Introduction & Welcome from the Artistic Directors:

Ashuelot Concerts promotes live, classical music as a powerful force for good in the community. Using concerts, school performances, talks & outreach, Ashuelot Concertsseekstoinspirelearning, achievement and well-being in our local community while growing an enthusiastic audience for classical music

Welcome to Ashuelot Concerts’ third International Concert Series. We are honored to have you with us to experience the magic of live chamber music together. If this is your first time at one of our events, you are especially welcome. We hope that after the performance, you will leave sharing our passion for the incredible music featured in this year’s program.

Since the beginning of time, human beings have gathered to share in the joy of live music. It is a “cultural universal”, a critically important part of what it means to be human. Music is one of very few customs that brings people together without any potential for controversy or conflict. Today, our world is increasingly dominated by synthetic digital products and information. In contrast, Ashuelot Concerts celebrates the analogue experience, the wonderful vibrations made by some of the finest instruments in the world. Live music offers the perfect antidote, reminding us that nothing synthetic or artificial can transcend the beauty, meaningful connections and shared experiences of real-life.

Each year, Ashuelot Concerts brings world-famous chamber musicians to our beautiful rural region. We select music that is guaranteed to move and excite and we constantly strive to reach more people. Over the next year, we will give 40 performances in schools, sharing the incredible experience of live chamber music with thousands of local children. They are always eager to know exactly how we do what we do with our instruments. In answer, we explain the power that determination, commitment and daily practice has in our own lives. These children have unlimited possibilities ahead of them. Each time we perform in a school, we give the performance extra energy and commitment, knowing that the music could inspire a child to try that little bit harder in class that day.

If you enjoy your experience at the concert today, please talk to your friends about our program. There are so many people who have yet to discover how incredibly positive a live classical music experience can be. We would love to meet them and welcome them into our growing community at a future concert.

Schumann Quartet

Eric Schumann, Ken Schumann - Violin

Veit Hertenstein - Viola, Mark Schumann - Cello

The Schumann Quartet has reached a stage where anything is possible, because it has dispensed with certainties. This also has consequences for audiences, which from one concert to the next have to be prepared for all eventualities: “A work really develops only in a live performance,” the quartet says. “That is 'the real thing', because we ourselves never know what will happen. On the stage, all imitation disappears, and you automatically become honest with yourself. Then you can create a bond with the audience – communicate with it in music.” Their live performance will be expanded in the near future with partners such as Andreas Ottensamer, Kit Armstrong, Anna-Lucia Richter, Sabine Meyer, Sharon Kam and Alexey Stadler.

Highlights of the 2024/2025 season include: the Beethoven string quartet cycle, performed at the renowned Suntory Hall in Tokyo in June 2025; an extensive quartet tour of NorthAmerica; and the resumption with Kit Armstrong of the "Expedition Mozart" project, which will make guest appearances at Flagey in Brussels, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, among others. The quartet will also perform again at Wigmore Hall London, Gewandhaus Leipzig and ConcertgebouwAmsterdam, to name but a few.

Its album “Intermezzo” (2018 | Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Schumann und Reimann with AnnaLucia Richter) has been hailed enthusiastically both at home and abroad and received the award “Opus Klassik“ in the category quintet. In 2020 the quartet has expanded its discography with "Fragment" and his examination of one of the masters of the string quartet: Franz Schubert. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the radio, the quartet will dedicate itself to a very special project: An album of pieces around and from 1923. Together with the Bavarian Radio, they will record works byAlban Berg, Leos Janacek, Ernst Krenek andAaron Copland.

The three brothers Mark, Erik and Ken Schumann have been playing together since their earliest childhood – meanwhile violist Veit Hertenstein completes the quartet. The four musicians enjoy the way they communicate without words. Although the individual personalities clearly manifest themselves, a common space arises in every musical work in a process of spiritual metamorphosis. The quartet's openness and curiosity may be partly the result of the formative influence exerted on it by teachers such as Eberhard Feltz, the Alban Berg Quartet, or partners such as Menahem Pressler.

