, you can somehow see it in the look. You feel some form of resistance in the photos.

Ik zie mijn fotografie als een vorm van ontmoeting. En je kunt niet dichter bij iemand komen, dan bij een persoon die naakt is. Om die reden wordt er zelfs geen make-up gebruikt tijdens de fotoshoots. De mens, in zijn meest pure vorm. Ook de emoties probeer ik weer te geven zoals die op dat moment aanwezig zijn. Je voelt wat je voelt, en ook daar wil ik mee werken.

Ik vraag ook gewoon aan mensen die ik fotogeniek vind, of ik ze mag fotograferen. En omgekeerd, word ik vaak gecontacteerd door mensen die mijn werk gezien hebben en die ook zo willen gefotografeerd worden. Met iedereen waarmee ik een sessie plan, wil ik een connectie hebben. Ik wil een facet van de persoon leren kennen. En uiteraard moet het van beide kanten klikken."

Als u in opdracht werkt, hoe krijgt u dan toch die connectie en zelfs een bepaalde breekbaarheid op beeld?

"Puur technisch gezien kun je altijd een perfect belichte en gestileerde foto creëren, maar zonder het creëren van sfeer, een aanwezigheid, een boodschap, blijft die ‘leeg’. Die mist iets. Een vorm van verbinding met je model tilt de foto onmiskenbaar naar een hoger niveau. Maar je kunt als fotograaf een uitstekende foto maken, ook zonder die connectie. Dan moet het model wel gevoel en emotie kunnen uitdrukken. De fotograaf Peter Lindbergh had een heel bijzondere manier om bij zijn modellen emoties teweeg te brengen. Hij zette vaak loeiharde muziek op. De muziek creëerde de sfeer en dus hoefde er niet per se een connectie tussen fotograaf en model te zijn."

I consider my photography to be a form of meeting. And you cannot get any closer to someone, than to a person who is naked. That is why no make-up is used in the photo shoots. Human beings, in their purest form. I also try to portray the emotions as they are at that particular moment. You feel what you feel, and that is what I want to work with.

I also simply ask people who I consider to be photogenic if I can photograph them. And vice versa, I am often contacted by people who have seen my work and who also want to be photographed like that. With each person I plan a session with, I want to have a connection. I want to get to know an aspect of the person. And of course, there has to be a mutual click."

When you work on assignment, how do you manage to capture that connection and even a certain fragility?

"From a purely technical point of view, you can always achieve a perfectly illuminated and styled photo, but without creating atmosphere, a presence, a message, it remains 'empty'. It is missing something. Some form of connection with your model undeniably takes the photo to a higher level. But as a photographer, you can actually make an excellent photo, even without that connection. To achieve this, the model must be able to express feeling and emotion. The photographer Peter Lindbergh had a very special way of triggering emotions in his models. He often put on very loud music. The music created the atmosphere and therefore there did not necessarily have to be a real connection between photographer and model."

U hebt een rijk gevuld palmares met expo’s tot in de Verenigde Staten, hoe is dat tot stand gekomen?

"Ik had al snel de beslissing gemaakt dat ik van fotografie mijn beroep wou maken. Ik heb daarom, van in het begin, veel tijd gemaakt voor zogenoemd ‘vrij werk’. Op die manier konden mensen kennismaken met mijn beeldtaal, en bovendien bood het mij de kans om verschillende dingen uit te proberen, zodat ik mijn aanpak, stijl en interesses kon blijven in vraag stellen en ontwikkelen. Overal waar ik kwam, trok ik foto’s. Elke locatie was voor mij een kans voor vrij werk.

Met de publicatie van mijn eerste boek, met een editie in Londen, begon de bal echt te rollen. Tijdschriften contacteerden mij voor opdrachten, organisaties vroegen mij lezingen of workshops te organiseren, galeries wilden mijn werk tentoonstellen, enz. En dat was onmiddellijk op internationaal niveau."

U brengt ook boeken uit en geeft workshops, wat wilt u andere fotografen bijbrengen?

