On a road safety mission

Increase in severe decay From P1 At present his practice is down two dentists, but is in the process of hiring and has a cohort of dental students arriving in three weeks which will also help to relieve pressure. “It’s busy, but we are always busy.” Currently his waiting list for people needing routine care is around four weeks with acute care patients taking priority. “For emergencies we see people as soon as we can and it is often on the day,” Dr Wall said. This has resulted in dentists clocking up overtime, but that was the reality of the profession. To combat decay Dr Wall suggested following standard dietary advice and using a high-fluoride containing toothpaste.

Cyclists Paul Gourlie and Hidenori Koike are on a mission to improve road safety. The pair pulled into Ashburton yesterday afternoon, on their 40-day mission to cycle the length of the country on State Highway 1 observing driver behaviour en route. They set out from Bluff on January 29 and have both enjoyed the journey so far. Mr Gourlie, who chairs the Dunedin Multi-Ethnic Council, said the ultimate aim of the journey is to put together a document focused on making the roads safer for all users. “Visitors and people new to the country are often blamed for accidents, we can continue to blame them or we can do something – like creating multilingual information to help keep everyone safer,” he said.

There are also two teachers, English and science, who have returned on fixed term positions until their vacancies have been filled. Principal Grant McMillan said the numbers are slightly lower than the past two or three years

because there were a number of long-serving staff members who retired in those years. He expected the numbers to stay the same for the next few years. Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said they have a new PE teacher, a new technology

teacher, a new economics and business studies teacher and a new maths teacher. However, the maths teacher is not starting until Easter so a teacher has come out of retirement to temporarily cover them. The turnover was about the same as usual, he said.

An evening with Kelvin Cruickshank

HMS Pinafore

With the outstanding success and popularity of the award winning series “Sensing Murder”, Kelvin has been literally swamped with people wanting to see him. For this reason, he is continuing his series of exclusive evenings that will help to reach out and touch more people at once. These evenings will simply be Kelvin working with spirit. Kelvin will read as many people permitted by spirit per session, although we do not guarantee that he can read everyone.

Set aboard the ship HMS PINAFORE, the captain’s daughter, Josephine, is in love with a lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw, despite her father wanting her to marry Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. She abides by her father’s wishes at first, but Sir Joseph’s advocacy of the equality of humankind encourages Ralph and Josephine to overturn conventional social order. They declare their love for each other and eventually plan to elope. The captain discovers this plan, but, as in many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, a surprise disclosure changes things dramatically near the end of the story.
