Confessions of a Show Mom by Liz Steffes I’m going on 20 years of horse show momming. Yes, show momming is a verb... Ask anyone at the show. My daughter, Liz, started riding when she was 10 and the simple hobby has mushroomed into an entire, all-consuming life. It’s amazing what I’ve learned along the way. So much more than I could have ever imagined. Here are a few show-mom confessions.

happiness, tears of sadness. Tears of gratitude, tears of bewilderment & Sometimes tears of drop-dead, just-too-tired-to-do-it-again! . Confession: I LOVE TEARS! – as it shows she really, truly, deeply cares. Although at times, I’m like.. are you kidding me, your crying now?!? NOW?!? And yet, she cares about her horses, her friends, TEARS: There’s gonna be a LOT of them along her fellow competitors and her own performance. the way. At the show. After a big win. Maybe even Emotions can run the gamut. When the tears flow before or after a lesson. Or when you’re talking about at bizarre moments, it gives us moms (and others) a show. Or when something clicks. Sometimes even an opportunity to listen, to learn and to practice just *looking* at the horse brings on tears. Lol! empathy. The cost of each one of those teary When those tears will flow is the 64-million-dollar counselling sessions is a SH$*@T load of money … question! There can be tears of compassion, tears of and it’s all worth it.

WINNING: RARELY happens. You win some and don’t win a lot. And when you do win, it’s after a gazillion lessons and hundreds of classes. A lot of miles, a lot of vet bills, a lot of “let’s try this bit attempts by the trainer, and a lot of blood, sweat and tears! You’re going to win some (you hope!) and lose a lot. Be ready. Be ready for the roller-coaster journey that has high highs and low lows. Most horses and riders don’t start out winning – it’s the dedication, hard work and “I’m in it because I love it that MAY, eventually, bring you the blue ribbon. And then, once in a very-blue-moon, it clicks. The horse and rider are in sync, the show ring doesn’t frighten the horse, the rider is mentally prepared and is in the zone, the judge likes the style of your mount and decides you really are the best! Confession: I LOVE WINNING... I think most people do! I love seeing the absolute joy in Liz’s eyes (and usually, the tears!) and when the blue ribbon is taken to the car with pride, the continued pride and happiness that ensues. AND, along with how AWESOME winning feels, more often than not horse shows will serve you up a big old piece of humble pie. Most of the time Liz and I drive home from the show reminiscing about her rides, the great conversations we had, or how appreciative of the time we got to spend together – not talking about the ribbon.... and it makes it all SO worth it. SUPPORT: It comes from all kinds of places at a horse show. I remember that time when Liz needed a black western hat – who knows why we didn’t have hers (lol!) – we asked around and in within just a few minutes we had 3 to choose from! We have met some of the nicest, most generous, thoughtful people on earth at a horse show. Most of those at the show (trainers, riders, grooms, show office, moms and dads) really do mean well and are excited for those around them. Generally, in life most people mean well. I know it’s true for me, albeit I have bad days! I’ve had my fair share of those bad days and moments! I’m so appreciative when people cut me some slack – even if they don’t know, they just assume the best – not the worst. I’ve learned that cutting people, and our horses (they have bad days, too), some slack, even when it’s hard, can make a difference.

.Confession: I’m NOT perfect! I often don’t say the “rightâ€? thing at the “rightâ€? time. I think maybe a lot of us have this in common đ&#x;¤Śđ&#x;?ťâ€?♀ď¸?LOL. Lending a hand may be hard, particularly when We’ve shared a smile, or kind word of encouragement to someone and never got anything back. But, I gotta say, I have met some of the best people EVER through our horses! Many would give you the shirt off their back and we can pick up where we left of regardless of how long since we last connected. Something we’ve learned is that Supporting others’ success will never dampen yours - in cheering on other people we lose NOTHING! MONEY: Oh, yeah, the money! OMG it costs a fortune and then some. Our family joke is that you should never have a hobby that eats while you sleep Hmm..TOO LATE! This weekend we were at the MAHA Spring Fling – aka Winona Nationals. Liz won the MAHA member jackpot class with Jerry and we took home $175! It was like we WON THE LOTTERY! As we all know, that $175 won’t cover the monthly training fee, the vet bill, the show fees, the training fees, the hotel, the gas, the new tack we must have to see if that new bit will be better, or the new show clothes. It will cover the new socks we had to buy because for some reason she didn’t have any to wear under her hunt boots (WTH?!?) and a couple Starbuck runs for the barn!!! Lol Confession: I would not eat for a week in order to save the money for this hobby. I would go without in many ways. Yes, money is needed, yet the friendships, fun, and quality hours and days with my daughter (and hopefully soon my granddaughter!) are worth EVERY. SINGLE. DOLLAR. (notice I didn’t say penny! Lol). All in all, what I’m trying to convey is that it’s WORTH IT. The tears, the time, the money, the frustration... it’s all incredibly worth it. Twenty years ago when I started this horse show mom gig I never imagined it would turn into what it is today & for that I am forever grateful. Cheers to the next 20 years of horse showing!

