Town gearing up for election with 3 seeking 2 council seats By Melody Kinser Managing Editor

SHLAND – Three candidates – Terry L. “Les” Cook Jr., John Hodges and Daniel W. McGraw -- are vying for two seats on Ashland Town Council in a General Election to be held from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, at Ashland Town Hall at 101 Thompson St. in Ashland. Hodges is the only incumbent seeking to retain the office. He was appointed to council when former COOK Vice Mayor James Mayor moved to North Carolina to pursue a law degree. Mayor James Foley said he was going to focus on his career and opted not to seek reelection. Terms for Foley and Hodges end on Saturday, June 30. Cook has made is home in Ashland for

18 years. He is an educator, having served for 21 years as a teacher, assistant principal and program coordinator. The town’s “sense of community and the activeness of its citizens” drew Cook to become a council candidate. He said residents “are always willing to help when needed.” Cook said his interest in municipal government increased during the controversial [Washington] D.C. to Richmond Southeast High Speed Rail project. If elected, he plans to: HODGES Continue to monitor the decisions being made in regards to train track upgrades in order to protect Ashland from potentially destructive decisions. Promote a business friendly climate in order to attract new businesses and keep already successful businesses in town.

Bringing in new businesses that can provide jobs for our citizens. Be economically responsible with the town’s money in regards to tax burden and town projects. Continue the strong sense of community in the town (upgrading the town pool and responsibly monitoring the finalization of the Ashland Theater renovations). Strategic and careful land development in Ashland. Finding ways to involve everyone in Ashland in community events. Hodges was McGRAW appointed to council on Aug. 1, 2017.
