Ashburton dentists are seeing a significant increase in severe decay, with some patients having to wait up to four weeks for treatment. Dr Justin Wall of the Ashburton Dental Centre said he was seeing a large number of patients with severe decay and things were only getting worse. A major player in the increase in decay was a lack of fluoridation in the district’s water supply, he said. “There is no doubt about it, it has an impact and the impact is really starting to hit hard now.”

Fluoride was withdrawn from Ashburton’s water supply in March 2002, with attempts made to reintroduce it in 2006 and a referendum held in March 2007. Only 23 of New Zealand’s 67 councils add fluoride to its water supply. Because of the increase in decay, dentists were struggling to cope. His practice, Dentistry on Parkside, was expanding to encompass an extra surgery and had also taken a new dental hygienist on board. However, Dr Wall’s practice was busy due to a combination of an increase in demand and a shortage of dentists. Dr Wall employs dentists on a transitional basis, expecting them to not settle in the district.
