Living the Promises of God
Faith Service Worship Vision
There may be times when you find it difficult to reconcile God’s truth to your own opinion or worldview, God’s truth is eternal, it does not change, our understanding of the truth does change as we allow God to work in our hearts and minds. These sessions are not about opinion, they are about learning truth, the truth contained in the Bible, together we are going to focus on how we apply God’s truth, black & white in a grey world. To set godly priorities, grow in Christian character and live according to God’s standards so that we are a living witness to others. Notes from previous sessions are available from the Bible Study Section of www.ashingdonelim.co.uk.
Session 1
11 January 2011
Faithful to His promises Russell Herman was an American man who left trillions of dollars to thousands of people he’d never met. But, there was a slight problem. Russell Herman didn’t have trillions of dollars. He was just a very poor carpenter. The Last Will and Testament that he left behind, promised the “beneficiaries” many things, but they were promises that could never be fulfilled. Russell had great intentions, but he lacked the resources needed to make them a reality. Thankfully God is different. God has made great and precious promises, He has the ability to follow through on every single one of them.
How do we know that God will keep His promises? The Bible declares that God is faithful and it reveals the history of His faithfulness. There are also countless stories of the faithfulness of God to His people every day. Our focus in this group of studies is: n to remind us of the fact that God is faithful to his promises; n explore some of the promises that God has made to us His people; and n help us to see how we can apply God’s promises to our daily living.
How many promises do you think are in the Bible? (100? 1000? 10,000?) The preacher and evangelist, Dr. Reginald Dunlap, spent months analysing the bible and he calculated that there are approximately 30,000 promises in the Bible! We will not be looking at all of them! Peter wrote about the promises of God: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2 Peter 1:3-4) Peter calls these “PRECIOUS” promises and it seemed that he liked that word. He used it at least 5 times in his two books: Precious Faith (1 Peter 1:7, 2 Peter 1:1), Precious blood (1 Peter 1:19), Precious stone (1 Peter 2:4-6), Precious Lord (1 Peter 2:7) and Precious promises (2 Peter 1:4). Here’s a wonderful thought and reality: Peter declares that claiming these precious promises makes us “partakers” with Christ. A “partaker” is a participant, partner, or sharer. We claim these precious promises as our own when we become a Christian. This then allows us to share in the “Divine nature” When we partner with Christ we can become like Him. But this new nature is not automatic. We must flee, “escape” the corruption that is in the world by evil desires. That’s why Peter goes on to describe the great effort we must put in to add to our faith all kinds of godly characteristics.
What is it that makes God’s promises so great and precious? 1
