Over-50s could see National Insurance hike to fund `fairer' social care system

O

ver-50s could be forced to pay more than £300 a year extra National Insurance to help fund a "fairer" social care system under plans by the Conservatives.

Tory MP Damian Green, who was in charge of drawing up a green paper on social care for England while he was in government, wants the care system to adopt a similar model to the state pension.

Everyone would be entitled to a basic "safety net" of support, but individuals would be encouraged to top up this provision from their own savings or housing wealth.

Mr Green also set out a range of measures aimed at filling a £2.75bn funding gap - including the potential 1% National Insurance hike on the over-50s.

But he suggests it as a "last resort" to bring in £2.4bn.

The former cabinet minister suggests an extra £350m could be generated by taxing the winter fuel allowance, and funding could also be found by divert-

ing savings from elsewhere in government.

On top of the £6bn already provided by the government this would cover the cost of the "universal care entitlement" under Mr Green's model.

This could be boosted by a privately-funded "care supplement", a new form of insurance which could pay for "rooms, better food, more trips, additional entertainment".

In his Fixing the Care Crisis paper, drawn up for the Centre for Policy Studies, Mr Green said: "The crisis in our social care system is one of the most pressing issues our country currently faces.

"It causes acute problems for the wider NHS, with 1.98 million delayed transfers in 2017/18 for those moving out of NHS care. The Conservative Party has an urgent need to show that it has ideas about vital domestic policy issues such as this.

"That why I propose a wholesale change in our approach to social care,

mirroring the state pension system with the introduction of a universal care entitlement and care supplement.

"By combining this new system with an increase in funding we will be able to tackle this most intractable of political dilemmas fairly and responsibly."

Robert Colvile, director of the Centre for Policy Studies, said: "This issue has been politically toxic, but we need a solution that commands consensus.

"I urge politicians from all parties to consider these proposals extremely carefully."

But Labour's shadow chancellor John McDonnell accused the government of punishing older people.

He said: "We want to hear today a clear statement from the government that they will reject this call, protect the triple lock, and follow Labour's call to fund social care properly.

"Anything less than a clear rejection of these plans to punish older people, and the voters will need to draw their own conclusions."

We join forces with the police to support children exposed to domestic abuse

Community unites to show solidarity with Sri Lanka terror attack victims

A new police and council safeguarding initiative called Operation Encompass is giving immediate support for children and young people affected by domestic abuse.

T

he new scheme is now in place in all primary and secondary schools in the borough of Rochdale.

It means that after attending domestic incidents, police officers provide information to the school’s designated safeguarding officer before the start of the next school day. This allows the school to put in place appropriate support, dependent upon the needs and wishes of the child.

This timely early information sharing enables appropriate support to be made for that child so that all interactions, from when the child first arrives at the school gates, are of a positive nature.

Gail Hopper, Director of Children’s Services, welcomed the adoption of the scheme and the support of schools across the borough.

She said: “Research shows that children are negatively affected when domestic abuse takes place in their

Gail Hopper family and we’re committed to helping them at the earliest point. Operation Encompass will help us to do this. As a child, hearing, seeing or knowing about a domestic incident is harrowing enough and children will carry the impact on them into school. Being able to continue with school as normal the day after is a real challenge. With this new scheme, schools will understand what children may have experienced and can

effectively support those children, without judgement.”

Children who experience domestic abuse are negatively impacted by such exposure and it can lead to emotional, physical and psychological harm. Operation Encompass believes that children are victims of domestic abuse in their own right and so it aims to mitigate this harm by enabling immediate support, making a child’s day better support them moving forward.

Kirsten Buggy, Strategic Inspector from Greater Manchester Police, said: “This initiative will ensure Rochdale children receive the tailored support they deserve following exposure to or involvement in such an incident. The rapid provision of support within the school environment means children are better safeguarded against the short, medium and long term effects of domestic abuse.”

A

one minute silence for victims of the Sri Lanka terror attacks brought the local community together in Blackburn Cathedral on Friday 26 April.

People gathered in the Cathedral to pay their respects to the victims of the terror attacks on Easter Sunday.

The Dean of Blackburn Cathedral, the Very Reverend Peter Howell-Jones, led the short service. The Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Councillor Mohammed Khan, and Derek Estill of the Interfaith Forum also spoke at the event.

The service included a period of quiet reflection for everyone present to pay respects to the victims in their own way.

Candles were lit as a symbol of hope in the aftermath of the atrocity.

At 11.30am everyone joined in a minute’s silence to remember the victims.

The Very Reverend Peter Howell-Jones said: “Standing together as a united community here in Blackburn is so important in the midst of such shocking acts of terrorism.

The Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka targeting the country’s minority Christian community are deeply disturbing not only for those in Sri Lanka but for all people of good will across the world.

Such mindless acts of violence will never achieve their hoped for aims simply because love is stronger than death and peace will always be a greater cause than aggression.

Our commitment as a community here at the Cathedral is to pray for those who have been injured and killed, for their families and all who seek to provide care at this troubling time. We also remember those who are striving now to establish peace and harmony once again”.

Councillor Mohammed Khan, Leader of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, added: “We know that our local community appreciates opportunities to come together to show their solidarity with the victims of such horrific and cowardly attacks. It saddens me that it’s less than six weeks since the last time we held a minute’s silence

in the aftermath of the Christchurch shootings in New Zealand.

Every time our community comes together like this we are united in our sorrow and our sympathy for those who have lost their lives in senseless attacks. Our unity is our strength, and we must continue to use that strength to counter hatred in all its forms and reject the actions of a twisted minority. Hate will not win”.

Derek Estill, Secretary of the Interfaith Forum, commented: “Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy go out to all those who have lost loved ones or have been affected by this horrendous and senseless act of barbarity. There is no place in civilised society for such acts of hatred targeting faith communities. All must be able to exist in safety to practice their faith freely and without fear, and it is therefore most important that all faith communities demonstrate a united determination against all terrorist attacks, making it clear that such mindless acts of violence can never and will never succeed”.

Police are investigating an assault on a taxi driver in Little Hulton as a hate crime

hortly after 12.50am on Saturday 6 April 2019 a taxi driver was driving along Kenyon Way when a group of teenagers began throwing stones at the windscreen of his car.

The taxi driver pulled over and approached the group, requesting that they stop throwing stones.

The teenagers started hurling racist abuse before they picked up sticks from the ground and launched an attack on the taxi driver, hitting him across his face, arms and legs.

The victim managed to get to his feet and al-

though the group chased after him, he escaped to the safety of his taxi before driving off.

The victim suffered cuts and bruising to his lower back and face and required hospital treatment.

The seven offenders are described as white teenage boys, and they were wearing dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts.

PC Daniel Marshall, of GMP’s Salford district, said: “Incidents of this nature will never be tolerated in our communities, and we are doing everything we can to find those responsible for this vile attack.

“We have been carrying out a number of lines of enquiries since this incident and we are now appealing for the public’s help.

“If you were in the area at the time and you saw anything then please get in touch with police as soon as possible.

Anyone with any information about the assault should contact police on 0161 856 2836 quoting incident number 1132 of 06/04/19.

A single case of anti-Muslim hatred in the Tory party is one too many - What about dozens?

I

n an article published on 1 April, Conservative Party Chairman, Brandon Lewis, wrote about how “a single case of anti-Muslim hatred in the Tory party is one too many”.

