I

don’t know about you, but I always find January a little dull after all the excitement of the build up to Christmas, the event itself and then New Year, so I have a little trick up my sleeve that helps me through the first couple of weeks (other than, of course, working on the February magazine and getting it ready for printing), and that is to meet up with friends in the New Year. Not only are they a tonic by cheering me up but they also ensure that my ‘mojo’ is well and truly returned to me in January! (I don’t really know what ‘mojo’ means, but I overheard it on the underground in London once.)

As ever, this edition is packed with lots of community information. As most of us know, the A & E and maternity departments at Epsom hospital have been threatened with closure and in this month’s magazine I am printing a letter from Chris Grayling MP to his constituents setting out this thoughts and also informing us that he is organising a meeting at Blenheim School in Epsom on Thursday 7th February and everyone is welcome, read his letter on page 16.

The Lloyds pharmacy in The Street, Ashtead closed some months ago and is yet to be replaced. This month I am featuring an update on a new planning application to replace this pharmacy and also contact details for you to get in touch with your views as to why this essential service should be returned to The Street, page 30.

As we write this the Christmas and New Year holidays draw to a close and most people begin their journeys back to the office. Ashtead is a commuter village.

You’ve only got to see the station up-line platform between 6.30 and 10am to see the hundreds of people waiting for their trains to Waterloo, Victoria and London Bridge.

Ashtead, but commuters are still finding other areas such as Barnett Wood Lane by the Pond. It appears we must consider “yellow lining” a radius from the station far enough away to discourage commuters from walking to the station from where they abandon their cars. How far is that? Who knows!

We sought to gauge the appetite for such a facility by questioning commuters and the result – limited. As well as a lack of interest from residents in Ashtead we learned interesting facts about the use of our station and the car park. A large number of people using the station come from Langley Vale, Headley, Leatherhead and Epsom. Why? Ashtead has a superb train service to all three London Terminals and coupled with that the car park charges, although still expensive, are cheaper than Leatherhead and Epsom. The daily charge at Ashtead is £4.70 and the others are £5.30 and £5.20 respectively. Epsom of course has very limited parking, in fact none now at the new station and in addition both Leatherhead and Epsom have no onstreet parking whereas Ashtead does.

Shops & Services Well it looks like we all made it to 2013 despite the Mayan prophecies !

This month I thought I would like to write a few lines about the changes proposed to the State Pension. For those of you already in receipt of it (it won’t affect you) and for those of you who think it's far too early to think about pensions can I suggest you turn over to the next page now.

For those of you who are interested read on!

There never seems to be a year without some changes or other to the pension rules and already this year the government has announced that they intend to simplify the State Pension from April 2017.

Currently if you have 30 years qualifying contributions you will receive a Basic State Pension of £107.45 a week, this can be topped up to £142.70 per week with pension credit if you have no other pension entitlements.

The changes proposed will mean that you will need 35 qualifying years for the new “flat rate” State Pension of £144 per week, this will rise in line with earnings, prices or 2.5% whichever is the highest.

In many ways this will make pensions so much simpler as everyone will get the same amount and the administration will be streamlined.

As always there will be winners and losers, the self-employed will probably be the main winners as they do not have a top up pension from the SERPS scheme or the State Second Pension. Another of the winners will be parents who do not work while they bring up children, they get credits for those years but lose out on the top up pensions just like the self-employed, a flat rate may well give them more.

The main losers are likely to be employees of the public and private sector who are opted out of the state second pension scheme and therefore pays less national insurance, they will face an increase.

For someone on an average wage is likely to be in the region of £270 a year.

There are already rumblings regarding the changes, many people are suggesting that a flat rate pension for all gives exactly the same to a millionaire as it does to the poorest pensioner.

Pensioners who have accumulated higher benefits through their SERPS and State Second Pensions giving them more than the £144 per week will be allowed to keep the higher payments giving them more than the £144 per week!

As I write this article it is intended that this will all happen in April 2017, I would like to make one prediction for the New Year, some of what I've written here will not get to 2017 without being amended by one government or another!

