RESUME

GLIMPSE FALL 2020

Glimpse is an outdoor dining experience at the Cresent Strip Mall for the customers of Sazan Ramen which serves Japanese Paitean Ramen and Steamies which serves Hong Kong style dumplings.

Many of us before COVID took dining for granted but during the time of this pandemic, we have come to miss gathering together in a restaurant and sharing a meal. Glimpse hopes to offer a glimpse of normalcy by allowing people to share a meal at a restaurant while maintaining the six feet social distancing between parties. Glimpse provides glimpses of connection by allowing visitors to take a glimpse at other parties in order to encourage visitors that we are in this together as a community.

Glimpse offers a glimpse into Japanese and Chinese dining cultures with Japanese chabadai floor-seating tables and embedded lazy susan tables which promote family-style dining. There are various sized dining units to be inclusive and cater to different party sizes.

Each dining unit creates glimpses where the lines between two and three dimensions are blurred through the inclusion of anamorphic projections.

These anamorphic projections can only be seen in a glimpse when walking around the dining units. These small moments where the anamorphic projection comes into focus prompts people to further explore and wander and hopefully serve as a reminder to slow down and find those small moments in life to cherish.

DINING UNITS

WEST END WELLNESS & COMMUNITY CENTER FALL 2019

The objective of this project was to renovate and repurpose the West End Elementary School to accommodate three community partners: Meals on Wheels, Headstart, and Lone Star Circle of Care.

The site is located in Taylor, Texas which is known for its small-town feel, despite its steadily growing population, and agricultural roots that are still present today. These aspects informed my approach to be centered around comfort, community, and nature.

The exterior patio space combines all three of these values with the inclusion of seating areas, surrounded by native Texas plants, for the community to gather while enjoying nature. The first floor emphasizes community with a central community dining area that serves as the focal point of the first floor and a flexible dining space that can be used for different community events.

Both the interior and exterior include curving forms that create a welcoming effect.

On the second floor, the main corridor has undulating walls that form pockets of space for patients to sit in while they wait. In order to accommodate different comfort levels, there is also a waiting area on the first floor so people have the option to either wait in a more community setting or a more isolated setting. In order to promote comfort and ease whitecoat syndrome, the second floor is organized with the patient circulation in the center and provider circulation around the core, creating a separate flow of traffic for patients and providers. With the provider circulation on the outside of the core, the healthcare providers are able to fully experience the natural light and views since they are occupying the clinic for the longest hours.

THE VEIL FALL 2020

The Veil is a multi-unit artist residency located in Austin, Texas. The Veil hopes to become a center of exploration where artists and visitors alike can explore and broaden their understanding of art. As a home for artists of different disciplines, the Veil helps artists further their own creativity by collaborating with other artists. By creating moments of unveilings or reveals, the Veil highlights not just the art, but the lives of the artists themselves, allowing visitors to see the process behind the artwork and deepen their understanding and appreciation for art.

The first exploration studied how the movement of a dancer could be represented as either durational, with each frame laid out, or as static, with each frame layered upon each other.

The exploration also conveys movement with the idea of the peel and how it can reveal the dancer’s movements. The motif of movement is also explored by how the peel could be captured with a three-dimensional physical peel or a two-dimensional photograph of a peel.

The second exploration consisted of four panels of peels that conveyed movement through their translated position. Behind some of the peels were openings that depicted parts of an image that could only be fully seen if the viewer tilted the object to piece together the image.

The third exploration played with light and perceived depth by adding a gradient layer behind a transparent peel to study how the peel could enhance the idea of revealing something.

The facade of the Veil was developed from the third exploration. The curtain wall system consists of a layer of peels and a mirrored gradient glass layer behind it which allows for the lives of the artists to be revealed to the public, showcasing not just their work but their craft and lives as well. The curtain wall system also serves as a mirror in which the artists can see themselves as they create their art.

The motif of the peel continues with the interior walls that look as if someone pulled back parts of the wall to reveal a new space to the occupants. The curvilinear walls also foster curiosity by causing the occupants to explore and wander through the entirety of the floor in order for the space to be fully revealed to them.

Within each loft apartment, the inserted object or objects create a build-up for a full reveal of the interior that only occurs by the occupant moving throughout the space. Each loft contains a murphy bed which creates more studio or practicing space for each artist.

On the first, second, and fourth floor, some areas are open to the floor below creating connections between more public areas and revealing parts of the floor below to encourage the occupants to explore different areas of the building. By including different unveilings and reveals of the spaces and lives of the artists, the Veil hopes to foster curiosity in the public about art, specifically the art of the artists residing there.

AUSTIN TRANSPORTATION & CREATIVE CENTER SPRING 2021

The goal of Austin Transportation & Creative Center is to create a place of connection: connection between Austin and other major Texas cities through the rail system and connection to Austin’s unique culture highlighting the voice of local artists and their craft. Driving through Austin it's not very hard to see examples of the beautiful local art whether it is the murals or sculptures scattered around the city. Because our city's art is part of what Keeps Austin Weird, Austin Transportation & Creative Center strives to foster a greater appreciation for art and the handcraft behind the art by making it the focus of the design, as well as provide art education through the workshops that take place.

The main workshop space is adjacent to the main circulation paths in the building and directly across from the main waiting area to provide a visual connection between the visitors and the artists in the workshop spaces to truly make the handcraft of the art the focal point. Both workshop spaces are wrapped by an extruded terracotta curtain system. The curtain was designed with a pattern that provides visual breaks by creating gaps between the extruded terracotta where light shines through the glass blocks that are inserted in some of those gaps. In the interior of the workshop spaces, softness is introduced through the materiality and form of the felt walls, curtain, and perforated ceiling which contrast the rigidity and hardness of the existing steel and masonry structure. On the exterior and interior of the workshop spaces, the color teal wraps the entire area representing a jewelry box with the artists being the focal point.

In the outside area, the composite wood nooks follow the same pattern of the terracotta curtain to provide some visibility while maintaining the privacy of each nook.

Throughout the building, each space, in its materiality and form, introduces softness to complement the existing structure. By introducing elements that bring softness into the existing building, the design honors the beauty and history of the existing structure by setting it apart from the new forms to remind people of a part of Austin’s history while bringing excitement and life into the space by showcasing what makes Austin Austin today: it’s art and the skilled people behind it.