Muslims might be forgiven for thinking Lewis was pulling an April Fools’ Day stunt. Just last week, the Conservative Party further suspended 20 members over Islamophobia, including former advisor Roger Scruton, with some members calling Muslims “muzz rats”, “sub human scum” and even asking : “why have we got them in our country?”.

Cross-party calls – as well as calls from the Muslim community and key organisations such as MCB, MEND, British Muslims for Secular Democracy, even associations affiliated to the party like the Conservative Muslim Forum – for an inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party, continue to fall on politically deaf ears. Furthermore, the Tory Party has shown how they are in denial through their refusal to accept the definition of Islamophobia which has the confidence of over

800 organisations and has been adopted by the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, the Mayors of London and Greater Manchester, as well as councils across the country. Defining and naming a problem is the first step in rooting it out.

During the first Prime Minister’s Questions of April, I asked the Prime Minister about Islamophobia in her party, and her answer fell woefully short.

That marked the third occasion I had raised this issue with the PM, and the third occasion on which she has refused to adopt the APPG British Muslim’s definition of Islamophobia, which we will debate in the House of Commons today/on Thursday.

Until they accept the definition, the problem of Islamophobia within the Tory Party – let alone the rest of society – will continue to be wholly ignored.

I have written to Mr Lewis on numerous occasions, but he has not had the courtesy to even reply. It was even more disappointing to learn that in his article for The Times he did not even mention the word Islamophobia.

I ask again, how can the Tory Party possibly deal with a problem they can’t even name?

It is worrying for a political party to stay silent and sit on the side-lines while its members actively engage in Islamophobic speech and behaviours.

Boris Johnson’s notorious comments a few months ago, where he likened Muslim women to ‘letterboxes’ and ‘bank robbers’ is not just derogatory, it has resulted in Muslim women being abused with those same words while going about their daily business. Regardless of political affiliation, an MP has no right to ask a woman to remove her burqa, so that he can ‘talk to them properly’.

This type of attitude cannot go on unchecked and acts of Islamophobia must be held to account.

This is not a new problem for the Conservative Party. So brazen was the Islamophobic prejudice within the party that, in October 2017, Bob Blackman, Tory MP for Harrow East, hosted anti-Muslim extremist Tapan Ghosh at an event in the House of Commons; the heart of our

democracy. Ghosh is an Indian Hindu-nationalist who has praised the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Burma and stated; “Shame on Rohingya men. Shame on Islam. Seeing this reproduction rate, how can we blame the Myanmar Buddhists for driving them out[?]”. Blackman hosted such a preacher of hatred without any formal repercussions from his party.

To add insult to injury, a reception held in ‘honour’ of Ghosh was attended several Tory Cabinet ministers including then Home Secretary, Amber Rudd.

paign held against Sadiq Khan has yet to be acknowledged. I doubt the letter the PM sent to Sadiq this week, in which she also failed to write the word Islamophobia, will bring any comfort to the Mayor of London that the party has learnt a lesson from its scandalous campaign in 2016.

When such sentiments are openly propagated within the upper echelons of an organisation, we should probably not be surprised by polling data from YouGov in February 2019 which showed that around two in three Conservative supporters believe that there is “a fundamental clash between Islam and the values of British society”.

The conduct of Brandon Lewis and much of the Tory Leadership, including the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary, has been one of continual denial when discussing the issue of Islamophobia; even when it is pointed out by well-respected figures within their own party, such as former Co-Chairwoman, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi as well as members of the Conservative Muslim Forum. There is a consensus within the Muslim community that an independent inquiry is desperately needed, and this plea cannot be ignored.

This denial and headin-the-sand approach can only result in the continued cultivation of Islamophobia which is systemic at every level of the party.

This is not a matter of party-political tit-for-tat.

Political parties have an undeniable duty to root out all forms of bigotry in order to ensure that they truly represent the diverse society in which we live and ensure that every single member of our society feels engaged, protected, respected, and valued.

Therefore, I once again urge the Party Chairman to take concrete steps in tackling Islamophobia. As a fundamental first step, the Conservatives must urgently initiate an inquiry into Islamophobia within the party and adopt the APPG definition of Islamophobia. Moreover, it is essential that this definition is explicitly embedded within the party code of conduct in order to ensure that all transgressions cease to be tolerated. The lack of transparency thus far over this issue reinforces the institutional nature of Islamophobia in the Tory Party.

Brandon Lewis, a single case of Islamophobia in the Tory party really is one too many and it is your responsibility to do something about it.

Moonira's MasterChef mission to cut food waste

H

ow many times have you thrown ‘perfectly good’ food in the bin?

That chicken you just didn’t get around to cooking, the veg that has clearly seen better days and there’s always the odd banana that just didn’t make it into a lunchbox.

You’re not alone.

You may be surprised to know that every year; the average family in the UK throws away around £700 of edible food – enough to pay for a family holiday for some.

Here, in Blackburn with Darwen, shocking figures show that food waste can account for almost half of what we send to landfill – and it costs the Council £100 for every tonne.

So, who better to help inspire change than Blackburn’s MasterChef finalist and passionate foodie – Moonira Hinglotwala?

The mum-of-two shot to fame in 2018 when she wowed judges, John Torode and Greg Wallace, with her Indian fusion cooking.

She’d had a very good teacher – her mother, who she used to watch from a stool in the family kitchen.

As the eldest of five siblings, Moonira would happily pitch in with the cooking – turning her hand to the families’ favourite Gujarati recipes, which had been lovingly passed down from her grandmother.

Today, despite being a trained pharmacist and running three different businesses plus hosting fine dining events, Mooni-

ra stills cooks every day for her family – including husband Riaz, son Ibrahim and daughter Alisha.

And, she’s passionate about reducing food waste.

“It’s such a big problem,” she said.

“And, as well as the huge impact it’s having on our environment, it’s sad to think so much food is wasted when some people don’t have anything at all.”

To cut down on the food she throws away each week, Moonira tries to avoid supermarkets.

“I try my very best to shop local,” she added. “I use shops that sell loose foods.

“Not only can I buy just enough of what I need, I can cut down on plastics and packaging and also support local businesses.”

Moonira, who scooped Woman of the Year at the 2018 Fusion Awards, also plans the meals she’s going to cook and makes sure she buys the right amount of ingredients that she needs.

“If there ever is any left over, we use it for lunches the next day,” she said.

“And, if I make a big batch of curry, then I’ll freeze it in case I’m ill or find that I’m really busy.”

Moonira also chops her fresh herbs and mixes them with oil to freeze them.

“I don’t tend to use the coriander all in one go and it doesn’t always last very long so I’ll make sure I freeze it rather than having to go out and buy more,” she said.

“I also freeze my stocks using an ice cube tray and just pop them out when I need them.”

Sharing her top tips, Moonira added: “People can often feel overwhelmed at the thought of preparing good meals from scratch, but the main thing is to overcome that fear.

“To me, cooking is all about experimenting.

1 May - 14 May 2019 “If you open your fridge, there’ll be ingredients in there that can be thrown together and will create a really good, hearty dish which is full of goodness.

“You don’t need a recipe either – you can rely on your senses – what things look like, what they smell like, what they feel like too – although I do suspect that’s the scientist in me!”