THE LEATHERHEAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The people of Leatherhead are often asked questions about what they would like to happen in Leatherhead.

The LRA's most recent survey involved a petition to advocate keeping the Help Shop on the High Street.

Despite all efforts - petitions, press coverage, and local Councillor intervention, the Help Shop will move tothe Library, as savings need to be made. On the bright side it was pointed out that there is free parking near the Library.

About ten years ago the residents of Leatherhead, Bookham, Ashtead, and Fetcham were asked to participate in a Leatherhead Health Check. Answers to questions such as 'what do you like best and least about Leatherhead' were carefully recorded in a document called Leatherhead Tomorrow. It included comments about bus service, the environment, parking, the High Street, lack of shops, etc.

Since the survey, projects have successfully been completed with the River Mole pathway being the most outstanding. If you enjoy riding the 479 Bus, notice the 'real time' notice boards at the town centre bus stop.

Seating and additional cycle racks have been added to the Townscape. At the time of the survey, there were20 to 30 cars parked daily on a pedestrianised High Street with no enforcement. Getting those cars removed was a huge step forward. This shows that participating in a survey can be worthwhile.

At the same time that Leatherhead Tomorrow was published, an organization called the Leatherhead AreaPartnership (LAP) was set up, made up of 30 member organizations. Its purpose was to seek funding for projects identified in the Health Check.

In 2013, we are hoping that the LAP, led by new Chairman, John Howarth, will identify fresh projects to focuson. One of the activities the LAP began before Christmas was to create a figurative 'snapshot' of the activity of people and use of space in the town, with the idea of gathering data to use for comparison with other

towns and within the town itself.

The pre Christmas activity recorded the availability of parking spaces in all car parks. A footfall count will betaken twice in the new year. These statistics will help in making comparisons with what is happening across the country. It's already obvious that we need to increase the footfall and bring more sense of Community to Leatherhead. Some of the activities being suggested for Leatherhead may just achieve this.

Local businessman, Bob Prosser, is privately funding the marketing and set up of a Leatherhead Food Festival on 5th April with the cooperation of various restaurateurs.

You never know - this could lead to becoming the largest food festival in the UK. Our Leatherhead Drama Festival, in its 10th year is now the largest Drama Festival in the UK! Another possible initiative is the purchase of Harrington's Bakery with a view to creating housing on the first floor and an indoor market on the ground floor. The Health Check found our most sought after shop is a butcher., and there is a butcher interested in space in an indoor market, so we await developments with great interest.

Meanwhile local resident, Graham Pountney is putting forward the idea of a local radio station, the Mole Valley Sound. The station has been designed as a ‘Not for Profit Social Enterprise’ to operate from 8am to 6pm with local DJ’s promoting local issues for local people, of all ages.

From 6pm the plan is to involve community groups by giving them their own programmes to promote their profile and events. If you have an interest in this project please contact: gmpountney@btinternet.com.

As the Leatherhead Residents' Association seeks to find out if we need to develop a Neighbourhood Plan by meeting with MV officers, please engage in community activities and help with all surveys that come your way.

Open letter to constituents from Rt Hon Chris Grayling MP re Epsom Hospital ‘During the week the team running the hospital review held their project board meeting, and the London based group of doctors and nurses who have been advising the project submitted a recommendation that two of the five A&E and maternity units at St George’s, Kingston, Croydon, St Helier and Epsom should be closed. Although the project team is stressing that these are only recommendations and not a final decision, it seems pretty clear that the main candidates for closure would be at St Helier and Epsom.

This is an extraordinary development, given the fact that the discussion involving Surrey has barely started, and the project team are due to hold their first meeting next week with local interest groups to explain how the review will work. It is bound to lead people locally to the view that the review process is not a serious one.

It is also a very risky step to take legally, as I know from my own experience that public bodies need to be very careful to ensure that any process is genuine – or there is a high risk that it can be challenged in the courts.

I have already made my strong concerns known to the NHS team leading the process. They have a lot of ground to recover if the Better Services Better Value project is to have any credibility at all in Surrey.

