Year in Review 2018-2019

A word from the Dean Dear friends of COBE: As we kick off the 2019-2020 academic year, I am happy to reflect on the progress we have made as a college. The College of Business and Economics has continuously made great strides in advancing towards our strategic goals.

Our fantastic COBE faculty have worked extensively to provide our students with the best possible academic experience at AU. Most notably, professor Pat Berry has launched the Rabbit Robotics program, and together with Morgan Center director, Tom Sudow, has reinvigorated the Eagle Consulting program, launched thanks to the generosity of our friend Eric Wiedenmann. The 1 Year MBA Program continues to flourish at our Columbus and Cleveland locations. The program will be travelling to Greece, Israel, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, and Denmark this academic year. The Initial AACSB Accreditation process is on track for an Accreditation team visit in Spring of 2021. Dr. Ray Jacobs is working on the next report COBE is required to submit by December 2019. COBE's accreditation team (Dean, Associate Dean, MBA Executive Director, and AACSB project manager) is attending AACSB's accreditation conference in San Antonio in September. The Eagle Investment Group has again traveled to NYC and visited top notch financial firms. The program continues to foster young business professionals with a strong understanding of the finance field through experience managing stocks and other assets. Phase 1 of the fundraising campaign for EIG has been tremendously successful; with a lead gift of 1 Million dollars from AU alum Rich Ferrari, and additional significant gifts, we have raised $1.5 million to support Bloomberg terminals in our trading room, and to launch Eagle Ventures. EV is a student-run venture fund that will invest in startups. Very few B schools offer such an amazing opportunity for undergraduates. The Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies continues to inspire the young entrepreneur in every student whether through the numerous speakers they bring in, and the competitions they sponsor. Our student was a member of the team that won first place in the ECC competition, beating some of the finest universities in the region. Director Tom Sudow continues to work across campus with students who have ideas that could be developed and launched. Have a great academic year and Go Eagles!

AACSB Accreditation Updates In 2017, the Dauch College of Business and Economics began to pursue accreditation by AACSB. An Eligibility Application was submitted in May 2017, and approved in August 2017. In December 2018, Dauch COBE submitted an initial Self-Evaluation Report (iSER). Accompanying the iSER submission was a letter signed by Ashland University President Carlos Campo (pictured right), reaffirming the university’s full support in pursuing AACSB accreditation. The iSER was accepted by the AACSB Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC) in March 2019. With this acceptance, Ashland University and Dauch COBE are officially engaged in the accreditation process. The next steps in the process are to submit a formal Progress Report to the IAC in December 2019, and to begin preparing a full Self-Evaluation Report in 2020. There is a visit to be scheduled during the spring of 2021

Eagle Investment Group The 2018-2019 school year saw the 20th anniversary of the Eagle Investment Group and with it the launch of their Venture Capital Fund campaign. The Eagle Investment Group has helped students find their calling in Finance since its creation 20 years ago. The group launched their campaign in hopes of providing current and future students gain access to resources to better help their future in the business world. The gifts will go towards improved technology and resources for the financial classrooms. The campaign was an opportunity for anyone who wanted to invest in Ashland University students who have the desire to walk down Wall Street some day. The Eagle Investment Group is proud to say that over $1.5 million was raised during the campaign. In the Spring 2019 semester, The Eagle Investment Group held an event with Alumni to kick of their Venture Capital Campaign. The event had a wonderful turnout and was a real testament to how much the Eagle Investment Group has impacted its students 20 years after its creation.

Bloomberg Terminal February 2019 saw the introduction of the first Bloomberg terminal to our state of the art Trading Room here in the College of Business and Economics. The Bloomberg terminal is a modern icon of the financial market; creating a connection to real time financial market data and the ability to place trades. COBE finance students will receive a competitive advantage in their future career goals with addition COBE plans to add more Bloomberg terminals to the Trading Room in the fall of 2019. This will in turn provide the connectivity to more finance students and add another advantage to their future career.

