PAUL THOMAS, ORGANIST

Paul Thomas is the Organist & Choral Ministry Director of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke & St. Paul in Charleston, SC. He earned the Master of Music degree in organ performance and Certificate in Church Music Studies from the Yale School of Music and Institute of Sacred Music, where he studied organ with Thomas Murray and organ improvisation with Jeffrey Brillhart. While at Yale, he received the Richard Paul DeLong prize for the student "whose work best exemplifies the dedication and the use of those special gifts required of practicing church musicians."

His undergraduate studies were at Furman University, where he studied organ with Charles Tompkins.

Paul has given solo organ recitals throughout the eastern United States, notably at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, Woolsey Hall at Yale, Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, and Washington National Cathedral.

An accomplished choral musician, Paul conducted the professional choir of the Episcopal Church at Yale for three years, and he has sung as a solo baritone with The King’s Counterpoint and the Pro Musica chamber ensemble of the Yale Camerata. He has accompanied choirs on domestic and international tours, including weeklong residencies at Ely and Wells Cathedrals in England. He frequently accompanies the College of Charleston Concert Choir, The King’s Counterpoint, and the Taylor Festival Choir, with whom he has recently performed Duruflé’s Requiem and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. He received second prize in the Schoenstein Competition in the Art of Organ Accompaniment.

Paul is a committed teacher of young musicians, having founded the Cathedral Choir of Boys & Girls, affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music. He teaches private music lessons and has adjudicated the Young Organist Competition of the Columbia, SC American Guild of Organists. He is on staff at Charleston Southern University as a vocal accompanist.

Who is the AGO? We are a group of organists, choir directors and other organ fans in the Grand Strand area of South Carolina.

The American Guild of Organ (AGO) is a national organization which promotes the organ in its historic and evolving roles, encourages excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and provides a forum for mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members.

Our chapter was formed in 2010 and welcomes new members. We have a lively program of activities, including 'organ crawls', regular meetings (with food!), music try outs, and workshops: and everyone appreciates the fellowship of our meetings. From our Dean Welcome to tonight’s program! Our chapter brings together clergy, organists, and lovers of organ music in the Grand Strand Region of South Carolina to provide programs, instruction, and concerts. The fine arts are alive and well in this region with many talented professional and amateur organists. Pedals, Pipes and Pizza Saturday, February 4th, 9-12 am St. Paul’s Church 710 Main St, Conway, SC Hosts: Billy Fallaw and Ashley Sosis

The two hour educational event is open to piano students and other interested students ages 8-18 and will include a hands-on demonstration, an engaging recital, pizza lunch and a chance to play the Casavant Organ at St. Paul’s. The event is free, but a $5 donation per student to cover the cost of the pizza lunch is appreciated. Each participating student must register to ensure an accurate head count.
