Selling children for sex is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. In Britain, David Cameron has deemed CSE a ‘national threat’ on an equal footing with serious organised crime and terrorism.

For Britain’s Muslim community, CSE is a contentious and emotive subject which sparked a rise in hate crime and protests by the far right. Newspapers like the Daily Mirror urged the British Muslim community to take “a long hard look at what it has allowed to happen” In this first report Asian Sunday examines the link between CSE and ethnicity and asks if Britain is in denial about the identity of the sex gangs in our communities. more on pages 6 and 7

Palestinians attend funeral of Baby Ali’s father, who also died from severe burns caused by the arson attack.

Following the funeral of 18-month old Palestinian baby, Ali Saad Dawabsheh who was killed in an arson attack in the occupied West Bank, it was now the turn of the Baby’s father, Saad Dawabsheh who also died from severe burns caused by the settler attack.

Palestinian leaders condemned Israel's policy on settlements and dubbed the attack as "war crimes".

The 32-year-old died in Soroka hospital, where he had been treated for second-degree burns to more than

80 percent of his body. He leaves his wife and son, who remain critical.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and saying they must fight "terrorism" together.

The Palestine Liberation Organization has said it holds Israel's government "fully responsible" for the death of the 18month-old baby and will lodge a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The US state department condemned the "vicious terrorist attack" in "the strongest possible terms", urging Israel to "apprehend the murderers" and calling on both sides to "avoid escalating tensions".

The attack was roundly condemned around the world, including by Israeli leaders, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ringing

According to the UN, at least 120 attacks by Israeli settlers have been documented in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of 2015.

At least 29 people have been killed in a suicide bomb blast in Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province, an official said.

According to the Dawn, the people killed included mainly members of illegal armed groups that have clashed with the security forces and insurgents in the past.

District administrative chief of Khan Abad district, Heyatullah Amiri, said that a suicide bomber on foot targeted a meeting of criminal groups.

Twenty-five of those killed were members of the armed groups, including four leaders, while the remaining four were civilians, said Amiri.

The assassination plot is

being orchestrated from Syria by Islamic State commanders, with extremists allegedly planning to explode a "pressure cooker bomb" in central London during events to mark 70 years since the end of the Second World War. The Mail on Sunday claimed it was informed by sources that a specific threat was made against the Queen, triggering a review of security arrangements. But the Metropolitan Police has encouraged people to

continue with their plans to attend the celebrations, which are expected to be watched by thousands.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "While the UK threat level from international terrorism remains severe, we would like to reassure the public that we constantly review security plans for public events, taking into account specific intelligence and the wider threat.

"Our priority is the safety and security for all those attending or involved. The public are encouraged to continue with their plans to attend or take part in events as normal."

The spokesman insisted that Scotland Yard was on the look out for terror threats emanating from the UK and abroad.

"We would also like to reiterate our long-standing advice to remain vigilant and alert.

"As ever we would urge the public to get in touch to report anything suspicious by calling the confidential anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321 or in an emergency by calling 999."

Buckingham Palace refused to comment on the reported threat.

Tackling the myth of the

‘Asian sex gangs’

Selling children for sex is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. In Britain, David Cameron has deemed CSE a ‘national threat’ on an equal footing with serious organised crime and terrorism.

For Britain’s Muslim community, CSE is a contentious and emotive subject which sparked a rise in hate crime and protests by the far right. Newspapers like the Daily Mirror urged the British Muslim community to take “a long hard look at what it has allowed to ¬happen” In this first report Asian Sunday examines the link between CSE and ethnicity and asks if Britain is in denial about the identity of the sex gangs in our communities.

The industrial scale of children being trafficked and sold for sex in the UK would probably never have come to light had it not been for one fact . The grooming gangs that hit the headlines were ‘Asian’ For over a decade, the Home Office ignored reports which show that year on year nearly 5000 children were at risk of CSE across the UK. In 2011, CSE became front page news when The Times newspaper proclaimed that there was a “conspiracy of silence” around the numbers of Pakistani men abusing young white girls in on street grooming gangs.

Agencies said fears of being branded racist prevented them from taking action.

Michelle Lee-Izu, Director for Barnardo’s Children’s Services and Lead on CSE, told Asian Sunday that the emphasis on race is putting children at risk.

Barnardo’s are the leading provider of CSE services in the UK, with services in 47 locations.

Last year, the charity worked with 3,175 children at risk of CSE. Izu warns that “The evidence from our young people is that it’s men of a whole range of cultures who are involved in sexual exploitation. People have to be held to account regardless of what race or culture they are from but it’s really important that people don’t get caught up in the myth that it’s only one race.”

Izu said “The risk is that girls from a range of cultures don’t get identified as victims. One of our concerns is that the girls we are identifying are mainly white” She’s quick to ask “Have services really found the way to reach girls from a range of races and cultures where exploitation is hidden?”

After the Jay Inquiry confirmed the extent of agency failings in Rotherham, Theresa May told MP’s that “I am clear that cultural concerns – the fear of being racist, and the frankly disdainful attitude to some of our most vulnerable children must never stand in the way of child protection. CSE happens in all communities” Out of Sight, Out of Mind (2011) by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection is the only study into links between on street grooming and offender profiles in the UK. Of nearly 3000 alleged groomers, 28 per cent

were of Asian origin. This figure included men from Pakistani heritage, Bangladesh, British born Asians and the rest of the entire sub-continent. The vast majority were white British.

Instead of confronting the truth about the grooming gangs, CSE is seen through a distorted prism of difference.

On 17 April 2015, amidst a blaze

of publicity, six men were jailed for a combined total of 31 years and nine months for child sexual exploitation offences in Banbury in Oxfordshire. All were of Asian heritage.

The coverage of their crimes was a stark contrast to another trial which started a few days later in Wrexham. During the 70’s and 80’s, children from North Wales care homes were groomed, brutalised, trafficked and sold by their carers for over twenty years in an international prostitution and pornography racket.