Awards, CD releases – it is always tempting to speculate on what factors have led to many

people viewing the Schumann Quartet as one of the best in the world. But the four musicians themselves regard these stages more as encounters, as a confirmation of the path they have taken. “We really want to take things to extremes, to see how far the excitement and our spontaneity as a group take us,” says Ken Schumann, the middle of the three Schumann brothers. They charmingly sidestep any attempt to categorise their sound, approach or style, and let the concerts speak for themselves.

And the critics approve: “Fire and energy. The Schumann Quartet plays staggeringly well [...] without doubt one of the very best formations among today’s abundance of quartets, [...] with sparkling virtuosity and a willingness to astonish” (Harald Eggebrecht in Suddeutsche Zeitung).*

Erik Schumann plays on a violin by Joseph Guarneri filius Andrea from 1690, kindly made available to him by the Guadagnini Foundation Stuttgart. Ken Schumann plays an old Italian violin from the mid-18th century, kindly made available to him privately. Veit Hertenstein plays a viola made by the Amati brothers in 1616. Mark Schumann plays a cello by Giovanni & Francesco Grancino from 1680, generously loaned to him by MERITO Sit Vienna.

Sitkovetsky Trio

Alexander Sitkovetsky - Violin

Isang Enders - Cello

Wu Qian - Piano

Alexander Sitkovetsky (violin) and Wu Qian (piano) were joined recently by GermanKorean cellist Isang Enders to continue their journey of successful appearances. Their thoughtful and committed approach have brought the ensemble critical acclaim and invitations to renowned concert halls around the world, such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Palais des Beaux Arts, Musee du Louvre, l’Auditori Barcelona, Wigmore Hall and Lincoln Center New York to name but a few.

The 2020/21 season will see the trio return to Lincoln Center New York, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Alte Oper Frankfurt and Frederiksvaerk Festival in Denmark, as well as making their debuts at TelAviv Museum of ModernArt and the chamber music series in Bern and Basel. 2024-25 Schools Program

Ashuelot Concerts offers every local school the chance to have the live experience you hear today performed in classrooms. Before each concert weekend, our international artists visit local schools to perform for children and share stories of their personal journeys to success. Often, the children are sitting only a few feet away from famous instruments made by Stradivari orAmati over 400 years ago.

Each school program lasts for approximately 45 minutes and includes three performances of selected repertoire from the concert program.Alongside the music, each presentation follows a theme. For example:

• How daily habits can change what we think we are capable of: Exploring how each of us is a product of our daily habits (both good and bad) and how small changes can lead to big gains over time.

• Is something difficult in class, or is it just new? Exploring how the brain reacts negatively to something unfamiliar and how after a few days it can feel so much easier with the right learning techniques.

• Talent does not exist! Exploring how there is no scientific evidence that explains extraordinary ability but there are many characteristics that high achievers of all disciplines have in common.

• What music tells us about how to communicate: Exploring how to utilize the four basic elements of music - pitch, rhythm, dynamics and articulation - to improve our speaking and listening skills and maybe even make the world a kinder place.

• Attention and Focus: Using the music as an example, we explore how our brains can only attend to one sense and one thing at any one time.

Music is the Answer!

With your support, Ashuelot Concerts has grown to become a destination series with an international reputation in record time. Our program is now regularly attracting some of the world’s leading musicians to our beautiful region. These incredible performers will be sharing their gifts with thousands of local children through our schools program, as well as with our growing concert audience.

Each new season offers Ashuelot Concerts the opportunity to further our mission: Live music has a unique power to grab our collective attention away from negative digital distractions. Music brings us together and unites us around something viscerally beautiful. Thousands of people in our audience will have the opportunity to forge new connections and friendships around a shared love of live music. At a time when disagreements seem ready to tear our community apart, live music offers an important path to healing.

For children, our program demonstrates the value of real-life experiences in a unique way. Local children as young as five now have the opportunity to see, hear and feel live music, upclose, performed by some of the world’s leading concert musicians on a regular basis. After feeling the thrilling energy of a live performance and hearing famous musicians explain their own journey to success, there are many more reasons to dream big and try that little bit harder in class that day.

