TWENTY SIX governors, as well as several former Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) government officials, have denounced the disturbing rise in assaults and harassment toward the AAPI community in the United States. Governors from 26 states and territories on March 26 issued a joint statement calling for solidarity with AAPIs and condemning the recent string of brutal racism against the community, particularly elderly Asians. “As governors, we take pride in protecting the people of our states and territories,” the governors’ letter read, acknowledging the long history of anti-Asian social norms and policy in the U.S. “From the Chinese Exclusion Act to the incarceration of Japanese Americans in World War II to the mistreatments of Muslims and Sikhs after 9/11, this year is part of a history of racism against the Asian American community,” the letter continued.

MENDIOLA AJPress

EXTENDING the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) over Metro Manila and its nearby provinces is an “absolute last resort,” according to Malacañang. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Tuesday, March 30, made the statement, noting that the InterAgency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases will meet on Saturday, April 3 to decide whether the ECQ in the National Capital Region and other areas will be extended or lifted. “Sa mga nagtatanong naman po kung maextend pa ang ECQ, pinagiisipan po itong mabuti ng inyong IATF at sa Sabado po, Black Saturday, ay meron kami muling pagpupulong para po isapinal kung ano ang mangyayari. Pero sinabi ko na po ito, another week or two weeks of [ECQ] yan po ay magiging absolute last resort (To those asking if the ECQ will be extended, the IATF is carefully thinking

Foreign parents of Filipino citizens can now enter PH with valid visas by RITCHEL

MENDIOLA AJPress

FOREIGN parents of Filipino citizens who have valid visas and are traveling with them may now enter the Philippines. The country’s Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Monday, March 29, announced the new guideline pursuant to the latest resolution issued by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID). However, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente stressed that foreign parents must be traveling with their Filipino chil-

dren to be able to enter the country. “If they are traveling alone, they will not be allowed entry even if they hold valid visas as the rules provide that they must be traveling with their Philippine spouse or children,” he said in a statement. Previously, only the foreign spouses and children of Filipinos who were traveling with them and those who hold valid visas were exempted from the travel ban, which the government imposed on all foreign nationals from March 22 to April 20. Foremer President Joseph Estrada Morente also clarified that foreign seafarers arriving via the seaports are not prohib-

MORE groups in Los Angeles County are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. As of Friday, March 26, gardeners and landscapers, housekeepers, and private child caretakers in LA County who work at least 20 hours a week can now start booking their appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine.

Additionally, LA-based flight crews and airline employees who live in the city can now register for a vaccine appointment. The announcement comes as California is set to drastically expand vaccine eligibility in April. Starting on April 1, everyone 50 years or old will be able to get vaccinated and starting on April 15, individuals 16 years and older will be granted vaccine access.

LA County — where more than 1.2 million residents have been Covid-positive and more than 23,000 people have died from the virus — is set to receive another 380,000 doses this week. Additionally, tens of thousands of doses will be sent to pharmacies and local health care centers. “Our calculations suggest if we’re able to get up to 750,000 doses delivered a week, we

should be able to work through the adult population certainly by the end of June,” said Dr. Paul Simon, L.A. County Department of Public Health chief science officer. “That’s a goal contingent upon us getting a larger supply of vaccine.” Simon added that people who will soon become eligible for the vaccine should be patient when booking appointments as
