s I write this note the weather seems to have finally taken a turn for the better, lots of lovely spring sunshine and, I have to say, it has never rained on my birthday (which falls in the middle of March) ever!

We’ve already had our first barbeque this year, it started well, then the sun went down half way through - it was early March after all - so we finished cooking by torchlight much to the amusement of our neighbours. Well April sees the Ashtead Spring Clean which this year falls on Saturday 5th. As ever, a great deal of organisation goes towards this big clean up and all the details of how you can take part can be found on the Ashtead Residents’ Association page 8. Staying with Ashtead, the Citizens’ Advice Bureau has an adviser available at the Buckley Pharmacy and St George’s Church at certain times of the month, these days and timings can be found on page 26. Now that the weather is brightening up and we are all facing longer and warmer days, perhaps now is the time to look at joining a local club? Ashtead Community Vision Consultation exercise for possible housing development under way Ashtead Neighbourhood Forum and its working group Ashtead Community Vision (ACV) have been busy plying Village streets with copies of the latest newsletter as part of the site assessment consultation process.

The Forum will review, amend as necessary and agree the assessments before their submission to Mole Valley District Council by 23rd May 2014. Mole Valley councillors will have the final say in deciding which, if any, Ashtead sites are included in their draft Housing and Traveller Sites Plan, to be issued towards the end of 2014. In total ten sites in Ashtead have been put forward for possible housing development. Each of these sites (see list below) has been put forward by their owner and has been assessed by ACV. A number of residents have incorrectly suggested that ACV is putting forward development sites, but that is not the case. ACV’s role is merely to assess any sites where the landowner wishes to develop. For each site, ACV have prepared a document describing the issues that need to be considered by Mole Valley, including access, travel, landscape, biodiversity, heritage and local infrastructure. As with the Green Belt Boundary Review, we need feedback from local residents to ensure that we have identified all the points that should be considered and to gauge local opinion. All the documents are on the website as is a survey where comments can be made. This consultation will run from 24th February until 6th April 2014 with a two hour open morning being held at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall at 10am on Saturday 29th March. Once

Village Day Saturday 14th June 2014 Community Service Awards - Who's going to win? There have always been a number of people in Ashtead who give so much time, energy, skill and expertise to our community separately from their paid employment. They have devoted hours to ideas and causes far and above the call of duty. The Rotary Club has recognised such individuals and organisations over the past 13 years by giving Community Service Awards during a public presentation every year on Village Day. Usually there is one Individual Award and one Group Award although, exceptionally, there may be more than one in either category.

We shall be continuing the award scheme this year and I invite you to make nominations for individual and/or group awards which, again, will be presented on Village Day, Saturday 14th June. You may nominate, either on behalf of your organisation or as and an individual, as many candidates as you wish for each award. The Rotary Club's selection panel will make the final decision based on the information you supply and on other information which may be gathered from elsewhere. The awards are at the absolute discretion of the selection panel.

Ruth’s Rose With both arms weighed down with shopping bags, there was nothing more irritating than rain. Rose was also having great trouble seeing because her new luminous green spectacles kept slipping and were now balanced precariously on the tip of her nose. The glasses hadn’t been a great success. The girl in the optician’s had assured her they were very ‘now’ but after a few strange looks from people in Sainsbury’s, she was beginning to question what ‘now’ actually meant for a seventy six year old myopic pensioner. Perhaps she’d have been better off with spectacles that were a little less ‘now’ and a bit more ‘then’…

She’d met her friend Ruth in this section. Rose had known Ruth’s cheeky sons, Ben and Daniel since they were toddlers and she remembered knitting a lovely pink cardigan for her new born daughter, Sarah. Rose had almost burst with pride when Ruth showed it off to Mrs Chivers. Rose also remembered when Daniel hid behind the Military History shelves and Mr Green, the library manager, had to make an announcement over the public address system. That was certainly an eventful day.