Children were exploited even after they left the care system, into adulthood, and former residents have claimed they were abused by MP’s, businessmen and police officers.

In 1998, the Waterhouse Inquiry concluded that there was no evidence of an organised paedophile ring operating out of North Wales children’s homes.

The National Crime Agency set up Operation Pallial to investigate abuse in North Wales children’s homes in 2012 after the BBC accused the government of a cover-up.

In April 2015, a former professional wrestler, local radio DJ and a children’s home owner appeared in court in Wrexham accused of offences relating to one of the biggest child sex exploitation rings in Britain. For a number of years, Gary Cooke, a former North Wales care home worker ran a local sex shop and supplied children for sex

throughout the North of England and Wales during the 70’s and 80’s.

The seven men – all white – were convicted for their part in the grooming gang including George Phoenix, a taxi driver from Wrexham.

Stephen, who gave evidence to the Waterhouse Inquiry said “Still to this day, there is a coverup. The current investigation by the NCA and the CPS is failing.

There are hundreds who should have been prosecuted and who got away with it. I believe it would have been treated differently if businessmen, police officers and prominent people had not been involved. If the full investigation of the early complaints in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s had been properly investigated by a different police force then we would have had a different outcome. If the truth came out, I think Britain would be devastated – no one would want to believe that this had happened in such a small place. People involved in the exploitation came from all over the UK, from every section of society” Karen Grey, a survivor of the North Wales care home scandal said “The exploitation of children continues today. Nothing will change until everyone wakes up

to the reality that children were, and are still sexually exploited from supposedly safe and secure environments. Agencies are responsible for checking the background of everyone that comes into contact with children in their care. They know children are exploited and they choose to ignore it. Grooming is grooming, it still screws you over, it stays with you for the rest of your life, and it impacts on everyone in your life. Care should be somewhere you feel safe, not somewhere you are scared to go back to. Care should be knowing that no-one will hurt you. ” But across the UK care home continue to be targeted by groomers of all ethnicities.

Izu said “Residential units are still easy targets because those men groom one young person and they can get access to other young people. Often, those young people have other vulnerabilities which make them more susceptible. There are residential units within the private sector. Between 2012 and 2014, nearly 70 per cent of CSE perpetrators in Rotherham are reportedly white British.

Izu said “Our role has not been with working directly with perpetrators and understanding why those patterns have been seen but someone needs to do that. It needs close working with communities to look at what is happening and what are the solutions. There is a need to understand that and communities need to be part of those solutions” If there is a consistent factor, it’s not ethnicity.

For over 100 years, grooming gangs have operated using the same business model.

In 1885, journalist William Stead, uncovered a burgeoning trade in “maidens” supplied - at a price - to rich businessmen and MP’s by bell boys and carriage drivers. Brothel keepers would send gangs around the country to source suitable unsuspecting 13 year old victims. The pioneering reportage in the Pall Mall

Gazette resulted in the “Stead Act” raising the age of consent from 13 to 16.

From Victorian madams, to rent boy rings in North Wales care homes, to the more recent Rotherham sex scandal, the same disturbing pattern emerges.

A network of abusers target vulnerable victims as potential product to be exploited within the sex industry. The ‘product’ is groomed, raped, and then passed around. Drugs and alcohol are administered to create dependency and to make victims more pliable. Many are trafficked from their home towns across the UK and sold in party houses, cheap motels, and from the back of cars. The victims rarely profit from their abuse. Instead, they are threatened, beaten and coerced into what most would call sexual slavery.

Last week, the Old Bailey heard how two young girls in Aylesbury were horrifically exploited by a ruthless sex gang from 2006 – 2012.

Woman A, told the court “Some were taxi drivers. Some were bus drivers. Some were drug

dealers. Some weren’t even from Aylesbury. He used to bring them from anywhere. They used to pay him. He didn’t care...The most I had sex with in one day was five or six.” She added: “In general, I was happy. I could have any food or drink I wanted or anything else I wanted. I never paid for taxis.”

In May, Barnardo’s received £735 000 from the Department for Education to raise awareness of CSE amongst the night economy in 12 areas including Bradford and Rotherham. The campaign is called “In Plain Sight” Izu explained “It’s not assuming all taxi drivers are abusing children - they are not. The work we are doing is about raising awareness so that people can report and stop CSE. So that people are absolutely clear that this is abuse, if you work in the taxi office, or you are a nonabusing taxi operator and you

Izu said “One of the things we are doing is producing leaflets, training, working with licensing people They can choose not to issue a license or withdraw a license. The posters will be up in taxi offices and there will be the non-emergency number for police. They can ring in and report it as a crime.”

When we spoke to taxi drivers across the UK, they said police and the local authorities need to regulate the industry effectively, and to police CSE robustly.

None of the drivers were aware of the “In Plain Sight” campaign.

One company in Bradford said “I’ve had no-one making inquiries about CSE. I don’t think awareness training will do any good but locking perpetrators up might. Either someone is being bad or they’re not, I don’t need training not to abuse anyone. It just sounds like a job’s worth to me” In Bradford, taxi drivers told Asian Sunday that drivers were routinely called to pick up at

risk young girls. Far from being involved in CSE, these drivers were simply doing their job and say they have no control over who calls a taxi.

Taxi drivers who did raise concerns said they were threatened, and their property was damaged. They say they are scared to speak out and even if they did, they don’t have any faith in services to respond effectively.

Its twenty years since Barnardo’s set up the first project to address modern day child sex exploitation in Bradford in 1994. Izu sighs “Twenty years feels like a long time to be working on it. There is much more responsibility being taken by essentially government and local government and the statutory agencies. Obviously, some of that has been prompted

by Rotherham. There is a long way still to go. We’re not there until CSE stops. I don’t know when that will be but I think that is where we should be heading” If the myth of the Asian sex gang is allowed to colour the perception that perpetrators and victims are of one ethnicity, then it’s going to take another 100 years to get there together.