Professor Kaskey helping with tax returns

The Accounting department once again held the annual VITA Tax Program from February 2019 until April 2019. The VITA Program is designed to assist in tax preparation for those eligible and allows for free e-filing for Federal and State returns. This year the program completed 126 tax returns for the 2018 tax year which is a 103% increase from last year’s program. Student Volunteers must pass the IRS exam requirement to be able to prepare returns and 100% of the students/volunteers passed. The seventeen student volunteers that were present were apart of the Federal Taxation for Individual Taxation class (ACCT 308). As a bonus, there were zero tax returns rejected during the program.

Rabbit Robotics For the past few years two Supply Chain Management courses (SCM 316 and 351) have been supplied with robotic kits from Rabbit USA, located in Middletown, Ohio. The robotic kits are used for part of the students final exam and project in the two courses. The classes require the students to learn various engineering techniques in order to build and operate the robotic kits. On Wednesday, February 6th a teleconference call was held between the Ashland University Consulting students and Rabbit USA to discuss their proposed business plan. The proposed plan was to create a satellite branch of Rabbit Robotics at AU run by students. The consulting team, led by Ewelina Siwik and Elizabeth Paydo, presented to the CEO and CFO of Rabbit USA. During the conference call, a verbal agreement was reached while a formal agreement is to be finalized at a later date. A 2000 square foot space was required on campus to run the operation with the old Buffalo Wild Wings building as a high possibility. Approved by both the Dean and Associate Dean of Dauch and fully embraced by the CFO and VP of Human Resources at Ashland University, the plan can proceed. Students working with the operation were trained at both the Middletown location and on campus. Rabbit Robotics is also providing some pieces of equipment and tools for the project. Since the verbal agreement was reached, the old Buffalo Wild Wings building (now referred to as the BOT Lab) has been converted a fully functional bot production lab. Production is ready to begin this fall when the students return from summer break.

In My Own Words: Mitchell Ott I did not expect to be a business major.

Mitchell Ott

I never thought I would be where I am right now.

I came to Ashland University in the fall semester of 2015 as an Athletic Training major, believing I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. (This of course, came after spending my entire senior year of high school believing I was going to be a Sports Medicine Physician, but I digress) In fact, I balked at the idea of being a business major, called it “boring”, and joked at my friends for being business majors. I picked up a job at Information Technology here on campus, thinking I would just work a few hours during the week to have some extra spending money, and graduate in four years to pursue a career as an Athletic Trainer. However, three semesters into my Athletic Training degree, I realized it was not the field for me. I am very much someone who has to plan everything out for the future, so I do not like when things do not go as planned. I was a mess. Counselors at Career Services, my family, friends, academic advisors, and my professors helped me to realize that people were my true passion. While I did not know exactly what I wanted to do with my life (and still don’t), I changed my major to Business Management, to go along with my existing Sport Management minor, and hoped to get a broad range of skills and knowledge, work hard, and find my way from there. I haven’t looked back. After my first semester as a business major, I accepted a human resources internship with School Specialty, Inc. in Mansfield, Ohio. School Specialty, Inc. (SSI) is a school supply distribution company that receives 70% of their orders for the year between June and August. I was tasked with screening applicants for seasonal warehouse positions, as well as conducting 1-on-1 interviews with them, and making hiring decisions. That was followed by leading them through new-hire orientation and getting them set up for their first day of work. I loved the work that I did, and loved the people I worked with even more. The following fall, another opportunity came up to work for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in a semester-long unpaid internship. As a huge football fan, I happily accepted, knowing this chance may not come by again. I worked in the Youth and Education department, helping to plan and coordinate youth field trips to the Hall, as well as helping to prepare for and run Heart of a Hall of Famer programs, where a Hall of Famer would interact with high school students in a Q&A session. It was an outstanding experience that I learned a lot from.

