HONOLULU — A Filipino American bartender from Ewa Beach celebrated his 38th birthday after waking up from a medically induced coma for coronavirus. Coby Torda had COVID-19 symptoms on March 9 and was hospitalized March 21 at Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center. Torda later developed secondary pneumonia from his breathing tube. After waking up from a medically induced coma for six weeks, he has been able to breathe without the ventilator for as long as 11 hours, his family said. Torda’s mother, Peggy Torda-Saballa, who also contracted the virus but has recovered at home, told KHON2 that “He was near-fatal when we got him to

The latest report from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, May 20 also announced four new deaths: two in Europe and two in the Middle East/Africa coverage area. This raised the death toll to 284. Nine Filipinos abroad recovered from the disease, raising the total number of recoveries to 858.

FLAG carrier Philippine Airlines recently announced that it will be assisting stranded American citizens in the country by mounting two separate flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco this week. The “user-pay” flight leaving for LA is scheduled on May 21 with two domestic sweeper flights — one from Cebu and one from Davao, according to the United States Embassy in Manila. Meanwhile, the one leaving for San

Francisco is scheduled on May 26 with eight domestic sweeper flights from Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Siargao, and Tagbilaran.