Sikh activist continues hunger strike to free Sikh Political Prisoners.

by Ninder Kaur Sikh activist Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has been on hunger strike for more than seven months now, since January 16, 2015.

The 82- year-old US resident’s decision for going on a hunger strike came about as a form of peaceful protest against illegal and prolonged detention of Sikh Political Prisoners.

Ever since being initiated as a Khalsa in 1972, the former Government teacher has advocated human rights, and spoke out against injustices to Sikhs and other minorities living in India.

Now, despite his deteriorating health, Surat spoke with force about the cause that has led him to a hunger strike.

“The question is not about the release of a few Sikh prisoners, the question is

about the inalienable right of a person to live life without fetters. The question is about the regaining of liberty after you have completed the full term of one’s sentence in prison. The question is about justice, equality and fair play. The question is about parity between the rich and famous and the poor and the underdogs. The prime question is whether after 66 years of the constitution, does it give the Sikhs the rights and privileges due to them as compared to the other majority community?”

Further stipulating his decision, Surat Singh’s son, Ravinderjit Singh, a U.S. citizen, who visited India to look after his father, was held under Indian police custody for two months under charges of being “likely to commit a breach of the peace”. At the time of his arrest, Surat Singh Khalsa was peacefully protesting for release of Sikh political

prisoners. His son was merely accompanying his father at the hospital, when they were both arrested.

Since February 26, he has been forcefully kept at Ludhiana Civil Hospital where he has been subjected to medical procedures. The police have also enforced that the public are not allowed access to Surat.

Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s daughter Sarvarinder Kaur said: “Bapu Ji has faced immense torture in police custody. He has been through the situation where the food pipes were stitched to his forehead so he does not keep removing them.

Now, he remains chained to his hospital bed. Isn’t his violation of his rights?”

Bapu Surat Singh was released on 23rd April after dropping all the charges against him.

that her brother, Ravinderjit Singh, who was released after 61 days, was also brutally beaten in the police custody.

She also said that her father feels that living a free life is every person’s human rights, and these Sikh prisoners should not be deprived of it.

It is for reasons like this that hundreds of Sikhs from across the UK have been protesting outside the Houses of Parliament to seek answers from the British government over the release of what they described as political prisoners in India.

Ravinder Jeet Singh added: “Struggle of my father is entirely peaceful. Along with him, our entire family, and all supporters are seeking the release of political prisoners through a peaceful protest.

We condole violence but will continue to pursue our rights through peaceful and democratic means.”

The police action in India has also sparked protests in America and Canada.

Launching a ‘Sikh Referendum 2020’ campaign, activists claimed that they will get Punjab freed from the Indian government by 2020.

Bike Ride from Edinburgh to London aims to raise funds and awareness for Palestinians

by Staff Reporter Hundred’s of cyclists have begun a bike ride in a bid to raise awareness and funds for conflict torn people of Palestine.

The Big Ride is claimed to be one of the largest mass participation cycling events of its kind in Britain. It will follow a stunning route from Edinburgh to London, covering over 400 miles over nine days. Riders have passed cities Bradford, Sheffield and Barnsley with huge receptions and expect to finish in London on Sunday 9 August.

Former Liberal Democrat MP and passionate Palestine campaigner David Ward was also amongst one of the cyclists. He said “It’s a fantastic organisation and what a great spirit it is riding with these people.

This ride is about two things. Raising money for a very important cause, but more than that it’s about raising awareness. As I have been travelling people have been asking what this ride is about. Now they will go on the internet and look up what we’re doing and they will see the work and support the Palestinians.

first boutique Asian shopping centre set to open this autumn

by Staff Reporter Asian retail has become a serious business over the past few years, with Bazaar’s and Asian shopping centre’s opening up across the country. Now Manchester is set to have its own too.

The bustling and hugely diverse inner city area of Manchester, Cheetham Hill, will see its first high end Asian shopping centre open this Autumn.

The shopping mail which is being built with an investment of £750,000 in a brand new retail area of approximately 20,000 square feet is going to house around 60 retail units in open plan shopping area with free parking for over 500 vehicles. It will open six days a week from 10am to 8pm providing shoppers and opportunity to buy a range of products from the Asian continent ranging from fashion clothing, occasional wear, fashion footwear, jewellery, perfumery,

Manchester Asian Bazaar café, beauty products and haberdashery but to mention a few.

The shopping centre is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors a week into

Cheetham Hill from all over greater Manchester, Lancashire and beyond.

It will be offering some of the best products available in the country in the Asian designer market uplifting the whole area as a place to shop which will have a positive effect on local businesses.

Tariq said “The demand of fashion merging from east to west has brought this new wave of clothing and accessories from that part of the world, I am confident that it will be a place for all to shop eastern and western alike bringing a breath of fresh air to what’s on offer.”

With many big fashion brands queuing to sign up for space, owners are also excited about the in house 60 seater café and a lavishly done out beauty area, offering pampering and dedicated beauty salon treatments.

It is hoped the centre will bring in an investment of over £10 million from retailers and top brands who have taken concessions in the shopping mall making it one of the most desired places for Asian shopping.

The local area will also see a boost of over 200 jobs.

Will our kids be able to get a property of their own?

by Mr. Charter Whenever I see customers who are older, I always think you do not know how lucky you are. This is especially the case, when they start talking about property, and how they faced severe hardship paying their mortgage off.

Although this maybe the case in times of recession, when interest rates went through the roof, but is it really the case that the older generation suffered greater than those in their twenties/thirties now.

Well, a recent survey I saw highlighted that twenty years ago, the average mortgage to buy a home was circa £38, 000, with a deposit of around 5 per cent.

