Mid Canterbury’s top tennis coach believes it was a miracle he and his family walked away relatively unscathed from a crash on the Rakaia River bridge on Saturday. Mid Canterbury tennis coach Andre van Rooyen and his family were returning from Christchurch when their vehicle was struck from behind, causing them to crash into the side of the bridge before being spun 180 degrees to face back towards Christchurch. “We were approaching the bridge and the traffic in front was going really slowly so I told my wife Debbie to slow down,” he said. “She looked in the rear view mirror and said this guy behind us is going to

smack us, so I looked around and he was not slowing down. It all happened quite fast but time did seem to slow down. “He hit us on the right rear side so that spun us into the side of the bridge and facing back towards Christchurch. I have no idea how we didn’t hit the car in front and I think if we did things would have been a lot worse.” Despite everybody in the car suffering whiplash and his son breaking his foot in two places, van Rooyen said he is incredibly grateful that things did not end up worse, especially through the quick

reactions of other people at the scene. “We were very lucky there were two nurses that were there to help out and there was also an off-duty police officer,” he said. “My wife froze up in the driver’s seat after the crash and the nurse sat in the passenger seat with her and took her through some breathing exercises to calm her down.”