In my search for a final summer internship, an Amazon recruiter messaged me on LinkedIn, urging me to apply for a summer HR internship with Amazon. After interviewing, I was offered a position and placed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I lived by myself in a studio hotel room six hours from home for ten weeks over the summer of 2018. It was the best growing experience of my life. Again, I enjoyed the work I did, and loved going to work every day to see my coworkers. Amazon’s “work hard, play hard” mentality was perfect for me, and as tough as it was, I consider it one of the defining periods in my lifetime. Two months after the completion of my internship, Amazon extended a full-time offer to me, which I have happily accepted. I will be working in Lexington, Kentucky as a Senior Human Resources Assistant after graduation, and could not be any more excited for what my future holds. In my time at Ashland I have been actively involved in several intramural sports, as well as becoming more involved at Information Technology, where I have worked my way up to Shift Leader, taking on more responsibility and over twice the hours I planned upon freshman year. I became active in the AU Human Resources Student Chapter organization, taking on the role of Social Media director. I participated in the Ohio HR Games, hosted by Ashland University, and along with my team took home first place. The games were sponsored by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), who awarded me a scholarship upon the conclusion of the games. Accepting a scholarship from the professional affiliate of an industry I will be entering could not be any more meaningful. Four years ago if you would have told me I would be graduating from Ashland University with a bachelors in Business Management, be preparing for a full-time job with Amazon, and be writing the Student Spotlight in the College of Business Year in Review, there is no way I would have believed you. I have come to believe that things truly have a way of working themselves out. The Dauch College of Business and Economics has been a blessing. The knowledge I have gained, and the experiences I have lived are second to none, and I can honestly say I am in love with this college. While I still do not know exactly where I will end up, I have a direction to pursue, and have been provided with the knowledge and experiences to make my goals a reality. Go Eagles!!

Faculty Highlight: Joan Berry Kalamas What kind of experiences did you bring to Ashland University when you came here to teach? I graduated from here when it was Ashland College with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health, with minors in Biology and Religion, and a certification in Driver’s Education. I played volleyball, basketball, field hockey, and lacrosse and was a fencer for 4 years at AC and was named our class Valedictorian. After graduation I taught High School Biology, Health, Physical Education, and Driver’s Education and coached the girls swim team for 3 years at Lexington High School. Then I went to be a Management Development Trainer and Training Manager at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. While there I was asked to complete several special projects and that was my introduction to Human Resources which I absolutely loved! I went to The Ohio State University to get my Master’s degree in HR but HR wasn’t really a field yet so my degree is in Adult Education and Professional Development. I accepted a full time job as a Zone Manager of HR position for Kinder-Care Learning Centers and was responsible for HR for 10 states, 224 locations, and 3,500 employees. What a great job – I was hooked on HR!!! After being with Kinder-Care for 8 years, I took an HR Director position with Sherers Communications, a leading-edge telecommunications company. Sherers was acquired by MATRIXX Marketing Inc. (a subsidiary of Cincinnati Bell) about 4 ½ years later and then 2 ½ years after that our facility was closed so I took a Vice President of Human Resources position with Aegis, a long term care management company with skilled nursing, assisted living, and independent living facilities all across the US where I was responsible for all Human Resources. Ashland University asked me to be the Director for the Graduate Management Institute which I did for two years and I started teaching HR as an Adjunct Professor where I created our HR courses in the MBA and undergraduate programs. Then I started my own company, Strategic Solutions, which I still operate today where I provide continuing education classes across the state of Ohio for Nursing Home Administrators and provide HR consulting services in executive recruitment, training, compensation, union relations, executive coaching, etc. Several of my clients include Verizon Wireless, City BBQ, Community Bankers Association of Ohio, Lippert, and The Columbus Chamber of Commerce. My husband, who had his Ph.D. in Organizational Development and taught as an Adjunct Professor for the MBA program at Ashland University while working at Bank One, asked me to write a book with him and we had two books that were published by HRD Press: Developing Employee Capital: Setting the Stage for Life Long Learning and Situational Performance Improvement. I then accepted a position as the Vice President of Human Resources and Risk Management position for Lutheran Social Services where I was responsible for all HR and risk management for 34 locations. The services that LSS provided were wonderful – skilled nursing care, assisted and independent living, homeless shelters, food pantries, disaster response, senior housing, adoptions, etc. Unfortunately after 3 years with LSS my husband passed away suddenly and when AU asked me to teach full time, I thought it was the perfect change after 25+ years in HR. I have been teaching 10 years now at AU and still love it! I bring with me those 25 + years of experience and have two national HR certifications. I really enjoy getting to know the students and sharing what I believe is very helpful, practical information and skills. I was so excited and honored last year by being awarded the Taylor Teaching Excellence Award here at AU. Giving the keynote speech at the Honors Convocation was one of the highlights of my career.

