PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is expecting China to be fair on the South China Sea row as he expressed optimism that Filipinos would eventually view Beijing as a “good neighbor.� Duterte, who has been accused of not doing enough to assert the country’s maritime claims, said the Philippines and China have agreed to discuss the dispute some other time as Beijing has to deal with its bilateral relations and issues.
“We will allow them (China) the sufficient period to sort out things and I’m sure that in the end, China will be fair and the equity will be distributed,� the president said. “I cannot talk about—well, elaborate these things now. They are in the blueprint. But in the days to come, we would realize that China, after all, is really a good neighbor,� he added. Report: Hate crimes increase by 17 percent in California Experts attribute the increase to the uprising of white supremacy amid the Trump era ACCORDING to a new report from the California attorney general, reported hate crimes across the state have increased for the third year in a row, jumping by 17 percent in 2017. The 2017 California Criminal Justice Data Report from Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office found that there were 1,093 reported hate crimes in California last year compared to the 982 in 2016. Records show that hate crimes have increased every year since 2014, and that there was a 44 percent jump since then. The FBI defines a hate crime as “a traditional offense like murder, arson or vandalism with an added element of bias� and that bias could be based on “race, reli-

MANILA — Filipinos joined the celebration of France’s triumph in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, taking pride in having a Filipino footballer, reserve goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, reap success with Les Bleus. TWO in three Filipinos are not in favor of the current administration’s moves to change the 1987 Constitution, a Pulse Asia survey released Monday, July 16, revealed. Pulse Asia’s June 2018 National Survey on Charter
Change, taken from June 15 to June 21, showed that 67 percent of Filipinos were against Charter change. Out of that percentage, 37 percent disapproved changing the Constitution now and in the future while 30 percent were not up for it at present but may be open for Charter change in the future.
