DATELINE Biden proclaims May as AANHPI Heritage Month FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

PRESIDENT Joe Biden proclaimed May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. During this month, the United States “recognizes the innumerable contributions, vibrant cultures, and rich heritage of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AA and NHPIs),” according to the proclamation. The president credited the community’s “essential role in writing the American story” from serving the country to starting businesses. Biden added that he is “proud” to serve alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, the first person of South Asian descent in the role, and Katherine Tai, the first Asian American U.S. trade representative. Further, the proclamation recognized the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes since the start of the pandemic. In his first year in office, he issued an executive order denouncing the uptick in incidents and signed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act last May 2021, which aims to make hate crime reporting more accessible and increase public outreach in multiple languages. Robredo, who was the only woman in the race, came in second with 14.8 million votes. Boxer turned senator Manny Pacquiao clinched third with 3.6 million, followed by Manila Mayor

SANTOS Inquirer.net

MANILA — The just-concluded elections may prove to be the fastest in transmitting election returns and the highest voter turnout since the country adopted the automated election system in 2010, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Tuesday, May 10. Casquejo said in a press briefing. Out of the 106,174 expected local election returns (ERs), Comelec has received 104,865 on Tuesday. The Comelec also received 911 out of 1,406 overseas ERs. He said the fast transmission can be attributed to the preparations made by the poll body, including the “enhanced terms of reference” to prevent another seven-hour glitch which marred the 2019 midterm polls. The Philippines may also see its highest voter turnout yet, with 80.38 percent already as of Monday, May 9. The highest recorded voter