"Ik wil vooral tonen hoe je sfeer en emotie in je werk kan steken. Hoe zet je zoiets ontastbaar om in een beeld? Hoe

You have a rich track record with exhibitions as far away as the United States, how did that come about?

"I quickly made the decision to make photography my profession. Therefore, from the beginning, I spent a lot of time on so-called 'free work'. This way people could discover my visual language, and it also gave me the opportunity to try out different things, so that I could continue to question and develop my approach, style and interests. Wherever I went, I took pictures. Every location was an opportunity for me to do free work.

With the publication of my first book, featuring an edition in London, the ball really started rolling. Magazines contacted me for assignments, organisations asked me to organise lectures or workshops, galleries wanted to exhibit my work, and so on. And that was immediately on an international level."

You also publish books and organise workshops, what do you want to teach other photographers?

I especially want to show how you can add atmosphere and emotion to your work. How do you convert something so

Zijn er bepaalde werken of expo’s die voor u extra bijzonder zijn?

"Uiteraard zijn er beelden of series van beelden die grote invloed hebben gehad op mijn carrière. Sommige foto’s vormden persoonlijke sleutelmomenten in mijn leven, andere waren dan weer heel cruciaal in mijn oeuvre. Zoals een heel krachtige en tegelijkertijd kwetsbare sessie die het coverbeeld van mijn eerste boek geleverd heeft. Of een reeks sessies met Klara, een levenslustige danseres die een onverwerkt verhaal van misbruik meedroeg. En me jaren nadien vroeg om peter te worden van haar kindje. De expo in Palo Alto in Californië, in 2003, opende de Amerikaanse markt voor mij. Mijn boeken werden er vanaf dat moment ook uitgegeven en mijn werk kreeg de kans om op heel wat grote fotobeurzen ontdekt te worden, zoals Parijs, San Francisco en New York."

The person you work with is someone of flesh and blood with their own story. Nude photography can trigger so many emotions. The person who is photographed naked often feels in a vulnerable position as opposed to someone who is dressed and holding a camera in their hand. Respect is very important when working with people, especially during nude photo sessions. With proper communication, you can integrate their stories and emotions into the session. "

Are there certain works or exhibitions that are of particular interest to you?

"Obviously, there are images or series of images that have had a great influence on my career. Some photographs were personal key moments in my life, while others were very influential in my oeuvre. For example, this was the case for the very powerful and at the same time vulnerable session that provided the cover image for my first book. Or a series of sessions with Klara, a lively dancer who carried an unresolved story of abuse. And years later she asked me to be godfather of her child! The exhibition in Palo Alto, California, in 2003, opened the American market to me. From then on, my books were also published there and my work had the opportunity to be discovered at many major photo exhibitions, such as in Paris, San Francisco and New York."

Wat brengt de toekomst nog voor u?

"Er staan nog wel enkele projecten in de steigers, zoals een nieuw leerboek waarin elke fototechnische keuze wordt gelinkt aan zijn effect op de sfeerschepping. En uiteraard een aantal specifieke fotocollecties en tentoonstellingsprojecten. Maar ik wil vooral gerichter gaan werken rond zingeving. Wat wil ik met mijn werk meegeven?

En dan denk ik niet alleen aan de ‘ernstige’ kant met de boodschap van respect en communicatie, maar ook aan vreugde, wat fijne gekheid, en een aangename portie sensualiteit.

Ik zit in het laatste stuk van mijn carrière en ik wil nu echt doen waar ik ten volle van geniet. Ik wil stilstaan bij hoe ik ben geëvolueerd doorheen de jaren en ontdekken waar ik nu nog naartoe wil. En hopelijk zal mijn verdere werk nog een aantal mensen kunnen bekoren."

What will the future bring for you?

"There are still some projects underway, such as a new textbook in which every photographic choice is linked to its effect on the creation of atmosphere. And obviously a number of specific photo collections and exhibition projects. But above all, I want to work more specifically on the theme of meaningfulness. What do I want to communicate through my work? And I am not only thinking of the 'serious' side with the message of respect and communication, but also of joy, some good craziness, and a pleasant dose of sensuality.