Ashuelot Concerts’ program is only made possible through the generous contributions of our donors and sponsors. Today, we are asking for your support as we work to secure the future of our young organization. As you experience the music, we respectfully ask that you consider donating generously to our program. We also encourage you to tell your friends about our program and bring them to a concert soon.

Our program can only succeed with your help, we remain a young organization in need of support. Please consider donating monthly or making a one-time gift by scanning the code, using the enclosed gift envelope or visiting our website at ashuelotconcerts.org/donate

Every donation dollar will be invested in using live classical chamber music as a force for good in this community.

THANK YOU!

2024-25 Objectives

1. To provide an affordable, live classical music experience that is usually reserved for major metropolitan areas, to our rural community.

2. To grow the numbers of people attending live classical concerts in Southwest New Hampshire.

3. To provide high-quality arts access to the economically & geographically disenfranchised people in our community.

4. To lower the average age of those attending by encouraging children and families to attend.

5. To enthuse our audience to such an extent, that they return with their friends at future concerts.

Ashuelot Concerts' goal is to provide joy, inspiration and unity through our program. Our aim is very simple: to uplift and inspire as many people as possible through the experience of live classical music. We bring together diverse audiences of young and old people from different backgrounds, with varied political beliefs and religions, we gather in beautiful venues and together we share the unique experience of beautiful music, performed live at the highest level.

After such an experience, there is suddenly more reason to be optimistic; where there is division, the concert-setting offers the perfect opportunity to talk only about the musical experience, leaving any differences at the door.

Live Classical Music has so much to offer, especially when it involves artists at the very top of the profession. In recent times division and political polarization has increased, mental health has deteriorated significantly, and social-media and screen usage has increased - degrading our collective ability to focus, make real connections and enjoy real-life experiences. Live music has a unique and scientifically proven ability to help mitigate these issues in our community as we gradually recover from the strains of the last few years.

Introducing Ashuelot Concerts’ Artist Circle

Ashuelot Concerts is looking for ways to secure our medium term future. As so many leading artists require contracts to be signed 12-24 months ahead of each concert date, we are looking to form a core group of supporters who will help us to secure leading artists for future seasons. For a small monthly contribution, you can help Ashuelot Concerts secure the participation of some of the world’s leading musicians to our beautiful region for years to come.

More Ways to Support Ashuelot Concerts this Season

Please consider supporting this year’s program, we welcome gifts of any size, but below are some examples of how larger or recurring gifts can help us bring more live music to our community.

One-time gifts:

Larger gifts allow our young organization to invest in future programs with confidence:

Sponsor a Concert - $5,000

Sponsor one of our world-class chamber music concerts in the Monadnock Region. Your name will appear in the concert program and on any livestream broadcast and our website.

Sponsor an Artist - $4,000

Help support bringing an International Artist to perform in two concerts & four schools in our series.

Enable a Schools Concert- $2,500

Sponsor one of our performances in a local school. Your name will appear prominently in our concert program and on our website. Your financial support will also be acknowledged in press releases in the week of the performance.

Sponsor a Piano Move - $2,000

Help safely move our concert Steinway between our three beautiful venues.

Support a Concert Venue- $1,000

Help with the production of our concerts by supporting the rental of one concert venue.

Recurring donations

A small, monthly donation can make a big difference to Ashuelot Concerts over the next 12 months:

$75 per month

Help us continue to provide free tickets for school age children at our concerts. Each concert sees a growing number of high school children attending.

$50 per month

Helps us provide live music to one class of children. Join some of our local teachers in supporting Ashuelot Concerts at this level.

$25 per month

Help us maintain our beautiful concert Steinway. Each concert requires at least two tunings and several hours of technical work to keep our piano in perfect condition.

$10 per month

Help with Ashuelot Concerts marketing efforts. Central to our mission is reaching people who would never usually attend a classical music concert.

Ashuelot Concerts’ Mission was made possible thanks to the generosity of these wonderful supporters: (gifts