The big difficulty I have is that this is not a political process. It is the medical profession who are driving the change. In some respects they are right. There are examples of where the consolidation of services has been good for patients. For example, the decision to treat stroke patients in a smaller number of specialist centres in London has lead to a significant improvement in the likelihood of recovering from a stroke. That’s obviously a good thing.

But I have three arguments with the approach that seems to be being taken.

Firstly, the idea of closing acute services at both Epsom and St Helier seems completely unrealistic. It would leave a gap in provision running from St George’s to Guildford, and in the case of maternity, where there are 4,500 births across the two hospitals, it would require other hospitals to absorb the equivalent of a large maternity unit in a major hospital.

Secondly, I want the future of Epsom to be decided in a Surrey context, and not a London one.

Since we now know that the financial position at Epsom is not nearly as bad as was suggested a couple of months ago, I think the process of splitting Epsom from St Helier and looking at Epsom’s future in that context should restart.

Thirdly, it is very obvious that our own local doctors should have the main input in what happens.

And yet the provisional recommendations have been put forward without them even having the chance to have their say.

I have therefore written to all of our local GPs to ask them their views on the future of Epsom, so we can put those to the Better Services Better Value team.

If a good majority of our local doctors say they want to see changes, we will have to listen to them. But at the moment things seem to be moving ahead without them even having the chance to express their views.

I am planning to hold a public meeting to discuss what is happening on Thursday 7th February at 7pm. It will be held in the main hall at Blenheim High School, Longmead Road, Epsom, KT19 9BH. All are welcome.

Yet another scam doing the rounds...

A recent edition of the Daily Mail has details of a new card scam that is clever and believable.

Someone rings you up purporting to be a Police Office from the Fraud Office. They ask if you or a member of your family has used their debit card in a store in London. If not you are advised your card may have been cloned and they need to be blocked. To verify their identity as a police officer they tell you to ring off and dial 999. An operator answers and you ask for the name of the officer who telephoned you. You are ‘put through’. Reassured you are then asked for the PIN of all your cards and advised someone will call to collect all cards (not just the one ‘cloned’.)

You are told to seal them in an envelope and hand them to a courier who will call. You are kept on the phone until they call and for a while afterwards whilst your cards are all used to draw cash. This prolonged call stops you telephoning your banks to block the cards.

The verification call works because the caller does not put down his/her phone and you are never disconnected. Dialling 999 has no effect and you remain connected to the fraudster whose accomplice answers the call in a professional manner and puts you through.

It’s all very slick and well acted throughout.

Volunteer administrators needed for Wildlife Aid The admin office at The Wildlife Aid Foundation is looking for volunteer administrators to work just a few hours every week. The role encompasses all aspects of the charity, from processing donations and memberships and organising volunteer rotas to re-homing hedgehogs and dealing with incoming wildlife enquiries and problems.

Anyone wishing to brush up on their admin skills (and to learn a few new skills as well!) should visit the Wildlife Aid Foundation website: www.wildlifeaid.org.uk/ articles/volunteering/volunteers in the first instance and complete an application form.

Full training in the role will be given; however applicants should be able to demonstrate good levels of literacy and numeracy, and must have a working knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook.

A Lovesick Valentine On the morning of the 13th, Ben and Daniel were still very poorly and Sarah was sick at the breakfast table. Ruth cleared it up and tucked her into bed, with the holiday beach towels on the floor, together with Ruth’s largest mixing bowl, in case of an emergency.

It all started during the second week of February.

Christmas and January had passed without mishap and the family came out of the holiday season in great health and only a few pounds heavier.

Everyone around them had been suffering from colds, flu and vomiting bugs but Ruth, Sam, Ben, Daniel and Sarah sailed through with barely a sniffle. Ruth would have liked to attribute this fortitude to good diet, vitamin supplements, exercise, fresh air and excellent hygiene.

However, she would be telling a blatant lie. She had no idea how they’d escaped unscathed and simply thanked their good fortune.

Ruth decided that she’d do something really special for Valentine’s Day this year. She and Sam had been married for fifteen years and they loved each other very much, but recently any romance had been replaced by routine and Sam’s work seemed to dominate his life. She also worked very hard and the children’s increasingly busy schedules only added to the humdrum nature of everyday life.