“Be adventurous,” she added. “Cooking fresh foods has so many benefits compared to relying on ready meals.

“Importantly, it can cost very little.

“You can chop veg and throw it into a pot with pasta and it’s a really healthy meal that is delicious and packed full of fibre and vitamins.”

Moonira herself admits that she hasn’t always been confident and it was her son, Ibrahim who really pushed her to apply for MasterChef.

“I’ve always loved the show,” she said. “I used to watch it all the time with my husband and I used to love putting myself in the contestants’ shoes.

“My son was absolutely adamant that I should apply – he even downloaded the application form and pestered me for a week to fill it in.

“I only actually did it to keep him happy; I didn’t really think anything would come of it.”

Back home, husband Riaz gives John and Gregg a run for their money and Moonira says he’s her toughest critic.

“He’s really helped me refine my recipes,” she added. “He doesn’t believe in cutting corners and he can tell straight away if I have.”

Despite recently taking on a new Post Office in her Granville Road pharmacy, Moonira still dreams of one day owning her own restaurant.

“I really enjoy hosting fine dining events,” she said. “I hosted one with Lisa-Goodwin Allen at Northcote and it was a fantastic experience.

“I’d love to open my own res-

taurant – it’s just about finding the right place where I can serve really good, healthy food and provide a great, fine dining experience.”

For now, Moonira is passionate about educating others on food – how they can prepare healthy meals and reduce waste.

“For me it’s about small changes making a big difference,” she added.

“If we all take just a little bit of time to think about the foods we are buying and the meals we are preparing, it could have a really big impact for our families and our futures.”

Moonira’s top tips: Understand food labels Best before: This is about quality and not about food safety. It’ll be ok to eat the food after the ‘best before’ date – it may just not taste its absolute best.

Use-by: This does refer to food safety and the food should not be used after that date. Even if it looks and smells fine, it’s not ok to use!

Plan meals Spend a bit of time before going shopping to plan ahead for meals you’d like to cook.

That way you’ll only buy ingredients you really need – cutting down on waste and cost.

Write a shopping list Keep a notepad and pencil in your kitchen or start a list on your phone so you know exactly what you need.

If you’re dashing out and don’t have time to write a list, why not take a picture of your fridge so you know what you already have?

Shop local Try and use shops that sell loose food so you don’t have to buy a whole packet. Also, avoid putting fresh fruit and veg in plastic bags, if possible.

Use leftovers If you do cook too much, why not use the leftovers for lunch or if you can, freeze them to use at a later date?

he RSE is a growing concern for Muslim Community of Bolton and local community have reached out to local MP David Crausby, Leader of Bolton council Linda Thomas and MEP Sajid Karim during their separate visits to New Madina Masjid Bolton.

Local Imam Allamah Mufti Muhammad Naseerullah Naqshbandi handed over letters and signed petitions to visiting guests on behalf of local community and concerned parents.

MPs have backed changes to relationships and sex education last month. It will mean that, from 2020, relationships and health education will be compulsory in all schools and sex education will be mandatory in all secondaries. The reforms still need approval from the House of Lords.

Sajjad Kareem, Mep has assured and promised that he would raise this matter before Parliament and will give feedback in due Course.

irst Year student Jahnavi Monya is enjoying life studying Aerospace Engineering at UCLan and looking forward to experiencing the new facilities in the EIC. Jahnavi said: “The facilities at UCLan are easily accessible, the workshop is open every day and the technicians are always there to help you. My favourite thing here is that it is so easy to get in touch with your teachers”.

During her time at UCLan, Jahnavi has also benefited from working on live projects led by the Engineering Society: ”I chose to get involved in the Aerospace project - a two year+ project to build a rocket that will go up to a height of 11,000 ft. This has not only broadened my knowledge about rockets but also taught me to work in a team effectively and use the skills gained outside of the rocket project.”

Final Year Aerospace Engineering student Jake Jones chose UCLan as it is his lo-

cal university and offers the chance to study from home.

“I have always been mechanically minded. Engineering offers a deeper understanding and explanations into areas that are often taken for granted. The facilities are excellent and offer a rich environment to allow you to progress with studies.”

The new EIC ensures that students will be involved with innovative live projects based around the needs of industry. Jake said: “The teaching is good, often relating back to active projects the lecturers are re-

searching. Seeing both industry and research links with the material being taught, highlights the relevance, making the subject far more interesting.

“I designed the Juno graphene research aircraft the University has displayed at Farnborough, Birmingham and London Trade shows.

I am also project managing the production of an autonomous UAS for the master’s group project.”

Plans for a new £150m neighbourhood at church wharf given green light

use Development’s £150m proposals to transform the Church Wharf area of Bolton have been approved by the Council’s Planning Committee.

Councillors granted planning permission for the scheme, which would create a new riverside neighbourhood in the heart of Bolton town centre. The approved planning application included a mix of up to 352 homes, a new hotel, commercial offices, and leisure and retail opportunities.

Church Wharf was approved following a period of consultation on the key benefits of the proposal early this year. The neighbourhood will provide new homes to Bolton town centre, create permanent employment opportunities and construction jobs, as well as delivering a significant boost to the local economy.

David Burkinshaw, Muse Developments, said: “This is a huge step forward in delivering a new neighbourhood at Church Wharf. With a focus on high quality design and architecture this gateway site will be transformed into a vibrant new area of the town. The plans will provide around 350 new homes for young people, first-time buyers and families across Bolton and beyond, helping to breathe life into the town centre. We’re opening up access to the river, creating outdoor space for everyone to enjoy and an attractive place for people to live, work and relax.

Trucks full of donated humanitarian aid sent from Bolton to Djibouti

WO huge trucks packed to the brim with humanitarian aid left Bolton on Friday to make their colossal journey over land and sea to the Horns of Africa and some of the world’s most vulnerable people.

The trucks were filled with food and clothing donated by kind-hearted people and organisations across the town and the UK, thanks to a collection campaign by AlKhair Foundation’s (AKF) Bolton branch.

Over the last five weeks

the campaign has gathered more than £100,000 worth of vital supplies such as flour, rice, pasta, cooking oil, baby milk powder and tea bags, along with new clothes.

There was then a mammoth effort to collate and catalogue all the donations before volunteers, from as a far away as Bradford, West Yorkshire, helped to load the trucks.

The donations are now heading thousands of miles to Djibouti, an East African country, wracked by extreme

poverty and a humanitarian crisis, as it deals with refugees streaming from conflicts in neighbouring states.

It is hoped that the trucks will arrive in time for the celebrations of Ramadan.

Aslam Atcha, from AKF’s Bolton branch, said: “The response has been amazing and will help so many people desperately in need.

“The people of Bolton are generous and this appeal saw how much they care about people who are struggling. Their generosity will make a big difference to many lives and we would like to thank them.”

The AKF is a UK-wide Muslim charity which operates humanitarian projects at home and abroad ­— specialising to getting emergency relief to disaster and conflict zones.

It also runs schemes to tackle unemployment, poverty and discrimination in the UK. The donation appeal is the third year running that the foundation has organised such an endeavour, and the second time they have sent supplies to Djibouti.

Zubair Vali, AKF’s national mosque liaison officer, said: “That a local initiative in a town like Bolton will be helping so many people is amazing.”

