s I write this note we are getting ready to spend a couple of days in Bruges to celebrate my birthday. I have it on very good authority that the national foods of Belgium (other than beer and mussels of course) are chocolate and chips. Needless to say I’m going to love Bruges, what’s not to like? Ashtead Community Vision has established a forum to broadly represent the community with regard to the government’s Localism Act, which was set up to enable communities to have a say in the development of their areas. Mole Valley’s housing target is to build over 2200 homes by 2026 which will require some difficult and uncomfortable decisions to be made over the coming years. ACV is holding an open day at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall on Saturday 27th April. More details can be found on page 18. On page 48 you will find an article submitted by The David Sheldrake Wildlife Trust reporting on the plight of hundreds of elephants and rhinos in Africa the worrying statistic that the African elephant will be wiped out within 12 years if current poaching levels continue. This terrible statistic can be halted with your help. 2013 sees the first Leatherhead Food Festival and so many exciting events and demonstrations have been organised around the town on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th April, more info can be found on pages 42 and 43. I can’t wait to pop along and see what’s on offer and also find out more about our local producers. The lovely Becky over at Bocketts Farm Park informs me that they are expecting the arrival of over 300 lambs in the next few weeks. It’s always one of the first signs of spring when we see little lambs out in the fields gambolling and having fun. Shops & Services As we approach April I think of a spring clean, financially of course, no-one can fail to have seen what has been happening to deposit rates over the last few months, they have simply fallen off a cliff ! And over the last few days there has been a huge fuss at how one company who specialises in representing the older generation has been charging the earth to its existing insurance customers so:

Much of this brings a focus on the land on either side of the M25, between Ashtead and Leatherhead. This is within the Green Belt, and is currently under review. The Council has invited developers to put forward schemes for this site, with a view to selling or leasing the land. But to make it large enough to be attractive for a developer, they have suggested that the allotment gardens on the south side of Barnett Wood Lane should be transferred to open land on the Ashtead side of the Motorway also in the Green Belt, and to the north of the railway line. For the hundred or so allotment holders, most of whom walk to their allotments from home, this is devastating news.

An Eventful Year Ashtead's Rotary Club has been extremely active over the last few months organising outings for our senior citizens, Christmas Street Collections, supporting the Ashtead Traders' evening, joining Inner Wheel for their party to raise funds for 'Crisis at Christmas' and much else besides. Here are a few more of our activities and the essential support we have provided.

Santa at Woodlands School

This year we donated £10,000 to Woodlands School to allow them to buy a minibus which is adapted to carry their largest wheelchair but is small enough to allow use of a regular driving licence. It has a modern low emissions engine so it can be taken into London without penalty. We helped their open day by running the BBQ and one of our members, Alan Howell, took the part of Santa Claus. The youngsters there so enjoyed meeting him.

Membership of the Rotary Club is not all hard graft and serious obligation. A group of us made a trip to London (pic right), organised by member Achim Vogt, to celebrate the Oktoberfest which is held in Munich every year. Traditional German beer and a meal of Wurst, Sauerkraut & Kartoffeln was served by waitresses in their equally traditional dirndls all to the accompaniment of a guitar and accordion group.

As Christmas approached we organised a showing of the film 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' (Maggie Smith & Judy Dench) for 60 or so of our Senior Citizens and laid on an afternoon Tea Party with entertainment (see left). Our Street Collections in The Street, Craddocks Parade and Barnett Wood Lane raised a little over £1600 Joy Wemms & Nicole Smith with three seniors at the film show At the time of writing the purple crocuses are just coming into bloom on the corner next to The Pond (pictured right). These were planted by Rotary with the help of children from Barnett Wood Infants School to mark the final stages of our campaign to rid the world of Polio . . . . . purple to symbolise the dye which is applied to a finger of an inoculated child so that none get missed and none are treated twice. Only three countries now have the wild polio virus still endemic. Just £1 will fund the inoculation of 5 vulnerable children. Calling all charities and car boot sale fans! On Sunday 23rd of June the Hawthorn Leslie 3837 Preservation Society are to hold the first of what we hope will be many, BIG CHARITY FUNDRAISING SHOWS in the Mole Barn at the Leatherhead Leisure Centre. All charities and other non profit making groups will be very welcome to hire a pitch (10 ft x 6 ft with a 6 ft x 2 ft table) for the day for only £10! Also, if you are a fan of the good old car boot shows, you may be interested in hiring a pitch for a bric-a-brac stall to bring in some extra housekeeping or holiday money, you also only need to pay £10! So, if you want to raise some money for your favourite charity, school, club or organisation, just send an email to: brian.davis1947@btinternet.com for details and an application form. If you run a full or part time business and would like to either sell or advertise your wares or services, you will also be made very welcome. A trade stall is £40 for the basic pitch but we can negotiate with you if you want something larger. We have contacted a vast number of charities to date to see if they would like a stall and quite a few of them have said that they would like to come but are unable to do so due to the lack of volunteer staff. We would therefore like to ask you all, if you would like to join our ‘’Helping Hands’’ team to offer those charities quite literally ‘’a helping hand’’ to run their stalls, either for them, or alongside a regular member. We also require a few volunteers to help us on the day. ...and now for something slightly different!