Some of the other mothers in the library gave Rose disapproving looks and ushered their children away. Rianna's Fund Ashtead to Amsterdam sponsored bike ride 11th-14th September 2014

Rianna's Fund brought a little bit of Amsterdam to Ashtead as it launched its 2014 sponsored bike ride.

All participants have to do is commit to raise ÂŁ850 in sponsorship. This will cover all expenses and make a big contribution to changing the lives of some of the poorest children in the world. The bike ride is a key fund raiser for Rianna's Fund, with the 2012 ride raising enough to build a four classroom school block in Uganda, educating 150 children every year.

RETIRES IN DAYS On April 8th 2014 Windows XP and Office 2003 “retires”. If you are a Windows XP or Office 2003 user what will it mean for you? The simple answer is that you will no longer receive Microsoft updates, security fixes, assistance or support concerning Windows XP and Office 2003- the copy of the software on your computer will continue to work, it will not suddenly turn off and not work.

Is that a big deal? On the surface- not really However… because your XP computer will become a less secure device, some companies have stated that they will not allow Windows XP to connect to their secure websites. This could impact any website that has a shopping basket or secure sign on, be it your bank, building society, e-bay, PayPal, supermarket , Government/ Tax office, this list goes on. Due to the lack of updates and increasing security risk, some commentators have stated it will become a “Hackers Paradise” as they will be finding more ways to penetrate your system and there will be little to stop them. The ramifications could be massive you will leave yourself venerable to hackers and risks. Leatherhead Morning Women’s Institute Our February meeting was well attended and we were pleased to welcome back two of our members, who we haven’t seen for a while. Our President gave a report on subjects raised at our last meeting, and reminder of the trip to the Chilterns in April. Also in April, the Leatherhead WI celebrates its 29th birthday. Our guest speaker was Sheila Ford, who is the verger at the Parish Church. She gave an interesting and entertaining talk last year about her working life, teaching in South Africa and Australia, and her many adventures along the way. This was a continuation of her story and the various events in her career. As before, it was very enjoyable and an insight into a fascinating life. Our programme for 2014 is a full and varied one and, if you would like details, please phoe Betty on 01372 374650. Our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday in the month, at Leatherhead Parish Church Hall at 10.15am. Visitors are always welcome.

Local National Trust Supporters’ Group Epsom, Ewell & District Centre

In 1971, a Group was formed to give support to the National Trust, and although called Epsom, Ewell and District Centre, has members from a much wider area. It runs a varied programme of social events which includes evening lectures, coach outings, guided London walks, other trips to London, garden parties, coffee mornings, a Christmas lunch, and even a one week holiday. This year will see the first “Lunch at a local Restaurant”, and a Quiz Night. All the events are intended to be sociable, interesting and fun, as well as helping to raise funds to support specific National Trust projects. Evening Lectures are held at Bourne Hall in Ewell, once a month from September to June (excluding January), and this year include Scotney Castle, The Wey Navigations, and 150 Years of the London Underground. Coach outings visit historic houses and gardens (not necessarily National Trust), and visits to London have included The Magic Circle, and a backstage tour of The Royal Opera House. This year there will be a Tour of The National Theatre, and a visit to the Banqueting House (pic left). Newsletters are produced four times a year.

We rehearse early Wednesday evenings during term-time at Manor House School, in Bookham. There are two main concerts each year, and we hold soloists’ concerts and perform at village fairs at other times. If you are between 7 and 18 years of age and play an instrument at Grade 1 or above, Encore Youth Orchestra could be your next step. Strings players are particularly welcome at the moment.

The Surrey Bird Club

Who We Are? / What We Do? The Surrey Bird Club has been going since 1957 and is for anyone who is interested in the wild birds of Surrey. People who join us can carry out a range of activities from recording birds seen in their local area through to helping with research and surveys carried out by the British Trust for Ornithology. We produce newsletters four times a year as well as an annual report.

And yes they are still around in Ashtead & Leatherhead. Birds were heard singing in Malden Rushett and Horton Country Park.

Are there Nightingales in Ashtead & Leatherhead?

