US to citizens in SEA: Survey: Duterte’s Get anti-polio shots satisfaction rating dips,
WITH the outbreak of polio in the Philippines, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised all its citizens based in or traveling to Southeast Asian countries to be fully vaccinated against the disease. The U.S. embassy in Manila issued the advice after health officials reported a polio outbreak in the Philippines. “Before traveling to the Philippines, adults who completed their routine polio vaccine series as children should receive a single, lifetime adult booster dose of the vaccine,” the embassy said in its health alert. The CDC said the outbreak in the Philippines is caused by the vaccine-derived polio virus (VDPV), which indicates that polio vaccine coverage in the country is low. “Even if you were vaccinated as a child or have been sick with polio before, you may need a booster dose to make sure you are fully protected,” the CDC said. u PAGE A5

THE number of Filipinos satisfied with President Rodrigo Duterte’s performance as chief executive saw a slight dip in the results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released this week. The survey released on Wednesday, October 9, conducted from Sept. 27 to 30, revealed that 78% of adult Filipinos were satisfied with Duterte’s performance. Thirteen percent were dissatisfied while the remaining 9% were undecided. Duterte garnered a net satisfaction rating of “very good” at +65, three points below his record-high “very good” +68 in June 2019. SWS noted that the three-point dip in Duterte’s satisfaction rating was due to the decreases in Balance Luzon and Mindanao, combined with increases in the Visayas and Metro Manila. u PAGE A2

China ignores Duterte’s drug war as Philippines softens stand on South China Sea — report by PATRICIA LOURDES Philstar.com

CHINA ignored President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs while the Philippines has scaled down its opposition against Beijing’s activities in the disputed South China Sea, a London-based think tank reported. The Economist Intelligence Unit, sister company of The Economist newspaper, noted that foreign countries opposing the Philippines’ drug war only have limited leverage over Duterte. While former President Benigno Aquino III took a strong position against China’s expansive
claims in the South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea, Duterte’s foreign policy has been “remarkable.” “The Chinese government, which Mr. Duterte has embraced warmly, has been willing to ignore the war on drugs as the Philippines has scaled down its opposition to construction activity on contested islands in the South China Sea,” the EIU said. The EIU noted that Duterte is bent on pursuing his social policies, such as the crackdown against illegal drugs, over the Philippines’ relations with Western powers, particularly the United States.
Several nations have already expressed concern over Duterte’s drug war due to the “staggering” number of deaths linked to the campaign. A total of 18 nations — including the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, Italy and Mexico — voted in favor of a United Nations Human Rights Council resolution to investigate the Philippines’ drug war. In response to the UNHRC resolution, Duterte directed the suspension of negotiations of all loan and grant agreements with the governments of the countries that backed the Iceland-led resou PAGE A4