I am now in the final stretch of my career and I really want to do what I really enjoy. I want to reflect on how I have evolved over the years and discover where I still want to go. And hopefully, my continued work will still be able to fascinate a number of people."

Caroline Rigo

Een cosmeticalijn die emoties losmaakt bij mensen, waardoor ze zichzelf beter leren kennen en meer zichzelf kunnen zijn: die impact wil Caroline Rigo bereiken met haar beautylijn Cent Pur Cent. “Ik wil dat alle vrouwen zich innerlijk en uiterlijk goed voelen, en daarbij kan make-up helpen. Belangrijk voor mij was dat mijn product duurzaam, gezond, makkelijk én mooi zou zijn. De make-up is gebaseerd op mineralen. Hierdoor is ze geschikt voor elk huidtype, ook mensen met huidproblemen en chemopatiënten,” vertelt Caroline, die zich ontpopte van kleuterleidster tot gedreven onderneemster. Ze leerde om haar eigen dromen te verwezenlijken en haar geluk af te dwingen met een gezonde dosis lef en véél optimisme en enthousiasme.

Je startte in 2016 Cent Pur Cent op, je eigen beautylijn. Wat was je drijfveer?

“Als visagiste merkte ik dat veel vrouwen op zoek waren naar een gezond alternatief voor make-up. Heel wat dames die ik zag, hadden te kampen met een gevoelige huid, puistjes of acné door vette producten, of poriën en rimpels die geaccentueerd werden door traditionele poeders en foundations. Ik testte veel producten voor mijn job en zo

"I want all women to feel good both inside and out, and make-up can help with that. It was important to me that my product would be sustainable, healthy, easy and good looking. The make-up is based on minerals, which makes it suitable for all skin types, including people suffering from skin problems and chemo patients," says Caroline, who turned from a kindergarten teacher into a committed entrepreneur. She learned to fulfil her own dreams and to push her luck with a healthy dose of guts and a lot of optimism and enthusiasm.

In 2016, you launched Cent Pur Cent, your own beauty line. What was your motivation?

"As a make-up artist, I noticed that many women were looking for a healthy alternative to make-up. Lots of ladies I met struggled with sensitive skin, pimples or acne caused by oily products, or pores and wrinkles accentuated by traditional powders and foundations. For my job, I tested a lot of products and that's how I learned about mineral make-up. What a discovery: my skin looked better and

The line is only available in pharmacies: a deliberate choice because I want to promote Cent Pur Cent as healthy make-up in a nice container, because even that nice container makes you feel good when you use it!"

Oog in oog met de natuur: de Eqi-gletsjer

In het systeem van ons klimaat, is Groenland een belangrijke speler. Elk jaar verliest de ijskap mee dan 269 biljoen ton aan ijs. Indrukwekkende feiten die je met je eigen ogen kan aanschouwen in de Eqi-gletsjer, die over 80 km ten noorden van Ilulissat loopt. Per boot kan je dicht bij de gletsjer komen om de gigantische stukken ijs te zien afbreken. De bijhorende knalgeluiden zorgen voor een waar schouwspel. Wie er wil overnachten, kan tussen midden juni en midden september terecht in de ‘Glacier Lodge Eqi’. De gemeubelde huisjes met zicht op de gletsjer zorgen voor een unieke ervaring, ver weg van de bewoonde wereld.

Een duik in de hot springs

Warmwaterbronnen vind je op verschillende plekken in Groenland, maar enkel in Uunartoq in het zuiden kan je doorheen het hele jaar zwemmen. Op het onbewoonde eiland tussen Qaqortoq en Nanortalik, ligt de enige verwarmde spa, met zicht op de omliggende ijsbergen. Face to face with nature: the Eqi glacier

Within the system of our climate, Greenland represents a vital player. Every year, the ice cap loses more than 269 trillion tonnes of ice. Impressive facts that you can witness with your own eyes in the Eqi glacier, which stretches 80 km north of Ilulissat. Hot springs can be found in several places in Greenland, but only in Uunartoq in the south you can swim all year round. Vegan chef Pieter-Jan Lint

Chef Pieter-Jan Lint zette de volgende stap in zijn succesvolle carrière en opende samen met zijn partner Carmen Duytschaever een nieuw restaurant, Amaranth. Een nieuw verhaal van vegan cuisine op gastronomisch niveau. “In het restaurant mikken we op een zo breed mogelijk publiek om ze kennis te laten maken met de plantaardige keuken”, vertelt Pieter-Jan.

