MANILA — With China’s plan to hire thousands of English teachers from the Philippines, President Duterte said Beijing is preparing its citizens to learn English in preparation for the country’s eventual “takeover of the U.S.” as an economic leader. Duterte, who has been criticized for leaning towards China, made the remark during the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the Commission on Higher Education and several state universities and colleges for the implementation of the Free Tertiary Education Act.
AG Sessions restricts domestic abuse, gang violence victims from gaining asylum
Fake news is a serious issue of concern for a majority of Filipinos, survey finds
A MEASURE that would divide California into three separate states was qualified on Tuesday, June 12 to appear on the ballot for the November general election, the CA Secretary of State’s office confirmed. Proposed by Silicon Valley venture capitalist, Tim Draper, the initiative — informally called “Cal 3” — will break the state into California, Northern California and Southern California, a threat to end California’s
ATTORNEY General Jeff Sessions this week has left thousands of domestic abuse and gang violence victims at a near dead end by invalidating asylum protections they relied on for entering the United States, describing the acts of violence as “private violence.” A Salvadoran woman who was sexually and physically abused by her husband for 15 years had her asylum grant overturned by Sessions, a fate that many with similar experiences now fear will be theirs. Of the 711,000 cases being brought before U.S. immigration courts, at least 230,000 involve asylum petitions from individuals coming from Mexico and Central America, according to a Reuters analysis of data from the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Most of the cases have to do with domestic or gang violence. Under asylum law in which claims are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, individ-
AS internet usage rises among adults in the Philippines, a large majority of Filipinos are viewing the issue of fake news and false information as a serious concern, revealed a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey released this week. Looking at results from two surveys conducted from December 8-16, 2017, and March 23-27, 2018, SWS found that when averaged, 42 percent of respondents were internet users — a slight uptick from 41 percent in June 2017, but a large one throughout the years. “The annual average proportion of Internet users nationwide was nine percent when SWS first surveyed it in 2006. It rose to 11 percent in 2017 and increased steadily to 38 percent in 2017,” said SWS about its published survey on Monday, June 11.

“But on the other side of things, China is going to import many teachers beginning next year and they would need… so many thousands. They want to learn English. That is in preparation for the eventual takeover of the United States. The U.S. owes so much, they did not pay. So they are all mortgaged,” the President said in apparent reference to the U.S. government’s debt to China, estimated at $1.19 trillion as of March 2018. “So, they are preparing to talk in English so that they can communicate… In truth, the U.S. has not been paying its debts,” said Duterte. Aside from China’s hiring of Filipino teachers, the President said the ageing countries
are also looking at hiring Filipino nurses and caregivers. In one of his speeches, Duterte earlier remarked that the Philippines would become a province of China in the wake of criticisms over his non-confrontational stance on territorial disputes in the South China Sea. On Thursday, June 14 he expressed hope that the Philippines “in God’s time” will move forward economically, even cracking a joke about hiring foreign workers for the country’s service sector when that time comes.
He added, “Maybe in the fullness of God’s time, when we will also be rich, we would import Europeans, French and Spanish people and make them our boy” – a term that refers to house or errand boys. “That’s what they did to us, isn’t it? We were subjugated for 400 years. Why should we not also give the courtesy in return? Let us look forward to a brighter future for our nation. We are uplifting the lives of Filipinos, I’ve said, and just keeping our fingers crossed,” the [resident said. ■