The average circa income of the mortgagee was circa £16, 000 to get onto the ladder; therefore around two or three times income. Now if we fast forward twenty years in time, then to get a mortgage you need a deposit of 25 per cent to get a good rate, a salary of around £38, 000 and an average mortgage of £123, 000. This equates to a mortgage of three to four times income.

This means a significantly higher income multiple. What I also failed to highlight above is the term of the average mortgage has increased from 25 years to 30 years.

So what is fuelling demand in property? Well the answer is

Perhaps the answer is forward planning by us the parents now.

If monthly out goings allow, then a sensible idea could be to put monies away on a monthly basis for our children now. This means when they finally are ready to leave the nest there will be a pot ready to be used as a deposit. So, rather than worrying about the future, little changes now can make a huge difference in the future. I started saving for my children, when they were babies, and although at the beginning I felt the direct debit going out of my accounts, now it is a norm, and all it took was a small push to think about my own affairs, and take my own advice.

Not every name is good. Unfortunately, we rarely think too deeply whether a particular name is a good name.

We evaluate it from the perspective of how attractive it sounds. This isn’t the only criteria that needs to be considered.

The must see musical that has people coming back for more Mrs Bhamra talks Beckham

by Ninder Kaur The multiple award-winning movie turned musical is continuing to score success right through to London’s West End. Adapted by Gurinder Chadha and Paul Mayeda Berges from the 2002 smash hit film of the same name, Bend it Like Beckham: The Musical follows Jess, a talented young football player torn between following in the footsteps of her hero David Beckham, or living up to family expectations of university, career and marriage.

With the success of the the musical reaching great lengths at the Phoenix Theatre in London, Asian Style Magazine caught up with Natasha Jayetileke who plays Mrs Bhamra in the show stopping production.

What can people expect in the musical?

They can expect a production that appeals to everyone. Everyone can identify with it from parents,

to children, females to malesirrespective of their culture and upbringing. You can also expect new music, composed by Howard Goodhall and Kuljit Bhamra who have cocomposed some of it together. They can expect a big company with lots of high energy performances as there are 31 of us that are in the show.

The production appeals to everyone and portrays a multicultural Britain.

Ultimately, it is a feel good show with a beautiful story that you will get swept away in.

How long has it taken to rehearse?

The seed of musical came about 4 years ago. In those four years, Gurinder Chadha has talked about it with producers. There has been three different workshops and this production we started back in March.

We have done a month of previews in London and we opened officially to the public in July. It has been a labour of love but it has been worth it.

Tell us about your character?

When the opportunity to work with Gurinder and our choreographer Aletta Collins came about, it was too good to turn down. I was cast just before Christmas and started rehearsing in March.

I play such a bold, brilliant and big character. Playing Mrs Bhamra is a challenge as I’m a little younger and slimmer than she is.

She is a world away from me as a person and that’s what makes it so good playing her. That’s what I love about doing it every night because I have to mentally and physically become this strong incredible character.

How does this experience compare to other theatre roles you have before?

This is a brand new experience, slightly complicated at times because there are various hurdles to overcome such as script issues and just the fact that you have to put a football match on stage has been complicated. Also, this is the oldest character I have ever played. It is also the first time that I have played a mother to two teenage daughters who are quite strongwilled, feisty and strong minded, so I got to explore that relationship with them which has been challenging and rewarding.

Do you follow football?

It is always the rugby on in our house and cricket. With this year’s world cup it was impossible to not get caught up in excitement of the Lionesses.

We were 100% behind them and bowed to them after every show and when we found out they were out of the tournament, we were completely devastated.

If you could play another character in the musical, who would it be?

That’s a tricky questions because with Mrs Bhamra there is no one like her.

Paul and Gurinder who wrote the script have given me the most fabulous lines and this incredible woman to play. If I had to choose, I would go as far away from my character as Mrs Bhamra and I would play David Beckham. He is the only character in the musical who is a real person, everyone else is interpreting character from the script.

To play Beckham would to be imitating a legend. Tom Millen who plays Beckham interprets him so brilliantly.

The first time I saw him, I was moved to tears.

How was it working with rest of the cast?

We have such a massive cast of 31 of us. We are so diverse in every way.

We came together in March and it has been such an incredible journey so far. We we are striving for the show to be the best it can be and for it to be a great success . When you are working with people six days a week, long

Jamie Campbell Bower (Joe) and Natalie Dew (Jess) hours and you are striving for the same goals then it is difficult to not be a close group. We all get on great really well. When you are on stage with those people every night, you have to trust each other in order to know people will help you when you need help with lines and people are going to be there for you when you are tired, poorly etc.

I am so lucky to be part of a team that get on so well and have so much fun.

People have said how obvious it is we get on, so much energy and friendship is shown on stage and off stage.

What was it like working with Gurinder?

She is an extraordinary individual. I have never met anyone or worked with anyone like here before. She is so brave to have taken on a piece of work like Bend It Like Beckham, which was a formidable piece in her career, and to take that and bravely translate it for the stage, when she has never directed anything for theatre before and to have done it so well is amazing.

Beyond what she does professionally, I have learnt so much more from her personal life. She manages to balance and juggle her family with all the other things she is achieving in her career. I have learnt a lot of that stuff about her and how to make it work with family

life and professional life. I feel grateful to have not only worked with her as a talent, but her as a woman.

What do you enjoy the most about theatre production?

Like Beckham is definitely leading the way and I am sure others will follow.

We will start to see an even more truthful portrayal of the world we are living in.

Can we expect any good songs in the musical?

You can expect non-stop singing. The songs are so memorable. In fact, one time I was running to catch the tube home and I heard a group of girls singing. People leave the theatre humming along to the songs. It is an original score, so the songs have been composed purely for the musical.

