MANILA — Does China really have the capacity to shut down the Philippines’ power grid? Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said they will soon find out. The top defense official said they are forming a team from the defense and energy department to address the public concerns and settle the issue once and for all. “We are putting up a team in the (Department of National) Defense and Department of Energy to really find out to prove or disprove the allegations of others that China can shut down our grid anytime they want,” he said in a forum hosted by the Manila Overseas Press Club in Makati on Wednesday, December 4. “Although the NGCP (National Grid Corporation of the Philippines) has strongly denied the allegations, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana

Ressa selected as Princeton University’s 2020 Baccalaureate speaker RAPPLER CEO and Executive Editor Maria Ressa has been chosen as the speaker for Princeton University’s 2020 Baccalaureate ceremony, the university announced this week. The Baccalaureate ceremony is an end-ofyear interfaith service that is one of Princeton’s oldest traditions, with its speaker selected by the Committee on Honorary Degrees and approved by the Board of Trustees. According to the letter of invitation to Ressa, her record of civic leadership makes her “a superb role model for our students, and throughout your career you have demonstrated values of humanity, community engagement and social responsibility that we hope our students will exemplify in their lives.” Ressa graduated from Princeton in 1986 with a degree in English. US authorities probe death of Filipina in Colorado; husband arrested A 27-year-old Bacoleña, who was an alleged victim of domestic violence, died in Fort Lupton, Colorado. The victim was identified as Russcel Recelistino, a human resource management graduate of La Consolacion College in Bacolod City. Recelistino’s husband, Joseph Garza, was taken into police custody. “On Nov. 27, 2019 at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers from the Fort Lupton Police Department, Fort Lupton Fire District and Banner Health Ambulance staff responded to an address in the 1200 block of 3rd Street in response to a medical call on an unresponsive person. Upon arrival officers found an unresponsive adult female. She was transported to the Northern Colorado Medical Center where she later died,” a police press release said. “The cause of death is under investigation,” it added. AMONG 79 participating countries and economies, the Philippines scored the lowest in reading comprehension in the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), according to the results released on Tuesday, December 3. PISA is a worldwide study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that examines students’ knowledge in reading, mathematics, and science. Reading was the main sub-

ject assessed among 15-year old students in the 2018 PISA. The Philippines had an average reading score of 340, more than 200 points below China (555) and more than 100 points less than the OECD average (487). In the Philippines, boys’ and girls’ performances in reading both ranked lowest among PISAparticipating countries. “Reading proficiency is essential for a wide variety of human activities — from following instructions in a manual; to finding out the who, what, when, where, and why of an event; to communicating with others for a
