These qualifications are required to help maintain the high level of performance that we expect from our staff. BRIAN DULGAR – DIRECTOR btdulgar@csus.edu A graduate of Sacramento State with a B.A. in Business Marketing, Brian has been a part of the Aquatic Center for over 38 years. With his passion in aquatic and boating activities, he helped build the popular wakeboard/water ski programs available at the Aquatic Center. Competing on the Sacramento State Water Ski Team, Brian won the 1988 Men’s National Slalom Title, becoming a National All-American. He has coached many regional and national competitors, including the Hornets to 15 national appearances and the 1999 Men’s National Slalom Team Title. He currently serves on the California Department of Boating and Waterways, Boating and Safety Advisory Committee, and is an American Water Ski Association (AWSA) Driver and AWSA national competitor.

What is the best part about working at the Aquatic Center?

“First, the best part about working at the Aquatic Center is the ability to turn an obsession of water sports into a profession. Second, the enthusiasm, conviction, and passion among the staff allow our team to reach higher levels of excellence. Third, the dynamic atmosphere at the Aquatic Center always creates new and exciting challenges. Fourth, the ability to meet new friends and influence their lives in a positive manner creates lifelong friendships. Finally, I get to work with the best teammate, my wife.” CINDI DULGAR – ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR (Operations & Youth programs) cindi@csus.edu Cindi is a graduate of Sacramento State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Recreation Administration and in 2005 completed her Master’s at Sacramento State. In 1984, Cindi helped to jump start the water ski program, summer camps and special events to full scale. Over the years, she has enjoyed watching the programs and facility grow and be refined to what you see today. Her passion for competitive water skiing and living the #LakeLife is what brought her to the Aquatic Center. The relationships she has built and developed with staff, athletes, AC Alumni, and partners has kept her at Lake Natoma! Cindi strongly believes providing boating safety education to a variety of children and adults will ultimately save lives. As part of her Masters Project, she created the WET program (Water Enrichment Training) with hopes of bringing team building and a high “fun factor” to augment the existing AC boating safety programs.

What is the best part about working at the Aquatic Center?

“There is never a dull moment at the Aquatic Center. I also love the variety of programs and special events. The adult, college and youth programs have a positive effect on so many lives and it is rewarding to know that I played a small part in that.” HEATHER WILHELMI - OPERATIONS MANAGER hheieck@csus.edu Heather attended California State University, Chico where she studied Recreation Administration. Heather’s love of aquatics started at an early age as she has been a competitive water skier since the age of eight and was ranked 16th in the world at the age of 17. She served as the Head Coach of the Chico State Water Ski Team for five years and guided them to four national championships appearances. Heather also served as the National Collegiate Water Ski Association Regional Chairman and has been a USA Water Ski Association Judge and Scorer. She is currently a member of the Sacramento Water Ski Club and serves as the club’s Secretary. Heather loves to camp with her family and welcomed her second child in 2018.

Helpful hints when sailing at the Sac State Aquatic Center For lake conditions call: 916-278-2842 or check the weather link on our website. For safety purposes, 2 people are required to rent the Quest, Holder 20 (Keelboats) or Catalina 22. Thou shalt not sail where birds are standing. If you see birds standing on what looks like water, they are usually on a “shoal” or shallow area. Lake Natoma is surrounded by cobble and rock. These elements are hazardous to the bottom of a fiberglass boat. Learn and know the shallows and shoal areas. PLEASE STAY CLEAR. Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) and FOOTWEAR with heelstraps must be WORN AT ALL TIMES. Do not attempt to beach or land your boat anywhere except the Aquatic Center docks. Due to heightened security, the Federal Bureau of Reclamation is extremely sensitive to the Nimbus Dam facility. Please stay at least 200 feet clear of Nimbus Dam.

The Aquatic Center will not permit boat launching from our facility in extremely high wind, high current flow, or electrical storm conditions. All sailors must know the proper use, care, and storage of Aquatic Center equipment. Sailboats need to abide by right of way rules. Lake Natoma is a multi-use lake so please be respectful of all users (swimmers, rowers, paddlers, etc.). Remember: Water, sun block, and a paddle can be your best friend!

SAILING CLINICS

Sailing Clinics are offered to graduates of our Quest or Keelboat Basic Sailing Courses. These Clinics are for those who want to be able to utilize additional types of sailboats in our fleet without repeating a full Basic Sailing class, or those wishing to brush up on rigging and derigging these types of boats. Attendees are expected to already have solid sailing skills. While limited sailing instruction is included, these Clinics are focused on teaching you how to safely rig and derig the boat, launching and docking skills, and how to safely recover from a capsize (with the exception of the keelboats).

SAILING CLINICS ZEST & QUEST CLINICS

See detailed descriptions of these boats under the Basic Sailing section.

LASER CLINIC Physicality: Very High The Laser sailboat, arguably the most popular sailboat, is our most challenging as well as our most exhilarating sailboat. Although it can accommodate 1 adult and 1 child, it is intended to be sailed solo. It is a 13’ fiberglass hull with a large mainsail. It requires substantial movement of the sailor to maintain balance and it will capsize quite easily. Rigging/derigging is also more difficult than other boats in our fleet. SCHEDULING: LASER, QUEST & ZEST CLINICS

These clinics will be scheduled based on demand: when you register for one of these clinics your name will be added to a waiting list and, when a minimum of three people have registered, we will create a Clinic and contact you. Each Clinic will be 3 hours of instruction on the dock.

CAPITAL OUTRIGGER

Capital Outrigger was established as a program of the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in 2016. Since that time, the program has evolved as a club that is an active member of the Northern CAPITAL OUTRIGGER California Outrigger Canoe Association (NCOCA). The club’s nick name, ‘Ohana Kai, translates as “Family of the Sea” and is reflective of its purpose: in a supportive climate like a family, to develop an understanding and appreciation of the culture and values of Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling through education, recreation and competition. Anyone is welcome, regardless of age, gender or paddling experience. The program offers various options by which newcomers may become involved in this engaging activity.
