I AM A SENIOR IN THE MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS. I CHOSE TO PURSUE ARCHITECTURE BASED ON MY PASSION FOR DESIGN. I AM HARDWORKING AND DRIVEN IN MY EDUCATION AND FUTURE CAREER ENDEAVORS. THROUGH MY LIFE EXPERIENCES I HAVE GAINED A PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS, AND I HOPE TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THAT THROUGH MY CAREER. PROJECT BRIEF

MAKING A NEIGHBORHOOD FOR THE DALLAS ARTS DISTRACT.

THIS PROJECT FOCUSED ON DESIGNING AN ASSEMBLY HOUSE FOR THE DALLAS ARTS DISTRICT. THE PROGRAM CONSISTED OF A BANQUET HALL, FOOD HALL, PERFORMANCE HALL, BLACKBOX THEATER, GALLERY, AND MARKET SPACES. THROUGH SITE EXPLORATION AND ANALYSIS I NOTICED THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN THE ARTS DISTRICT. THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON DALLAS THROUGH ITS CULTURE. I FOUND GREAT SIGNIFICANE IN THE BARRIOS HISPANICS WHERE PLACED IN WHEN THEY ARRIVED TO DALLAS; WHICH INFLUNCED THE FORM OF MY DESIGN. TRADITIONAL BARRIOS WHERE OFTEN BUILT ON HILLS AROUND A CENTRAL FOCAL POINT SUCH AS A PLAZA. PUBLIC SPACES ARE LOCATED ALONG THE STREET TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY. MY GOAL FOR THIS PROJECT WHERE TO CREATE A SPACE THAT INTEGRATES THE COMMUNITIES CULTURE, DESIGN A BUILDING THAT WORKS WITH THE ENVIRONMENT NOT AGAINST IT, AND TO ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY.

WIND: THE DESIGN ALLOWS FOR THE WIND FLOW OVER IT AND ALLOWS FOR WIND TO REACH THE COURTYARD. BALCONIES ALLOW FOR WIND TO CIRCULATE THE INTERIOR.

SOLAR: WINDOWS WHERE PLACED ALONG THE WEST AND NORTH SIDE OF THE BUILDING TO OPTIMIZE NATURAL LIGHTING. HOWEVER TO ADDRESS THE HEAT, LOUVRES ARE PLACED AS THE FACADE; SERVING AS A SHADING DEVICE.

RAINWATER: SINCE THE ROOFS ARE SLOPED THEY ARE ABLE TO EASILY DIRECT WATER. IN ORDER TO PRESERCE SOME OF THE WATER, A BIOSWALE RECIEVES THE RUNOFF FROM THE ROOF TO REPURPOSE THE WATER FOR THE LANDSCAPE.

GREEN SPACES: REINTEGRATE VEGETATION ONTO THE SITE WITH THE GARDEN THAT IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE COMMUNITY WHILE OFFERING OTHER GREEN SPACES WITH DIFFERENT ACCESSIBILITIES.

PROJECT BRIEF

THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS HAS A RICH HISTORY AND TRADITION THAT CONTINUES TO BE EMBRACED.

THIS PROJECT FOCUSED ON DESIGNING A HERITAGE AND WELCOME CENTER FOR CAMPUS. COMMUNITY MEMBERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO INTERACT AND EXPLORE THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS THROUGH DESIGNATED ROOMS WITHIN THE WELCOME CENTER. THE ROOMS HAVE VIEWS DIRECTED TOWARDS SIGNIFICANT LANDMARKS OF CAMPUS. AFTER ANALYZING CAMPUS AND THE FEELING OF BEING ON CAMPUS, I CONCLUDED THAT BEING ON CAMPUS FEELS LIKE BEING FULLY EMBRACED IN A COMMUNITY. IN ORDER TO CONVEY THE FEELING OF EMBRACE I WANTED TO DEVELOP A DESIGN THAT EMULATED A HUG.

PROJECT BRIEF

THE RYAN GRAY PLAYGRAND FOR ALL CHILDREN AT HILLCREST ELEMNTARY IS KNOWN AS A SYMBOL FOR INCLUSION.