She decided that the first priority for a romantic evening was to get rid of the children.

Arrangements were made for Ben to stay with a friend and for Daniel and Sarah to go to Sam’s mother, who was ‘simply delighted’ to have them, once Ruth explained that she was planning on ‘spoiling’ her son.

Ruth now had to accept that a child free Valentine’s Day was clearly out of the question but, if they were all in bed, she and Sam could still have a romantic evening with champagne and pretty lingerie. She put the call in to her mother -in-law and received the expected response. No visits for at least two weeks, until the family were completely germ free.

Ruth dashed out to the shops and bought the ingredients for her romantic meal. She was going to serve asparagus wrapped in Parma ham, followed by salmon in watercress sauce and tiramisu for dessert.

On the morning of the 14th, Sam and Ruth exchanged cards and kisses. Ruth then showed her husband what she’d hidden in the back of the wardrobe. He promised to be home early from work and left the house with a twinkle in his eye.

The children were still too unwell to go to school, so Ruth settled them down with hot water bottles and a dvd, before starting on the cooking.

She began to feel a bit queasy at about four o’clock in the afternoon and raced for the bathroom at about five thirty. Sam arrived soon afterwards, with a big bunch of roses and she kissed him gingerly.

Ruth decided on a romantic menu and bought a bottle of expensive champagne, which she temporarily hid at the back of her wardrobe, next to the newly bought set of lacy black underwear and stockings.

Sam had been distracted all day by the delightful prospect of spending Valentine’s Day in bed with his beautiful wife. Unfortunately, he started to feel unwell at about six fifteen.

On the morning of February the 11th, Ben complained of feeling unwell but went to school as usual. Just after lunch, Ruth got a call from the school nurse, informing her that Ben had just been sick and would have to go home. Ruth was sympathetic but unconcerned. Valentine’s day was still three days away and these bugs usually only lasted twenty four hours. She tucked him up in bed with the washing up bowl by his side and hoped for the best.

The romantic couple abandoned the meal and the champagne and raced up to bed. Sadly, however, the lingerie remained at the back of the wardrobe.

On the morning of February the 12th, Daniel threw up all over his bed. Ruth cleared it up and put the sheets in the washing machine. She gave her son some paracetamol and tucked him up with old towels and a bucket by his bed, before phoning the school. She ignored the huge wave of guilt and decided not to tell her mother-in-law. There were still two days to go and he’d be better by then.

Replacement Pharmacy for The Street, Ashtead Residents will be aware that some months ago a Lloyds Chemist and Pharmacy closed in The Street in Ashtead. This pharmacy was used by many residents in the north of Ashtead which accounts for some 2000 homes. Census information tells us that many of these residents are elderly.

Ashtead has been served by three pharmacies for 20+ years. If three pharmacies were deemed sufficient for the population 20 years ago, why now should two pharmacies be deemed sufficient for a population that has increased to c.15,000 residents?

The original application to re-open a pharmacy in The Street was declined by NHS Surrey and this decision was upheld by the NHS Litigation Panel in Leeds. We are aware that one of the principal objectors was Lloyds Pharmacy themselves and it appears they are taking the attitude that if "we can't make it work, then we'll make sure no-one else can try."

Many residents live to the south of the A24 and their journey to the north of the village is at least a mile. In winter weather with rain, snow and ice the journey is more troublesome and potentially hazardous. Slips and falls in the elderly can lead to broken bones and become a greater burden upon the NHS. Three months on and Buckleys are again submitting a revised Application and residents can help in this process by writing in support of the Application. Overwhelming support from residents will be key in getting previous objections overturned.