Chef Pieter-Jan Lint took the next step in his successful career and, together with his partner, Carmen Duytschaever, opened a new restaurant : Amaranth. A new story of vegan cuisine at gastronomic level. "In our restaurant, we aim for the broadest possible public to be introduced to vegan cuisine," says Pieter-Jan.

Van waar de keuze voor de vegan keuken?

"Ik ben al 20 jaar bezig met voeding, eerst als gepassioneerde hobbykok en later schoolde ik mij om tot professionele chef. Ik ben altijd bewust op zoek gegaan naar het verhaal achter onze voeding: welk traject legt het af, hoe komt het op ons bord en wat is de impact op onze leefomgeving. Tien jaar geleden ging ik al heel bewust om met producten. Ik koos bijvoorbeeld voor Noordzeevis en wou weten waar mijn vlees vandaan kwam. Maar ik begon me meer en meer de bedenking te maken of we die vis of dat vlees wel echt nodig hadden, want die producten legden óók een hele weg af en hadden een grote invloed op het waterverbruik en de koolstofuitstoot.

Mijn visie op voeding veranderde nog meer door mijn partner, die ik acht jaar geleden leerde kennen. Ik was me wel bewust van de impact en de duurzaamheid, maar door haar kwam ook het ethische aspect erbij. Waarom eten we een koe en een varken, maar een hond en een kat nemen we in huis? Het ene dier geven we een nummer, het andere een naam. Alles wat op deze planeet leeft, is

Why did you go for the vegan cuisine?

"My life has been about food for 20 years now, first as a passionate hobby cook and later as a professional chef. I've always been consciously looking for the story behind our food: the trajectory it has taken, how it arrives on our plate and what is its environmental impact. Ten years ago, I was already very conscious of the products I used. For example, I opted for North Sea fish and wanted to know where my meat came from. But I started to wonder whether we really needed that fish or meat, because those products also travelled a long way and had a huge impact on water consumption and carbon emissions.

My vision on food changed even more because of my partner, whom I met eight years ago. I was already aware of the impact and sustainability, but because of her, the ethical aspect came into play as well. Why do we eat a cow and a pig, while at the same time we take care of dogs and cats? We assign a number to one animal and a name to another. Everything that lives on this planet is so wonderful but we have unfortunately reduced it to a

"Het pand is heel klassevol, maar toch heerst er een ongedwongen sfeer. Het is er gezellig, warm, romantisch zelfs. We trekken onze natuurlijke visie door in het interieur en werkten met ecologische materialen zoals leem aan de muur en houten meubilair. De kaart verandert naargelang wat de boeren waarmee we samenwerken ons aanbieden. Alle producten zijn uiteraard plantaardig en zoveel mogelijk biologisch. Onze gastronomische gerechten gaan van een klein hapje vooraf tot een zoete afsluiter. We bieden een heel breed spectrum van smaken aan. We willen de klant echt tonen wat allemaal mogelijk is."

"The building is very classy, but still radiates a relaxed atmosphere. It is cosy, warm, romantic even. We continue our natural vision in the interior and used ecological materials such as loam on the walls and wooden furniture. The menu changes depending on what the farmers we cooperate with can offer us. All products are obviously vegetable and as much as possible organic. Our gastronomic dishes range from a small appetiser to a sweet finisher. We offer a very broad range of flavours. We really want to show the customer what is possible."

U begeleidt ook anderen in de wereld van ‘vegan cuisine’. Wat is uw drijfveer daarin?