In the past people said they heard Nightingales around in Ashtead & Leatherhead. We know from research carried out by the British Trust for Ornithology they declined by 57% between 1995 and 2009. The reasons for this are unknown. Ideas have been put forward include changing climate, lack of traditional woodland management or increases in the deer population resulting in a loss of suitable habitat. The exact reasons are unclear and further research is currently being carried out. The last survey in 2012/2013 found 143 birds across Surrey, with the South West corner their stronghold, but also good numbers on Bookham Common. Why not join the Surrey Bird Club on our Field Meeting to Bookham Common on Sunday 4th May? All our meetings are free to attend. You don’t need to be a member of the bird club or need to have bird watching experience. There will be people to help you with bird identification. 52

Barbara Laird (pic left) spoke about the Guildford Street Angels of which she has been a member for four years.

The Street Angels are a group of volunteers who patrol the streets of Guildford at the weekend giving help and support to the young people who become involved with heavy drinking, drug abuse etc. after emerging from the clubs and bars late at night. They are on duty in pairs from 10.30pm to 4am, and Barbara was pleased to report that the police have produced data that shows that their involvement in this work has resulted in a decrease in the problems in the area. Club members were impressed with the dedication shown by the Street Angels.

Open Day at Leatherhead Tennis Club Saturday 5th April

Located in Cannon Grove, Fetcham, the club offers a year-round range of activities including adult and junior coaching, ‘turn-up and play’ club sessions for varying levels, team matches, tournaments and many social events. In a recent survey, members cited ‘friendliness’ as one of the club’s top features. This year’s Open Day takes place on Saturday April 5th from 2-5 pm. The club welcomes new members, so come along to see its new facilities and find out about programmes and membership. If you fancy hitting a ball, wear your trainers or tennis shoes - the club can provide tennis rackets and other players! If you can’t make the open day, come and speak to a coach on a Tuesday evening (adults) or a Saturday morning (juniors). In the Spring, the club will again run its Saturday ‘rusty rackets’ programme to help adults return to the game and its midweek coaching programme for others, especially parents, who want to learn how to play. Leatherhead Tennis Club is run on a not-for-profit basis by its members. Annual membership fees are highly competitive and there is no additional joining fee. New or rusty players who are uncertain about membership are welcome to join a coaching programme first.