Not only do we have the above, but we are also running a SPONSORED TREASURE HUNT for the benefit of any of the charities in the hall on the day, which will take in parts of Surrey and Sussex. A list of charities will be made available later on for you to choose from when we know precisely who is coming. The cost of entry will be £5 and all of the fees will be used to provide prizes for the winners. If you wish to enter but cannot obtain any sponsorship, then do not worry too much about it, you can enter just for the fun of it but obviously we would ideally prefer sponsored vehicles. You may wish to consider taking passengers with you that are less fortunate than yourselves, such as the disabled, elderly people or recuperating members of the armed forces from Headley Court and Tyrwhitt House for a pleasant day out, if they would like to of course! All funds raised by the organising society will go towards the full restoration of the old blue steam engine (see below) that once stood at the rear of the centre. Although we only paid the sum of £1 for the engine, it will cost many thousands of pounds to get it back in steam again. So, if you can come along on June 23rd to raise some funds for yourselves, you will also be helping us to reach our goal! The engine can be viewed at Isfield on the Lavender Line in East Sussex. The event is a little way off as yet but if you would like to meet some of our team beforehand, we will have our show stand at the Surrey Society of Model Engineers open day at Mill Lane, Leatherhead on Good Friday (29th March) and also we will be at Ashtead Village day event on 8th June.

The Easter Egg and the Fool This was going to be an unusual Easter Monday.The joys of over consumption of chocolate were to be combined with the joys of April Fools Day and the children were determined to make the most of the coincidence, especially as their father was going to be at home.

She decided to abandon the idea of a cooked breakfast and carefully put both boxes back into the fridge. Sam and the children came downstairs, soaking wet but laughing. Sam announced that he’d love to have a big Easter Monday brunch and suggested fried eggs and bacon.

Sam was the world’s biggest practical joker and April Fool’s Day was one of the highlights of his year. His favourite hoax of all time was the 1957 BBC clip, narrated by Richard Dimbleby where they filmed ‘spaghetti trees’. He showed it to Ben, Daniel and Sarah when they were younger and even spent an afternoon with them at the garden centre, looking for young spaghetti trees to buy.

Ruth said that she really couldn’t be bothered to cook today after their big Easter Sunday lunch the day before and suggested that he take over. Sam looked disappointed and enthusiastically tried to persuade his wife to cook him some eggs but Ruth was adamant. Sam then had an idea. He would cook, but first he would show them a special ability that he had.

Another year he came home with a tattoo of Popeye on his upper arm and managed to convince Ruth that it was genuine for almost a week.

He took the egg box out of the fridge and invited his family to sit down at the kitchen table. He opened the box and checked inside. Sam then took out an egg and dramatically held it above Daniel’s head. He dared Daniel to let him crack it open but his son, quite understandably, refused. He then went round the table, repeating his challenge to each child and then finally to his quizzical wife. Everybody declined, in spite of Ruth’s strangely fervent assurances that it would be an ‘eggcellent’ hair conditioner.