"Ik geef inderdaad nog opleidingen aan ‘food professionals’. Ik blijf dat heel bewust en consequent doen, omdat ik de kneepjes van het vak van de plantaardige keuken aan andere chefs wil bijbrengen. Ik kan veel meer bereiken door hen te begeleiden en uit te dagen om de technieken ook in hun keuken toe te passen, dan enkel en alleen in mijn eigen restaurant mensen mee te nemen in mijn verhaal. Ik geef heel graag les, maar ik heb zeker de waarheid niet in pacht, en ik zie die momenten meer als een soort kruisbestuiving, een fascinerende synergie. Ik geef kennis door, maar leer zelf zeker evenveel bij van de anderen."

Hoe ziet u de plantaardige keuken verder evolueren, zowel op gastronomisch vlak als in een doorsnee huishouden als dagelijkse kost?

"De vegan keuken is momenteel nog wel gericht op een niche groep, en net daarom willen we vanuit de gastronomie een statement maken die breed opgepikt kan worden. Het sijpelt wel langzaamaan door bij een steeds grotere groep mensen. Iedereen wordt zich bewuster van voeding. Ik vermoed dat plantaardige voedingsgewoonten meer en meer in ons dagelijks leven zullen opgenomen worden, net zoals jaren geleden vegetarisme zijn plekje veroverd heeft. Het aanbod in de winkelrekken stijgt exponentieel, de informatie erover geraakt sneller verspreid, dus de stap naar plantaardige voeding wordt alsmaar kleiner. En je kunt heus voldoende variëren om een volwaardig voedingspatroon te ontwikkelen."

You also introduce others to the world of vegan cuisine. What drives you here?

"Indeed, I still offer courses for 'food professionals'. I continue to do that very consciously and consistently, because I want to teach the tricks of the art of vegan cuisine to other chefs. I can achieve much more by guiding them and challenging them to adopt the techniques in their own kitchens, rather than just immersing people in my story in my own restaurant. I love to teach, but I certainly don't have a monopoly on truth, and I regard those moments more as some sort of cross-pollination, a fascinating synergy. I pass on knowledge, but I learn just as much from others."

How do you foresee the evolution of plant-based cuisine, both in the gastronomic field and in the average household as a daily staple?

"Today, vegan cuisine is still aimed at a niche group, and that is why we want to make a statement from the gastronomy sector that can be widely picked up. But this trend is slowly spreading to a larger group of people. Everyone is becoming more aware of nutrition. I expect that vegetable food habits will be increasingly incorporated in our daily lives, just as vegetarianism did years ago. The range of vegan products on shop shelves is increasing exponentially, the information about these products is spreading more rapidly, so the switch to plant-based foods is becoming increasingly smaller. And you can definitely vary enough to have a balanced diet."

When Matty Zadnikar introduced the concept of shared yacht ownership to the market in 2016, people were sceptic about the idea, but six years later it turned out to be a big success. "With 6 yachts worth a total of €75 million, 20 shares and 15 partners, we can safely call it a great success. The greatest proof that the concept is working, is the fact that after six years not a single person has sold his share," says Matty Zadnikar. This has been such a success that we also have been contacted by experienced or recent yacht owners to see if we can serve as their 'matchmaker' and sell 25% or 50% or more of their yacht.

What yachts do you currently have in your portfolio?

Route verandert elk jaar

De Epic is een achtdaagse etappe-race bestaande uit een proloog en 7 etappes. Het parcours verandert elk jaar. De enige constante is dat de renners om en bij de 700 km met bijna 17.250 hoogtemeters moeten overbruggen, en dit door de overweldigende natuur van Zuid-Afrika. De ondergrond is zeer afwisselend, van uitdagende gravelpaden en steile rotsbeklimmingen tot fietsen door het water, in het bos en langs de kustlijn. Tijdens de etappes passeren de renners door verschillende steden van de Westelijke Kaap. Voor zij die kunnen, de ideale gelegenheid om ook wat aan sightseeing te doen.

