GEORGE FISHER Scouted due to her clear potential at an early age, George Fisher has been a Gilbert Netball ambassador since she was 16. An individual who isn’t short of style and ideas, she also knows what she wants from her equipment and clothing. We recently caught up with the Coventry Wasps Goal Scorer to get her thoughts on kit, being a Gilbert Netball ambassador and what she sees for her career and netballing future. Hi, I’m George Fisher and I play for Wasps Netball. What does Gilbert Netball mean to you? It means that I get to wear absolutely lovely kit, with loads of variety; so, leggings, tops, jumpers, trainers. It also means that I get to train comfortably, I get to look good, feel good, play good. What is your favourite piece of Gilbert Netball kit and why? I think my favourite is the grey warm up top, it literally goes with everything. So, any kit that I wear whether it’s my Wasps kit, or just training kit, it goes with it all. I’m wearing it right now, so I wear it in the gym, wear it to lectures; it’s probably my favourite top. What is it like being a Gilbert Netball ambassador? I love it. I think the people that work for Gilbert as well are really lovely people. You go to their headquarters and it’s great fun. You get to try on loads of kit that you have got an input into and also you’ll be able to be like “ooh, try this colour with the trainers“, or “try putting this in the kit”, so you have quite a big say in what they’re going to bring in, which is a huge part of being an ambassador. You’re the one that’s playing netball, you’re the one meeting the kids, meeting people, you’re going to have a bit more of an idea of what people are going to want and what you want in the next season so it’s nice to have a say and input. What is your favourite netball moment? Obviously the Commonwealth Games was incredible. I think the final was really exciting, but so was the semi against Jamaica. If my memory serves me correctly, Jamaica were ahead the whole way and right at the last minute, England pipped them to the post and I think that’s an achievement in itself. We beat teams that were all ranked higher than us. Who is your favourite netball player? It has to be Geva Mentor. Top notch! What is your average training day like? I’ll probably get up in the morning, have a bit of breakfast, maybe hit the gym, do a conditioning session, and then train with the squad in the evening. We’ll do like 45 minutes, half an hour of video analysis and then a two hour session. It’ll be really focusing on what we’re going to be doing to face the opposition that we have at the weekend. What is the best advice that you have been given or would you give? Advice for a young player would just be enjoy it. There is no point in doing something that you don’t enjoy. So as long as you’re enjoying it and you’re loving what you’re doing, then continue doing that, because you’ll be the best that you can be. If you start to not enjoy it then it’s not good for anyone. My coach always used to say park it and move on. If you have a rough game, or something happens or you miss a shot, just leave it there and carry on because if you dwell on it, it just gets worse, it’s just like a continuous downward spiral.

BETH COBDEN After a successful trip to the 2018 Commonwealth Games where the England Netball Team took on the formidable and notorious might of the Aussies in the Final, we caught up with the England and Loughborough Wing Defender, Beth Cobden to discuss her achievement, being part of that gold medal winning team and what Gilbert Netball means to her. Hi, I’m Beth Cobden, I’m a netball player for Loughborough Lightning and England Roses. How did you find the Commonwealth Games? The whole thing was just surreal. I think it’s amazing to do it for the ex-players, and the girls that have been training for so long. The likes of Geva, it’s her fifth Commonwealth Games, to actually do it for them. I’m just so lucky to be part of such an amazing team. What did the Commonwealth Games mean to you? Had a week in Brisbane for the actual Commonwealth Games, when we were with all of Team England. So that was really good to just get settled in. It was my first Commonwealth Games, so it was amazing to be part of it. Being around all of the other sports and learning about what they do for their training, watching them compete and just getting to know them really. It was nice to get away from a solely netball environment and speak to other people and see what they’re up to. What does being a Gilbert Netball ambassador mean to you? Oh, it’s been awesome to be sponsored by Gilbert Netball. They have really supported me; helping me design a ball has been really cool and then getting lots of training kit has been really good as well. What goes in your Gilbert kit bag? I throw my shoes in, I’ve got ankle braces that I’ll wear. I make sure I’ve got lots of drinks and stuff, I always have my training top and then if it’s cold, I put another hoodie over the top of it. I make sure I’ve got a jumper, some tracksuit bottoms. If I’m going out on a run, I normally wear something like this, because it keeps you warm but you don’t tend to get too hot. What is your favourite netball moment? The whole Commonwealth Games. Absolutely loved it and then to finish the way it did was just incredible. What would you say to anyone from the next generation that plays netball? To just enjoy it and to have fun. You make friends and it’s just something that you’ve just got to enjoy and love.