Howard and Kuljit have found an incredible fusion of western music and eastern bhangra vibes and have put it together so well. Charles Hart is a legend for writing lyrics for Phantom of the Opera and Aspect of Love, so he knows how to write some really catchy lyrics.

How long have you been in theatre?

I have worked in theatre for ten years.

My parents used to take me and my sister to the theatre a lot. I grew up going to the west end and listening to musical sound tracks, so to be doing it professionally now is a dream come true. To have worked successfully in this field for ten years is a real achievement.

The joy of working on stage as opposed to on camera or on radio is great, as I get to see first hand and hear and feel audience’s reaction to the story you are telling. You get to hear their raucous laughter and see people wiping away a tear and beaming after the show. The adrenalin you get from seeing and hearing that is unbeatable.

Can we expect to see you in more theatre productions?

At the moment I am 100% devoted to Bend It Like Beckham. We do eight shows a week, six days a week. There is very little time to focus on anything else at the moment.

At the end of the year when we finish this contract then we shall see but right now I am dedicated and devoted to this project.

Do you think there should be more theatre productions centred on multiculturalism and diversity?

More and more theatre companies are creating work that is reflecting the country we are living in now. Bend It

Creamy avocado mask for dull lifeless hair Avocados have long been used in beauty treatments for their nourishing and hydrating properties. This homemade avocado hair mask is perfect for those with dry hair, as the avocado contains moisturising properties that revitalise dull, lifeless hair.

How to Make the Creamy Avocado Hair Mask Ingredients: • 1 small ripe avocado • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1/4 cup milk

Cover the mask with a disposable hair cap and leave to penetrate for 20mins.

TO WASH OR NOT TO WASH? It seems simple, right? Take a shower and wash your hair daily. Wrong! Washing your hair may seem like a simple task, but you would be surprised how many are doing it wrong, especially those of you with curly hair.

Washing your hair incorrectly can lead to scalp irritation, dandruff, lice and other scalp issues. Certain hair types and textures only require washing once a week, while others feel best when washed 2-3 times a week.

The no-shampoo method is also referred to as co-washing or conditioner washing. Here are a few basic guidelines on a routine to get healthy, well-behaved waves, curls and coils.

Why No Shampoo?

Most commercial shampoos contain sulfates and surfactants that are too harsh for our hair and tend to rob our hair of moisture.

Curly hair tends to be more porous than straight hair, which makes rinsing out all traces of shampoo virtually impossible and causing frizz. Many conditioners also contain mild surfactants which, paired with a little manual friction, can lift off dirt, debris and excess oil from our scalp and hair.

To make a shampoo free routine work, you should eliminate the use of most silicones (‘cones for short) from your hair care routine since most can only be removed with harsh shampoos. Washing with a conditioner while using them would cause them to quickly build up on the hair, which results in dull, matted hair and poor curl definition.

Try Using sulphate free shampoo’s such as Burt Bee’s More Moisture Baobab Shampoos for Natural hair hydration.

Choosing A Conditioner It is very important to choose a good conditioner if you’re going no shampoo. Here is what you should look for on the label:

Emollients Emollients soften, smooth the hair and give it shine. There are hundreds of them, including such natural emollients as vegetable oils and nut butters. Widely used emollients include glycerides and liposomes.

Proteins Proteins temporarily “repair” the hair and/or protect it. Occasionally proteins will build up on some

people’s hair, especially on healthier hair. In this case, alternate with a protein-free conditioner.

Examples of proteins include silk, soy, wheat, keratin or individual amino acids (components of proteins).

How to Style Curls •

CHOOSE a silicone-free gel, and one that’s clear, to allow the natural shine to come through.

•

DON’T ever brush your hair.

•

DETANGLE when your hair is soaking wet. Use a wide-tooth comb, or just your fingers.

•

NEVER rub your hair with a towel. Instead, gently blot the water using scrunching motions.

•

GENTLY apply product, preferably by scrunching.

•

AIR dry your hair or diffuse partially to avoid frizz.

•

DON’T touch your hair while it’s drying.

Humectants Humectants absorb water and hold in moisture. They are absolutely crucial in a conditioner for curly hair. Panthenol, vegetable glycerin, sorbitol and honey are just a few humectants to look for on the label.

Moisturizers soften and control to curly hair. Amino acids and aloe vera are two great moisturizers.

How to Co-Wash After wetting your hair thoroughly, pour a penny-sized amount of conditioner in your hand. Use the pads of your fingertips, apply to one spot of your scalp and massage well, just as you would with shampoo.

REPEAT until you’ve scrubbed all over.

RINSE all the conditioner off with plenty of warm water, still gently massaging with your fingertips so the friction will dissolve any residue.

POUR more conditioner into your hand, rub your palms together and apply over the length as you normally did in the past.

DETANGLE with your fingers or a very wide-toothed comb.

FOR extra moisturising, clip your hair up and continue with your shower. When you’re done, set the water as cool as is comfortable to you, rinse for just a second or two, and gently squeeze the excess water off.

Although the no shampoo works well for many some people may have to continue using shampoo (hopefully a lot less often than before) because of an oily scalp. This is usually more common in those with wavy hair.

To avoid drying the hair, here’s a recommended way to use shampoo: WET hair under a gentle shower.

TAKE a tablespoon of conditioner, and using your fingers, lightly coat

your hair from the ends to the midshaft. This hair has been around longer than the hair at the roots and needs more lubrication. The conditioner protects the hair by not allowing shampoo to penetrate and dehydrate the shaft.

IF you’re using shampoo, squeeze a half teaspoon (no more) onto your fingertips and apply it gently to the scalp and roots only. Don’t use your nails. Start at the forehead and work around the scalp, then rinse thoroughly.

ADD a half teaspoon of conditioner to your hair and work it through with your fingers. Then rinse quickly, for just a few seconds. Now you’re ready to blot-dry your hair.

