CKD occurs when a disease or condition impairs kidney function as kidneys damage worsen over several months or years.

Our kidneys are located near the middle of our back, just below our rib cage, with one of each side of our spine. They are our body’s natural filters, removing toxic waste and extra water from our blood in the form of urine.

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), kidneys become damaged and lose their ability to function over time. They can no longer filter blood as well as before, leaving many toxins and waste in the blood.

Dialysis is a type of treatment that helps your body remove toxins, waste, and extra water from your blood when your kidneys are unable to. It does the work of your kidneys since they are not in the best shape.

Dialysis was first used successfully in the 1940's, and it became a standard treatment for kidney failure in the 1970s. Many patients have been helped by this treatment!
