Supervisors still battling funding for road issues By Jim Ridolphi for The Hanover Local HANOVER – The Hanover County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $440.5 million Fiscal Year 2018 budget last week. The new budget addresses pressing Fire/EMS issues, bolsters the Sheriff ’s Office, and provides initial funads required to revamp the school system’s technology and information systems. Vice Chair Sean Davis, Henry District, said this year’s budget is “the best one I’ve seen in the five years I’ve been here.” But, Davis and other members of the board are expressing reservations regarding the approved budget’s inability to address vital road issues in the county.
State funding cuts for road building prompted the county’s Community Development Board to suggest options to supply a steady local stream of funding for road maintenance and construction. Director of Public Works Michael Flagg updated the supervisors regarding the status of important road projects in the county, and estimated the projects are coming up about $53 million short on the funding side. He outlined the Smart Scale system currently employed by the Commonwealth to gauge importance for requested road projects, a process that rated the U.S. 360 widening project 38 of 72 ranked projects.
