STARTING this week, approximately 4.4 million more Californians are eligible to get vaccinated against the coronavirus. As of Monday, March 15, individuals who are 16 to 64 years old with disabilities and certain high-risk health conditions can sign up to receive their vaccine. Conditions include: • Cancer, current with weakened immune system • Chronic kidney disease, stage 4 or above • Chronic pulmonary disease, oxygen dependent • Down syndrome • Solid organ transplant, leading to a weakened immune system • Pregnancy

CA launches rent relief program for tenants, landlords CALIFORNIA has announced the launch of a statewide COVID-19 rent relief program, intended to help income-eligible households pay rent and utilities, both for arrears and future payment. Supported by the Federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, the CA COVID19 Rent Relief provides financial assistance to income-qualified tenants experiencing housing instability and provides rent reimbursement to landlords for unpaid rent accrued between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021. Landlords who participate in the CA COVID-19 Rent Relief program can get reimbursed for 80% of an eligible renter’s unpaid rent between April 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, if they agree to waive the remaining 20% of unpaid rent during that specific time period. Requirements include: 1) All payments must be used to satisfy the renter’s unpaid rent for the period between April 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021; 2) renters must take

LOS Angeles County this week gave the green light for several business and activities to operate indoors, including restaurants, gyms and movie theaters, as it moved into the less restrictive red tier un-
der California’s reopening plan. As of Monday, March 15 — a year after the county’s first COVID-19 related health order — restaurants could reopen indoors at 25% maximum capacity and with additional restrictions, such as one household per table with a limit of six diners and eight-feet distancing between tables.
The county Department of Public Health urges restaurant employees to have additional masking protection, such as N95 masks, KN95 masks, or double masks, in addition to the required face shield. These changes come as LA County, along with

POPE Francis on Sunday, March 14 led a Holy Mass commemorating the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines. Held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Mass was attended by several members of the Filipino Church including Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, the pope’s vicar for Rome. “Dear brothers and sisters, 500 years have passed since the Christian message first arrived in the Philippines. You received the joy of the gospel, the good news that God so loved us that He gave His Son for us. And this joy is evident in your people. We see it in your eyes, in your songs and in your prayers,” Pope Francis said in his Homily. He also noted that Filipino women in Rome are “smugglers” of faith, saying that they “sow the faith” wherever CELEBRATION. NEARLY 3,800 hate incidents have been self-reported by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) — including approximately 8% coming from Filipinos — across the country since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new data from Stop AAPI Hate. Stop AAPI Hate, a national coalition that tracks anti-Asian American discrimination, reported on Tuesday, March 16 that from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021, it has received 3,795 firsthand incidents of racism
and discrimination from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Of that number, 503 incidents took place in the first two months of 2021 alone. The reporting center previously announced that it received 2,808 incidents from March to December 2020, but that number has increased to 3,292 based on accounts submitted at a later date. Chinese are the largest ethnic group (42.2%) that say they’ve experienced hate, followed by Koreans (14.8%), Vietnamese (8.5%) and Filipinos (7.9%), Stop AAPI Individuals hold up signs denouncing the rise in anti-Asian violence during a rally at the Hate found.