He added: “The Al-Khair Foundation has set a perfect example that charity begins at home, with tonnes of food collected from the locals including Mosques, supermarkets and other faith groups to benefit the recipients in Africa of Djibouti.

“This effort has been driven by passion uniting local communities to make a difference. We are delighted to have support from MP’s and local Councillors including Yasmin Qureshi and the Mayor of Bolton Elaine Sherrington.”

The decision has been welcomed by Bolton Council. Director of Place, Gerry Brough, added: “We’re one step closer to achieving our vision in our £1.2bn masterplan.

“Church Wharf is fundamental to the regeneration of Bolton town centre. This decision now paves the way for the finer details to be worked through.

“This scheme will unlock an underused piece of land, creating new housing, hundreds of jobs and bringing a mix of people back into the town centre.

“Church Wharf is a key gateway into the town and of incredible strategic importance. Discussions will continue with landowners and businesses to enable this exciting development to go ahead as planned.”

Church Wharf is included in Bolton Council’s target intervention

area within the ambitious Town Centre Strategy. It is a key gateway location to the north-east, which will transform and regenerate the area. The new neighbourhood at Church Wharf will deliver around 350 new homes, and complement the town centre with commercial space, bringing new employment opportunities.

The outline planning application also includes an emphasis on open space and landscape areas, which will conserve the distinctiveness and character of the new neighbourhood.

Initial demolition work is set to take place on the Church Wharf intervention site over the coming weeks.

The Late Club and Club Ice building, which is owned by Bolton Council, will be demolished over a period of 16 weeks by specialists J Freeley Ltd.

Governors want to be top of the class for inclusion in Blackburn with Darwen

nclusion was the subject of the day when governors from schools across Blackburn with Darwen joined together for their annual conference.

Held at Blackburn Central High School, around 90 governors from across the borough joined Local Authority officers and speakers to discuss inclusion in all its forms.

Speakers included Director of Children’s Services at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, Jayne Ivory, Assistant Director of the Council for Disabled Children, Philippa Stobbs, and Head Teacher of Blackburn Central High School, Diane Atkinson.

Ms Stobbs has spent the last 30 years playing an integral role in crafting, challenging and championing education policy through her various roles both in the public and voluntary sector.

She outlined the importance of gover-

nors setting the ethos of the school and the importance of a whole school approach to inclusion.

She was followed by Diane Atkinson who gave a passionate account of her school, her principles and the values that drive her personally as a head teacher to support all children to be their very best.

Throughout the morning governors were asked to think about how inclusive their school is and how they would know?

Speaking after the event, Director for Children’s Services, Jayne Ivory said: “We know that our schools always strive for the best possible outcomes for all learners and that inclusive practice is so important.

“It was helpful to hear the national perspective and also how inclusion plays out at a local level.”

The Rochdale Council of Mosques (RCM) raised a staggering £21,600 for the Rochdale Mayor's Charity Appeal

he RCM Annual Dinner in collaboration with the Al-Mahmood Foundation was held at Rochdale Town Hall on Thursday 18th April. The RCM holds an annual dinner and every year it raises thousands of pounds for good causes. This year it decided to choose the Rochdale Mayor’s Appeal so that the proceeds could benefit local causes. The Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Rochdale Councillor Mohammed Zaman

and Naaira Zaman chose the following beneficiaries: Springhill Hospice, Petrus, Parkinson’s UK, Rochdale Community Partnership, Moor End Trust, the British Heart Foundation and other local charities and groups.

The total raised on the night was £21,600 and this amount will be added to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal and handed to the beneficiaries before the end of their mayoralty next month when each charity will get

an equal amount of the final total.

The event was initially conducted by Dobir Miah (former CEO and now an Advisor to the RCM) followed by comedian Mani Liaquat.

Nasheed artist Amina Sultani recited from the holy Qur’an and later entertained the 300+ crowd with beautiful nasheeds including the Arabic version of hallelujah. A 3 course meal was served in between the entertainment and Auction.

Green light for £35 million residential development

A

£35 million development of 262 new homes in Bolton has been given the go-ahead by councillors.

Full planning permission was granted for the scheme

by Bolton Council’s planning committee on April 18.

Homes will be a mixture of apartments and town houses in the Croal Valley part of the town centre.

The residential scheme, from Bolton-based company Forshaw Land & Property Group Ltd, will be built

on land fronting St Georges Road between Bark Street and Back Bark Street.

Croal Valley is one of Bolton Council’s five intervention areas within its £1.2bn town centre masterplan.

The scheme includes fully equipped gymnasiums, private cinemas, residents’ lounges and a roof terrace.

Managing director of Forshaw, Lyndon Forshaw, said: “I am very pleased with the outcome today.

“This project will set a

“It will provide much needed new homes for people in Bolton and further afield.

Knife crime funding is 'barely a sticking plaster', says Deputy Mayor The Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester has criticised the Home Secretary for breaking promises and abandoning communities as emergency knife crime funding is confirmed.

Greater Manchester Police is set to receive £4m over the next 12 months – considerably less than was promised more than a month ago.

Deputy Mayor Bev Hughes said: “It is extremely disappointing that the Home Secretary has failed to follow through on his promise to provide police with £100m of desperately

needed funding to tackle knife crime.

“The £4m allocated to GMP is far short of what we were led to believe and is barely a sticking plaster for an issue that is causing significant harm to our communities.

“In Greater Manchester, we stand ready to use the additional funding that was promised to make a real difference for our young people and communities, but once again the Government has pulled the rug from under us – a move that will leave our communities feeling aban-

doned.

“That the allocation of funding is based on hospital data is also very shortsighted. Once a victim of knife crime is in the hospital it is too late – we need to act now and act earlier to prevent our young people from carrying knives in the first place.

“Today’s announcement has instilled a complete lack of confidence that this Government is truly taking this issue as seriously as the Home Secretary’s warm words have previously suggested.”

According to the World Health Organisation statistics, one in four people will be affected by mental health disorders in their lifetime – accounting for more than 50 million people in Pakistan.

Yet there are fewer than 400 psychiatrists and 500 psychologists in the country to support them, as well as

widespread stigma attached to speaking openly about personal mental health and wellbeing.

The British Asian Trust has been supporting mental health programmes in Pakistan since 2011 and scaled up this work substantially in 2018. It helps to transform the situation for people with mental health issues in the country, working with local partners to develop services, train specialists, reduce stigma and change public perceptions.

Richard Hawkes, Chief Executive of the British Asian Trust, said: “It is crucial that we act now to tackle the desperately under-reported and under-resourced mental health crisis in Pakistan.

“Since 2018, we have significantly stepped up mental health support in Pakistan.

Springtime tax scams target young and vulnerable, warns HMRC

Y

oung adults who may have less experience of the tax system should be especially vigilant against springtime refund scams, warns HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Scammers are increasingly targeting vulnerable or elderly people and those with less familiarity with the tax system, such as young adults.

During April and May, fraudsters regularly blitz taxpayers with refund scams by email or text pretending to be HMRC. Criminals do this to coincide with legitimate rebates being processed by HMRC. They will encourage people to provide bank details, in exchange for a payment worth hundreds of pounds, on a fake government website to harvest private information and steal money.

HMRC will never ask someone to provide bank details by text or email.