The children loved and hated his tricks in equal measure and tried their hardest to retaliate. They put clingfilm over the loo seat, whoopee cushions on the chairs and fake dog poo on the living room carpet. Ruth found it all completely exhausting but enjoyed watching the children joining forces to try and trick their Dad. Big investment in Leatherhead Tennis Club Over recent years £250,000 has been invested in new facilities at Leatherhead Tennis Club. As a result, the club now boasts an excellent clubhouse, two new artificial clay courts and four resurfaced hard courts with floodlights. The club offers a year-round range of activities including adult and junior coaching, ‘turn-up and play’ club sessions for varying levels, team matches, tournaments and many social events. In a recent survey, members cited ‘friendliness’ as one of the club’s top features. The club is keen to encourage youngsters to take up the sport and so its coaches regularly visit local schools. Adult and junior coaching sessions are popular and well attended. There is a successful Saturday ‘rusty player’ programme to help adults return to the game and this year there will also be a coaching programme for ‘midweek Mums’. Located in Cannon Grove, Fetcham, the annual Open Day takes place on Saturday April 20th from 2-5pm. The club welcomes new members, so come along to see the new facilities and find out about programmes and membership. If you fancy hitting a ball, wear your trainers or tennis shoes - the club can provide tennis rackets and other players! If you can’t make the open day, come and speak to a coach on a Tuesday evening (adults) or Saturday morning (juniors). Leatherhead Tennis Club is a Community Amateur Sports Club run on a not-for-profit basis by its members. Annual membership fees are highly competitive and there is no additional joining fee. New or rusty players who are uncertain about membership are welcome to join a coaching programme first. Mixed Blessings We have found much interest in courses where two or three tutors are gathered together to discuss a subject from different perspectives, in particular history, literature and art appreciation. So our 2013 – 2014 programme, starting in September, will include several such five-week courses. The first of these – Arthurian Legends (Wednesday afternoons) considers the stories of the Knights of the Round Table, of Galahad and the Holy Grail, of Tristan and Isolt, of the Lady of Shalott, from their medieval backgrounds, through the poetry of Thomas Malory and Alfred Lord Tennyson, to their depiction by William Morris, Holman Hunt and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. There will also be a visit to the House of Lords to see William Dyce’s paintings of Le Morte D’Arthur. The next, on Monday afternoons, is inspired by the recent discovery of the bones of Richard III, the self-styled Sun of York. Was he, as Shakespeare portrays him, the murderer of the Princes in the Tower, and other members of royalty who ‘disappeared’, or a would-be social reformer, cut down in his prime by a cousin (Henry Tudor) with a somewhat tenuous claim to the throne? In the same series we are running a course on the Bloomsbury Group, looking at their lives and loves, and their achievements. Virginia Woolf’s very personal A Room of One’s Own will be studied, as will her sister Vanessa Bell’s works of art.

Ashtead WI - March 2013 Meeting We were very pleased to welcome yet another new member to our March meeting, and our Treasurer announced that we now have 50 members in our W.I. This was a particularly happy and bright evening as we had been asked to anticipate Easter with an array of Easter Bonnets, so an abundance of flowers, eggs, chickens! and lots of amusement. Unfortunately our scheduled speaker was unable to join us, but we were very well entertained by Mr David Allen on ‘Murder in Victorian Times’ with three true stories researched at The National Archives and original newspapers, with the appropriate bloodthirsty accounts of the miscreants’ activities. One was about a Daniel Good in 1832 hanged for murder, and that Scotland Yard was eventually begun as a result of his detection and capture. Another intriguing story was about a Mrs Thomas, killed and dismembered by her housekeeper, and where all the various parts of the body went to! The third was of Madeleine Smith who had an affair with a man who wouldn’t return her love letters on her marriage to another. She tried to poison him with arsenic three times, but surprisingly was ‘found not proven’ after his death. Quite a lot is planned for our future events, including a visit to the Chelsea Hospital, and another to Arundel for the carpet of flowers at Corpus Christi. Members are welcome to join our sub-groups for Reading, Theatre, Craft, Scrabble, Lunch & the new Walking group. We would welcome visitors to our 3rd April meeting, 7.30pm for 7.45pm, when Mrs Jean Haynes will be telling us about Life as a Lady Bailiff.

Dorking Quilters met in March for a sewing evening. Some members brought their own sewing, and others were involved in completing the group quilt which we have been making over the past months. Next month, on 9th April, we have Liza Jones of the Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild coming to talk to us. Our meeting is as usual at the Friends’ Meeting House, Butterhill, South Street, and begins at 7.30 for 8pm.

The museum will be officially opened by the Chairman of Mole Valley Council, Councillor Caroline Salmon. Special guest is renowned folk singer, Shirley Collins MBE, who will be opening a display about the song ‘The Poor Murdered Woman’ which was written by James Fairs, an agricultural labourer (of Fairs Rd, off Kingston Road, which was subsequently named after him), about an unknown woman who was found murdered on Leatherhead Common in 1834. James Fairs’ grandson opened Fairs greengrocers in Leatherhead which traded in the High Street until the 1970s.

Could wearing glasses be causing you neck and upper back issues? clearly past the edges of your glasses? If the answer is 'yes', then your glasses could be affecting the structure of your neck, leading to functional problems which cause pain.

