Maundy Thursday Holy Eucharist, Rite I April 2nd, 2015 + 7:00 p.m.

Music Notes by: Ashley Sosis Today’s service features a cappella masterpieces by William Byrd (c. 1540-1623), Felice Anerio (1560–1615)and Thomas Wheelkes (1576-1623). Though these three composers lived during the same time, their lives couldn’t be more different! Anerio was an Italian priest, Byrd was a persecuted Catholic in Elizabethan England, and Wheelkes was an organist and choir instructor at Chichester Cathedral. Regardless of the context in which they wrote, they each skillfully and beautifully set phrases that dwelt not on the sorrow of the passion, but rather on the salvation that it brought (“…may it be for us a foretaste of heaven…”, “…therefore God exhalted him and gave him a name above all names”, “…Minds with holy grace are filled and the future glories promised us.”).

The only parts of this service that will be accompanied by the pipe organ are our two hymns, so that we can save our joy in the resurrection for Easter Sunday, but also so that we can experience the sweetness the disciples may have experienced in singing a hymn together at the last supper (Matthew 26:30, Mark 14:26). Holy Week 2015 Continues tonight with a vigil after the service and this weekend’s Good Friday and Easter Sunday services.

Tonight Prayer Vigil in the Chapel following the service Please consider joining us in the chapel from 9:00pm and 10:00pm for a special time of prayer.

The Chapel will be open for prayer from 9:00 till noon on Good Friday as well. For safety reasons, please plan on using the main entrance on Good Friday. These are especially holy times of prayer as we remember Jesus’ suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane. The reserved sacrament will be present on the table for these times, so please enter in a reverent manner.

Good Friday April 3rd, 2015 Prayer Vigil in the Chapel begins at 9am and ends at noon 12:15 pm – Good Friday Service

In our traditional Good Friday mid-day service, the St. Augustine Choir will chant Lodovico Viadana’s setting of the Passion according to John and offer another passiontide masterpiece by Felice Anerio, “Crux Fidelis”. This powerful service will be unaccompanied.

7:00 pm – Seven Last Words of Christ Service The seven last words of Christ provide a structure to a program that resembles a choral Lessons and Carols service. Prayers, readings and choral anthems are offered in response to each of the seven phrases. Most of the service will take place in darkness.

Easter Day April 5th, 2015 8:00 – Rite I (Chapel) 9:00 – Contemporary Worship 11:00 – Traditional Worship

The 11am service will feature the St. Augustine choir, Trinity’s St. Gregory Youth Choir and St. Cecilia Children’s Choir accompanied by the Canterbury Bells Handbell Choir and the High Tide Brass Quintet. A host of joyous Easter morning anthems will include a movement from a Bach Cantata as well as festive concertato arrangements of beloved congregational hymns.

The Trinity office will be closed on Easter Monday, April 6th.
