PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has told the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to shoot him if he becomes a dictator or stays in power
beyond his term expiration in 2022. The president made the remark in his speech during an army base visit on Monday, January 22, in Compostela Valley province. “Kapag ako sumobra sa aking termino, isang araw lang (If I extend my term of office, even for a day), I am
now asking the [AFP] and the PNP not to allow me or anybody else to mess up with the Constitution,” Duterte said. The president further stressed that it is both the military and the police’s “solemn duty” to “protect the Constitution and the people.”
“Kaya ako ‘pag sumobra, gusto kong mag-diktador, barilin ninyo ako. Hindi ako nagbobola (If I overstay and wanted to become a dictator, shoot me, I am not joking),” he added. Duterte had repeatedly said in the past that he has no intention of going

Filipina accused of passport fraud in Las Vegas A 41-year-old Filipina may face up to 20 years in jail if proven guilty after she was arrested for allegedly forging IDs and passports in Las Vegas. THE Philippine government has formally rejected assistance projects amounting to at least P380 million or 6.1 million euros being offered by the European Union (EU), according to EU Ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen. Jessen made the confirmation on Wednesday, January 24, during the weekly Kapihan sa Manila Bay news forum. According to him, the Philippine government has rejected the Trade Related Technical Assistance Project Phase Four (TRTA-4) “at the end of the past year.” “It was formalized in the sense that we had, for example, the TRTA, a document that actually had to be signed by the end of the year. And that has been returned to us unsigned,” the EU ambassador told reporters. He said the Philippine government raised objections to areas of “rule of law,” “democracy,” and “human

7 Fil-Am medical missionaries dead in Cebu after car crash A WEEKEND getaway in Cebu quickly turned into a tragedy after seven Filipino-American medical missionaries were killed in a car crash in the nearby town of Alegria last weekend. On Saturday, January 20, a group of 10 physicians and nurses from the United States were in the town of Oslob, located 73 miles south of Cebu City. The group was on its way to Kawasan Falls in Badian that morning when the driver of their rented Toyota Grandia van reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The car then crashed into a roadside
mahogany tree between 11 a.m. and noon, less than 10 miles away from the destination. According to local officials, five passengers were killed on the spot while the other five passengers were transported to hospitals; two died on the way to the hospital. Three passengers sustained severe injuries while the driver — identified as 24-year-old Gilbert dela Cruz — survived with minor injuries. Among those killed included Dr. Nunilo Rubio, 74, of Chicago; Aurora M. Gagni, 63, a registered nurse from
Orland Park, Ill.; husband and wife Reynaldo and Diane Pascual of White Plains, NY; Joseph and Juvela Huang and Berniti Rojas, according to Inquirer. The three passengers treated for injuries were Dr. Rubio’s wife Dr. Elenita Rubio and husband and wife Fred and Nora Tsai of Chicago. The traveling group were a part of 48 volunteers of an annual medical mission organized by the Philippine Medical Association of Chicago (PMAC) and it’s Women’s Auxiliary

A FILIPINO-American freelance photojournalist topped a photo competition in the U.S. recently with her heart-tugging stills on Rohingya refugees. Cheryl Diaz Meyer dominated the competition, “2018 Eyes of History” under the category “International News” by the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA). Meyer’s photo showing refugee Anwara Nurhassan taking a boat from Bangladesh to a refugee camp on October 3, 2017, won first place.
Photos of a Rohingya boy crying to his father and of a refugee carrying his wife to a rickshaw finished second and third respectively. Two of Meyer’s photos consisting of two men carrying a 60-yearold refugee to the southernmost part of Bangladesh and an 8-yearold boy with burn wounds in his face while at a refugee camp were also cited. All five photos were posted on Meyer’s website, which has a complete portofolio of photos of the Rohingya crisis. On her Twitter and Instagram accounts, Meyer expressed her Cheryl Diaz Meyer