Ashtead Townswomen's Guild After the ‘business’ section at our AGM on 4th March, we enjoyed an excellent talk by one of our members, Audrey David, about her eventful journey to the island of St Helena when she went to stay with her son’s family who are based there for two years. She had us in stitches when she described her disembarkation from the ship that had taken her on the last leg of her journey. She was literally winched ashore in a container! Several members went to the Mid Surrey Federation of TG’s ‘USA Day’, suitably attired for the wild West. Entertainment was provided by Ann Chance who had been on a covered wagon-train, trail and camping holiday. Her humorous description of the very badly organised experience was hilarious. The next event to be organised by the Federation will be its AGM and lunch at Clandon Regis Golf Club in April. Several other activities are planned, including curling and line dancing afternoons and later in the year will be croquet, bowls and scrabble. Some of our members will be attending a service in Oxford in April to celebrate the 85th anniversary of Townswomen’s Guilds. Our own Guild is having a St George’s Day Tea Party and, in June, a coach trip to Worthing. At our meeting on Tuesday 1st April, Glenda Hall will be giving a talk on ‘The Beauty of the Swiss Alps’. Ashtead Women’s Institute - March 2014 Meeting A warm welcome for us all this evening and particularly for a new member of our W.I. The latest news was given for our involvement with Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall’s 90th Anniversary Celebrations later this month, when we will be giving out information on our meetings and activities. We all really enjoyed this evening’s flower arranging demonstrations by Pat George and Rachel Sherwin from Ashtead Flower Arrangement Group, showing what we could achieve with items we had at home or could easily source, and flowers which were readily available from local shops. There was a stunning collection of red tulips, an unusual and dainty ‘handbag’ shaped display of mixed flowers & greenery, an Easter ‘flow’ of spring flowers & chocolate eggs, and finally an unusual display of tall Phormium leaves with groups of a few similarly coloured flowers. At the same time we heard about the various prestigious places where the group have displayed and the awards they have been given. We hope some members will be able to see their work at the Wisley Flower Show in September. Everyone was very pleased to have arrangement tips and much advice about prolonging the life of flowers & foliage with how best to present them. To our delight the displays were offered for our evening’s raffle, so some members were able to enjoy these at home as well. Back to W.I. events, we have some outings to look forward to, including The Albert Hall, and the Theatre at Sonning. Information was given about our many sub-groups which take place during the month, along with our come-if-you-can local lunch. A competition will be held next month, Wednesday 2nd April, for a Victoria Sponge decorated for Easter, and our speaker will be Faith Powell, on ‘Behind the Scenes at TV Quiz Shows. Chernobyl Children Life Line – Mid-Surrey Link Hosts and supports needed Could you welcome two Belarusian or Ukrainian children into your home and invite them to share in your life for two weeks this summer? The children come to the UK for a four-week recuperative break from the after-effects of the Chernobyl disaster. A four-week break from radiation, eating nourishing food and breathing clean air, is believed to improve their health significantly, by giving their immune systems a chance to recover and to increase their life expectancy by up to two years. We are urgently seeking volunteers living within easy reach of Epsom and Ashtead to act as hosts, or to support a host, for two weeks between 18th July and 15th August 2014. Trinity School Pupils no longer lost for words! In February, Leatherhead Rotary Club were delighted to present almost 60 copies of the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary to Year 6 pupils at Leatherhead Trinity School.

‘Dictionary 4 Life’ is a special project set up by the Rotary Club of Battersea, Brixton and Clapham in conjunction with Usborne Publishing Ltd as part of Rotary International’s global literacy campaign. Every dictionary is personalised with the recipient’s name, together with the name of the Rotary Club that donated it and the date it was presented. There is also a special page at the back of each dictionary where pupils can collect each other’s autographs.

Grant Scheme Now Open to Mole Valley Businesses Small and medium-sized businesses in Mole Valley planning to expand and create new jobs, but finding it difficult to raise the finance required, can now apply for a Business Growth Grant of up to 25% of the total project cost. The grant could be between £5,000 and £100,000. The Business Growth Grant programme is offered by the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). This organisation is a partnership between local authorities and businesses and works to improve economic prosperity in a number of areas in the South East by helping businesses to grow. Mole Valley and a number of other areas recently became eligible for the Business Growth Grant programme after it was allocated an additional £930,000. The programme is aimed at businesses wishing to expand or diversify. Grants may be spent on a wide range of eligible items, including research and development, innovation and product/service development, penetration into new markets, skills development, plant and equipment, business premises and other capital items. Grants of a higher value than £100,000 may be awarded where a greater impact on employment growth can be shown. To apply, businesses must complete an ‘expression of interest’ form which Coast to Capital will review to decide whether the business will be invited to make a full application. Council Invites Views on Future of Pippbrook Mole Valley District Council is launching a consultation to run until 10th April 2014, inviting views from all residents on the future of MVDC’s ‘Pippbrook’ site in Dorking. The site at Pippbrook currently accommodates a number of different areas/functions: a) the Mole Valley District Council civic offices, (including car parking); b) the currently vacant, Grade II* listed Pippbrook House; c) public open space and recreational facilities. The Council is facing important decisions regarding the costs of running and maintaining the civic office building; the preservation and future use of Pippbrook House; and the future use of other parts of the site. The Ashtead Friday Market is holding a Spring Special on 4th April following the success of the Christmas Specials. Entry is free and refreshments will be available. The market opens at 9am and runs to 12.30pm. We will have all your favourite stalls including cakes, plants, collectables, handicrafts, cake-stands, glass, china, bric-a-brac, haberdashery, wooden gifts, books, toys, and all sorts of cards including handmade, photographic, Phoenix and some from just 30p! We will also have many Easter gifts. Charity stalls do well with excellent marmalade sold for funds for Epsom Hospital. The market overall raises funds for the RNLI, who have been really busy lately, and last year we were able to give them £2,088 which was marvellous. Bike Ride in memory of a French Fireman A group of 10 firefighters from Triel are proposing to cycle 355 kilometres along the "Green Avenue" from Triel to Leatherhead and on to London between Tuesday 1 April and Sunday 6 April 2014. They will arrive at Leatherhead Fire Station on Friday 4 April, to be greeted by Eddie Roberts, the Divisional Manager for the Fire Service, and members of Leatherhead’s Twinning Association, the Friends of Triel. We are also keen to involve the Chairman of Mole Valley as the cyclists are bringing a Trophy which they wish to present to either the Council, or to the Leatherhead firemen themselves. The twinning association will also present a trophy to the French firemen in return. This bike ride is the latest in a series of challenges undertaken by the French firemen in memory of one of their young members, Benoit Boscariol, who died in 2012 at the age of 22. John Craig – Vicar of St. Mary’s Church Fetcham (1836-1839) and Inventor of the Craig Telescope