Behind the Scenes at Scottsdale with Erica Partington what farm did you work for, how many horses did they have and what was your daily routine?

I worked for Liberty Meadows and we had 21 horses at Scottsdale! Our daily routines started with checking through schedules and mapping out a work/ride plan for every horse to ensure they’re worked properly to be ready to show and then start getting horses ready to ride and show and make sure every horse is groomed to perfection and in top condition at all times. what was something new or interesting that you learned?

Something new for me was working for a big barn with so many horses and how to efficiently and effectively ensure everything is done in a timely matter! Also learning about every horse as an individual and caring for their specific needs took a lot of concentration and hard work but was very well worth it! what horse did you enjoy most and what did he/ she compete in?

My favourite horse in my barn was Debonheir DGL, he competed in Arabian country English pleasure open and won the championship! He was such an amazing horse both in and out of the show ring and very quickly became my favourite horse to groom. Debonheir DGL made his rides look so effortless and flawless, I felt very honoured to be working with such an incredible horse!

Ponoka, Alberta in April SpringFling

The Spring Fling All Breed Horse show is the start of the show season in Alberta. Our first year of operation was in 2016 when we had 86 horses, we have increased in numbers each year; 106, 146 and in 2019 we had 149 horses. With the extra tack stalls required we were sold out! The facility is expanding so we will have more stalls available to us for next year. We see a variety of breeds at our show, Arabians and Half-Arabians, Saddlebreds, and Morgans make up the majority of our classes but we have had Appaloosa’s, Quarter Horses, Gypsy’s, Mini’s and Hackneys. The All Breed Classes offered are in different disciplines and we also have Breed Specific Classes for Arabians, Half-Arabians, Saddlbreds and Morgans. Three All Breed $1000 Jackpot Classes in Hunter (19 horses this year), English (16 horses this year), and Western (12 horses this year). The Winners take home $500 2nd place wins $300 and 3rd place wins $200. First place also receives a trophy. The show is a ‘must go to’ show for many and it takes a group of incredible individuals to put this show on. Our motto that drives the volunteers and the committee to go the extra mile is “Sometimes the things you most remember about a horse show isn’t showing your horse”. For us when we get comments like “we don’t really want to show in April but this is the best show of the year and don’t want to miss it” we know as a committee we have done our job. We had people from Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and Montana attend our show. There truly is no show that any of us have attended that compares to the Spring Fling. It costs a lot of money to show your horse for a ribbon, so we want to make sure that people, not just the winners, come away with something from the show. Good times, lots of stories, and some prizes.

The Spring Fling Horse Show goes above and beyond to give back to their exhibitors and spectators. It is important in our industry to grow, learn and appreciate what is working. Many shows are seeing a reduction in numbers, yet this show is seeing the opposite. Here is a closer look at some of the ways The Spring Fling Show Committee believes are the reasons they continue to see growth each year. We are always giving items that we want to share with the exhibitors and their horses so our barn makes them into Swag Bags and we deliver them on Thursday night so exhibitors have grown to look forward to the bags for Friday morning when they come in to start the first day of showing.

Sponsored by Spring Fling on Saturday Evening. It’s our way of contributing to the show experience. We deep fry everything from Turkey’s to Oreo’s. deep fry palooza:

silent auction:

We have been told that our silent auction is one of the best auctions going. Everything from hay to the kitchen sink and faucet is available in our auction. (we actually had a kitchen sink and touchless faucet in 2018)

swag bags:

Throughout the weekend we provide meals sponsored by the following; Fountain Tire, Souptacular, AgPro Insurance and Clover Leaf Stables. sponsored meals:

horse sundae’s:

prize room:

We are so fortunate to have such a great community around us and the show that we have so many items that we can’t possibly put them all in our silent auction so we give them away as prizes. If you ask anyone that came to the show this year about the mad rush for the prize room when it opened up they will tell you it was like the Macy’s Day Sale. We know it’s hard for business or individuals to give money so we are always happy to accept gifts of any kind. It helps to promote the business by giving and adds value to our show. I always say if someone gave us a pack of gum we will find an appropriate home for it.

This is a sponsored event by Sterling Equestrian and Masterfeeds. We started this event 4 years ago and have taken it on the road shopping expo: We have vendors located un the to Region 17 when it’s in Alberta and to Canadian barn selling goods for both horse and rider. Nationals the last 2 years. It will be back again for 2019 in Brandon, MB. In an industry that needs growth we can all work together in acheiving excitement and positivity at hot chocolate social: We host this on arrival our shows. day and have it sponsored.