THIS PROJECT CONSISTED ON DESIGNING A SHADE STRUCTURE FOR THE PLAYGROUND. THE PLAYGROUND IS FULL OF COLOR, EXPRESSING THE DIVERSITY AMONGST THE STUDENTS. CAPTURING THE IDEALS OF INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY, WHILE CREATING A REFUGE FOR THE HEAT AND RAIN WAS IMPORTANT. ULTIMATELY, THE STRUCTURE WAS A PLEATED DESIGN THAT SHED WATER, WITH COLORFUL POWDER COATED TILES AND A RAIN GARDEN

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

1. PRESENTING IDEAS: WE STARTED OFF THE PROCESS BY PRESENTING OUR DESIGN IDEAS TO THE STUDENTS OF HILLCREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. INTERACTING WITH THE KIDS AND HEARING THEIR FEEDBACK WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY EXPRESSED THEIR EXCITEMNENT FOR THE ADDITION TO THE PLAYGROUND.

2. FABRICATION: THE FABRICATION WAS AN AMAZING LEARNING FROM LEARNING HOW TO SAWS AND MACHINES, TO OF HOLES; I WAS ABLE TO THIS EXPERIENCE WITH KNOWLEDGE UNDERSTANDING FOR THE PROCESS.

FABRICATION PROCESS LEARNING EXPERIENCE. TO OPERATE DIFFERENT TO DRILLING HUNDREDS COME OUT OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE FABRICATION

3. CONSTRUCTION: LAYING OUT AND PREPARING THE SITE GAVE US AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANCE OF PRECISE MEASURMENTS. I WAS ABLE TO HELP IN BREAKING GROUND TO PREPARE FOR OUR FOOTINGS. WE THEN BEGAN TO ASSEMBLE THE STRUCTURE AND THEN BEGAN PLACING THE ROOF TILES; WHICH WAS DEFINITELY MY FAVORITE PART OF THE PROCESS. I CAME OUT OF THIS EXPERIENCE WITH A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS AND A HIGHER LEVEL OF RESPECT FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS.

PROJECT BRIEF

MASSACHUSETTS ST. IS A HUB FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, DRAWING PEOPLE IN TO ITS UNIQUE SPACES.

THIS PROJECT FOCUSED ON DESIGNING AN INCUBATOR LOCATED ON MASSACHUSETTS ST. IN LAWRENCE, KANSAS. THE PROGRAM CONSISTED OF POP-UP RESTAURANTS, RETAIL SPACES, A FRICTION SPACE, CONFERENCE ROOMS, AND OFFICE SPACES. IN ADDITION TO THE ENCLOSED SPACES TWO COURTYARDS WHERE TO BE INCLUDED. DESIGNING AN ENGAGING SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO INTERACT NOT ONLY WITH THE SPACE BUT WITH EACH OTHER WAS PRIORITIZED. ANALYZING THE SITES SURROUNDINGS INFLUENCED THE ORGANIZATION OF THE SPACES. THE LOWER LEVELS HAVE MORE FOOT TRAFFIC, WHICH LEAD ME TO PLACE THE PUBLIC SPACES ON THE LOWER LEVEL. THE UPPER LEVELS CONTAINED SPACES THAT HAD MORE MOMENTS TO PAUSE. THE PRIVATE SPACES WHERE PLACED IN THE BACK TO SPERATE THE ACCESS TO THEM FROM THE PUBLIC.

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT

1. SONG INTERPRETATION COLLAGE: WE STARTED OFF THE PROCESS BY CREATING A COLLAGE REPRESENTING THE EXPERIENCE OF A SECTION OF AN INSTRUMENTAL SONG. MY CHOSEN SONG WAS MERRY-GO-ROUND OF LIFE BY THE MONONOKE ENSEMBLE.

2. STUDY MODEL: I THEN CONTINUED DESIGN BEADS THAT REPRESENT ASPECTS OF THE COLLAGE. BEADS WHERE CREATED I LAYOUT.

3. SPACIAL ARRANGEMENT DIAGRAM: ONCE I WAS SET ON A LAYOUT I DIAGRAMED THE SPACIAL ARRANGEMENT OF THE STUDY MODEL. I THEN COLOR CODED EACH SPACE TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THEM.