In recent months we have seen an increase in the number of patients who have come to our clinic suffering with neck, shoulder and upper back pain. A number of these patients wear glasses.

Common symptoms are: • Neck and shoulder stiffness and/or aching, especially after sitting for long periods of time e.g. driving, sitting at the computer or reading a newspaper. • A sharp stabbing pain in the middle of the shoulder blades. • Arm pain such as aching, pins and needles, weakness – this indicates a nerve irritation which may be due to mal-positioning of the spinal bones. • Headaches. The use of multifocal glasses affects our stepping accuracy, meaning we are less able to judge steps as accurately, leading to an increased load on one or more of our joints. This puts strain on the joints. Another study has shown that those above the age of 65 years old are particularly at risk of multifocal glasses affecting their gait.

Campbell Court, Dorking Road is a modern block of flats built on the site of an early 20th century house called Prior’s Ford. During the last years of his life, it was the home of Donald Campbell, CBE. By beating his father Sir Malcolm Campbell’s records of the 1930s, Donald Campbell on the 17th July 1964 became the fastest man on land 403.10 mph at Lake Eyre, Australia, and in the same year 31st December on Lake Dumbleyung, Western Australia he achieved the fasted water speed record 276.33 mph. He was born on the 23rd March 1921at Kingston-upon-Thames. His untimely death was on Coniston Water in January 1967 when his craft Bluebird disintegrated while achieving a speed of over 300 mph. His daughter Gina carried on the family tradition. In 1984 she gained the ladies’ world water-speed record of 122.85 mph off shore power boat racing in yet another Bluebird. In 1985 she presented the Leatherhead Museum with the wheel of her father’s car. Inner Wheel Backpacks for Charity The Ladies of The Ashtead Club of Inner Wheel (pictured left) spent an enjoyable day together packing a total of 35 children’s school backpacks to send to the Charity ‘Mary’s Meals’. The charity supports chronically poor children in Malawi, Liberia and Haiti, by providing a substantial mid-day meal, thus encouraging school attendance and education, an escape route from poverty. The backpacks include useful items such as stationery items and simple garments for school wear, to ensure that all children are adequately equipped. The ‘Packing day’ was held to celebrate “Inner Wheel Day”, when the emphasis is to fulfill the Inner Wheel Objectives, namely to promote true friendship, encourage the ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding. The Club is also grateful to friends and residents of Ashtead who contributed generously to the appeal for funds and items for the backpacks. Inner Wheel continues to meet monthly to promote the ideals of Inner Wheel and raise money for local and overseas charities.

Tolly, Misty & Socks are looking for a new home. Misty & Tolly are both approximately 16 years old; Tolly is a bit of an old warrior (but not aggressive!) hence his battered ears,; Misty is also 16 but he is still extremely active & playful; Socks (8) is a quiet little boy, a sweet natured, gentle cat and quite affectionate once he gets to know you. He spends a lot of time gazing into the garden. This trio had elderly devoted owners who sadly had to move into a housing association flat where they were unable to take their beloved pets; and all are missing each other terribly. Tolly, Misty and Socks really deserve a 2nd chance â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they need a quiet home with a garden and without young children.

Grow Your Own Veg By Pippa Greenwood As the new gardening year is upon us, why not have a go at growing your own veg because it doesn’t need to be difficult and has the potential to be one of the most productive and fun things you’ve ever done. Home grown food tastes better, uses little if any air miles, can save you a packet and is enormously rewarding because you’re getting the top end of the market produce. Remember to grow what you like and what your garden can grow well - this may take some experimenting, but don’t be afraid to admit that some things are trickier than others in your plot. If you’re an organic gardener or you simply want to produce pesticide free vegetables, you might need to spend more time thinking about what to grow and how you can best nurture it so that pests, diseases and other problems take a back seat. *Seed and plant catalogues are now more likely to let you know which varieties are relatively pest or disease resistant.

