8CHAN owner James Arthur “Jim Watkins on October 30 filed a cyber libel complaint against its founder Fredrick Brennan for tweeting that Watkins is “going senile on September when he appeared before the United States Congress to give his testimony about 8chan. 8chan is an online messaging board that has been used by anonymous right-wing extremists, misogynists, and conspiracy theorists. Brennan left the website in 2016 after the site strayed away from his initial vision of free speech and completely cut ties with it in 2018. The website has been linked to atrocities like the shooting in El Paso, Texas, which killed 22 and injured 24 others.

THE need for a clear drug war data and the possibility of amending the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 were among the topics Vice President Leni Robredo discussed with United States Embassy officials on Wednesday, November. 13. “Napag-usapan din ang mga kakulangan sa kasalukuyang kampanya at ang mga tulong na maaari pa nilang maibigay para lalong paigtingin ang kampanya laban sa droga (We have talked about the shortcomings of the current campaign and the help

that they could extend to intensify the campaign against drugs), Robredo said in a statement after the meeting. “Kabilang dito ang pagkakaroon ng malinaw na baseline data tungkol sa sitwasyon ng droga sa bansa, pag-aralan ang mga maaaring pag-amyenda sa Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act para tiyaking angkop pa rin ito sa ating kasalukuyang pangangailangan, at ang pagpapalakas ng mga programa para sa drug use prevention at community-based drug rehabilitation (This includes creating a clear baseline data about the drug situation in the country, studying possible amendments to the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs

Act to assure that it is still appropriate for the current needs, and the strengthening of programs for drug use prevention and community-based drug rehabilitation), she added. According to the vice president, the meeting at the Quezon City Reception House was with U.S. agencies International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs ng State Department, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Robredo said she was given a comprehensive briefing about the agencies’ anti-drug programs

THE Duterte administration has supported three out of the last four United Nations resolutions to ensure the safety of journalists amid heightened risks members of the media are facing globally, including the Philippines. A report of Article 19, a British human rights organization with a specific mandate and focus on the defense and promotion of freedom of expression and freedom of information worldwide, titled “Ending Impunity: Acting on UN Standards on the Safety of Journalists, showed the countries that expressed intent to support or co-sponsor UN resolutions that set out commitments for states to ensure the safety of journalists.

THE Sandiganbayan has allowed government lawyers to appeal the dismissal of a forfeiture case against the family of former President Ferdinand Marcos and their cronies. In a November 6-resolution penned by Second Division’s Associate Justice Lorifel Pahimna, the motion for reconsideration – which was previously filed but denied for not complying with certain rules – was approved citing a Supreme Court provision, which states that exceptions may be made if only to ensure the right to due process. The prosecution, composed of lawyers from the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), sought for the relaxation of the rules

Palace: ‘Build, Build, Build’ criticism ‘baseless’ Lorenzana rejects another extension of martial law by AJPRESS MALACAĂ‘ANG on Tuesday, November 12, dismissed Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon’s comment about the government’s P9.2-trillion Build, Build, Build project being a “dismal failure,â€? saying it was “baseless.â€? “Senator Frank, look at the administration you previously belonged, 6 years not a single infrastructure na nagawa (was done),â€? Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said. He also cited DPWH data, saying the administration has completed 9,845 kilometers of roadways, 2,700 bridges, 4,536 flood control projects, 82 evacuation centers and 71,803 classrooms. Earlier that day, Drilon said that only 2 percent of the program has been implemented af-

ter 3 years, noting that only 9 out of 75 Build, Build, Build flagship projects have started construction. “Sad to say the Build, Build, Build project of the government has been a dismal failure, he said. President Rodrigo Duterte’s ambitious “Build, Build, Build project was all about building road networks and modernizing the country’s main gateways, in the hopes of spurring economic growth in the country by providing jobs and boosting spending, especially in the construction sector. Senate Finance Committee chair Sen. Sonny Angara came to the infrastructure program’s defense, saying that the government is expecting to complete 12 projects by next year, 17 more in 2021, and 26 others in 2022.

However, Drilon said “any substantial progress could not be achieved within two years. “The problem of underspending, bureaucracy not being able to respond and problem of ill-advised projects must be threshed out. Unfortunately, when we asked that question on the floor, they could not even answer. If they could not provide us with simple information, you can imagine their capacity to implement the project, he added. Drilon also pointed out that the Commission on Audit earlier cited the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) — both of which are at the helm of Build, Build, Build’s implementation — as the worst performers when it comes to the capacity to disburse.

DEFENSE Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Monday, November 11, said he would no longer support any proposal to extend martial law in Mindanao. But he added that the final decision would be based on the recommendation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police (PNP). “We are waiting for the recommendation of the Armed Forces and the PNP, it will depend on them. But if I will be asked, I will not recommend anymore the extension [of martial law], he told reporters in an interview at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. Mindanao was placed under martial law in 2017 following u PAGE A2 clashes between government

troops and militants affiliated with the Islamic State. Congress extended the implementation of martial law three times. If it will not be extended again, military rule will be lifted at the end of the year. Lorenzana said three years of martial law is too long. “It’s been there for so long. If he Senate or Congress can pass

the [amended] Human Security Act [of 2007], which will give more teeth on our law enforcement [and] that’s a better arrangement than martial law, he added. National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. earlier proposed another extension of martial law in Mindanao. How-