Not for sissies

The Absa Cape Epic is a multi-day mountain bike race in South Africa, which has been held in March every year since 2004. It is known as one of the toughest multi-day MTB races. The concept is unique: the riders do not ride alone, but in pairs. Each duo must finish each stage together. The duo that sets the best times at the end of all the stages wins.

The participants are divided into different categories. For instance, there is a classification for male and female pros, as well as for mixed duos. For amateurs, there is a master classification. Since 2013, there is also a classification for men over fifty: the grand masters.

Route changing every year

The Epic is an eight-day stage race consisting of a prologue and 7 stages. The route changes every year. The only thing that remains the same is the fact that the riders have to cover a total of roughly 700 km and up to 17,250m of vertical ascent, and this through the overwhelming nature of South Africa. The surface is very diverse, from challenging gravel paths and steep rock climbs to cycling through water, in the forest and along the coastline. During the stages, the riders will pass through various towns in the Western Cape. For those who are up to it, this is the ideal opportunity to do some sightseeing as well.

Full-service MTB-race

De Cape Epic is een full-service wedstrijd. Alles wordt tot in de puntjes geregeld voor de deelnemers, van start tot finish. De renners moeten alleen maar denken aan hun lichaam verzorgen en fietsen. Elke dag start met een stevig ontbijtbuffet – vroeg genoeg, zodat alles goed verteerd is tegen het vertrek. Op verschillende punten op het parcours zijn sportvoeding, water en isotone sportdrank beschikbaar. Medische professionals zijn altijd in de buurt en in elke Race Village bevindt zich een volledig uitgerust race hospital. Na elke etappe worden de fietsen van de renners gekuist, terwijl zij zelf kunnen herstellen van de zware inspanning. Slapen gebeurt in eenpersoonstenten die voorzien zijn van een matras. Er zijn ook afgesloten douche-units waar de renners kunnen genieten van een deugddoende douche na een zware dag in het zand.

Full-service MTB race

The Absa Cape Epic is a full-service race. Everything is organised down to the last detail for the participants, from start to finish. The riders only need to think about taking care of their bodies and cycling. Each day starts with a solid breakfast buffet - served early enough so that everything is well digested by the time the race starts. Sports nutrition, water and isotonic sports drinks are available at various points along the route. Medical professionals are always nearby and each Race Village houses a fully equipped race hospital. After each stage, the riders' bikes are cleaned, while they themselves can recover from the heavy efforts. Sleeping takes place in single tents equipped with a mattress. There are also enclosed shower units where the riders can enjoy a refreshing shower after a hard day of cycling in the sand.

GRAVEL BIKE HYPE

Is de Absa Cape Epic iets te serieus? Dan is de immens populaire Belgian Waffle Ride misschien wel meer uw ding. Tijdens deze gravelbike race staat alles in het teken van België. De reeks gravelraces is het kindje van de Amerikaanse ondernemer Michael Marckx en moet een weerspiegeling zijn van de Vlaamse voorjaarskoersen – of toch hoe de Amerikanen denken dat het er hier aan toegaat. En wat is het eerste waaraan een Amerikaan denkt bij het horen van de naam België? Juist ja: een wafel.

De eerste Waffle Ride vond plaats in 2012 in San Diego en later kwamen er races bij in Utah, North Carolina en Kansas. De deelnemers kunnen kiezen uit drie verschillende parcours: de Waffle (111,11 mile), de Wafer (111,11 kilometer) en de Wanna (36,2 mile want 3 + 6 + 2 = 11). De symboliek rond het getal 11 is een hommage aan de Amerikaanse gravelpionier Steve Tilford, die geobsedeerd was door dit getal. De Belgian Waffles Rides zijn erg populair en trekken altijd heel wat (ex-)renners aan, bijvoorbeeld ‘onze’ Remco Evenepoel (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl).