Her ‘can do’ attitude and desire to push things forward has always seen Tamsin at the forefront of Netball. We took some time out during a photo shoot to catch up with this sporting icon to discuss her life as a Gilbert Netball ambassador, the sport she loves and what she feels the future holds for both her and the sport. Hi, I’m Tamsin Greenway, I am the director of netball at Wasps and a Gilbert Netball ambassador. How do you see Gilbert Netball as a brand? For me, Gilbert Netball is still the number one netball brand. I was so excited to start working with you guys, it was probably about five years ago. I think the brand has definitely grown in terms of the products. What I really love is that it’s an open conversation, we’ve always chatted about the ball designs and how we [the players] want to see it. We’ve taken risks...It’s really nice to have brands that are specifically designed for the sport. What are your thoughts on the Gilbert kit? The fit for me is really important. I know growing up, I was always in boys sports clothing, because that was all that you could get. I remember when we first started talking about the different hoodies and designs we wanted, we wanted something really specific for girls and netball players. Long in the body, long in the arms. Just all of the added extras as well, with the hoodies and the leggings, having the writing up on them as well. I love that stuff, you can’t get that anywhere else. You can’t get anything that says “I’m a netball player”. That’s part of it that makes Gilbert Netball so special. For us, the garments have been absolutely amazing. A for the designs that we can have on it, but B the cut. I know we talked about having a racer back which was brought in, and that for me is the exciting part. That there’s that open dialogue all of the time, we’re always looking at what looks good, because the reality is that we want to be comfortable, but we also want to look good when we step out to court.

K ALIFA Mc COLLIN Making her international debut at the age of 17, Kalifa McCollin is a player who isn’t short of experience. Having played for Celtic Dragons, Mavericks and her home nation of Trinidad and Tobago, every year of her playing career has gone from strength to strength. Taking some time out from her busy schedule to talk to the Gilbert Netball team, Kalifa told us more about her experiences, being a Gilbert Netball ambassador and the advice her father gave her which has helped to become the player she is today. My name is Kalifa McCollin and I play for the Benecos Mavericks and Team Trinidad and Tobago, I am also a Gilbert Netball ambassador. What is your favourite netball moment? Playing in the World Cup in 2015 I believe, my debut was in Australia. Our first match was against Australia in Australia, so I think that was an amazing experience for a seventeen year old really. What are your thoughts on the 2019 World Cup? I think it will be quite a shift from Australia to England. But I’m definitely looking forward to it, because netball has become very competitive, so it’s unpredictable. So this World Cup is going to be very, very exciting and I am looking forward to that. What does an average training day look like for you? A Strength and Conditioning session from, six to seven. After that, I will probably do an on court session with my coach. Then I’ll probably rest. The next day, we have a full team session that goes day to day really. What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given? I’d probably say from my dad. He usually says “be the first one on the court and be the last one to leave”. Let’s say training starts at seven thirty, I will get there for seven. I’ll take some shots before the session has started, so I will be prepared. When the session has ended, I’m still there taking shots again. So I think that’s the most important, well the best advice that I have been given, throughout my netball career. I think, if you want to be the best, then you have to train harder than everybody else. What does Gilbert mean to you? To me, Gilbert Netball is the worldwide premium netball brand and it’s an honour to represent that brand. Which Gilbert Netball kit do you like the most? I would have to say the dresses, they are world class. I have been wearing those dresses since I was fourteen years old, representing my country. They fit my physique quite well and yeah, those are definitely my favourite products. My favourite dress would probably be the flared bottom dresses. They make me look super awesome when I jump. Which three words summarise Gilbert for you? Passion, unity and creativity.

SHAMERA STERLING Another of Gilbert Netball’s new signings for 2019, Shamera Sterling is a young netball player who has been tipped to go on to big things. Winning bronze with Jamaica during the Commonwealth games and also signing for Loughborough Lightning her playing career has got off to a very healthy start. We invited Shamera to a photo shoot on her return from Australia and spoke to her about her first Games, being a Gilbert Netball ambassador and what she thinks the future holds. Hi, I’m Shamera Sterling a Loughborough Lightning player. Are you enjoying Loughborough? I’m enjoying Loughborough Lightning. It’s my first international netball contract, so I am excited for this, knowing that I’m playing for Loughborough. I was warmly welcomed by the team so I am excited. What are you studying and what are you planning for the future? I’m in my third year at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica and currently studying primary education. I have a love for children, so I would like to teach them some of the stuff that I learnt when I was a child. How did you find the Commonwealth Games, as a Gilbert Netball Ambassador? Well, it was my first Commonwealth Games, my first time being an ambassador and my first time wearing Gilbert. I was excited! The village was awesome. It was a lot of fun there. We got the bronze, not what we wanted, but we are grateful that God put us on the podium. Which Gilbert Netball kit do you like the most? I love the hoodies, the tights and the netballs. The only netballs I have ever seen are the Gilbert ones so I quite like them. Which one word summarises Gilbert Netball for you? Powerful.