John Craig MA

On the 31st December 1805 John Craig was born at Fescati, County Dublin, Ireland. He was educated by his Scottish father, Rev. R. Craig at his father's scholastic institution for gentlemen. Later he continued his education at Trinity College, Dublin, where he took his BA at the age of 21. He was ordained a deacon in 1829 and a Priest in 1830. In 1834 he graduated at Cambridge with an MA. His first wife, Alley, died of cancer in Hastings. Later that year he married Jane Helena Johnstone. She was the youngest daughter of the Rev. James Johnstone and had a personal fortune of £56,000 a considerable sum at that time. In December1836 he was appointed vicar of Fetcham in Surrey. It was here that his love for things “beautiful” was to take him on a life of refurbishment and building. He had the windows altered from square ones to a more sympathetic Norman-style. His time at Fetcham was short lived, in 1839 he was appointed vicar of All Saints church in Leamington, and began his involvement with the National Schools.

In 1847 at his wealthiest, he appoints "Collectors" to canvas for funds to rebuild All Saints church, destined to be one of the biggest churches in the country even though the proposed central tower and spire were never built. He had a love of sailing his yacht was called - The Black Dwarf. Between 1850 and 1851 he began initial work on his telescope project. The lens was started. Preliminary designs were started on the "monster telescope". The Telescope was built and opened on Wandsworth Common in 1852. However, two years later 1854 criticism of his telescope's performance forced him to abandon the project. His only son, Robert, dies aged 20 as does his beloved wife – Helena. In 1856 he was imprisoned for over a month in Warwick jail for an alleged misappropriation of funds during the building of All Saints Church, Leamington. In 1859 he married his third wife, Jane Goodchild Percival on 3rd March. His telescope falls into disuse about this time and is dismantled, leaving just the tower. 1869 aged 64 he retires from All Saints as vicar and a year later Jane dies. Around 1871 the telescope tower is demolished, the land returned to the common. He died 30th June 1877, 5,000 people attended his funeral. Goff Powell – With acknowledgement to various web sites