Working towards sustainable consumption A tribute to the River Mole - how clean is our Valley? In 2003 the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) became part of UK law. It will help protect and enhance the quality of surface freshwater including lakes, streams and rivers, ground-waters and their dependant ecosystems. The River Mole rises near Gatwick Airport and flows NW through Surrey for 80 km to join the Thames near Hampton Court. A couple of months ago, I went to a conference organised by Surrey Wildlife Trust (SWT) about the River Mole ‘system’ which includes all its tributaries.The idea is to involve local groups concerned about the environment to help improve the ecology of the brooks and streams which feed into the Mole. Reading Wikipedia, you would think that the River Mole is wonderfully clean and pollution free but sadly that is not the case. According to the Environment Agency much of the Mole’s Ecological Status is classifed as ‘poor’. Pollution comes from many sources including agricultural run-off, illegal dumping of waste and streams blocked by debris and rubbish. Concrete culverts can sometimes be improved by creating soil bank edges planted with vegetation which is a great help to wildlife. Great work has been done on the Rye Brook on Ashtead Common and more recently with help from SWT and volunteers to the stretch across the Rye Meadow project. The Rye runs under the M25 (not sure how we deal with that) and emerges as a stream along the left of the entrance road to Tesco from the roundabout at Kingston Road (photo above). The Strode is another Mole tributary, rising in Pachesham Park, going under the M25, then crossing the public footpath in Teazle Wood. You can stride across a small tributary to the Rye using the bridge, see photo left. But sadly an ongoing problem is the rubbish that gets dumped daily. One of the long-term aims of the Friends of Teazle Wood is to clean up these tributaries. In 2011 the UK published its first National Ecosystem Assessment which pointed out how nature provides a wide range of benefits vital for the UK. The benefits derived from improved water quality were found to be a staggering £1.1 billion per year. So this is not just a ‘nice to have’ but it has a positive economic impact as well. The Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) for Mole Valley is urging local residents to be on the lookout following a recent number of handbag thefts across the area.

Throughout the coming year, your local officers continue to work with partner agencies to try to keep the roads in Mole Valley as safe as possible. Regular speed monitoring with Community Speed Watch volunteers continues, as do regular enforcement operations in partnership with VOSA and our Roads Policing Unit. Offences, such as speeding, driving whilst using hand held mobile phones, not wearing seatbelts etc will be targeted, as well as vehicles found to be defective or carry illegal number plates or tinted windows.

These thefts have taken place when the offender spots a handbag on the seat of a vehicle and then opens the door, usually when the victim is still in the car and it is either stopped or is moving at a low speed. The officers from your Safer Neighbourhood Team are urging residents to take sensible precautions to prevent themselves from becoming victims of crime. This includes keeping car doors locked, keeping valuables (including handbags and sat navs) out of sight and not to leave items of any value on the passenger seat, even when you are in the car.

Part of the purpose of these operations is to educate motorists about the importance of adhering to the law, as well as direct enforcement when actual offences have been identified. As a side issue, we would like to appeal to ALL road users, be they motorists or cyclists, to be considerate of each others’ rights to use the highways safely. As a motorist, please don’t be the person to cut up cyclists who are using the highway perfectly legally. Please be patient and considerate as you will then have the right to expect the same behaviour in return. As a cyclist, please don’t be part of a minority who ignore red lights, mount the pavements or ride in an aggressive manner. It gives cyclists in general a bad name and does nothing for the cause of promoting tolerance and co-operation.

These offences have occurred at a number of different locations across Mole Valley - but mainly in or near car parks. The incidents often take place in the evening and the age of the victims has ranged from eighteen to seventy four. Your Safer Neighbourhood Team has been carrying out additional patrols in the affected areas and in other areas which we feel could be potential target locations. The offender is described as a tall white man, of slim build wearing dark clothing including a beanie hat.

Springtime in the garden With Easter upon us most of us will be looking forward to warmer brighter days spent in the garden and with so much to do after a cold winter we will be using electricity at some stage either to tidy up the garden or light some feature, power a fountain or pump or just simply run a cable for when we next need it. But with this sense of seasonal optimism comes a very real threat. Every year 70 people are killed and 350,000 are seriously injured from electrical accidents with 2.5 million British adults saying they have experienced an electric shock at home. And when it comes to using electricity in the garden damp conditions and contact with the ground means that the risk of injury or death from electric shock is greatly increased compared to indoors. Using an RCD is essential.

What is an RCD? If your home was built after January 2008 you will have noticed that your Consumer Unit (this replaces the fuseboard in older houses) is fitted with two devices labelled RCD (which stands for Residual Current Device). These devices are designed to cut off the electrical supply in an instant – typically 25 times faster than a circuit breaker and 100 times faster than a fuse! And their purpose is to save lives.

Houses without RCD’s Almost half of older houses in Britain have no RCD protection. This is why it is vital that an RCD is installed. An electrician registered with a recognized industry organisation such as NICEIC will offer guidance in providing a safe permanent garden supply and assess other household electrical safety issues.
