FOR THIS PROJECT, MY PARTNER AND I WERE GIVEN THE FACADE OF A MICRO HOTEL IN AUSTIN WITH DESIGN FREEDOM IN THE INTERIOR. WE WERE INSPIRED BY MORROCAN ARCHITECTURE, SPECIFICALLY THE ROYAL MANSOUR MARRKECH. THE BASIS OF THIS PROJECT CENTERED AROUND THE DESIGN OF OUR SCREEN, WHICH CREATES A LIGHTING EFFECT IN ALL AREAS OF THE HOTEL. THE LIGHTING EVOKES A SENSE OF WONDER AND ENTICEMENT, DRAWING THE VISITOR’S ATTENTION AND INVITING THEM TO FEEL LIKE A PART OF THE SPACE. WE PLACED THE SCREEN TO ENCOURAGE ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN VISITORS OF THE HOTEL AND THE SPACE THROUGH THE USAGE OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS. THE FIRST FLOOR BALANCES BOTH PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SPACE, ALLOWING VISITORS TO LOUNGE, STUDY, AND CONNECT WITH OTHERS. THE FOCUS OF THE BUILDING IS THE CENTRAL STAIRCASE WHERE LIGHT IS ABLE TO FLOW DOWN THROUGH THE SKYLIGHT, THROUGH A SCREEN AND PROJECT SHADOWS TO THE STAIRS AND SEATING AREA. THE SECOND FLOOR HAS BEEN DESIGNED THOUGHTFULLY BASED ON FURNITURE MEASUREMENTS AND SMOOTH CIRCULATION AROUND THE CENTRAL ATRIUM, ADDING BOTH PRIVACY AND CONNECTION THROUGH THE LAYOUT.






THERE IS A POSITIVE TENSION BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND FLOOR IN THAT BOTH DAYTIME VISITORS AND GUESTS OF THE HOTEL ARE ENCOURGAED TO LOUNGE ON THE STAIRS AND SEATING, BUT ONLY GUESTS OF THE HOTEL MAY VENTURE UPSTAIRS. THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING PROMOTES SOCIAL INTERACTION AND CONVERSATION WHILE THE BACK ALLOWS FOR MORE FOCUS AND PRIVACY. THE CURVATURE OF THE SEATING AND CEILING DROP DOWNS ADD TO THE LANGUAGE OF FLUIDITY AND CONNECTION IN AN EFFORT TO GIVE VISITORS AN EXPERIENCE WITH THEMSELVES, THE INTERIOR AND OTHERS.
