Tapeo Restaurant and Bar is designed to showcase Spanish Mediterranean cuisine in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The restaurant is group friendly, providing a gathering place to enjoy a meal, drinks, and experience Spanish Mediterranean cuisine. The design has a warm, modern, and sophisticated atmosphere where the wine and food are the focus.
Concept studies were developed from bubble and block plans to initial furniture plans. Relationships between spaces for guests and staff were planned to provide a positive experience for all users. Ceiling heights were also explored with lower heights in the dining zones and higher in the lounge and bar. These designated zones provide a variety of dining experiences for the guests.
Through sketching significant views, the opening to the kitchen in the bar and a large double sided fireplace became central focal points. Arches are a repeated element and are balanced with clean lines to add softness and sophistication.
Guests are greeted in the entry with a double sided fireplace providing a warm and cozy feel. A lounge and bar to the left provide guests with a casual dining experience perfect for large and small groups. The warm woods, stucco, Spanish-patterned tile, and gold accents reinforce a modern Spanish style.
The bar is a central gathering space with views into the prep kitchen. Tapas, or small plates, are prepared for Spanish Mediterranean cuisine, so the open kitchen offers guest visual entertainment and a memorable dining experience of the cuisine being prepared.
To showcase the wine, the bar features a wine display with accent lighting to highlight the wine, prep kitchen, and face of the bar.

Arched booths are designed to provide some visual and acoustical privacy in the open dining spaces.
A view into the kitchen allow guests to see the cuisine being prepared from the dining area, while providing the best flow for servers.
