5 PRINCIPLES OF ASICS SHOES – WHAT GOES INTO EVERY SHOE We design our running shoes with intent. When each new design is created, we ask the following questions:
Is this shoe created for speed or pure comfort?
Will the shoe need stability over rocky terrain or pounding the pavement?
Should the fit be snug or roomy? When the shoe’s intent is known, we further define the design within five principles. Each attribute contains a range that reaches from one extreme to the other. In the end, we create a shoe that is perfected for its purpose.
CUSHIONING When your foot lands on the ground, cushioning is there to soften the impact. It goes under your heel and forefoot, and sometimes runs all the way through the midsole from top to bottom. How much you need depends on your weight, typical speed and training regime.
SUPPORT This is all about how much the shoe stabilizes your foot as you run. If you’re an overpronator, the support keeps your foot from rolling too far inwards to assure that all your effort is helping you go forward. But runners who have a neutral running style – where their foot rolls inward just the right amount – don’t need the stabilizing technology, but they may still like a little added support to keep their foot secure throughout a long run.