Last Spring alone, HMRC received around 250,000 reports of tax scams — which is nearly 2,500 a day — and requested that over 6,000 phishing websites be deactivated.

Head of Customer Services at HMRC, Angela MacDonald, said: “We are determined to protect honest people from these fraudsters who will stop at nothing to make their phishing scams appear legitimate.

“HMRC is currently shutting down hundreds of phishing sites a month. If you receive one of these emails or texts, don’t respond and report it to HMRC so that more online criminals are stopped in their tracks.”

Head of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith, said: “These criminals will contact victims in many ways including spoofed calls, voicemails and text messages.

“People should spot the signs of fraud and be wary of emails with attachments which might contain viruses designed to obtain personal

or financial information.”

Katy Worobec of Take Five, the national campaign that advises on protection against financial fraud, said: “The offer of a tax rebate might sound tempting, but don’t let the criminals hoodwink you into giving away your details or your cash.

If you’re worried that you might have given away any of your information, then contact your bank straight away.”

When taxpayers file returns to HMRC, they will then legitimately receive a tax calculation as well as an email promoting them to check their Personal Tax Accounts. As many taxpayers file Self Assessment returns, most of HMRC’s contact happens in the months after January.

If you have paid too much tax, HMRC will issue the repayment automatically either direct into your bank account or if you have indicated on your tax return there is no bank account then HMRC will send you a cheque. If you have not paid enough tax, HMRC will tell you how much you owe and how you can pay securely.

Scotland's political parties adopt definition of Islamophobia

cotland’s political parties have all agreed to adopt a formal definition of Islamophobia in a ‘landmark’ bid to tackle prejudice.

The move follows meetings with members of Holyrood’s Cross-Party Group on Tackling Islamophobia and Westminster’s All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims, and places Scotland at the forefront of the fight against hatred.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has signalled the Scottish Government is prepared to adopt the definition, while the SNP, Scottish Conservatives,

Scottish Labour, Scottish Liberal Democrats and coconvener of the Scottish Greens Patrick Harvie have all agreed to adopt the definition.

The definition of Islamophobia was produced by the Westminster APPG after months of consultation.

It classifies discrimination against Muslims as a form of racism, and reads: “Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.”

Anas Sarwar MSP, chair of the Cross-Party Group on Tackling Islamophobia, said:

“This is a landmark moment that will help tackle prejudice in Scotland.

“I’m delighted that every single political party represented in Holyrood has agreed to adopt the definition and put Scotland at the forefront of the fight against hatred.

“This is about more than just a form of words – this sends a powerful signal to those who peddle racism that Scotland will not stand for Islamophobia.

“I now urge the UK Government to adopt the definition so that we can challenge hatred and prejudice wherever it exists across the country.”

BUSINESS & FINANCE UK consumers unfazed by Brexit storm, firms more upbeat: surveys

ritish consumers were unruffled by the latest twists and turns in the country’s Brexit drama and companies have dialled down their worry levels, two surveys published on Tuesday showed.

The GfK consumer confidence index - which was conducted mostly in the run-up to a Brexit deadline that was eventually pushed back, the second such delay since March held steady for a third month at -13 in April.

Spending by Britain’s consumers has helped soften a slowdown in the overall economy, thanks to a combi-

nation of low unemployment, rising wages and modest inflation.

By contrast, employers have displayed more concern and they cut back on investment throughout 2018.

While a business confidence survey published by Lloyds Bank rose for a second month in April - up four points to 14 percent - it was below its early 2019 level and its long-term average.

Lloyds said confidence among manufacturing, construction and services firms improved but fell among retailers.

GfK also pointed to potential

problems ahead in the retail sector with its measure of the willingness of consumers to make major purchases down by two points to -1, its lowest level in five months.

The GfK survey was conducted for the European Commission and polled 2,001 Britons between April 1 and 14. The Lloyds survey polled 1,200 firms between April 1 and 16.

The Bank of England is expected to keep interest rates on hold on Thursday but economists are watching for any hints that about raising borrowing costs more quickly than many investors believe, if Britain can avoid a no-deal Brexit.

Bonus for drivers as Uber seeks $90bn share sale value

T

he company looks to reward loyal drivers worldwide as it prepares to make its stock market debut after a rocky start for Lyft.

Uber is seeking a market value just above $90bn (£70bn) in its planned flotation, according to documents filed with regulators.

The ride hailing firm also announced a one-off bonus for drivers as it prepared to take the company public.

Uber said it planned to offer 180 million shares in its Initial Public Offering (IPO) at a price of between $44 (£34) per share to $50 (£39) per share.

There would be an additional 27 million shares sold by current equity holders, Uber said.

It had been widely reported in US media that Uber had reduced its top valuation from a more lofty $120bn (£93bn) following a lacklustre stock market debut for its largest rival in North America, Lyft.

While Lyft’s shares climbed when trading first began last month, its market value has plummeted

since - down by 22% ahead of Friday’s opening.

In the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Uber revealed the path to profitability would likely be a rocky road for investors.

It reported a net loss of $1bn (£775m) for the first quarter of the year on revenues of roughly $3bn (£2.3bn).

Uber also said PayPal had agreed to purchase $500m (£388m) of stock in a private placement as the pair embark on a venture to create a digital wallet for customers.

It said its shares would trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker name UBER from 10 May, if all proceeded smoothly.

The filing kicks off a 10day roadshow for potential investors to ask questions of senior management.

They are likely to demand answers on subjects ranging from profitability to the rights of drivers following controversy over its treatment of so-called gig economy workers and safety provisions.

Can China's plane-maker take on Boeing and Airbus?

F

or the past decade China, soon to become the world’s largest aviation market, has been developing its own planes as it seeks to loosen Western manufacturers’ grip on the sector.

The planes made by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China - or Comac - have drawn plenty of criticism.

Few in the industry believe Chinese-made jets will rival those of Boeing and Airbus in the near-term.

But analysts say that over time, state-backed Comac part of China’s wider push into high-tech manufacturing - could challenge the established players.

“Do not underestimate

Chinese ability to penetrate markets,” says Shukor Yusof, founder of aviation advisory firm Endau Analytics.

He says the landscape is likely to shift from a European-US manufacturing duopoly to accommodate a third party - “and that’s probably the Chinese”.

So far it has built two jets - the ARJ21 and the C919 and is working with Russia on a third.

Only the 90-seat, ARJ21 jet is in service. However, after suffering from delays, and being plagued with noise and other problems, the aircraft has been roundly rejected as inferior to planes from competitors such as Brazil’s Embraer

and Canada’s Bombardier.

Among the critics is Teal Group aviation analyst Richard Aboulafia.

He says that while the aircraft was touted as proof China would be the next big jet maker, it turned into an “overweight and stunningly obsolete product that has no relevance outside of China’s tiny regional airline sector”.

Comac has bigger ambitions for the C919. Seating up to 168 people, China’s first large passenger jet is designed to compete with Boeing’s 737 Max and Airbus’s A320neo.

Its third test flight was completed in December and first deliveries are scheduled for 2021.

Comac did not respond to UM media request for comment. But data from consultancy Frost & Sullivan shows the firm has received nearly 1,000 commitments for the C919, mostly from Chinese airlines and domestic leasing firms. The order book includes the country’s three major carriers Air China, China Southern and China Eastern.

