WINELIST No. 59 Dear Mailing List Member, It’s been a lively few months for Ashton Hills and we have much to report! Firstly, it’s been nice to have a (nearly) full complement of wines to offer for a change. Although the 2018 Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay has been sold out for a while, to have the 2019 Estate Riesling, 2016 Vintage Rose, 2013 Sparkling Shiraz and all three Pinot Noir available has been a rare treat! We should also mention the Reserve Pinot Noir Magnum, gift boxed and extremely limited. By the time this newsletter lands, at least one of these wines will likely be gone. We also have a new face around the estate. Liam Van Pelt worked with Stephen over the 2019 vintage, where he began to learn the intricacies of winemaking Ashton Hills style from the master, between regular visits from the cheese and Burgundy fairy.
You will see Liam around the estate most days with his loyal sidekick Clive, a handsome brown and white border collie. Finally, it is with sadness that we farewell our Cellar Door Manager, Jo Thompson who has been a friendly, welcoming face at the winery for the past few years. We thank Jo for her commitment to life at Ashton Hills and wish her all the best with her future wine endeavours. To all our readers, thank you for your support over the past year. If you find yourself in the fair city of Adelaide, please pop up to see us at our cellar door. We’re only a 20 minute drive from the city. Cheers, Andrew Kay Managing Director
Liam has been retained as Winery Manager for Ashton Hills Vineyard. This will enable Stephen to step away from some of the winery “grunt work” and hopefully ensure his involvement with AHV for many years to come. Perhaps it was this new-found freedom that led to Stephen’s first visit to Sydney in 20+ years, where he showcased our wines to various media and trade. Liam joins us with a wonderful outlook on life and a healthy CV. He was a Len Evans Tutorial scholar in 2015 and has judged in wine shows around the country. He made his own McLaren Vale wine under the Faux Pas Wines label, and has worked at Geddes Wines, Chapel Hill, Adelina, Some Young Punks, Grosset, d’Arenberg and a couple of wineries in Italy’s Sardegna region.
