DATELINE Trump calls 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard troops to border FROM THE AJPRESS NEWS TEAM ACROSS AMERICA

PRESIDENT Donald Trump said Thursday, April 5 that he’s looking to send anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 National Guard troops to the southern U.S.-Mexico border in a bid to ramp up security. The president spoke to reporters on Air Force One Thursday following an event in West Virginia, saying that the administration will “probably keep them or a large portion of them” there until the completion of a border wall. He said the administration is also “looking” at the costs. Trump officially signed on Wednesday, April 4, a proclamation to deploy National Guard troops to assist Border Patrol agents along the southwest border, in an effort to impede illegal immigration. “The situation at the border has now reached a point of crisis. The lawlessness that continues at our southern border is fun-

THE city of Carson, California made a move Tuesday, April 3 to make the city the first to recognize Filipino labor leader Larry Itliong as a holiday. “It is my honor and pleasure to move that Carson become the first city to recognize Larry Itliong as a holiday, and that the recognition be extended to all the employees here in Carson,” said Carson Mayor Albert Robles. Prior to the vote, Carson community mem-

has filed a complaint against the closure. “It is within their right to seek redress from courts, but we also emphasize that what we are doing will not only benefit the island but the whole country as well. This will also be for them,” Leones added. The six-month closure was proposed by the DENR, Department of the Interior and Local

PHILIPPINE President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday, April 5, dropped fresh hints that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is out to eliminate him, as he continued blasting the United States for being critical of his anti-illegal drugs campaign. Speaking before a group of farmers and fishermen at Malacañang, Duterte said people should look into the CIA should anything bad happens to him. “At least kung pumutok ‘yang eroplano ko o pumutok ‘yang roadside bomb (if my airplane explodes or a roadside bomb goes off), maybe you can ask the CIA,” Duterte said. This was not the first time Duterte accused the U.S. agency of plotting against him. In September 2016, the president disclosed that he has received reports of CIA’s alleged plans to “kill” him. In October last year, he also pointed to CIA as the one to

PNP to comply with SC order on drug war by DANA

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) will comply with the Supreme Court’s (SC) directive to submit a report on individuals killed during the implementation of the government’s anti-illegal drugs campaign. Malacañang made the assurance on Wednesday, April 4, insisting the government has nothing to hide. “Yes of course [they will fol-

low], if that’s the final order of the SC all agencies of the government bound by that order are supposed to comply and follow,” Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra told reporters. The SC earlier directed the PNP to provide data on more than 4,000 suspects killed under the drug war, rejecting an appeal filed by the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG). “The Office of the Solicitor General has argued that there

are certain security concerns that need to be addressed in connection with this matter but since the Supreme Court itself has apparently made a final order for the production of these particular documents by this law enforcement agency of the government, I guess we have no other alternative except to comply,” Guevarra said. Guevarra expressed confidence that the SC resolution will not have an adverse effect on the implementation on the

campaign. He, however, raised concern on the possibility that witnesses’ security might be put at stake. “We cannot see any effect because our law enforcement agencies are not hiding anything behind these documents, except for the security of possible witnesses and so on and so forth,” he said. as new Philippine DOJ chief Duterte accepts Aguirre’s resignation

SENIOR Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra has been named as the new head of the Department of Justice (DOJ), replacing former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II. According to Palace Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr., Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte signed Guevarra’s ad interim appointment on Thursday, April 6, hours after announcing his acceptance of Aguirre’s resignation.

“Guevarra has proved his competence and intellect when it comes to laws. Secretary Guevarra also has integrity,” Roque told reporters. Guevarra, for his part, said he felt “overwhelmed” with Duterte’s confidence in him. “The president seldom sees me, yet he entrusts such a sensitive position to me. I’m overwhelmed with such confi-