Still, some remain sceptical that Comac will hit its 2021 target given the problems that surrounded its first plane. Teal Group’s Mr Aboulafia says there is a “serious risk” that by the time the C919 enters service Airbus and Boeing will have far better models on offer.

Business in brief P&O sues UK government over no-deal Brexit ferry case

F

erry firm P&O is taking legal action against the UK government, claiming a rival was unlawfully handed £33m of taxpayers’ money.

Last month, the Department for Transport (DfT) was forced to settle with train operator Eurotunnel, which had challenged the procurement of no-deal Brexit shipping contracts.

As part of the deal, Eurotunnel agreed to make improvements to its terminal.

P&O argues that this put its business at a “competitive disadvantage”.

Eurotunnel’s case came after the DfT awarded contracts worth more than £100m in total to three firms - Brittany Ferries, DFDS and Seaborne Freight.

The companies were to provide extra capacity across the Channel in the event that a no-deal Brexit led to congestion at UK ports.

In February, the DfT was forced to cancel its contract with Seaborne, which had never run a ferry service.

The government was criticised for not having run a full public procurement process, and Eurotunnel subsequently sued, claiming it had never been considered for a contract, despite having previously run a cross-channel ferry service.

China urges UK not to discriminate against Huawei in 5G development

hina on Sunday warned Britain not to discriminate against companies involved in developing the 5G network and to resist pressure from other countries over whether it should work with Huawei Technologies.

Huawei, the world’s biggest telecoms equipment maker, is under intense scrutiny after the United States told allies not to use the company’s technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has denied this.

Sources told Reuters last week Britain’s National Security Council (NSC) had decided to bar Huawei from all core parts of the country’s 5G network and restrict its access to noncore parts.

Writing in the British media, China’s ambassador to Britain Liu Xiaoming defended Huawei as having a good track record on security and said Britain should “make decisions independently and in accordance with their national interests”.

Pilots demand better training if Boeing wants to rebuild trust in 737 MAX

A

merican Airlines pilots have warned that Boeing Co’s draft training proposals for the troubled 737 MAX do not go far enough to address their concerns, according to written comments submitted to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and seen by Reuters.

The comments were made by the Allied Pilots Association (APA), which represents pilots at American Airlines Group Inc, the world’s largest airline and one of the biggest 737 MAX operators in the United States.

Their support is important because Boeing has said pilots’ confidence in the 737 MAX will play a critical role in convincing the public that the aircraft is safe to fly again.

Boeing’s fast-selling 737 MAX was grounded worldwide in March following a fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 on board just five months after a similar crash on a Lion Air flight that killed all 189 passengers and crew.

Now it is readying for regulatory approval a final software update and training package to address an anti-stall system known as MCAS that played a role in both nose-down crashes.

Everything was going fine in the process of my grandmother’s rehabilitation as we had the best doctors and professionals looking after her and fulfilling her needs. My immediate family was there every step of the way helping my grandmother, both mentally and physically. I remember the smile on her face; the moment when she was discharged and given permission to go home.

As a family, and similarly with many other families, we realised the impact that the stroke had: an effect which we nor anyone would ever

imagine. When my grandmother was told by the doctors that everything would be okay; the comfort spread across our family and we arranged for plans to help her.

My independent grandmother who was once strong and resilient was now helpless and dependent on us for everything little thing. We had the equipment specially catered for my grandmother, but problems arose within the first couple of hours.

Those families that are in this situation, looking after loved ones, will realise that there are certain agencies that they have to call to cater for their needs. When my

grandmother fell ill, I too realised this. As I was not medically educated, I relied on professional advice and support; and hence I was contacting 6 agencies simultaneously for one issue alone. I was struggling, many days, on whom to contact for my grandmother’s different needs.

As time passed, I pondered and realised how many other families were also dealing with several agencies. Even in the last few hours of her life, I was dealing with numerous agencies, as one agency, alone, wouldn’t deal with all the problems. Hence, after her death, I took it in

my stride to help other families who are currently in the situation I was in.

Some people don’t realise and can’t comprehend the situation the family is in when a loved one is struck with illness. I myself was struggling and couldn’t understand why they couldn’t have one contact number to deal with all of the problems one may have; finding myself banging my head on a brick wall. What really saddens me is that sometimes families give up, due to the number of different agencies they have to deal with.

Teachers say SATs revision is harming mental health of primary school children Nearly 95 percent are against the controversial Year 2 and Year 6 tests

O

ver 95 percent of Teachers and Teaching Assistants believe that young children are becoming increasingly stressed by SATs, the government tests pupils must take in both Year 2 and Year 6 of primary school.

Among the disturbing responses to the stress of the tests seen frequently by the hundreds of teachers surveyed were children feeling sick, not wanting to come to school, being teary, anxious, having problems sleeping, headaches, bed-wetting, and displaying emotional outbursts, negative changes in behaviour and low self-confidence.

The survey, by lessonplanning and resources experts PlanBee, comes as Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn vows that a Labour government would scrap SATs, saying that young children should not be subjected to ‘extreme pressure testing’.

One teacher who replied to the survey said: ‘I’ve seen a Year 2 child cry during the

test. This was an able child.

I had to tell him how amazing he was and that what he did in the test did not matter because I already knew how good he was.’

Another reported ‘nervous fidgeting during teaching and follow-on work, increased sensitive behaviour, lack of motivation/interest in the curriculum, parents reporting they [the child] didn’t want to come to school’.

The survey shows that teachers are equally opposed to the tests across the country, with few regional variations. But opposition was highest in the North West and lowest in the West of England and the South West.

When asked if Year 2 children should revise for SATs, 75.3% of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that children should be revising at all, with less than 10% of respondents agreeing or

Doctors at NHS Blackburn with Darwen and NHS East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) are encouraging residents to stay safe and well during this period. The fast lasts from dawn to dusk, and this year that means nearly 19 hours of no food or drink passing the lips.

Dr Pervez Muzzafar, a local GP who will himself be fasting said: “Ramadan is a period of spiritual reflection and anyone suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, lung diseases and arthritis or those taking medications, require more planning and discipline to observe the fast.

“Please seek advice about your disease and medications as this is extremely important so that your doses can be assessed.

“It is important to make sure you have two meals a day; sehr and iftar. Also avoid or limit your intake of deep fried food such as pakoras and samosas and high

sugar desserts. You can replace these foods with plenty of fruit, fibre and fluid to keep well hydrated and energetic.”

For many people Ramadan is a good time to consider stopping smoking for good or making permanent changes to their diet long-term to help with healthy eating and weight loss.

The key to maintaining health during Ramadan, especially if it takes place during warm weather, is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water when not fasting. Excessive caffeine should be avoided.

Signs of dehydration to look out for include producing little or no urine, feeling faint, disorientated or confused and having a persistent and severe headache.

If you feel ill during your fast, make sure you seek medical help as soon as possible and do not leave it for too late, especially if you are diabetic or suffer from kidney diseases. If you are in any doubt, please consult your pharmacist or GP to avoid any complications. Have a very happy and healthy Ramadan from both Blackburn with Darwen and East Lancashire CCGs.

The attitude to revision by Year 6 pupils was only slightly less hostile, with 50.8% believing they should not revise. Twenty-six percent said that at this stage children should definitely revise, the remaining 23.3% taking a middle view, suggesting they favour less intensive revision sessions than many schools currently provide.

