MANILA — Echoing Malacañang’s previous pronouncement, the Philippines’ top diplomat thumbed down the idea of raising the arbitral ruling on the West Philippine Sea row at the United Nations. Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said the Philippines would only “lose” as the UN is dominated by countries “grateful” to China. AFTER decades of enslavement, Fedelina Lugasan can finally breathe. This past July, the 83-year-old Filipina domestic worker was rescued in Northridge, California after more than 30 years of domestic servitude with meager pay and no days off. Born in Leyte, Philippines, Lugasan was 16 years old when she was recruited by the family of Benedicta Cox as the family’s livein housekeeper in Manila. When she was 28 years old, Lugasan was brought to the U.S. to care for Cox’s sister who was sick but little did Lugasan know that she would end up working for the entire family. For the next three decades, Lugasan served the Cox family, cooking, cleaning and caring

MANILA – Ombudsman Samuel Martires has vowed to investigate the roles of Senator Leila de Lima and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas II in the good conduct time allowance (GCTA) mess if he is not satisfied with their replies. The Office of the Ombudsman previously sent out letters to the two, asking them to explain why “heinous crime convicts” were removed from the list of those excluded from Republic Act No. 10592, which counted the GCTA credits of inmates.
