Duterte: Vote buying an ‘integral part’ of PH polls by RITCHEL

MENDIOLA AJPress

ACCORDING to President Rodrigo Duterte, vote buying is an “integral” part of elections in the Philippines, with the practice being fairly normal among Filipinos. He made the statement on Monday, May 13, after casting his vote in his hometown of Davao City. “Well, ganito iyan (it’s like

this), if they are caught, they should be prosecuted to the full length of the law. Now, the practice of buying votes has been an integral part of an election in the Philippines,” he said. “‘Yang pagboto, lahat yan. Walang hindi nagbibili ng boto dito, maniwala ka... Ituro mo kung sino ang hindi nagbili ng boto (Everybody is guilty of vote buying here. Believe me. Tell me who here never bought votes),” he added.

Under the Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines, vote buying is defined as: “Any person who gives, offers or promises money or anything of value, gives or promises any office or employment, franchise or grant, public or private, or makes or offers to make an expenditure, directly or indirectly, or cause an expenditure to be made to any person, association, corporation, entity, or commu- THE PRESIDENT’S VOTE. THE Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) and the California Domestic Workers Coalition have unveiled the California Homecare Agency Labor Violations Tip Line, a hotline that allows caregivers, consumers and agencies in California to anonymously report labor violations and unethical behaviors of homecare agencies. “We have to regulate the homecare industry to ensure that workers have safe workplaces and receive fair pay. It is essential for us to provide various means for them to be able to assert their rights and protect themselves from abusive employers,” Aquilina Soriano-Versoza, executive director of PWC, said at a press conference on Partial and unofficial 2019 midterm election results from PPCRV-Inquirer Transparency Server as of 07:01 a.m. on May 15, Friday, May 10 at PWC. 2019. Technical issues, election violations mar 2019 Philippine elections by AJPRESS

ANY hopes for a smooth sailing election process were dashed as various issues involving vote-counting machines (VCMs) marred the 2019 midterm elections on Monday, May 13. Of the 85,000 VCMs stationed in precincts across the Philippines, 400 to 600 experienced glitches, according to Commission President Donald Trump on Monday, May 13 signed executive

on Elections (Comelec) spokesman James Jimenez. He noted that the problem had tripled compared to the presidential election in 2016, which only had a total of 188 machines encounter technical difficulties. “In the overall scheme of things, that is a small number but compared to 2016, the figure is jarring,” he admitted in a press