Very few schools allow

their pupils to undertake SATs with little or no preparation. So should children as young as six be aware that they are revising for an ‘important’ test?

An overwhelming 85.9% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that Year 2 children should not be aware they are revising, compared to 48.1% for Year 6.

Only 6.3% disagreed or strongly disagreed that Year 2 children should not know they are revising, compared to 29.3% for Year 6.

Former teacher Becky Cranham of lesson planners PlanBee, which carried out the survey of 334 teaching professionals , said the results showed that teachers had overwhelmingly negative attitudes towards SATs preparation for young children and were very fearful of its impact on their mental health.

‘One would hope that subjecting children to rigorous, standardised testing would be used to help further the children’s education, as-

sess pupil attainment and improve learning. Alas, this does not seem to be the case.

A whopping 87.5% of our respondents believed that the primary purpose of SATs was to assess school performance.’

Only 2.7% of respondents said the purpose of the tests was to inform setting for Year 3 or Year 7 and just 4.2% believed it was to assess and improve pupil learning.

She added: ‘We know that many children are becoming more stressed about SATs at a time when they should be enjoying the broad and balanced curriculum that Ofsted agrees enables children to achieve most successfully in their school careers.

However, the pressure put on teachers to achieve particular SATs results – and the subsequent pressure teachers then have to put on their pupils ¬– means that in reality many curriculum areas are pushed aside in favour of ensuring children are ready for the tests, particularly in Year 6.

Ms Cranham said that in her experience, parents were swayed by Ofsted rankings rather than SATs results and queried who was actually benefitting from the annual ordeal.

‘Why on earth are we still bothering with SATs,’ she asked.

Put the spring back into your step and get prepared for scrapes, cuts and bruises?

W

ith the weather getting warmer and the days getting longer, this means many children are playing outside. Parents are therefore being advised to be prepared for treating minor injuries.

It’s not uncommon for children to have accidents, particularly on their bikes. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 90% of child cyclist accidents happen between 8.00 to 9.00 a.m. and 3.00 to 6.00 p.m. on weekdays.

Dr Preeti Shukla, Clinical Lead at NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG said: “Self-care is often best for cuts, scrapes and grazes, so it’s a good idea to check your first aid kit to make sure it’s stocked for all eventualities. There’s nothing worse than getting out the first aid kit to discover you’ve run out of plasters or antiseptic wipes.

It doesn’t cost a lot these days to get everything you need for your kit.”

“Your local pharmacy can advise you on treatment for minor injuries and over the counter medicines that are safe for your child. To keep your child is as safe as possible make sure they wear appropriate head gear, and if possible, protect their knees and elbows.”

A typical first aid kit should include: • High factor sunscreen (SPF 50 provides the best protection) – you should apply this before school so that your child is protected from the early morning sun.

• Antiseptic – this can be used to clean cuts before they are dressed (bandaged) and most can treat a range of conditions, including insect stings, ulcers and pimples; alcohol-free antiseptic wipes are useful to clean cuts.

• Tweezers – for taking out splinters; if splinters are

left in, they can cause discomfort and become infected.

• Plasters – a range of sizes, waterproof if possible.

• Sterile dressings – larger injuries should be covered with a sterile dressing to prevent infection until treatment can be given by a health professional.

• Medical tape – this is used to secure dressings and can also be used to tape an injured finger to an uninjured one, creating a makeshift splint.

• Bandages – these can support injured limbs, such as a sprained wrist, and also for applying direct pressure to larger cuts.

• Cooling gel packs or flannels – dip in cold water and use as a compress if your child has a small bump to the head.

• Eyewash solution – this will help wash out grit or dirt from the eyes • Insect bite and nettle rash cream – good for reducing skin irritation if your child is bitten or stung.

• Allergy medicine – your local pharmacy can advise you on the best type of allergy treatment for your child.

• Thermometer – digital thermometers give very accurate readings and are quick and easy to use.

• Coughs, colds and pain relief remedies - paracetamol or ibuprofen are good for relieving discomfort.

However, avoid ibuprofen if your child has asthma, unless advised by your GP. If you’re worried about your child’s injuries and unsure if they need medical help, call NHS111.

This service offers advice 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can advise you where to go if your child has experienced a bang to the head or a bad sprain. All the caller has to do is dial 111 to talk to the NHS.

Asian women talk openly about their cervical screening experiences Around 2,600 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in England each year and around 690 women die from the disease - that's two deaths every day. sIt is estimated that if everyone in England attended screening regularly, 83% of cervical cancer cases could be prevented.

A

ttending your cervical screening appointment when you are invited is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from getting cervical cancer. And that’s why Priyanka Abbi, Jas Dosanjh, Lakshmi Jesani and Chhaya Jones are supporting the ‘Cervical Screening Saves Lives’ campaign - sharing their experiences and encouraging all eligible Asian women to book their appointments as soon as they get their invite letters, and attend.

In a recent survey 9 out of 10 women said they would take a test that could help prevent cancer, however research shows that 1 in 4 women do not attend their

cervical screening - a test that could stop cancer before it starts. We also know that Asian women are even less likely to attend. So why is attendance so low?

Priyanka shares her story: Priyanka Abbi, 33 shares “I had my first screening two years ago. It was over in less than five minutes and wasn’t as uncomfortable as I imagined it would be. The results showed abnormal cells and after further investigations it revealed I had cervical cancer which left me in shock at the time. I wish I had gone for my screening test when I received the invitation. I kept putting it off as I found it difficult to find the time to go.

“I’ve been successfully treated now and would urge all women - especially Asian women, as I know talking about private body parts within our culture can be a taboo – please, please don’t

ignore your cervical screening invite. We should be thankful that this screening programme is available to us - who knows how many of our grandmothers died from cervical cancer because they did not have access to a national screening programme like we have now.”

Chhaya, 42 said “I had an abnormal result after I had been for my cervical screening, however I was successfully treated. I’m so glad I had the test. Since then, I religiously book my appointment when I receive my invitation and just tell myself that even if it is uncomfortable, that five minutes of discomfort could save my life. I’m pleased this campaign is raising awareness of the importance of cervical screening and I hope more Asian women will be encouraged to book an appointment if they missed their last screening test without delay.”

Rami Malek to play Bond villain in franchise's 25th film next year

vengers: Endgame” shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally, reaching a new pinnacle in the blockbuster era that the comic-book studio has come to dominate.

The “Avengers” finale far exceeded even its own gargantuan expectations, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie had been forecast to open between $260 million and $300 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, but moviegoers turned out in such droves that “Endgame” blew past the previous

record of $257.7 million, set last year by “Avengers: Infinity War” when it narrowly surpassed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248 million or about $266 million in inflation adjusted dollars.)

“Endgame” was just as enormous overseas. Worldwide, it obliterated the previous record of $640.5 million, also set by “Infinity War.” (“Infinity War” didn’t open in China, the world’s second largest movie market, until two weeks after its debut.) “Endgame” set a new weekend record in China, too, where it made $330.5 million.

In one fell swoop, “Endgame” has already made

more than movies like “Skyfall,” “Aquaman” and “The Dark Knight Rises” grossed in their entire runs, not accounting for inflation.

Alan Horn, Disney chairman, credited Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, for challenging “notions of what is possible at the movie theater.”