How to Clarify Sometimes residue from gels and oils may not rinse off with water and conditioner and result in a little buildup. You might notice right away that your hair feels “gunky,” but other times, your hair just stops responding to the routine. It may begin to tangle easily or curls loose definition and shine. Washing with a clarifying shampoo will refresh them and usually bring the bounce back.

This dish can be enjoyed as an appetizer or as an accompaniment Ingredients 1/2 lb. carrots 1 C. besan (chickpea or garbanzo flour) 1/8 tsp. ajowan or cumin seeds 1/4 tsp. cayenne or 1 sm. hot chile, seeds and veins removed

For the first time ever, this year’s ranking of the World’s Highest-Paid Actors looks outside the U.S. The list features 12 newcomers, five from India alone.

Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, all staples of Indian cinema, also featured in the top 10, with 72-year-old Bachchan and 49-year-old Khan tying at No. 7 with $33.5 million each. ‘Katti Batti’ had makings of a winner from first draft: Producer “Katti Batti” producer Siddharth Roy Kapur is confident that the Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan starrer entertainer will be a winner all the way as he feels it has a strong screenplay, right cast, able director and the encouragement of Aamir Khan.

The film, directed by Nikhil Advani, is releasing on September 18.

“We knew we had the makings of a winner when our team developed the very first draft of the screenplay with the talented writer Anshul Singhal. After that, it was crucial for us to find the right cast to play the unique characters, and to have a director with the sensibility to be able to handle such a unique narrative.

“When we got Imran and Kangana on board, with Nikhil as the captain of the ship, the combination of creative energies on the film couldn’t have been better. We’re really happy with how the film has shaped up,” Kapur, who has produced the film under the UTV Motion Pictures banner, said in a statement.

The script, developed in-house by the studio producing the film, is likely to defy genres due to its character’s progression.

A film -- on new age relationship -- that seems like a romantic comedy at first glance turns into a thriller with a mystery element and a mature love story all at the same time, said a source.

The reactions to the first look and first promo of the film has been positive. Even Aamir, who is Imran’s maternal uncle, after watching the promo, wanted to see the film before release. His reaction, after a private screening was organised by Kapur for him, was very positive and enthusiastic.

Kapur said that “to have Aamir be so appreciate of it is most encouraging”.

“His opinion means a lot and we were thrilled with his response after the screening,” he added.

British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who married actor George Clooney in Venice last year, might replace American real estate magnate Donald Trump as the host of the American version of reality TV show “The Apprentice.”

NBC turned Trump’s “You’re fired!” catchphrase on him after he made remarks about illegal Mexican immigrants being rapists and murderers during a political campaign last month.

Looking for a high-profile woman, who can command as much attention in the boardroom as on the red carpet, the executives believe that Amal fits the bill perfectly, reports dailystar.co.uk.

“We want Amal, although there are a couple of other prominent women in contention, we think she could be a perfect fit if her schedule can be made to dovetail with shooting requirements,” said a source.

Asian Style Magazine caught up with Maz Bonafide to clear up the confusion of the so-called Bonafide separation, the latest single, his surprising dream collaboration and much more.

I heard Bilal Saeed’s album ‘Twelve’, a couple of years ago. I instantly became a fan, because Bilal brought something fresh to the scene. His melodies were really captivating and his lyrics were deep. He is an incredibly talented artist and I wanted to collaborate with him. A couple of weeks after hearing his album we did a few shows in Leicester. We met there and chatted about a possible collaboration. I went to visit him in Pakistan in his Lahore studio and we vibed and that’s how the idea for a collaboration came about.

Tell us about the new single?

How did the idea come about to

What has the response been like for the new single?

The Bonafide duo Maz & Ziggy have teamed up with international star Bilal Saeed for their brand new single ‘Memories’.

He is one half of the Bonafide group that hails from Manchester with years of experience in the music industry.

The response has been phenomenal. Me and Ziggy have been on the music scene since 2008, but this single has received a great response. More people have been checking it out from India and Pakistan.

It’s much more international this time, it’s not just the UK, Europe and America. It’s everywhere.

Even before the video officially released, it was leaked all over the Internet and received thousands of views on YouTube. It has gone out of control. It is currently sitting at Number 1 on the iTunes World Chart and has been for four days in a row. It is doing incredibly well, better than we expected.

What was it like working with Bilal?

Bilal Saeed has composed the lyrics and music to the track.

He is a proper artist, composer, songwriter and an all-round musician. I have worked with a lot of people, but no one has been as talented as Bilal. It was a great experience and we have become really good friends. Hopefully, we will be working together more in the future.

How do you decide on shooting the music videos?

I wanted to shoot it in India or Pakistan. My last video ‘Jaan’ was shot in in Pakistan and it turned out really well. Bilal wanted

it to be shot here in the UK in Manchester. In the end, it was a team decision we all brainstormed and decided that because there were three of us in the song, we wanted three different stories going on in the video with three different models. The video has received a lot of appreciation from the fans.

With the Bonafide videos, we always like to try something different.

We don’t want to stick to the same theme in the videos because there are a lot of videos out there that are similar-cars, girls and guys wearing glasses etc.

How did you decide on the name ‘Bonafide’?

There are two of us Ziggy and myself. We grew up together and have always been a duo. Rather than being called Ziggy and Maz we wanted a name for the band.

A long time ago I wrote some rap lyrics and the word bonafide was in the lyrics. At the time, Ziggy didn’t know what the word bonafide meant. It means genuine/real, so we felt that name represented what we’re all about and a lot of people like it.

What’s it like working with Ziggy? Do you ever argue?

He is the funniest guy I know. He is a walking joke shop. We always end up having a laugh. We have our creative differences, but we have worked out a strategy where we agree to disagree. When you have been working with your friend for

a long time you understand each other better.

Where does your inspiration for your songs come from?

