Music Notes by: Ashley Sosis There is nothing subtle or understated about Palm Sunday. We begin our service outside to commemorate the triumphal entry of our Lord into Jerusalem, we sing hymns and anthems about “shouting” and “crying” Hosanna, and we read a scripted version of the Passion (this year is from Matthew) and in doing so we officially open the Holiest of Weeks in the liturgical year. Most Christian worship on Palm Sunday knowing the whole story— what happens on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. We feel empathy with our Lord, an empathy that contrasts to the din of the crowd greeting Jesus as he enters into Jerusalem. Isn’t that the line we walk as Christians in this noisy world? A Good Friday hymn written by Francis Bland Tucker beautifully sets this feeling. “Alone thou goest forth, O Lord, in sacrifice to die; is this thy sorrow naught to us who pass unheeding by? Our sins, not thine, thou bearest, Lord; make us thy sorrow feel, till through our pity and our shame love answers love’s appeal. This is earth’s darkest hour but thou dost light and life restore; then let all praise be given thee who livest evermore!
