Congress proclaims Marcos, Duterte by Jeannette I. andrade, JulIe M. aurelIo Inquirer.net
MANILA — Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was proclaimed as the country’s 17th president on May 25, Wednesday, 36 years and three months since his family hastily evacuated Malacañang Palace after the fall of his father’s dictatorship, bringing both the hope of unity to the nation and the fears of a return to strongman rule. His running mate, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte also was proclaimed vice president. Marcos, 64, and Duterte, 43, won the May 9 elections, in a stunning landslide victory, with more
than double the number of votes received by their closest rivals. The official canvassing by Congress, acting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), was completed after just a little over 15 hours with 98.84 percent, or 171 out of 173 certificates of canvass (COCs), containing a total of 53,815,484 votes. First called to the podium of the plenary hall of the House Representatives to be proclaimed winner was Duterte, who was without a family member to accompany her as she received the certificate of her victory at the polls from Senate President Vicente Sotto III, one of her opponents in the vice

He was accompanied to the rostrum by his wife Liza, son Simon, and sisters Irene and Sen. Imee Marcos. His frail 92-year-old mother, former first lady Imelda Marcos, was assisted up the stage by his cousin, House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez. Some in the audience chanted “BBM! BBM,” the shortcut for his nickname, Bongbong Marcos, which became popular during the campaign.

MANILA — Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez will not be the country’s next secretary for the Department of Foreign Affairs as he would still be the country’s envoy to its treaty ally. Romualdez himself dispelled rumors that he would be the country’s next top diplomat while on CNN Philippines’ “The Source” on Thursday, May 26. “I’ve been told that so many times, sometimes, I’m beginning to believe it, but to be very honest about it… President-elect Marcos and I had a meeting and he told me that he was very pleased with how effective I have been in Washington DC,” Romualdez said. “He told me that he would like me to continue what I’ve been doing in Washington, with the relationship that we’ve been able to establish there.” There have been talks that Romualdez would be the next DFA secretary as his cousin, Marcos Jr.,

AMONG other things, the month of May is an important month for two observances: celebrating Asian American heritage and spreading mental health awareness. In the United States, Asian Pacific American History Month (APAHM) and Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated in May to continue the difficult, but necessary conversations on both of these urgent subjects. As anybody who is lucky alive today understands, the last two years have given the world enough grief, tragedy, loss, and frustration to last a lifetime. A recent CDC report on a survey of high school students revealed that 55.1% describe
suffering emotional abuse, 44.2% reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness and 9% attempted suicide. Moreover, young women and girls as well as LGBTQ+ youth — across all racial backgrounds — are more likely to attempt suicide. According to Angela Vasquez, a policy director for mental health at The Children’s Partnership, about half of all children “who are severely impaired with a major depressive episode did not receive” any form of mental health treatment. Depression, as most mood disorders, thrives on stealth and concealment; the more you hide and avoid the problem, the bigger it becomes.

MANILA — President Duterte again expressed his gratitude to the Filipino people for electing him president, even as he apologized for his “shortcomings.” “In a few days I’ll be out. All that I did, for me, that’s it. The best that my efforts can really achieve. If that is still not enough, I’m sorry I can’t do anything more,” the President said in Filipino and English during the inauguration of the new building of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in Pasig City on Monday, May 23. “The things that I failed
to do, mostly not because of negligence or I have shortcomings but the time really – six years – would not be enough to finish all the projects,” he added. Duterte also took the opportunity to thank the media, particularly television networks, for their coverage of his presidency. “To all of you, including TV networks, I would not mention, thank you. And your help in my journey in the six years, you gave me the honor to be the president of the Philippines. Thank you very much,” he said. In a speech during the launching of the digital innovation efforts of the