You need to have the passion for music- everything from singing, to performing to composing and writing songs. It requires a lot of hard work and determination. You have to be focused as well. If there are artists coming through, don’t underestimate the power of social networking. Always push yourself and eventually you will start building a following.

You have recently put up a YouTube video to avoid confusion with the current state of Bonafide.

Is the decision for going solo a permanent one?

We have been on the scene for a number of years. We have definitely not split up as you can tell with the new single. Me and Ziggy have different sort of ideas that we want to work on. You can’t always have two vocalists on a song. If you listen to my song Jaan and if you can imagine both of us singing it, it would lose the feel that the song has. Going forward we thought let’s do some solo stuff as well. We are still working together. We have another single coming out.

You have been crowned B4U Music - Artist Of The Month for your single Jaan. What’s it like being a solo star?

My first single did incredibly well. I wanted to do something totally different. I wanted to break the Bonafide boundary and do something with a Bollywood kind of a vibe. When you do your solo stuff, you get to experiment and be yourself. If it doesn’t do great you have no one to answer to and you are more likely to take risks. I have got my solo single coming out soon

I get inspiration at weird sort of times. With my second solo single, I woke up in the middle on the night and had this idea in my head.

Then the melody came into my head and before I knew it I was writing the lyrics right there and then. I worked with some producers from Birmingham called Bloodline. I worked out a beat with them and the song was ready in about a week’s time.

Would you ever go into to the mainstream industry or do you prefer that Bhangra/ RnB fusion?

When we started off we did Hip Hop and RnB. We didn’t come across Asian music until 2008. The Asian market is so big that we ended up touring worldwide. The Asian market is our comfort zone, but in the future it would be nice to be part of the British mainstream industry. We rap and like to sing RnB. We always try to do something different so who knows.

Who is your dream Collaboration?

When you are not pursuing music, what is it that you are doing?

I am also a businessman. That takes up a lot of my time. Any time I get free, I like to spend it with my family. I am also on a Dubsmash craze at the moment. My fans told me to do some and I have had a little go at doing some Bollywood ones.

What’s next for you?

We are touring Canada and America soon. My next big solo single is coming out. I want to spend more time in the studio and cut down more on the touring side of things.

We have some Bollywood stuff going on as well.

On the Asian side Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. I have seen him a live a few times and he is a big talent. In the mainstream, I would say Ed Sheeran. He is a local lad and he is an all-rounded musician.

In the new movie, we see the 47year-old actor play a mixed-martial artist, which was his background before he got into films.

Here is what Bollywood’s leading actor had to say about his latest film release.

The trailer for the film has already had a great response with over 6 million views on YouTube. Tell us a bit about the film and your character? What can fans expect?

Well, it’s about two brothers at war and I play the character of a school teacher who teaches Physics and Chemistry. He used to be Mixed Martial Artist who would fight on the streets for money. Mixed Martial Arts is a very dangerous profession and due to monetary

issues, my character faces he has no choice but to go back to the streets to flight in a professional tournament. Whilst the film is about street fighting, there’s a reason to why the fighting happens in the first place which is the crux of the story.

What was it like working with the cast and crew?

I would just like to tell my fans how much it means to me to make a movie that they like. I really hope all my fans like Brothers. I would also like to tell them that the movie took about one whole year to make, we literally put our blood, sweat and tears into the making. The climax of the movie took about 52 days to

You already have a great physique but was it hard training for this martial arts movie?

Despite being a professional martial artists, I underwent a 6 month intense and gruelling work-out followed by practicing different fighting styles like Judo, Karate, Kyudo, Aikido and other Mixed Martial Arts. But besides all the fighting, there’s also a poignant love story at the heart of the film which we find out later is the main reason why my character goes on to become a street MMA fighter.

Mixed Martial Arts is a dangerous practice that could result in injuries and loss of life. Even during filming we would end up with abdominal injuries and smacks on our face but overall it was important for the role to look realistic and conditioning for us actors to make the movie as real as possible.

Did you face any challenges whilst playing your character?

The most challenging part was fighting like a professional MMA fighter, learning from the best and then trying to catch up with their fighting techniques! But I thoroughly enjoyed it as my teachers are from everywhere around the world - from Brazil, LA, Bangkok and Japan - they are true MMA fighters. It was an honour to learn from the best.

As part of our training programme I had to lose up to 16 Kg’s and

Whilst fighting was a major physical challenge, we also had to face a lot of mental challenge. A very high level of mental attention is required to remember your punches and every move.

Would you every consider cracking Hollywood?

Right now I am happy with what I am doing. But who knows what the future has in store for me?

What do you think about the Bollywood film industry, should they come up with their own ideas because obviously this movie is a remake of the 2011 Hollywood flick ‘Warrior?

I wouldn’t really compare the two movies to be honest as we probably can’t make it better than the original but we gave it all we could. Let’s see what the audience says.

What’s next for you?

My focus is on the release of Brothers. After that I have Singh is Blinng coming out on the 2nd October and then Airlift in January 2016. In Singh is Blinng, I play a larger than life character, something I haven’t done in a couple of years since Rowdy Rathore. My films have been pretty serious with Gabbar, Baby, Special 24. I’m really excited about Airlift as it is a story about Saddam Hussein’s attack on Kuwait.

Synopsis: David (Akshay Kumar) is forced to confront his underlying problems when he finds himself reunited with his estranged family; his father (Jackie Shroff) returns after serving a ten-year prison sentence, and Monty (Sidharth Malhotra) the struggling alcoholic who is active in the world of street fighting, yearns for acceptance and love from his family. Brought together by the arrival of India’s biggest international event in mixed martial arts history, ‘Right to Fight’, the family must face each other, and their demons, to win the ultimate battle, and find redemption.

Supporting ethnic communities For so long in the Asian community we have been crying out for more participation of people from the Asian community playing football. Now however in Tower Hamlets, East London they are looking to change that.