“This weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world,” Horn said in a statement.

Mohsin Abbas Haider joins the cast of web series Baadshah Begum

he story, which revolves around sibling rivalry, will see Mohsin’s character as the most level-headed one of the lot.

‘Thora Jee Le’ director Rafay Rashidi has roped in Mohsin Abbas Haider to join his web series Baadshah Begum.

Speaking to mediaå, the actor revealed that when Rashidi had approached

him for the project, they both had different characters in mind for Mohsin.

“Rafay and I were discussing this project for a while, we were trying to finalise a few things like the characterisation,” said Mohsin. “I was interested in another character but when I read the script of the one that Rafay had pitched to me, I connected to it, so we’re

going with that now.”

Oscar winner Rami Malek will play the international villain who Daniel Craig’s James Bond must battle in the British spy franchise’s 25th film set for release next year, the producers announced on last week.

Malek, 37, drew critical acclaim for his portrayal of Queen front man Freddie Mercury in last year’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“I promise you all I will be making sure that Mr. Bond does not have an easy ride of it,” Malek said in a recorded announcement from New York aired as part of a webcast about the new movie.

In an interview, Malek promised a different type of villain than Bond fans have come to expect.

The film will take “the perspective of what it means to be a villain, and perhaps flipping that on its head in some way, shape or form,” he said.

The still untitled movie known by the working title “Bond 25” will be Craig’s fifth go-around as Britain’s most famous fictional secret agent, and will feature on-location scenes in Jamaica, the producers said in the webcast from the Caribbean island.

After 2015 film “Spectre,” Craig had said he would rather slash his wrists than play Bond again. But in 2017, the actor confirmed he would return to the role one last time.

“A break was what I needed,” Craig told media in Jamaica, where some of the cast members are filming. “I’m incredibly excited just to get going.”

Actors who will reprise their roles

alongside Craig include Ralph Fiennes as M, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny and Ben Whishaw as Q. Joining the cast are Jeffrey Wright, Billy Magnussen and Dali Benssalah.

Producers had already announced that the movie, set for release next April, will be directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the man behind the first season of the U.S. television drama “True Detective.”

Among trademarks of Bond movies are their exotic locations, beginning with Jamaica when the franchise was launched with “Dr. No” in 1962.

“We consider Jamaica Bond’s spiritual home,” said producer Barbara Broccoli.

The new film will be shot in Italy, Norway and London in addition to Jamaica, the producers said.

Musharraf documentary `Insha'Allah Democracy' just bagged a nomination by One World Media

The documentary, which heavily features former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, takes the viewer on the director Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s personal journey of voting in the past Pakistani election as he discovers if “democracy is achievable in a country undergoing political and religious upheaval.” The film, which took

five years to make, also looks at Karachi’s evolution from the 1990s.

Established in 1988, the One World Media Awards recognise the best media coverage of the developing world, reflecting the social, political and cultural life of people around the globe. The Awards highlight the unique role of journalists and filmmakers in bridging the divide between cultures worldwide and raising awareness of underreported issues and stories.

Toyota CH-R The SUV from outer Space!

Just about the sexiest-looking hatchback that’s ever existed, the all-new Mazda 3 is a seductive evolution of the brand’s swoopy styling themes and the car itself is getting rave reviews.

I

thought that IMT button stood for In-flight Mode of Transportation! I expected pressing it to engage the hover jets. In fact IMT actually stands for Intelligent Manual Transmission and basically revmatches the gear changes like racing driver AI. It’s normally sports cars like the Nissan 370Z and the Chevrolet Corvette that do that. And yet here this little 1.2-litre Turbo four-cylinder family crossover with frontwheel drive does it too for its deliciously sweet 6-speed manual gear change.

But the Toyota CH-R doesn’t fly. Why did I expect it to?

Because just look at it! Observe all the angular lines, dramatic curves and mind boggling design details. It looks like it’s popped out of a sci-fi movie. And whilst it’s small, it packs presence like Rocket Raccoon except without the firepower… and the bad attitude… and the fur.

It’s like too halves of different cars somehow harmoniously melded together.

The top appears to be from a coupe, the lower half wants to romp across the rough terrain of an alien planet. The outrageous wing is crazy and the rear doorhandles are very Tron-like. Parts of this car would be at home on a Lamborghini. Quite possibly one of Toyota’s most striking cars. Ever!

Admittedly practicality is more like a compact hatchback than an SUV, and performance is adequate – although plenty for city driving, and enough to give the Traction Control something to do. More impressive is the decent ride and the eager handling. The 1.2 is a surprisingly satisfying and enjoyable car to peddle around. It’s also very easy and manageable, and whilst rear visibility is compromised by the styling, it does come with a reversing camera and is easy

to park due to its compact size.

Jumping into the CVT Automatic 1.8 hybrid, it’s quieter, more refined, but fractionally more cumbersome thanks to the weighty batteries. At £2000 more than the 1.2 at £28k, you’d have to do a lot of miles for it to earn its keep because while it sips fuel at an incredible 74.3mpg, the 1.2 is no gas guzzler either achieving 47.9mpg. The hybrid does reduce emissions from 135 CO2g/km to just 90CO2g/km, so by contrast it’s lighter on your conscience.

It’s simple really, if you actually want to drive the future, take the hybrid; if you want to look like you’re driving the future but really just want to have fun, take the 1.2 manual.

Either way, you should consider a CH-R, it’s family-friendly usability with fabled Toyota reliability and style you normally pay supercar money for.

Aston Martin DBS blows its top!

T

his is the fastest convertible in Aston Martin’s history - the DBS Superleggera Volante based on the supercar maker’s current flagship sports car. Powered by a 5.2-litre V12 delivering 715bhp, it’s capable of 211mph and can accelerate from standstill to 62mph in just 3.6 seconds. It will reach 100mph in just 6.7 seconds.

The name Volante is reserved for convertible versions of Aston Martins. An advanced fabric folding roof incorporates eight layers of insulation materials and takes just 14 seconds to open and 16 to close, which you can do via a key-fob remote. It’s available in eight colours on the outside and six different interior headliners.

There are lots of optional extras and personalisation possibilities of course and prices start at £247,500 with deliveries beginning before the end of the year. A Tuxedo and a Licence to Kill are not included as standard.

The Pajero is dead

A

fter 37 years and with the current fourth generation model on sale since 2006, the ancient SUV, once a cult status symbol of the feudal lords of Pakistan, is to be taken off sale in Japan this August.

The good news is that Mitsubishi will continue the Pajero for other markets for a while longer - and that includes South East Asia. Though not the UK where it’s known as the Shogun - why it’s not called Pajero is something I can’t explain on these pages, but if you follow and DM me on Instagram (#BrownCarGuy) I’ll reveal it!

With over 3 million cars produced and over 640,000 sold in Japan, this venerable old thing seemed like it would go on forever, except that sales have plummeted to just a few hundred per year in Japan. Despite ongoing production for other markets, Mitsubishi says it will not develop the current car which is already 13 years old.

700 final edition cars will be made for Japan, which come with special features and badges including a serial numbered Citizen wristwatch - which somehow seems very appropriate, although maybe it should’ve been a Rado?

There are rumours that it will be replaced by an all-new flagship SUV based on the next generation Nissan Patrol (Nissan now owns Mitsubishi).