Tell us a little bit about some of the projects you have been working on. I did just plan and run the 2019 Ohio HR Games for the Ohio SHRM State Council in February of this year where HR student chapter members from universities all over Ohio are invited to participate in an HR jeopardy-style competition. I could not be more proud that an AU team won first place!!! In addition, I am just about ready to start creating a new online MBA course on Compensation and Benefits.

What do you do outside of AU? I have been the President of the Berry family since 1997 so I am currently planning our 111 th Annual Berry Reunion. I am the Moderator of my church, Little Washington Congregational Church in Mansfield, where I recently served as the Pastor Search Committee Chair, the Moderator, and I am the liaison between the Trustees, Deacons, Christian Education and the Pastor. I also sing in the choir and serve as the choir piano accompanist. I have been the President of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association, since 2011, where most of my Dad’s family is buried (5 generations). My Dad served on the Board from 1953 – 2009 and asked me to take his place in 2009 so I did. I worked at Malabar Farm State Park as a tour guide in the Big House and have given house tours every year since 1976 at Heritage Day—43 years and still enjoying it. In addition, I wanted to help shape the field of HR as it was emerging so in 1992 I starting volunteering and am still volunteering 27 years later. I served for 11 years on the HRACO Board, including serving as the President of the Association and then I have served for 18 years on Ohio SHRM State Council, including serving as the State Council Director for Ohio in 2008-2009. At the Ohio HR Conference last year I was recognized out of 1,500 attendees for having the most years of volunteer service in Ohio – 27 years!!! I have taught (and still teach) preparation courses for 22 years to help HR professionals pass national certification examinations. My passion really is HR!! I also love to garden and grow flowers so I plant and weed all the flowers at my church, my Mom’s house, and my house in Westerville. Since I adore animals I also love spending time with my cats.

What do you enjoy most about being at AU and Ashland? The students really are fine, young individuals and I so enjoy getting to know them and help shape their future. It is also fun to watch their sporting and music events – I am a huge women’s basketball fan and even flew to watch our women’s team play for the national championship in Texas and I drove to watch them play the national championship game in South Dakota last year.

Joan Kalamas after receiving the Taylor Teaching Excellence Award

Alumnus Returns Fall 2018 Ashland University alumnus Rich Ferrari returned to campus in the Fall 2018 semester to speak on “Moments of Truth” from his Excellence by Choice Lecture Series. Mr. Ferrari’s “Moments of Truth” presentation was the first of many from his lecture series. Mr. Ferrari came to Ashland University in the mid-1970s to play lacrosse and it was during his junior year that he started to develop his philosophy that would define his life. Since graduating from Ashland University, Ferrari has had a very successful career in the venture capital industry in Silicon Valley. Mr. Ferrari is a co-founder of De Novo Ventures, a 650 million dollar company, which is dedicated to Medical Devices and Biotechnology.