Transition Ashtead Working towards a sustainable Ashtead

The sustainable management of Ashtead Common Ashtead Common is a 500 acre National Nature Reserve on a south-facing slope north of Lower Ashtead. It's a public open space owned and managed by the City of London Corporation since 1990. Visitors will be struck by its natural beauty and an over-riding sense of stepping back in time. The Common has provided locals with physical recreation and a sense of mental well-being for many years and the challenge for the current ranger team is to ensure that this local resource can provide these benefits for many years to come. It became common land long before the City acquired it. In the past goats, pigs cattle and sheep grazed on it, producing milk, cheese and meat for the local consumption. Local fires would have been fuelled with cut branches. Over 1,100 ancient pollarded oak trees remain, demonstrating the need for grazing with wood harvesting. Pollarding (cutting above animal height) allows the new shoots of a cut tree to grow out of reach of the nibbling mouths of browsing livestock. Sustainable care means that any current use has low impact and does not reduce the potential for it to be used in the future. Although the soil is heavy clay, we are proud of the good condition of the paths in winter, churned only by footfall and the pressure of bikes and horses on the rides Adrian and Dave stacking firewood tractors aren't used from about midSeptember until late May The Common promotes eco-friendly pursuits, birdwatching, walking, cycling, running and horse -riding, whilst activities such as motorbike riding and quad bike riding are not permitted, preserving the land in good repair. The Common is once again a timber resource; by restoring the valuable scrub and wood pasture habitats, we generate many tonnes of timber. The volunteers use it for their own fires, and local fire wood merchants collect many trailer loads. Milled oak is made into waymarking posts, and many of our fence posts have been fashioned by our own hands. Hazelwood is passed to our neighbouring volunteers on Epsom Common to make high grade BBQ charcoal, sold locally to benefit local conservation work! Low-impact management is a constant theme - we limit car parking and are proud that most of our conservation volunteers walk or cycle to Thursday tasks. The local Ashtead 10km run each September is a nationally-recognised eco-friendly event! We are looking at all ways to significantly reduce our fuel consumption in our offices as well as erecting 26 solar panels on the roof. We plan to use heavy horses to extract this winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s timber and who knows - one day there may even be local meat available from future grazing of the Common! Ashtead Common must be a living resource for local people. If we can combine havens for wildlife with recreational resources for people whilst harvesting natural resources from it in a sustainable way then we will have set it up for future local people to enjoy and use. Bringing Up Babies By Pippa Greenwood

A visit to any nursery or garden centre at this time of year will reveal a brilliant array of herbaceous perennials. Right now they might be small and not look particularly enticing but just take a look at the illustration on the label and you will see that these small plants have great potential. They’re also great value, usually somewhere around the £1.50-£2.50 mark. It’s essential that newly planted perennials are given that little bit of extra tender loving care. Small plants such as these are more likely to be prone to any weather extremes and even plants in larger pots should be well established. When you ease the plants out of their pots, if you see a really plentiful supply of roots that usually means you have purchased a good plant. Check the plant labels to see the ultimate spread of the plant. For the best effect you generally want to grow several individuals of the same species and I suggest you choose an odd number, perhaps three, or five for a much larger garden, as this invariably makes a better display than if even numbers of plants are used. It may be tempting to plant too close and although this will provide a better looking display initially, over-crowded plants are less likely to become well established, will have to be moved in the near future and in the meantime will be more prone to numerous diseases.

suffer from drought. With landscape fabric this is not a problem. I’m a great fan of copperimpregnated and coated fabrics as these help to keep weeds and slugs and snails at bay. Once you have dug over the whole bed, then it’s well worthwhile adding a general fertilizer. If you notice that the soil is on the heavy side, I suggest incorporating plenty of bulky organic matter and grit. Similarly, if the soil is excessively dry, then you could try to improve its texture by incorporating large quantities of any good bulky organic matter. Once the plants are in position, firm the soil thoroughly and do take care not to compact it if it’s on the heavy side. Regular watering is essential and if the ground is not already quite moist, you should water the plants in well. Check them regularly for signs of any pests or diseases as it will be much easier to stop something in its tracks if you start to take action early on in the season.

It’s also essential to plant at the correct depth. With herbaceous perennials you need to make sure that you place the plant in the ground to the same depth that it was in the container and although you may decide to mulch the soil afterwards, do remember not to mulch right up to or over the crown of the plant, as this is likely to lead to poor growth and maybe even dieback. Weed control is essential and you can either hoe regularly between the plants to prevent the weeds causing competition or you can use a deep mulch or perhaps even place squares of landscape fabric or black polythene around each plant. Do remember however, if you use polythene, rain will not be able to penetrate through it and so the plants are more likely to
