What is the best part about working at the Aquatic Center?

“First, the best part about working at the Aquatic Center is the ability to turn an obsession of water sports into a profession. Second, the enthusiasm, conviction, and passion among the staff allow our team to reach higher levels of excellence. Third, the dynamic atmosphere at the Aquatic Center always creates new and exciting challenges. Fourth, the ability to meet new friends and influence their lives in a positive manner creates lifelong friendships. Finally, I get to work with the best teammate, my wife.”

Helpful hints when sailing at the Sac State Aquatic Center

For lake conditions call: 916-278-2842 or check the weather link on our website.

For safety purposes, 2 people are required to rent the Quest, Holder 20 (Keelboats) or Catalina 22.

Thou shalt not sail where birds are standing.

If you see birds standing on what looks like water, they are usually on a “shoal” or shallow area. Lake Natoma is surrounded by cobble and rock. These elements are hazardous to the bottom of a fiberglass boat.

Learn and know the shallows and shoal areas. PLEASE STAY CLEAR.

Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) and FOOTWEAR with heelstraps must be WORN AT ALL TIMES .

Do not attempt to beach or land your boat anywhere except the Aquatic Center docks.

Due to heightened security, the Federal Bureau of Reclamation is extremely sensitive to the Nimbus Dam facility. Please stay at least 200 feet clear of Nimbus Dam.

The Aquatic Center will not permit boat launching from our facility in extremely high wind, high current flow, or electrical storm conditions.

All sailors must know the proper use, care, and storage of Aquatic Center equipment.

Sailboats need to abide by right of way rules. Lake Natoma is a multi-use lake so please be respectful of all users (swimmers, rowers, paddlers, etc.).

Remember: Water, sun block, and a paddle can be your best friend!

BASIC SAILING

Min. age requirement: 16 years old

(Children 12-15 must be accompanied by a parent)

BASIC SAILING - ZEST

10 HOURS Prerequisite: Must pass swim test

The Zest sailboat is taught using a main sail only and can be sailed by one person (single-handed). The Zest provides a fun and stable sailing environment with a length of 12', a beam of 5', and a weight of 150 lbs. These boats are stored on our docks and renters are required to slide the boats on and off the dock for use. The Zest is quick and easy to rig, fun to sail, and relatively easy to recover from a capsize. This is a great boat to learn on, and is perfect for anyone wanting to sail solo! This boat is able to accommodate an adult and a child.*

BASIC SAILING - QUEST

12 HOURS Prerequisite: Must pass swim test

The Quest sailboat is taught using a main sail and a jib and requires two people to rent at the Aquatic Center (only one person needs to be certified). Students will be paired for on-the-water training.  The Quest provides a very stable sailing environment with a length of 14', a beam of 6', and a weight of 310 lbs.  These boats are stored on our docks and renters are required to slide the boats on and off the dock for use. The Quest is stable in various wind conditions and is a great boat for beginners as well as more advanced sailing.*

BASIC SAILINGKEELBOAT

12 HOURS Prerequisite: Must pass swim test

The Keelboat is a larger, more stable boat with a mainsail and Jib. The Keelboat requires two people to rent at the Aquatic Center (only one person needs to be certified). 3-5 students will be grouped for on-thewater training. The Holder 20 keelboats are perfect for those interested in learning how to sail a larger style of sailboat. The cockpit has bench style seating and can comfortably accommodate 4-5 adults. SAILING CLINICS

Sailing Clinics are offered to graduates of our Quest or Keelboat Basic Sailing Courses. These Clinics are for those who want to be able to utilize additional types of sailboats in our fleet without repeating a full Basic Sailing class, or those wishing to brush up on rigging and derigging these types of boats Attendees are expected to already have solid sailing skills. While limited sailing instruction is included, these Clinics are focused on teaching you how to safely rig and derig the boat, launching and docking skills, and how to safely recover from a capsize (with the exception of the keelboats).

SAILING CLINICS

ZEST & QUEST CLINICS

See detailed descriptions of these boats under the Basic Sailing section.

LASER CLINIC Physicality: Very High

The Laser sailboat, arguably the most popular sailboat, is our most challenging as well as our most exhilarating sailboat. Although it can accommodate 1 adult and 1 child, it is intended to be sailed solo. It is a 13’ fiberglass hull with a large mainsail. It requires substantial movement of the sailor to maintain balance and it will capsize quite easily. Rigging/derigging is also more difficult than other boats in our fleet.

SCHEDULING: LASER, QUEST & ZEST CLINICS

These clinics will be scheduled based on demand: when you register for one of these clinics your name will be added to a waiting list and, when a minimum of three people have registered, we will create a Clinic and contact you. Each Clinic will be 3 hours of instruction on the dock.

Summer Camp WHAT TO EXPECT!

Monday Morning Check-In:

Check-in will be located in our circle drive, just east of our parking lots, from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. Advised parent drop off is 8:00 am for the rest of the week. Please be patient when waiting for your child to be checked in. We need to check in every child individually to make sure that they are properly placed in a group. We try to be as fast and efficient as possible, however, you should still allow extra time on Monday morning. Be prepared to sign your child in for camp every morning. All campers receive a free T-shirt. To help the morning run more smoothly, parents can do the following:

• Please download the camper packet for each of your campers from the Aquatic Center website. Make sure that the packets are completely filled out. The release form must be signed with emergency phone numbers included, contacts and medical information must be completed.

• Make sure your child has already applied their sun block and they are prepared with a lunch and plenty of water.

• Have the camp balance paid ahead of time. We require that the balance is paid a week before camp starts.

Daily:

After the first day, you will still need to check in your child in the mornings. Advised parent drop off is 8:00 am. Instruction begins at 8:30 am. If the child is not here, we will call you. If you know that you will be late or missing a day, please let us know at (916) 278-2842. Ice cream is sold daily from 3:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. ($1.50 - $5.00)

Check-Out:

Camp instruction and clean up is over at 3:30 p.m. Checkout is between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. at the inner circle drive. Children must be picked up by 4:30 p.m. Your child must be signed out every afternoon. The campers are not allowed to leave on their own or wait at the front of the Aquatic Center alone. This is for their safety! If your child is in a carpool we must have written permission.

What to Bring:

Sun block, lip balm, beach towel, bathing suit, t-shirt, shorts, hat or visor, aquatic shoes with a heel strap such as Teva sandals (bare feet are not permitted!), water bottle, sack lunch, sweats for cool weather, sunglasses with floaties or a neck strap, ski gloves for Water Ski Campers, optional bike helmet for Adventure Campers, lunch and refillable water bottle. It is helpful if the campers bring all of their belongings in a labeled tote bag or small ice chest. The Aquatic Center is not responsible for lost or stolen articles so please label all of their belongings. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

Wear proper shoes with a heel strap such as Teva sandals (bare feet are not permitted!)
