AS EXPECTED, the first day of the campaign period on Tuesday, Feb. 9, for the upcoming national elections was marked by festivities and promises of a better life to millions of Filipinos, which are commonplace in the political landscape of showbiz-obsessed Philippines. In a bid to clinch the presidency in what was perceived to be one of the tightest races in Philippine electoral history, five aspirants seeking the top political post in the country kicked off their 90-day campaign with some big words here and a little entertainment there, in the form of song and dance numbers. DATELINE Trump, Sanders win New Hampshire Primary FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

OVER half a million voters cast ballots on Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the New Hampshire primary, a large turnout across the small Northeastern state. Businessman Donald Trump and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders had decisive victories for the nation’s first primary, paving the way to success for the two outsider party candidates in the election. Trump benefitted from an unusually large field of candidates that split the vote among more traditional politicians, reported the New York Times--including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who came in second. According to exit polling data, Trump ran strongest among Republican voters who were worried about immigration, the fate G8>< 8+

Denver Broncos defeat Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50 Fil-Am Jordan Norwood makes history for longest punt return MILLIONS of Americans tuned in on Sunday, Feb. 7, as the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 to win Super Bowl 50. Playing at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, the Broncos showed off their superior defense, gaining four turnovers — two of which resulted in touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Panthers struggled to ride on the momentum of their nearly undefeated season record. Many analysts noted that Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton, who was named the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP), had an off night, failing to adapt to the Broncos’ rush. He was sacked seven times during the game. During the second quarter of the game, Broncos’ wide receiver Jordan Norwood G8>< 8*

B ATA C C I T Y, I l o c o s Norte—Presidential candidate Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago toyed with the idea that her running mate Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is the best person to succeed her potential position as president “if something happens to her.” “If I am elected as president and something happens to me,

we want somebody young and idealistic, as you have witnessed, to take over the reigns of government,” she said told Ilocanos in jest at the campaign launch at the Imelda Cultural Center. She mentioned the idea three more times later in her speech before the students of Mariano Marcos State University, the biggest campus in the Ilocos region. The statement comes despite her claims that she has controlled

her stage 4 lung cancer. “Alam niyo naman palabiro si Senator Santiago,” Marcos would later explain to reporters at the end of the program at the university. “I think it is just to say na may kumpiyansa siya sakin at maipagpapatuloy ko kung ano man ang kaniyang nasimulan,” he added. Enrile: More Mamasapano incidents to come if Aquino bet gets elected by MARC JAYSON

A HEALTHY-LOOKING Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile has criticized President Benigno Aquino III for “sleeping” in the face of the Mamasapano tragedy. Taking the stage for the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) proclamation rally on Tuesday, Feb. 9, Enrile, one (.$p\Xi$fc[ =`c`g`ef$JXcmX[fiXe :\[i`Zb 8i^l\kX ]Xi i`^_k `j af`e\[ Yp _`j dfk_\i C`c`Xe# of the party’s founders, said pfle^\i j`jk\i BXi\e Xe[ ]Xk_\i DXiZf fe Kl\j[Xp# =\Y% 0 X]k\i k_\ C8LJ; 9fXi[ f] <[lZXk`fe _fefi\[ 8i^l\kX ]fi i\Z\`m`e^ X g\i]\Zk jZfi\ fe _`j 8[mXeZ\[ GcXZ\d\ek ZXcZlclj \oXd% there would be more Mamasapano incidents to come if a 8AGi\jj g_fkf Yp :_i`jk`eX D% Fi`\c

successor of Aquino would be elected president. No such incident, however, would occur under the capable leadership of UNA standard-bearer Jejomar Binay, Enrile said. “Kung palpak ang pangulo na ’yan, marami pang Mamasapano ang mangyayari sa ating bansa. Kung magaling ang inyong timon at hindi tutulog-tulog, nagtatago sa kabarilan, kaklase at mga kaibigan, ay walang

mamatay sa digmaan,” Enrile said. Enrile, who was released from hospital detention after the Supreme Court granted him bail from plunder over the pork barrel scam due to his frail health, raised his hands and shook his fists in might as he told the audience his vow to continue fighting the current president. “Ako’y magiging 92 years old na, ngunit lumalaban pa G8>< 8)
