Conceptual Exploration, Spring 2021 3

Between the Lines | Fall 2021 | 8 Weeks This design aims to fill a hole in a community, and draw people into a place where they can experience the things they love as a community.

Based on the perspective of a aging veteran, this coffee shop centers around a large screen, meant to facilitate group activity, be it movie watching, gaming, discussion, or whatever else the user desires. The amphitheater steps further that pursuit, creating a collective seating design.

Rather than face the world alone, this design gives people the context and comfort of community to anchor them.

The character of the entry sequence is borne out of color and light, lending a texture and warmth to the space that invites interaction and guides the user through its use.

Throughout the space, rounded rectangles guide the user around corners, and encourage the gaze upward. Framing the theatre seating, this form on the stairs facilitates exploration of the mezzanine.

Circulation through this space is an essential part of the design, as customers are moved from the smaller, more individual lounges into the large community theatre space. They are encouraged to find comfort in the environment, but also to explore the possibilities available.

This plan, involving a main floor and a mezzanine above, is heavily influenced by the overhead planes that govern the space. Visible in the mezzanine plan, these overhead planes move the viewer through the space and serve to determine the quality of the space as well, whether it be circulatory or stationary. The language of these lanes is consistent with the concept of the space, and reinforces the activity and community connection intended for the structure within.

The screen that occupies the central dining space serves as a community enrichment tool, offering movie nights, activities, and local news,

Carve | Spring 2022 | 6 Weeks As we explored further into the possibilities of the shop environment and furniture construction, we were tasked with the creation of a coffee table, inspired by a significant furniture design movement, using only traditional joinery. The carve coffee table manifests as a deconstruction of the traditional purpose of a coffee table.

Inspired by the post modern movement, this table invites the user to sit on the floor, to put their feet up, to inhabit the space designated for them. In defiance of traditional etiquette, this coffee table invites informality.

Material and form push and pull at each other within this design, interjecting soft curves into solidity, and comfort where it is unexpected.

Reverence | Spring 2022 | 6 Weeks When presented with a simple truss structure and instructed to experiment with facade, my goal was to see how far I could push it, stressing the confines of enclosure and creating a winery that invites the exterior in.

Conceptually, reverence describes the great history and influence of wine, and encourages a space designed to celebrate the mystery and significance of it. Choices are made to centralize the space, defining clear paths of circulation and areas of appreciation and contemplation.

The simplified truss language that anchors this design appears at the forefront of the site, creating a central datum that unites the spaces to come.

The Narthex

This plan borrows the traditional structure of a church, designating spaces for congregation, for worship, and for reflection, translated to meet the needs of a winery.

The Altar

This design integrates both indoor and outdoor spaces, fragmenting the divide between the two, With the help of a plaster screening structure, the central tasting hall becomes a transition between the solid and the ethereal, as does the tasting bar itself. The outdoor space between the tasting hall and the reserved dining area serves to expand the amenities out into the landscape, creating moment of peace and connection with the land that influences wine so deeply.

This design features a repeated house form, inspired by the shape of the existing trusses and echoed in other design choices. These forms are related to the idea of reverence, focusing the occupants attention on the inhabited central space and the wine they were meant to enjoy there. The central corridor defined by these elements houses circulation outside of the building footprint, and relaxation once inside, serving to both drive the occupant into the space, and reassure them once they arrive.

Even though the space is fragmented, the site still functions as whole, unified by its architectural language.

The Greenhouse | Spring 2022 | 8 Weeks Lighting design in combination with the complexities of retails design takes the stage in this design. We were challenged to design a retails space that included an activity relevant to the items being sold. The route I chose to take centered around the idea of play and social interaction being a cornerstone of a child’s development. Thus I conceived of The Greenhouse, a place for children to flourish, stocked with games and toys that stimulate the brain, as well as play structures that become fertile ground for imagination.

Upon entering, the user is greeting by bright, playful colors and an abundance of natural light. Curved forms and dropped ceiling planes create a landscape of adventure to explore.

Offering direct access from the entrance, the central play structure gets children excited for something tailored to them, and parents can allow them the freedom to explore and make connections independently.

The two play areas that define this design are positioned so that parents can shop while also keeping an eye on their children. The shelves radiate around them while maintaining clear paths of travel, and the curves guide the customers through the space in a natural progression.

Central to this design was the ability for children to interact with other children in a safe and secure setting, something that is somewhat rare in the large city where this design is located. Providing ample space for imagination and interaction allows kids in the city to have the same experiences that kids in rural areas get to have. Parents are given space away from the rabble to supervise, but the structures are for kids alone. Heights are adjusted to better fit them, as well as stairs and climbing elements.

A reading area set towards the back of the store offers a greater sense of privacy and calm, creating a haven for parents to settle with their children.

Collect | Fall 2022 | 12 Weeks An essential part of design is the investigation of how things work together within a space. For this project, we designed a set of items designed to encourage a hobby. Collect investigates the idea of memories as an integral part of the home, and the keeping of them as essential to its functioning.

As such, this design aims to become a home for scrap booking, photo albums, personal letters, and stationary. For those who use these items and these rituals as ways to nourish their families, Collect provides a place of solace.

The forms present within this collection all embody the concept of collection, wrapping and enclosing the elements within. Rounded rectangles defined every planed, removing hard corners and sharp edges. Essential elements are poised slightly offset from their neighbors, offering a lightness to the collection.

As a whole, the collection fits seamlessly together and into the fabric of a home.

Refugee Housing | Fall 2022 | 2 Weeks In the context of a global crisis, housing becomes an essential and controversial debate. Those seeking refuge must rely on the generosity of a foreign land, and those who meet them are asked to put shelve their own worries and anxieties and accept a new normal.

This project is a conceptual solution to refugee housing that integrates pre-fab units into compact neighborhoods designed to integrate seamlessly into the urban fabric of the host city.

Visible here is the configuration of units within a community block. Both one and two story units integrate into a system that can be easily constructed and quickly assembled. The array of options accommodates a greater range of needs appropriate for the variety of people relying on these spaces.

This plan is an example of two prefab frames stitched together to create a single floor plan, as opposed to a stacked, two story option. This plan better suits those with small children who need to keep watch, as well as the elderly and injured.

In contrast, the two story option allows for younger users who might want to keep public and private space separate, to better accommodate guests and maintain their community away from home.

For parents with small children, the simplicity and function of the interior environment offers much more than shelter from the elements. From here, families can move forward.

Forge | Fall 2022 | 10 Weeks This concept is born from the long history of the city and people of Boston, through all their incarnations. All of this history comes together to inspire a design that mimics the ebbs and flows of the city streets, gathering people around courtyards and resources. Historical material is married to a modern color palette, and the wellness and independence of employees is prioritized. Collaboration is celebrated throughout the space, so much so that it begins to define the space. Holistically, this workplace is built on and around the needs of the individual as an essential thread in the fabric of industry.

This exploded view of the core of the plan allows for visualization of the many different environments designed for a variety of work styles. Both communal and individual work spaces are present, along with a multitude of postures and organizations.

The work cafe combines all the flexibility present throughout the project into one central space, encouraging employees to gather in whatever way feels most comfortable to them.