Voor de start kunnen de deelnemers krachten opdoen met – what else? – wafels. Bij elke editie zouden zo’n 3.000 wafels verorberd worden. Finishers worden beloond met het unieke Badass-bier, een verwijziging naar bierland België. Het Belgische thema is ludiek aanwezig doorheen de hele wedstrijd. Het parcours is onderverdeeld in zones, die allemaal een grappige Vlaamse naam hebben: Wild Paard, Gedoogbeleid, Zwerm Heksen, Kakaboulet en – we kid you not - Heel Moeilijke en Niet-Meewerkende Stiefzuster. Die Amerikanen hebben toch wel een zeer bijzonder beeld van ons land…

Is the Absa Cape Epic a bit too serious? Then maybe the Belgian Waffle Ride is a great alternative for you. During this gravelbike race everything is dedicated to Belgium. The series of gravel races is the creation of the American entrepreneur Michael Marckx and must be a reflection of the Flemish spring races - or at least how the Americans believe things are done here. And what is the first thing that an American thinks of when he hears the name Belgium? Exactly: a waffle.

The first Waffle Ride took place in San Diego in 2012 and later races were added in Utah, North Carolina and Kansas. The participants can choose from three different courses: the Waffle (111.11 miles), the Wafer (111.11 kilometres) and the Wanna (36.2 miles as 3 + 6 + 2 = 11). The symbolism surrounding the number 11 is a tribute to the American gravel pioneer Steve Tilford, who was obsessed with this number. Na een lange coronaperiode is de terugkeer naar kantoor definitief ingezet. Maar de tijd dat we met z’n allen op kantoor aanwezig waren om uren te vergaderen in een duffe vergaderzaal lijkt voorgoed voorbij. “Onze manier van vergaderen is de laatste jaren enorm veranderd. Terwijl we vroeger meestal met een grote groep in één ruimte zaten, vergaderen we post-corona bijna standaard via een online tool. Programma’s als Microsoft Teams en Zoom zijn ontzettend populair geworden. Nu we steeds meer overgaan naar hybride werken, maakt de hybride vergadering ook zijn opmars. Dit heeft grote gevolgen voor de inrichting van de vergaderruimtes op kantoor,” weet Laurent Decavele. Hij is Director bij Van Gils, integrator van hoogwaardige en eenvoudig te gebruiken audiovisuele systemen.

Wat moeten we precies verstaan onder een hybride meeting?

“In de meeste bedrijven wordt thuiswerk gecombineerd met werken op kantoor. Een hybride meeting is een meeting waarbij een deel van de medewerkers aanwezig zijn op kantoor en een ander deel online deelneemt vanop een andere locatie, meestal hun home office.”

After a long corona period, our way back to the office has finally started. But the days when we were all sitting in the office for hours on end meeting in a dull meeting room seem to be gone forever. "Our way of meeting has changed dramatically in recent years. Whereas in the past we usually gathered in one room with a large group, post-corona meetings are now almost always held online. Programs like Microsoft Teams and Zoom have become incredibly popular. Now that we are increasingly moving towards hybrid working, hybrid meetings are also on the rise. This has major consequences for the design of the meeting rooms at the office," says Laurent Decavele. He is Director at Van Gils, integrator of high-end and easy-to-use audiovisual systems.

So, what exactly should we understand by a hybrid meeting?

"In most companies, working from home is combined with working at the office. A hybrid meeting is a meeting where one part of the employees is present in the office and another part participates online from another location, which is usually their home office."

Daarom is het belangrijk om alle deelnemers optimaal te kunnen horen en zien, waar ze ook deelnemen. Het glashelder capteren van stemmen, een vlekkeloze screenshare en deelnemers goed in beeld brengen zijn drie prioriteiten waar we geen toegift op doen. Er zijn veel mogelijkheden, afhankelijk van de behoeftes van de klant. Denk aan het gebruik van richtmicrofoons, subtiel ingewerkt in het plafond van de vergaderruimte. Hierdoor is elke spreker duidelijk te horen zonder dat er microfoons in de weg staan. Een andere mogelijkheid is externe camera’s op basis van AI installeren, die volgen wie aan het woord is. Zo kunnen de deelnemers vanop afstand de vergadering nog beter volgen. Absorberende panelen of gordijnen zorgen er dan weer voor dat de medewerkers thuis geen storende achtergrondgeluiden uit de vergaderruimte horen.”