The main points to be addressed by residents are as set out in the application summary and the following pointers:SUMMARY Ashtead Ward area also commonly known as 'The Village and The Street' area has a significant elderly population and the loss of its pharmacy last February has made access to pharmaceutical services very difficult especially winter months Salient points to note: • The proposed pharmacy will have Saturday and Sunday (10am to 12pm) as part of its core hours;

• will provide parking for up to 10 cars with 3 disabled bays to reflect the need of the residents; • the floor plan has been designed around 'Healthy Living Pharmacy' concept; • will provide free screening and will work collaboratively with all local GP practices; • will endeavour to deliver on all enhanced services the NHS commissioning boards wishes it to take on and all staff will 'skill up' for any future commissioned LES; • will provide a dedicated area for Local Authority, NHSCB and CCG to deliver important Public Health campaigns; • will stock an extended range of mobility aids in line with its elderly population; • the workshop/conference room will be made available for use to all Commissioners, selfhelp groups and voluntary and charitable organisations.

If you have a situation or story where you as a resident have had issues with access to a pharmacy, this will have a lot of bearing on the final decision. It is imperative that this be brought to the attention of the decision makers.

Satay Vegetable Skewers Serves 4

Ready in 30 minutes If you are short on time but still want a flavoursome supper then try these delicious vegetable kebabs with a lovely spicy peanut sauce and spring onion noodles.

For non-veggie kebabs replace the aubergine with cubes of lean pork or chicken fillet and cook for 15-20 minutes until the meat is cooked through and lightly charred.

Ingredients:

1.

Place the peanut butter, coconut, chilli powder and garlic in a small pan with 180ml water. Heat gently, stirring all the time, for 2-3 minutes until the coconut has dissolved and the sauce has thickened. Remove from the heat, stir in half the soy sauce. Thin down with a little more water to get a pouring consistency, if necessary.

Par-boil the peppers in a pan of boiling water for 2 minutes, drain well and pat dry with kitchen paper. Cut the aubergine slices into quarters. Thread the peppers and aubergine onto 8 presoaked wooden skewers with the onion wedges.

3.

Preheat a cast-iron griddle pan until almost smoking. Whisk 2 tbsp of the oil and remaining soy sauce together and brush all over the vegetable kebabs.

Cook the kebabs on the hot griddle pan for 6-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender and lightly charred.

4.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles in a large pan of boiling water for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and toss together with the rest of the sesame oil and the spring onions. Serve the kebabs on the noodles and drizzle over the satay sauce.

• 100g crunchy peanut butter • 25g creamed coconut, chopped • 1/2 tsp chilli powder • 1 garlic clove peeled and crushed • 4 tbsp soy sauce • 3 small peppers (red, green and yellow), deseeded and cut into 2.5cm pieces • 4 thick slices of aubergine • 1 large red onion, peeled and cut into slim wedges • 3 tbsp sesame oil • 4 nests fine egg noodles • 4 spring onions, trimmed and finely sliced

Tip: If you don’t have a griddle pan cook the kebabs under a preheated grill or use a heavy-based shallow frying and add a little oil.

Helping Chernobyl children in 2013

The Mid-Surrey link of the national charity Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline will be inviting a group of children from Belarus to visit the Ashtead and Epsom area this summer, and is looking for volunteers to assist with the visit.

If you would like to get involved with this year’s visit (either as a host or in some other way) please call Delia on 020 8398 6643 or visit www.midsurreylink.org.

This will be the twelfth summer running that the charity has brought children from Belarus to the area for a month’s break from the contamination with which they live on a daily basis, and which can affect their developing immune systems. Belarus was unlucky enough to receive a significant share of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and it will remain contaminated for thousands of years. The visiting children benefit from the chance to eat uncontaminated food and breathe clean air for a month.

We are also holding an information event at 8pm on Thursday 7th February at St George’s Church Hall, Barnett Wood Lane, Ashtead.

The children stay in pairs with local families for two weeks, living as part of the family.

Each host family is allocated a support to provide them with practical help as needed throughout the visit. The children take part in organised activities and outings, such as visits to the coast (they are unlikely to have seen the sea before!) and Chessington World of Adventures. They also receive dental and eye tests, and glasses, if they need them.

It really is the holiday of a lifetime for children whose lives are affected by the continuing legacy of the Chernobyl disaster.

Opportunities for young people to work with local theatre company Freewheelers Theatre Company - an integrated multi-arts company based in Leatherhead – have two great opportunities for teenagers to get involved this term, with a new weekly Youth Theatre Group, and a half term project.