Spring 2019 Mr. Ferrari returned once again in March of 2019 to speak on “The Value of Objectivity” which is another part of his Excellence by Choice Lecture Series. This is just one part of his lecture series that Mr. Ferrari has been developing for years. Rich Ferrari has been a part of many important projects since graduating from AU. For example he is a co-founder of CTS and the group that brought the company to its initial public offering in as little as 7 months. Rich Ferrari serves as a faculty member of the Stanford Biodesign Emerging Entrepreneurs Forum and also serves as a board member for the Stanford Coulter Foundation for Translational Medicine.

Burton D. Morgan Center News Due to the intensive efforts by center Director Tom Sudow, Ashland University was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Burton D. Morgan Foundation to support the entrepreneurial programming of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies in 2018. The Burton D. Morgan Foundation trustees met last September and approved around $1.5 million dollars in grants to school across Ohio in support of entrepreneurial studies. The grant for AU will go in support of the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies as well as the development of a core entrepreneurship course. Funding from the foundation will also allow the Morgan Center to expand their speaker series .

The grant will help students participate in more entrepreneurial studies and contests in the future as well as set up a Start-up Academy that will teach students all over campus how to launch their own business.

Recently, the Burton D. Morgan Foundation grant helped a group of Ashland COBE students participate in this year’s Entrepreneurship Immersion Week coached by Dr. Dan Sullivan. Entrepreneurship Immersion Week is an intensive, one-week, immersion experience for undergraduates from all disciplines to learn the skills to develop new business concepts and then apply these skills in a team-based business concept competition. Congratulations to Gary Byas III who represented COBE on the winning team.

MBA New York Finance Tour Ashland MBA finance students once again returned to New York this July. They had the opportunity to experience many historical landmarks and visit the center of the financial world. The students were able to tour several innovative companies and experience private tours arranged by Professor Terry Rumker. Students were accompanied by Dean Elad Granot, Associate Dean Ray Jacobs, MBA Executive Director Ronald Mickler Jr., MBA Recruiter/Advisor Jennifer Homan and Ashland Alum Eric Wiedenmann.

2019 Day of Giving The 2019 Day of Giving on March 21 was one for the books. The number of donors increased from last year with a whopping 750 donors. The Day of Giving team’s efforts helped to raise a record breaking $59,000, beating last year’s total! The student planning team consisted of Tiffany Harris, Laurena Shick, Ricardo Loera and Rachel Stallard. Take a second to see how their Day of Giving experience has impacted them. Pictured L to R: Laurena, Tiffany, Ricardo and Rachel. TIFFANY "My favorite part about creating this year's Day of Giving was being able to really apply what we've all learned in the classroom to a real project that benefits AU students. Using all the concepts that we have been taught, tweaking them, making them unique and directly applying them to this year's strategy made it fun to see the project come together. Thank you for providing me this experience. No matter how much research we put in, hours spent on the planning process, or any other marketing work we had done, success could not have been possible without donors like you. Thank you!" Ricardo "The most eye opening part of the project for me was how much work goes into making the Day of Giving possible. We started late September and finished in late March. People may think a 24 hour event would only take a month or two to work on, but that is definitely not the case. The research we put in, the surveys, the planning, and the implementation took months to complete, but it was well worth it! I know without your support I might not have been able to afford college. Thanks to individuals like you, I found a home away from home and a group of friends I know will be in my life forever. My story is just one of the many you impacted with your gift. As long as we follow the motto of giving a little and helping a lot we can continue to change lives. Thank you all so much for giving!"

Laurena

Rachel

"My biggest takeaway from working on the Day of Giving is that this must be what the real world is like! We were able to study our target market, build a campaign, draft a marketing plan, create the advertising content, and, finally, watch the results unfold! It feels amazing to be part of such an important project.

"My favorite aspect of being part of the Day of Giving team was seeing the different strengths each member of the team brought to the project. Each member was able to shine through their specialty, which helped market the day successfully.

Thank you to all of you who supported via a gift or by being an advocate. Each of you played an important part in the 2019 Day of Giving success!"

Because each of you gave a little you helped a lot and your generous support made our day a true success, so thank you!"