Sporting Bengal which was established in 1996 is a semi-professional football club in East London. The East London side as it continues it’s unprecedented rise up the football leagues has appointed former West Ham player Anwar Uddin as manager for the upcoming season. Uddin is assisted by former West Ham team Steve Clarke.

Bengal’s association with the Bangladesh FA and the fact that they are based within a prominent Bangladeshi community, means that Sporting Bengal do mainly have players of Bengali origin.

The Tower Hamlets outfit’s rise has been on an upward trend since they were formed, they gained semi- professional status in 2003 when they joined the Kent senior league. The East London side can also boast of the fact that they were one of two Asian sides to play in the famous FA cup in 2005.

The achievements of Sporting Bengal is all the more impressive considering the staff at Sporting Bengal don’t do this for financial reward, more for the love of the game.

In 2009 Bengal left the Kent League to join the Essex senior league, which is where they play till this day.

So What Now For

The Women’s Game?

by Ayyaz Malik What comes up must come down they say? Err not in the case of women football. So long so often an after-thought or not taken seriously by them masses, the women’s game in England is really starting to attract attention of a bigger audience.

The women’s world cup which Canada hosted, was watched by millions across the world. What added to the ever increasing publicity of women’s football was the high quality of standard of the games.

Trafford club changing their opinion in regards to fielding a women’s team for the future.

The Reds should look at Chelsea’s women, they managed to win the FA cup at Wembley by beating Notts County in front of a record crowd for a women’s game (30,710). In Chelsea you have a side who can only get better and the signing of one England’s world cup hero’s Fran Kirby, this can only help the Blues progress as a club

even more.

So long so often here in England, I am sure we all have been guilty of getting caught up in the frenzy of hyping the men’s side - and haven’t really thought of the women’s side.

That’s a mistake especially after the Lionesses brilliant showing in Canada.

Those performances in Canada have really helped the women’s game in England really come along. The

Premier League Season Kicks Off

by Ayyaz Malik They say good things come to those who wait... I can vouch for that for a start.

After nearly three long months the saviour of Saturday has returned to save my Saturday nights.

No I am not talking about ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, I am of course talking about the start of the new football Premier League season.

For all of us sports lovers the return of the Premier League makes life just that bit more exciting again. Thirty eight games for twenty teams means that from 8 August till the middle, towards end of May there will be a host of football matches. I for one am not complaining about that, bring on Match Of The Day! Last year’s Premier League

champions Chelsea come in to this season as the team to beat, which is very much the same as last time. The Blues as they’re also known managed to win the league title at a canter. Their nearest challengers last season, then champions Manchester City lost their title with a few games of the season still remaining.

In response to losing their Premier League crown, City who are also known as the Citizens decided to spend big on former Liverpool Raheem Sterling for approximately £49 million. Man City did also sign Fabien Delph from Aston Villa for £8 million, in what could be a good bit of business for the Citizens.

Local neighbours United, who have been bank rolled by a very lucrative £750 million 10 year sponsorship deal with Adidas, have been busy yet again this year.

The Reds have signed five players - but the impending departures of Angel Di Maria and David DeGea could destabilise Man United in terms of moving forward as a team.

The other team in the top four last year was Arsenal,

who also won the FA cup last term. The Gunners who have haven’t won the Premier League for over a decade, have signed Petr Cech from Chelsea which could be a very shrewd piece of business indeed. The problem though for the North London side is that they haven’t signed a striker - and this could cost them dearly.

Last season Chelsea essentially won the premier league due to the fact they signed a world class striker in Diego Costa. Arsenal don’t have a potent striker such as the twenty six year old spaniard. Yes Alexis Sanchez had a brilliant goal scoring season - but the Chilean will need some help in the attacking department.

The chasing pack shall we say such as Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton - by the looks of the way they have conducted their transfer business, will fall further behind the top four. Spurs and Everton have been very quiet in the transfer market and for teams that want to close the gap on the sides above them, I find such a decision very puzzling. Very puzzling indeed.

At the other end of the table I have said the Bournemouth, Watford and Aston Villa will go down. I stick by that and I will tell you why.

Bournemouth who were promoted the Premier League as champions I feel just don’t have enough experience I feel to stay up in the Premier League. Having said that though the Cherries singings of Sylvan Distin and Max Gradel are good signings.

Watford I feel are in the same boat as Bournemouth. The Hornets who do have previous Premier League experience are also lacking players of experience at this level.

Sorry Hornets fans I would love to be proven wrong, the attacking brand of football you play is very good to watch and that would be sad if I see that for only one season.

The last team to go down I think will be Aston Villa, I am sure you thinking that’s probably a typo, sorry Villa fans - but I just think the loss of Christian Benteke will be a loss that Aston Villa will struggle to fill.

To be fair Liverpool have strengthened and with six signings such as Brazilian international Robert Firmino, maybe there is signs for optimism. Having said that I do have doubts over the signings of Christian Bentenke who cost an eye watering £32.5 million and Danny Ings who maybe a bit unproven at this level.

For those of you who are wondering why I didn’t put Norwich, simple reason I just think they won’t go down. The simple reason for me is that the Canaries have players who are experienced at this level - and that will set them in good stead. Not to forget Alex Neil as manager and I believe this young Scot will motivate his troops.

Liverpool’s signing’s will need to hit the ground running or Brendan Rodgers’ job could really be in jeopardy early in the season.

So that’s my break down of the Premier League. I think Chelsea will be champions again (sorry to be boring), Manchester City will finish second..... (Yes, I know boring), Manchester United to finish third and Arsenal fourth.

Other sides such as Swansea, Southampton and Stoke have made some brilliant signings.

Signings such as former Barcelona man Ibrahim Afellay going to Stoke shows a real signal of intent by the Potters. Not to be outdone Southampton’s signing of Jordie Clasie is a master stroke and Swansea’s signing