A new Youth Theatre Group meets on Mondays from 6pm – 8pm at The Bridge Youth Centre in Leatherhead. The group is for young people aged 13-19 and is run by Freewheelers in partnership with The Bridge Youth Centre and The Reigate and Redhill YMCA, supported by Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children. This exciting new project offers both disabled and able-bodied teenagers the chance to work with professional artists, using theatre, movement, music and media to create their own performances, in a creative, relaxed and fun environment!

Then, during the February half term (18-22 Feb), Freewheelers will run their next PLAY IN A WEEK at The Leatherhead Theatre. Following on from the success of previous PLAY IN A WEEK projects, this exciting five day short course for disabled and non-disabled teenagers (aged 13-19) includes drama, dancing and singing, leading to a performance on the final day for friends and family. The course will be led by Brandon McGuire, artistic director of Freewheelers, and is supported by Surrey Short Breaks for Disabled Children.

There are no set fees for the either of these projects, but donations will be very welcome.

The Freewheelers give people with and without disabilities the chance to produce and participate in high -quality, innovative, original theatre, film and dance that challenges barriers and perceptions.

Find the Hair Colour That’s Perfect for You They say that blondes have more fun, but whatever your hair colour you’re sure to look and feel fabulous if you find the shade that’s right for you.

We all love to try out something different once in a while and there’s no better way to create a fresh look than with a change to your hair colour.

A new hue can take years off your age, emphasise your best features and leave your complexion looking radiant.

It’s crucial to get it right though, because if you pick the wrong colour you can be left with an unflattering and disappointing result. Your hair is undoubtedly your best accessory, so it’s crucial to think carefully before doing anything drastic or making a hasty change.

Here’s our guide to what to consider before you reach for the hair dye.

Start with Your Skin Tone Whether you fancy being a blonde, brunette or redhead, it’s important to identify whether your natural complexion is warm or cool. This determines what colour base you should look for when you pick your shade. To find out which category you fall into, try this simple test: Stand in front of a mirror in natural light with no make-up on. Hold a white garment by your face, then do the same with a cream coloured one.

Decide which looks better with your colouring, does the white enhance your eyes and skin? If so, you’re cool. If the cream looks best, then you’re warm.

Consider your jewellery; does gold suit you better than silver? If so, your skin tone is warm.

If silver looks stunning, then you’re cool.

Cool Colours If your skin colouring is cool, you should choose an ash, mink or even platinum blonde shade if you fancy a blonde hue.

Brunette colours with an ashy base work best with cool skins. Think coffee coloured browns, medium brown with ashy highlights or even black.

Stick to burgundy, mahogany and purple based reds - they will look fabulous with your skin.

If you fancy standing out from the crowd with vibrant red locks, go for copper and auburn shades. Any red with a golden or orange base colour works well.

Have a Good Hair Day We’ve all had our fair share of hair disasters over the years and one of the main causes is changing our hair colour at home.

If you plan on going more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour, then it really is essential that you visit a salon to have your hair done professionally.

Remember that many colours bought for home use won’t necessarily look the same on your hair as they do on the box. If you have been dying your hair a dark shade for a long time there may be a build-up of colour on the lengths that could leave you with uneven results.

Blonde hues are very fashionable at the moment but lightening dark hair can be damaging. Invest in a good conditioner and have a toner standing by in case your at-home highlights turn out looking brassy.

Red hair colours are great but they have a tendency to fade quickly, so be prepared to find the time and money to regularly spend on your colour.

Bacchus Award winners Theme: Patterns of Nature

I was kindly invited by Denbies Vineyard on Friday 11th January to help judge the Bacchus Art Exhibition, this year’s theme being ‘Patterns of Nature’. There were just under 90 entries this year so the judging was made that bit harder, especially as the quality of the work submitted to the exhibition was exceptional.

All judges finally settled on one overall winner, ‘Tidal Traces’ (pictured below) a photograph submitted by Tessa Eley.

Second place went to Hilary Webb for her entry in ceramic, entitled ‘Lizard among the leaves’ (pictured below) A close third was a watercolour by Jean Canter ‘Tree Barks’ (pictured right).