What does the switch to hybrid meetings mean for meeting rooms in companies?

"It is no longer sufficient to equip a meeting room with only a presentation screen on the wall. The difference between holding meetings in the office and remotely has to be minimal. That is why it is important to be able to hear and see all participants optimally, regardless of where they are participating. Crystal-clear voice capture, flawless screen-share and a proper visualisation of participants are three priorities that we do not compromise on. There are many possibilities, depending on the needs of the client. Think of the use of directional microphones, which are subtly embedded in the ceiling of the meeting room. This allows each speaker to be heard clearly without microphones getting in the way. Another possibility is to install external AI cameras following the speaker. This enables participants to follow the meeting even more closely from a distance. Absorbing panels or curtains on the other hand ensure that employees at home do not hear disturbing background noise from the meeting room."

Beide toestellen zijn uitgerust met een 2-brancard Lifeportsysteem en vier stoelen, geschikt voor het vervoeren van twee patiënten met arts en verpleegkundige en maximaal drie extra begeleiders plus hun bagage. Met de aanvullende medische apparatuur is ASL Group in staat om kritieke patiënten onder volledige intensieve

In these two aircraft all necessary medical equipment is available and a medical team is present. The team always consists of a pilot, a co-pilot, a doctor and a nurse. They accompany the patient throughout the flight to ensure that they can intervene quickly if necessary."

How should we imagine 'flying ambulances'?

"This role is carried out by the Learjets OO-MED and OODOC. Both aircraft are equipped with a 2-brancard Lifeport system and four seats, capable of transporting two patients with doctor and nurse and up to three additional escorts plus their luggage. The additional medical equipment enables ASL Group to transport critical patients under full intensive care. The range of the aircraft is approximately 1800 NM (3,334km) with a cruising speed of 430 Kts (797km/h). As a back-up for the Learjet operations, other aircraft of the ASL Group are also frequently deployed, for example for urgent organ transports."

Denk aan het inzetten van ambulances van en naar de luchthaven, eventueel inschakelen van medische helikopters en repatriëring uit afgelegen of risicovolle gebieden. We werken ook samen met enkele grote verzekeringsmaatschappijen. ASL FLY MED handelt alles af zodat de patiënt en de familie zich niet moeten bezig houden met allerlei administratie en papierwerk. We willen een echte partner zijn voor hen. Het is niet zomaar een vlucht van punt a naar punt b. Het gaat om mensen: daar zijn we ons zeer goed van bewust.”

Medical transportation involves more than just the flight to and from the hospital. What else do you provide?

"There is a lot involved in the medical transport of persons, especially in aviation. In addition to the ambulance flight itself, a lot of other arrangements have to be made. Think of the deployment of ambulances to and from the airport, the possible use of medical helicopters and repatriation from remote or dangerous areas. We also collaborate with some large insurance companies. ASL FLY MED takes care of everything so that the patient and the family do not have to bother with all kinds of administration and paperwork. We want to be a real partner for them. It's not just a flight from point a to point b. We are talking about real people here: we are well aware of that."

Sounds like work that requires a lot of ambition and dedication.

"That's the way it is. Every flight is a new adventure: we never know in advance what awaits us. In fact, nothing is really 'normal' in our profession... Unfortunately, we are also often faced with sad situations. Especially when it

Vooral wanneer het om kinderen gaat, kan dat zwaar zijn. Maar onze teams doen het voortreffelijk. Ze zijn ontzettend gepassioneerd en flexibel, en ze leren continu van elkaar. Het is een veeleisende job, maar we krijgen veel appreciatie en soms eens een persoonlijke bedanking. Onlangs verzorgden we het medisch transport van een baby die dringend een nieuw hart moest krijgen. Na afloop van de operatie stuurden de ouders ons een foto van hun lachend kindje. Daar doen we het voor!”
