Teacher/community leader announces town council bid Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com
ASHLAND -- Daniel W. McGraw, a Patrick Henry High School Latin teacher and community leader, has announced his candidacy for Ashland Town Council. McGraw said he loves Ashland’s traditional family-oriented way of life, and looks to development of the town’s computer technology capacity to ensure a prosperous future. He received his B.A. from Randolph Macon College, holds a Master’s Degree from VCU and is in the final stages of earning a doctorate at Liberty University in Educational Leadership. McGraw moved to Ashland in 1992, met and married his wife, Tennylle Sheffield, and raised four daughters in Ashland. “I cannot think of a better place to raise a family or a better place to retire. We must also make it the best place to open a business,” McGraw said. McGraw, who said he has extensive knowledge of distance learning and computer technology, said he believes one of the things Ashland must do, and do quickly, is improve the town’s internet access and data options. “In order for the Town of Ashland to remain the Ashland that the retirees remember and the millennials can embrace, we need access to high-speed fiber lines,” said McGraw. “The

This will bring in the kinds of businesses we McGRAW want … the kinds of businesses that are as attractive to our eyes as our pocketbooks. If Ashland can work on information and data infrastructure, we can entice the likes of Microsoft and Google to set up data collection hubs here or a medical center … high-paying jobs with minimal strain on the quality of life that we cherish in Ashland.” But McGraw said it’s not all about technology. He said it’s time to heal the wounds caused by the railroad controversy. “Our current council members served Ashland well during a very troubling time. Now that the business is behind us, we need to work with our own planning commission and parks and recreation committee to find ways to invite surrounding communities to appreciate what the Town of Ashland has to offer. And it’s time to