Leatherhead Fire Station Belmont Road – Holly Court Opening of Leatherhead Fire Station c: 1926

Holly Court, River Lane end Many of the old images of Leatherhead show the clock tower in North Street which also housed the town’s early horse drawn fire engine. By 1926 a new motorised appliance had been purchased and a purpose built fire station was constructed at the River Lane end of Belmont Road. The engine was manufactured by Merryweathers and named Margaret Blades after the daughter of Sir George Rowland Blades M.P. He performed the opening ceremony of the new station shortly before being elected Lord Mayor of London. At the time the family were living at Grangemount, Grange Road, Ashtead. In 1927 they moved to Cobham. In 1928 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Ebbisham.

Also, a new Fire Committee was set up and arranged that the Gas Company calls the Fire Brigade by sounding a hooter when the fire alarm bell rang in the Post Office in North Street.

The second motorised appliance at Leatherhead was manufactured by Dennis Brothers of Guildford and was named Margaret Rose in 1932. The naming ceremony was carried out by the Hon. Mrs Greville, of Polesden Lacey, who was Princess Margaret’s godmother.

In 1969 a new fire station was opened in Cobham Road which was large enough to house the latest appliances and the full-time crew. After the Belmont Road station was demolished it was replaced with private residential buildings known as Holly Court.

Owners overfeed fat felines, says survey Around a quarter of Britain’s cats (23 per cent) are regarded by their owners to be overweight - yet continue to be fed too many treats, according to a survey conducted by Cats Protection.

The UK’s leading cat welfare charity, which has a branch in Epsom decided to conduct the survey because feline obesity is on the rise and the organisation wanted to make owners aware of the risks.

The study of 1,120 cat owners reveals that around seven in 10 cats (70 per cent) that were slightly, or very, overweight were given a special food treat at least once every week by their doting owners.

It also found that all cats (irrespective of their weight) were being fed unsuitable special treats over Christmas such as milk, chocolate or cheese – all of which can make cats ill.

“This shows that Britain’s overweight cats continue to be fed too many treats, which owners principally did out of love, habit or a desire to make their cat feel like a member of the family,” said Pamela Green, PR & Comms volunteer “However, overweight cats are at significant risk of diabetes and arthritis so there is the danger that owners are making a bad situation even worse.”

“It’s not wrong to give treats to cats,” said Pamela Green, “however, we would advise owners to give ones that are specially formulated for cats, and consider their cat’s total calorific intake so that they can reduce their other food accordingly.”

A healthy adult cat should usually weigh around four to five kilos so, as one of Cats Protection’s main aims is to provide advice and information to the public about good cat care, the charity has issued some top tips for helping cats to eat properly: • • •

Stick to a reputable pet food When feeding your cat, stick to the manufacturer’s recommended feeding amount Avoid giving your cat fatty foods such as cheese, chocolate, crisps and other ‘human’ food. If you want to offer your cat a special treat, give him a little boiled fish or boneless chicken

Ashtead Women’s Institute - January 2013 meeting There was a warm welcome from our President, Sally Cole, to our New Year meeting, and to our visitors that evening. After telling us of news items we needed to know about for our coffee break, we were introduced to our speaker for the evening.

Ann Chance, who had been a Senior Care Attendant for many years, told us of the many thrills, and almost spills, when taking a friend, Valerie, with cerebral palsy, to America. It had been Valerie’s long-held wish to go, and there were many preparations to be made beforehand of course. The trip started with a welcome wait for flights in the VIP airport lounge thanks to Ann’s contacts and despite some unexpected complications during the long flight, when it seemed the whole world needed to know Valerie needed a call of nature, they arrived safely and enjoyed being warmly welcomed and helped in the U.S.A..

There were many tales to tell of their visit but the most important part was to take a flight over the Grand Canyon, from where they experienced the most wonderful views. Unfortunately, later Valerie was taken very ill and had to spend some time in hospital but amazingly they then travelled on to Bryce Canyon for a helicopter trip, before heading off for Indian Territory and the bewildering sights of Las Vegas – an incident-filled but very rewarding holiday.

