Video of elderly woman harassing a Filipino and Mexican-American family goes viral, Daly City mayor responds

AN elderly white woman last week harassed a Filipino- and Mexican-American family, going on a racist, xenophobic rant while waiting behind the family in the line of a Daly City, California grocery store. Last week Filipina-American Jenny Vela posted a video on Instagram in which an older white woman mockingly addresses the multicultural family saying, “Look at all the groceries they’re buying. Steal our food, steal our money, steal our jobs.” A man not seen in the video, presumably Vela’s husband, Alfred — who is MexicanAmerican — defends the family by saying,

Ombudsman indicts former Pres. Aquino over DAP scam by JULIUS

N. LEONEN Inquirer.net

OMBUDSMAN Conchita Carpio Morales has indicted former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for usurpation of legislative powers over the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). In a statement on Wednesday, June 20, the Office of the Ombudsman said Morales found probable cause to file a case against Aquino before the Sandiganbayan. Morales ordered the indictment of Aquino for violation of Article 239 of the Revised Penal Code. However, the indictment may still be subjected to a motion for reconsideration. Sought for comment on Aquino’s indictment, The Office of the Ombudsman has indicted former President Benigno Aquino III in connection with the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a Program of his government. The indictment was ordered after acting on the motions for reconsideration filed by complainant-movants Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, Renato Reyes, Benjamin Valbuena, Dante LA Jimenez, Mae Paner, Antonio Flores, Gloria Arellano and Bonifacio Carmona, Jr. The Ombudsman said the indictment stemmed from the unlawful issuance of National Budget Circular (NBC) No. 541 to implement the DAP involving P72 billion public funds. “A re-evaluation of the case establishes that the individual actions of respondent Aquino and respondent-movant Abad showed a joint purpose and design to encroach on the powers of Congress by expanding the meaning of savings to fund programs, activities and projects under the DAP,” the Ombudsman said, quoting a resolution issued on May 22, 2018.

Trump reverses highly criticized practice in his ‘zero-tolerance policy’ AFTER weeks of heart-rendering coverage of children being separated from their parents at the border, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday, June 20 to remove that practice from standard border protection procedure. Trump previously argued that he had no authority to stop the separations, but after receiving intense rebuke from Americans across the political spectrum --- as well as international religious and political figures -- he officially reversed the practice which his own administration implemented earlier this year as a part of a “zero-tolerance” immigration policy. Per the executive order, the Trump administration orders border patrol agents to

MANILA — The country’s so-called independent foreign policy amounts to a hedging strategy where the Philippines maximizes returns from different world powers while minimizing long-term risks, an international security analyst said on Wednesday, June 20. Writing for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, international security analyst Peter Chalf said that the country’s independent foreign policy is in pursuit of a “geopolitical sweet spot,” where the Philippines can maximize its returns from many different powers while offsetting long-term risks. “He (Duterte) has pursued two parallel courses of ac-

THE decision to hold the 120th Philippine Independence Day celebration at the Trump International Hotel was defended by the Philippine embassy in Washington on Tuesday, June 19. In a statement, the embassy said, “Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez deemed it fitting to hold the Philippine Embassy’s 120th Philippine IndePhilippine Ambassador to the U.S. pendence Day Jose Manuel Romualdez Photo by Boyet Loverita celebration at the Trump International Hotel, an elegant and historic venue in Washington, D.C.” The event, according to the embassy, provided an opportunity to celebrate both this milestone year for the Philippines and its close friendship with the United States. “The Philippine Embassy will continue to deepen its ties with the U.S. As a foreign mission, the Philippine Embassy does not get involved in the domestic issues of the host country,” it said. U.S. Senator Robert “Bob” Menendez, however, questioned this and wrote a letter to Ambassador Jose Manuel “Babe” Romual-

PH hopes for full Dengvaxia refund as study confirms its effects by RAE

ANN VARONA AJPress

A NEW study confirmed that the world’s first dengue vaccine, which was given to over 800,000 school children in the Philippines, poses risks of hospitalization and severe sickness in those who have not been infected by the virus before getting vaccinated. Now, the Philippine government hopes the

new study will help amplify its demand for a full refund from the controversial Dengvaxia maker Sanofi Pasteur. “Sanofi has rejected the DOH’s [Department of Health’s] request for a full refund multiple times now, refusing to pay the Philippine government back for the vaccines already used. But all Dengvaxia has given is grief and anger to us Filipinos who unfortunately served as guinea pigs,” said House Committee on Ap-

propriations chair, Karlo Nograles, on Monday, June 18. “The Philippines through the DOH has more leverage than ever to seek the refund,” Nograles added. The study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) last week confirmed a WHO recommendation made in April that Sanofi’s dengue vaccine should not be