Ashtead W.I.’s pre-Christmas fund-raising events had been very well supported, and our Carol Singing collection for the Princess Alice Hospice had been a great success. Thanks to all who contributed and took part.

More details were given of our proposed visits to the BBC and Chelsea Hospital, and of our many subgroups. There was news of coming events planned by Surrey W.I. We also voted for one of the two resolutions to go to our AGM – ‘The Decline of our High Streets & Town Centres’, and ‘Resolving to Keep Young People Suicide-safe Online’.

Our next meeting will be on Wed. 6th February at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, the speaker Mike Wigley on Honey for Tea. 77

Working towards sustainable consumption The critical thing is...

Critical thinking is now being offered at AS level – this is really good news, it means young people are being taught the skills needed to avoid the pitfalls of faulty logic and false conclusions, surely skills that we all need in a technological and complex world.

Critical thinking is about clarity, accuracy, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth and fairness. It’s the ability to be constructively sceptical and reach sound conclusions, being able to spot the difference between information and spin, and making rational decisions about cause and effect. Science is based on critical thinking: it’s about collecting evidence, refining information, discarding false leads and drawing conclusions from what is observed. It arrives at answers that are not opinions, they are facts backed up by hard information. This is different from politics and spin, which is more about making decisions about things like “should we cut emissions?”, “who should cut the most?”

These things are up for debate.

Why am I talking about critical thinking? Well, I still hear people saying that there is controversy about global warming and climate change. I still see in the media comments about global warming being a natural process, that the climate has changed before and it’s nothing to do with man-made carbon emissions. And anyway, there are lots of natural sources of CO2, like volcanoes…

So what is the evidence that global warming is caused by man-made emissions? There are several relevant facts: we know that about a million million tonnes of CO2 have been released by burning fossil fuels since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and a lot is still in the atmosphere, with about 30,000 million tonnes being added every year; the atmospheric concentration of CO2 is now around 400ppm compared to 280ppm for pre-industrial levels. True, volcanoes also release CO2 but only about 100 million tonnes a year! Satellite measurements from space show that heat radiated from our planet is absorbed by the CO2 and methane in the atmosphere (the greenhouse effect). And average global temperatures are rising, when looked at over many years. Observation, data and reasoned cause and effect!

Climate change deniers try to blur the issue by cherry-picking data over short periods, they quote discredited data that has been superseded by better more recent long-term studies, they wheel out false experts to make spurious claims, in the hope that being, say, a celebrated economist will make people to think they know something about climate change. And they use logical fallacies, for example saying that as the climate has changed before, before the industrial age, it must therefore be natural and not caused by mankind now. Spot the mistake! (Answer – climate is not always changed by the same factors…)

The critical thing is, be a critical thinker – ask questions, get answers and don’t accept shoddy reasoning, especially from those with a financial incentive to distort the facts!!

In addition, we really want to encourage and develop ways in which you can see and speak with your local team at times when it is most convenient to you. If you have any ideas or suggestions about new ways in which we can engage more effectively with members of the community, then please let us know.

We have already had one vehicle stolen this winter where an opportunist thief took the invitation and drove off in a nicely de-iced and warm vehicle. Also remember the possible insurance implications.

In particular, we would mention leaving your vehicle in car parks or at beauty spots, of which there are many across Mole Valley. If officers on patrol see your vehicle parked and unattended with any items on view, you can expect to receive an advisory letter to warn you of the potential risks you faced of becoming a victim of crime.

If everyone makes the effort to make their own property as safe and secure as possible, this will go a long way to reducing vehicle crime.

Wildlife Aid says “don’t use slug pellets” Following the recent heavy rains and the profusion of slugs in Surrey, the Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF) has issued a warning about the harm that slug pellets can do to the environment and the hazard that they pose to wildlife and to domestic pets.

WAF’s appeal comes after water companies reported that they had found exceptionally high levels of metaldehyde – the key active ingredient in slug pellets – in watercourses in southern England, which is an indication that slug pellets are already being used in large numbers following the heavy rainfall and “unprecedented” numbers of slugs.
